GREEN ARROW #43 Review: Citizen’s Arrest

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Julia and Shawna Benson kick off their Green Arrow run by introducing a new vigilante to Emerald City; however, a little birdie told me this new “citizen” tends to take things a bit too far. You’ll never guess which billionaire is next on his hit list. Let’s strap in and find out!

GREEN ARROW #38 SPOILERS TOO!

Summary

The Benson’s open this issue by introducing Jabal Slade, who is blowing up buildings to put up new homes. Lucky for the tenants, Green Arrow and Arsenal are there to save them right before it blows!

Next, readers find out that Oliver’s going bankrupt and getting sued by thousands because his Qphones and Qpads all blew up during GREEN ARROW ANNUAL #2. And, just as things are looking up for Green Arrow, a new villain/ vigilante emerges on the scene.

The Citizen arrives to fix this city using Social Media Social Justice. He captures Jabal Slade and posts a Live video online to have the web vote to see if he lives or dies. It turns out, the city votes for him to die and they kill him.  The issue ends with Citizen announcing his next target; Oliver Queen.

Been There Done That

This feels like it’s been done before. The premise of a villain/ vigilante using the internet to have everyone vote to see who lives and who dies has been something tossed around in the media, films, and TV since at least 2008 with the movie UNTRACEABLE. Granted, that movie was just a straight up killer trying to show how sick and twisted society is where the Benson’s took it one step further and made it a “call to action.”

The idea of looking at humanity under a microscope to see their true colors was even done in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES when Joker made the two ferry boats decide who would live and who would die. Point is: I’m disappointed that Benson’s first shot at Green Arrow turned into plots of movies and possibly TV shows that have been done before. They had an opportunity, like most new creative teams on books, to move in any direction they wanted with new ideas and new directions for the characters. This issue felt more of the same Social Justice angle with plots of movies readers have seen before sprinkled in.

Highlights

I enjoyed the Benson’s continuing the Oliver Queen chili snob connection. It’s a small, silly thing that’s fun and lite-hearted but I love it! However, I’m getting a bit tired of Sanctuary being name-dropped in random issues throughout the DCU. I feel DC is trying hard to push the idea that Sanctuary has always been there by sprinkling it in random issues across their line. It’s kind of like a gradual retcon, and it’s exhausting.

I also loved that Roy is the person Oliver chooses to trust with the box that Martian Manhunter gave him in case he dies. This was where I wanted the Benson’s to take the story. Readers will want to know what’s in that dang box and how it can be used to stop the Justice League. If you have been reading JUSTICE LEAGUE currently, we have seen how easy it is for our heroes to lose control, be taken advantage of, or just manipulated by outside forces. Point is: the Benson’s could explore this angle while fighting villains along the way. I would be all in on that story arc!

The Art

Javi Fernandez does a fantastic job showing facial emotions and expressions in his art. However, his style throughout the issue isn’t as detailed and realistic as I would like. I enjoy more texture and weight to my art, and that isn’t Fernandez’ style. Don’t get me wrong; nothing that Fernandez drew looks bad at all. Readers can tell exactly what they are looking at with little confusion. His layout of panels and flow through the issue makes it easy to follow, but the pages just aren’t very dynamic. Fernandez’ art doesn’t draw me into the story, but it also isn’t taking anything away from it either.

Should you buy this issue?

I’m on the fence with that answer. The premise feels like it’s been done before and the art is just fine but nothing that leaps off the page to grab my attention. So, currently, I would have to say no. My hope is that the story picks up and becomes more interesting, especially if the focus switches to the box!

Should you add this to your pull list?

Here is where I say yes. Each creative team deserves an arc to show what they can do and where they’re going. I will be reading the first Benson arc to give it a more accurate review of what they have in store for readers, and I feel everyone should do the same. A one issue snapshot for a writer and art team is not fair to give a stamp of approval or disapproval. So for now, I’m still in for the first arc.

Review: MISTER MIRACLE #10 – Scott’s Beard Gets Bigger

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Mister Miracle #10 is out today from DC Comics, and it’s another harrowing and surreal snapshot of depression.

After the events of last issue, Mister Miracle is left with an impossible choice to make. Scott can end the war with Apokolips, saving billions of lives, but only by giving up what little happiness he has left.

We’ve been following Scott’s depression for ten issues now, and it’s gone through cycles. We’ve seen the good, we’ve seen the bad, and this issue is definitely more of the ugly. Tom King and Mitch Gerads use Scott and Big Barda to show how our anxiety and depression affects those closest to us, and how it just wants to take whatever little joy we can muster.

mister miracle 10

We’ve seen this story unfold from Scott’s perspective, but Barda has also had to deal with all the pain and trouble. Moreover, she’s had to be the strong one, the rock. Finally, she gets some much deserved catharsis in this issue, and it ranges from scary to sad. For the first time really, we see her pain. But we also see, like we’ve seen in previous issues, that she loves Scott despite his problems, and scream as she might, she’ll always be there to help him when he needs it.

It’s beautiful in the saddest way. Welcome to Mister Miracle.

Barda’s the dominating force in this issue, and Gerads doesn’t let you forget it. She commands whatever panel she’s in; Scott looks tiny next to her. It’s a brilliant parallel for their relationship. She’s the strong one holding everything together, and Scott just feels small and powerless.

Think about their relationship. They were both raised in hellfire, literally, but it affected them both very differently. They’re both fucked up, but one seems stronger for it, able to harness it and channel it into something positive while the other dwells on it in a negative sense. Again it’s a sharp commentary on the real world. We all live in the same, messed up world, but some of us deal with it better than others.

When reading issue ten, observe the way Gerads frames Barda and the way she stacks up to Scott. Most of this commentary comes through the art. Mister Miracle rewards you for paying attention and truly studying its craft more than any other book on the shelves.

Aside from how Scott’s metal health affects Barda, Mister Miracle #10 is about how depression tries to steal one’s happiness, and how one deals with that. It’s about bargaining and trying to make sense of nonsensical situations, ones that really shouldn’t require much thought at all. Scott considers making a terrible personal sacrifice for the greater good. It’s insane when you actually think about it, but to Scott it sort of makes sense. King and Gerads unpack this struggle in simple but powerful ways and show how our personal demons mess with our thought process.

Also, it’s great to see Scott’s superhero bros pop up for a cameo. The nods to Justice League International solidify this issue as a high point for the run. (Take note of Scott’s credit card and his bank. Again, pay attention, get rewarded.)

Only two issues left of Mister Miracle; what more can King and Gerads throw at us? Darkseid is.

JUSTICE LEAGUE #5 Review: Legion of Doom

Monkeys Fighting Robots

With issue five, writer James Tynion‘s takes a turn on JUSTICE LEAGUE or should I say the Legion of Doom!

Tynion gives readers an interesting taste of what’s been going on from the viewpoint of Lex Luthor and his crew; but what made Luthor turn away from good and will readers ever find out why? Let’s take a look!

JUSTICE LEAGUE #5 SPOILERS TOO!

Summary

Lex Luthor unlocked the key to the known universe after the events of JUSTICE LEAGUE: NO JUSTICE as well as had a revelation of true Entropy. So, Luthor began to form the Legion of Doom by recruiting Sinestro and Gorilla Grodd into the fold.

To succeed in his plan, Luthor needed a military leader to run an army, as well as someone who had controlled a “Force” in the past. Therefore, Sinestro and Grodd are the perfect couple for Lex’s new vision of Doom. Using Lexcorp tech, a mother box, and sheer intelligence, Lex went a million years into the future to see if Entropy indeed was the key to everything. But interestingly enough, Lex wasn’t the first Luthor who went searching for this idea; his father was.

If you remember back in JUSTICE LEAGUE #1, Lex blew up an old Legionnaires Club and found a secret door of his fathers. Lionel already had this revelation and was looking into the very same thing: the Path of Doom. So after Lex’s epiphany, his mother box technology, Lionel’s research, and pure genius, Luthor sought to change the future by bringing Entropy and Doom to the present instead of millions of years in the future.

The Goods

Let’s start with Tynion’s explanations of just about EVERYTHING! Readers get answers to motivations of the characters, as well as answers to why the Hall of Doom is such a good stronghold. From the Skartaris metal, to Felix Faust’s incantations, to Joker torturing himself to make a better interrogation chamber, these are the details readers have needed throughout this series, and even the DCU in general.

Sometimes, writers gloss over the details to get through a story quick and clean. But,  Tynion managed to weave answers together so beautifully while still progressing the story forward with little dialogue, creative storytelling, and exciting plot twists.  And,  Tynion‘s take on Lex was genuinely fantastic.  Luthor’s genius and calm, calculated ego are finally back. He’s arrogant and cunning again, and I love it. Don’t get me wrong; I liked good Luthor, but I forgot how much I missed evil Lex. But Tynion not only gives readers the Lex back, but he also gives Luthor the gravitas he’s lost since the New 52.

Tynion does the little things throughout the issue that are so important to this series and the storyline. For example, he gives simple,  nonchalant explanations as to why Grodd can’t use mind control on Luthor because he uses blockers and inhibitors. Or, Tynion sneaks into a conversation about how Lex can manipulate time and space to appear by the Source Wall instantly. These are the little throwaway lines to some writers that mean the world to the dedicated fans. Thank you so much Tynion for not overlooking the small things. Thank you for not assuming readers know what’s happening.

The Art

Doug Mahnke and Jaime Mendoza’s art is stunning. It’s detailed and so visually appealing that readers will get immediately sucked into the story. Mahnke and Mendoza’s artwork is the cherry on top of this issue that took Tynion‘s fantastic story and made this issue almost flawless. The panel layout was easy to follow, and nothing seemed too crammed in on each page. Wil Quintana’s colors were bright and vibrant and helped throw readers deeper into the story, especially Luthor’s bright green eyes. I can’t say enough about how awesome this art team did on his issue. Amazing job guys!

Should you buy this issue?

Absolutely! JUSTICE LEAGUE has already been ten times better since Scott Snyder began. However, Tynion‘s issue is by far the best one yet. He has a knack for writing villains, especially Luthor and Grodd. This issue can stand alone and make sense by itself. So, if readers haven’t been following along, you’ll still get enjoyment out of it. However, if you’ve been reading since issue 1, Tynion issue puts some of the pieces together that make this issue so dang good.

Should you add this to your pull list?

My understanding is that Tynion is not on every issue but every 5th issue. He will be telling the story from the perspective of the Legion of Doom. So, if you liked this issue, you may have to wait until issue 10 to get more of this. However, Snyder has been doing well, and I still recommend putting this on your pull list. That said; if you like what Tynion did here, you should consider adding JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK to your pull list.

Review: Jon and Damien Ride Again in ADVENTURES OF THE SUPER SONS #1

Monkeys Fighting Robots
The Super Sons return with a bright, fun opening to their new maxi-series.

When Rebirth was first announced, one of the new comics announced was Super Sons. The series followed Damian Wayne and Jon Kent as they went on super adventures. While their series wasn’t a very long one, it is a highlight of this era. The Super Sons’ series reminded us that comics could be fun but have enough emotion driven moments to be taken seriously. The series’ ended in May of this year, but Tomasi has more story to tell. We now have a 12 issue maxi-series that will take the sons of Batman and Superman on a new adventure. What trouble will our Super Sons get into?

Adventure of the super sons #1 cover

**Some Spoilers Below**

Story:

The Super Sons return with a bang as they fight a golden statue of Superman before their last day of school. They plan to go on several adventures over the course of the summer, as Jon is staying with Damian. Before they can truly enjoy the summer, however, a new group of villains appears to face them. Lead by Rex Luthor, the group known as The Gang wants to end the Super Sons once and for all. To defeat Superboy, they reveal their secret weapon: Gold Kryptonite.

Adventures of the Super Sons #1 p1

This was a fun opening issue for the series but had a major flaw holding it back from perfection. The relationship between Superboy and Robin continues to be my favorite part of the series. The fun-loving Jon and ever-serious Damien have such humorous and fun banter; it’s near impossible not to smile. The same goes for everything in this book. The dialogue, the action, the art. All of it gives off the fun vibe that readers of all ages can enjoy.

There is one major flaw with this first issue, despite the fun. The issue felt like a very quick read in terms of storytelling. The action is a ton of fun, but some parts are just skimmed over without explanation. Where are Superman and Lois? Who are these villains? How did they get Gold Kryptonite? This is the first issue, so I don’t expect answers right away, but you can’t just pull out the rarest form of Kryptonite without any explanation.

Adventures of the Super Sons #1 p2

Art:

As I mentioned before, the art for this issue is just as fun as the story. Carlo Barberi returns as the illustrator, and I can’t imagine anyone else on the job. I especially enjoy his designs for The Gang, mixing threatening but silly in one perfect, cartoony style. The vibrant colors helped these illustrations pop off the page and made the world feel alive.

Conclusion:

While it’s a little rough around the edges, this opening to this new Super Sons maxi-series is good. It’s a ton of fun to read, from the dialogue to the action against the villains. The art matches the tone with fantastic illustration and color, promising a bright series ahead. This is a great first issue, and I recommend it.

THE EXPANSE Season 3 Finale: Reviewing “Congregation” & “Abaddon’s Gate”

Monkeys Fighting Robots

People on all sides are in pretty bad shape after the events of “Fallen World.” The massive deceleration caused by whatever power controls the Ring left several injured. Although many of the injuries are trivial, a lack of gravity interferes with people’s abilities to heal, and some who would be on the mend are given grave prognoses.

Specifically, Drummer, whose injury would be life threatening even with full gravity, is in bad shape after some heavy equipment crushed her legs and spine. Ashford, as executive officer, assumes control of the Behemoth and orders that they spin up their artificial gravity machine. It works like a charm, and Ashford offers aid to any who need it, Belter or otherwise.

The Expanse Season 3 Finale: Congregation – Crazy Jim

Ranting about the end of everything and that he’s been talking to a dead detective, the Martians, including Bobbie Draper, think Holden must be crazy. Unsure of what to do with him, they decide to take Holden to the Behemoth. Locked in a cell across from Clarissa Mao’s, Clarissa gets a chance to find out just how much the ordeal with the Ring is affecting Holden, and we see a glimmer of sympathy dawn in her eyes. Holden tries desperately to make contact with Miller, but to no avail.

Holden gets his crazy-sounding story about the end of all life as we know it through to Ashford, but he’s not convinced that Holden is sane. Ashford ignores the weary traveler and starts making plans of his own.

The Expanse Season 3 Finale: Congregation – “We can rebuild her: we have the technology.”

Drummer is down but not out. Her physician tells her that she needs to take it easy for a while. After all, regrowing spinal tissue is tough work. Drummer disagrees though. She starts building artificial legs out of some spare parts lying around. The prosthesis building isn’t going so well until Naomi Nagata shows up. The two have a less-than-cuddly reunion, but Nagata offers help to her one-time captain. With Naomi’s superior technical knowledge, the two get Drummer’s robotic legs in working order and set to finding Holden.

The Expanse Season 3 Finale: Congregation – “Holden, you’re talking to yourself.”

Finding Holden in his cell, Naomi and Holden finally get a chance to see each other, but there isn’t time for canoodling. Drummer and Naomi both want to know what to do next, and Holden works even harder on getting a hold of Miller.

The Expanse Season 3 Finale: Congregation – “Gotta’ nuke something.”

Proving that nuking things is still in vogue in the future, Dr. Kolvoord, aboard the UNN Thomas Prince manages to make contact with Ashford aboard the Behemoth. Kolvoord describes a plan: detonate a remote-controlled skiff armed with a nuclear warhead to disrupt the field holding the ships in place.

Kolvoord, with the Behemoth’s assistance, manages to detonate the skiff, but the field holding them in place remains. The detonation does provide the Thomas Prince with some interesting data, though, that shows that all of humanity is in danger from the Ring.

Ashford and Kolvoord start working on a backup plan. They determine that, by focusing their communication laser on a specific spot on the Ring, they may be able to destroy the ring. Unfortunately, this will also kill everyone inside the Ring. Crap.

The Expanse Season 3 Finale: Abaddon’s Gate – “Shut it down!”

Finally able to make contact with Miller, Holden learns that the Ring interpreted the nuclear explosion as a hostile move from the humans…duh. In retaliation, the source powering the ring has started charging up for a massive burst of energy. Holden tells Miller that the exploding skiff wasn’t meant as a hostile move, but Miller and his alien masters aren’t convinced. The intelligence behind the Ring demands a show of good faith, and Holden tells Naomi and Drummer that all ships must power down their reactors.

The Expanse Season 3 Finale: Abaddon’s Gate – “Luckily, we have a speechwriter/pastor and broadcasting equipment aboard!”

Naomi, Holden, and Drummer work on taking the Behemoth’s reactor so they can shut it down, but Diogo has other ideas. Wearing Martian battle armour, Diogo goes after his former captain.

Amos and Alex manage to convince Anna and Monica to broadcast their message that all ships must shut down their reactors or be annihilated by the Ring. Bobbie’s squad is called upon to stop the transmission, but, showing her true loyalties, Bobbie kills her own men to stop them from killing Amos and Alex.

Anna’s message gets out: she pleads with the ships involved to power down their reactors in a show of good faith to the Ring and the system that controls it.

The Expanse Season 3 Finale: Abaddon’s Gate – Shafted!

In his Martian armour, Diogo is able to catch up to Drummer, Naomi, and Holden relatively quickly. Unfortunately for him, he didn’t count on Naomi dropping an elevator on him. Crushed to death at the bottom of an elevator shaft, it seems that this on-again-off-again character will now be permanently off. Ashford orders Naomi and Holden killed, but Clarissa, showing that even a Mao can change her spots, decides she’s had enough of crazy jerks bossing her around. She takes matters into her own hands.

The Expanse Season 3 Finale: Abaddon’s Gate – “Serial murderer on the bridge!”

Even though the other ships have all powered down, Ashford is still bent on killing everyone. He refuses to shut down the Behemoth’s reactor. Having been freed from her cell to help repair the Behemoth’s communication laser, which Ashford plans on using to destroy the Ring, and with the neural blocker that stopped her from using her space-uppers removed, Clarissa takes matters into her own hands. She manages to shut the Behemoth’s reactor down in the nick of time, frees Holden and Naomi, and smashes Ashford’s face into his control panel. Unfortunately, no good super-deed goes unpunished. She takes a bullet, and it seems that this is the end of Clarissa Mao’s ride.

The Expanse Season 3 Finale: Abaddon’s Gate – The Final Final Frontier

With the Behemoth’s reactor finally deactivated, the Ring powers down and the field immobilizing the ships dissipates. Earther, Martian, and Belter alike all leave the Ring but as they do, they see that the Ring has opened portals to 1,300 different habitable solar systems.

Draper takes up a post on the Rocinante as a pilot, and the tough little ship makes its way out of the Ring. As it leaves, though, Holden has another vision. We see him standing on some alien beach. He appears to be naked, or at least shirtless, for some reason. Holden wonders how the race who created the Rings was destroyed, and Miller appears next to him saying that’s what he’d like to know. The two look up at the sky where they see the activated Rings providing access to new solar systems, and the vision ends.

Just before the Roci clears the Ring and the credits roll, though, Holden sees an energy fluctuation that seems to enter his body. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until season 4 to find out whether the fluctuation is a representation of Miller, the Investigator, or something else entirely.

The Expanse Season 3 Finale: Abaddon’s Gate – Final Thoughts

This two-part season finale was intriguing, but execution needed some work. Throughout these two episodes, I kept thinking about how convenient all the plot points are. Clarissa’s well-timed conversion, Anna and Monica’s team effort to convince the ships to power down, these and other items gave these two episodes a too-convenient feel.

Of course, it’s difficult to find the correct balance between fatalism and random occurrence within the world of a television show, but The Expanse has spent three years walking this fine line, and I’ve rarely felt that the writers missed their target. Season finales tend to suffer from this kind of problem since writers get more concerned with wrapping up loose ends than wrapping them up well.

I look forward to the next season, which will apparently begin streaming on Amazon Prime Video at some point in the future. With the Rings now open, it almost seems like The Expanse is just getting started.

Interview: Ben Percy On NIGHTWING #47 And Where The Title Is Going Next

Monkeys Fighting Robots

This week sees the release of Nightwing #47, a pivotal issue which wraps up the current storyline while setting many things in place for the future of both Nightwing and his city of Bludhaven. Ben Percy, the writer who has been putting Dick Grayson through all these motions, was awesome enough to take a moment with us at Monkeys Fighting Robots and talk all things Nightwing!

Nightwing
Image courtesy of DC Comics / Black Nerd Problems

Ben first of all thanks for taking the time to talk to us here at Monkeys Fighting Robots.
Ben Percy: Thanks for helping make some noise about Nightwing.

Ben, this issue sees the ending of a pretty important arc to the title with. Without spoiling too much, how is the city of Bludhaven at the end of ‘The Bleeding Edge’ compared to the beginning?
BP: Bludhaven has gone from an impoverished, crime-riddled community with no real economic potential beyond its casinos…to a smart city. But a Faustian bargain comes with the tech investment. This company—Mirage—might be installing a hyperloop and installing 3D-printed buildings and delivering to every doorstop smart devices that are like VR-enhanced versions of Alexa…but this comes with a price. The price of surveillance. There are those involved with the development who have good intentions, but there are also those who wish to steal vulnerable data and use it to their advantage. The ending also teases that there is much more to come for both Bludhaven and Gotham. What can we expect to happen to two of the DCU’s most dangerous cities? Think of this as a prelude to a much larger story. Bludhaven is a beta experiment, one part of a much larger and more sophisticated plan involving the Dark Web.

Why did you choose to humanize Cloke by revealing such a tragic event for his ‘origin’?
BP: Over the past few issues I intentionally made people believe that Cloke was the bad guy. But he’s not. That was a fake out. He’s a tool of Wyrm—and thus a victim. He’s done terrible things, but we can empathize with his want for revenge. He gives you a taste of what’s to come. Wyrm knew Willem’s history—and was able to use that history to manipulate him. Advertisers do this every day as a result of your browsing habits. Blackmailers do this every day when they hack into photo stashes and hard drives. Who in the political, military, corporate or superhero world could be similarly compromised?

What about Dick Grayson/Nightwing. How have these events affected him and his relationship with his city?
BP: At the beginning of the arc, Grayson was exhausted by technology—the constant flash and buzz of social media and email and smartphone alerts—and so, of course, I hurled him into the center of a massive tech threat. He has teamed up with Batgirl—whose skill set is uniquely suited for this storyline—and has recognized that he must embrace and weaponize technology if he’s going to bring down these Dark Web architects.

And what set’s Dick/Nightwing apart from Bruce/Batman for you?
They’re both wounded men, but they’ve responded to their trauma differently. Dick’s defining feature is his optimism. Kicking ass is fun. Being a hero is a performance, an act of joy. You see his fist and then you see his smile behind it.

Have you always wanted to write Nightwing/Dick Grayson?
BP: Yes, but more generally, I’ve always wanted to be part of the Bat family. It’s where my dark sensibility belongs. I feel especially lucky to be working with such a great team. Carlos Mangual on letters, Nick Filardi on colors, the legendary Klaus Janson on inks. But I want to give a special shout-out to Chris Mooneyham. When I got the job, we talked about Batman: Year One and Daredevil: Born again as our ideal aesthetic for the series and he captures that perfectly. When I think about the Bat-books, I see grit and I see steam and I see broken glass and shadow-soaked alleys.

Barbara/Batgirl was a big part of this arc, especially this finale issue. What makes her such an important ally to Nightwing?
BP: I mentioned her skillset already—but beyond that, she and Dick make such a good pairing. I love the way they fit together emotionally, and I love the way they look together visually. Babs is going to be an essential part of my run on Nightwing.

Can you tease us as to who or what to expect next in Nightwing?
BP: It’s not that the Dark Web is going anywhere—that’s the central through-line of my run—but I think it’s important to give readers vacations. Constantly make things feel fresh. So the next two issues are an insane visual spectacle—about the greatest motorcycle race in the cosmos. This is very much a tribute to Grant Morrison, and you’ll see characters like Professor Pyg and Flamingo pop up. It’s…bananas. A fun- and adrenaline-fueled romp. After that, things are going to get scary. It will be October after all. I’m known for my horror novels. And we’re launching a Scarecrow storyline that will do a deep dive into fear and identity. And though I can’t say what exactly is going to happen to Nightwing…let’s just say issue 50 is going to be monumentally intense. It’s an anniversary issue, and we’re taking full advantage of it. Something big is coming. Something that is going to unsettle people greatly. Which is what a good horror story should do. After that journey, we’ll return to the central Dark Web story. Thanks to everyone for reading—I appreciate being trusted with the series and I promise to bring the epic.

Spoiler 13

FROM THE WEEK OF AUGUST 1, 2018

Infinity Wars #1

Doctor Strange forms the Infinity Watch to take down Thanos and protect the universe from any threats interested in gathering all the stones. Meanwhile, Loki’s quest to find out who made him forget and alter his past had him bump into an alternate universes Loki Odinson who wields all Infinity stones and Mjolnir. Then, readers jump back to find out that the killer of Thanos was non-other than Gamora who stole the Power Stone and decapitated her dear old dad. There is no way this could get more nuts, right? Well, the issue ends with Gamora impaling Peter Quill!

Captain America #2

No one trusts Cap. It’s like everyone thinks he tried to take over the world or something… (sarcasm) Anyway, Steve is on a crusade to make a difference the American way, even though America wants nothing to do with him. But as the issue ends, readers see that Cap is heading to Wakanda and making deals with the Cosmic Cube on the side (I think).

Cosmic Ghost Rider #2

After a long talk with Galactus and Uatu the Watcher, Frank decides not to kill baby Thanos and raise him as his son. Yup! You read that right. Well, just as the issue ends, the new Guardians of the Galaxy featuring a duck Juggernaut, Jubilee, Cable, and some version of Rocket Raccoon come to put the kibosh on the Cosmic Ghost Rider’s fatherly plans.

Death of Inhumans #2

Black Bolt goes ape-poop crazy and annihilates the Kree at Hala. He screams the names of all that died at the hands of Vox in Arctilan. And yes, that means Lockjaw is dead too. Please take a moment of silence for the most fantastic pooch in the world.

At the end of the issue, that slippery devil Vox manages to pull a fast one on Black Bolt and slices his throat. We’ll have to wait until next issue to see if he lives.

Immortal Hulk #4

Walter Langkowski A.K.A. Sasquatch and Jacqueline McGee (a news reporter) go investigate another Hulk sighting at a bar in South Dakota. Somehow, Langkowski gets stabbed in the back and sent to the hospital in critical condition. While McGee waits for news on Walter, Banner shows up in disguise telling her to evacuate the building. Why? Well, as the sun goes down, readers see Langkowski change into a raging Sasquatch on the operating table. We are going to have a good old fashion South Dakota Hospital fight next issue!

Star Wars #52

While dodging Vader, Han shoots Threepio into Luke’s Star Ship to deliver a message to the Rebellion. Threepio tells them that the airlocks have a failsafe to open if something flies directly at them automatically. So, Luke tests the theory, opens the doors, and names his fighter team Rogue Squadron after Jyn Erso and their mission. Luke was always the more sensitive and emotional twin.
