The BOJACK HORSEMAN Season Five Trailer is Here

Monkeys Fighting Robots

BoJack Horseman will soon return to Netflix in all his self-destructive glory, according to the official Twitter account @BoJackHorseman.

Season five of the nuanced animated comedy will debut on Netflix September 14th.  Bojack Horseman tells the story of an emotionally troubled actor as he deals with fame, substance abuse, a longing to connect with the people around him, and a paradoxical tendency to drive them away.  It takes place in a version of our world populated by both humans and animal people.

BoJack Horseman Diane Nguyen

Through four seasons, the show has used animation and anthropomorphic characters to tell stories that are emotionally rich while still being uproariously (and at times absurdly) funny.  It satirizes and revels in the insanity of celebrity culture, politics, and privilege.  From the looks of the trailer, season five will continue that tradition.

BoJack Horseman stars Will Arnett, Amy Sedaris, Alison Brie, Paul F. Tompkins, and Aaron Paul.  The trailer features BoJack’s latest gig on the fictional show Philbert, which was introduced (along with its creator Flip McVicker – played by Mr. Robot star Rami Malek) last season.  It was created by Raphael Bob-Waksberg.

Will BoJack find peace at last?  Will his pride cost him his relationship with Hollyhock?  Which guest star are you most exciting to hear from?  Let us know in the comments.

Review: GUNDAM BUILD DIVERS: Episode 22

Monkeys Fighting Robots

As Gundam Build Divers starts to move towards the final battle, the stakes keep getting higher. Does the the series score go up as well with this episode?

Summary

With time running out, the Build Divers must find a way to save Sarah or risk losing her forever.

SPOILER WARNING

Review

With Sarah’s life on the chopping block, the team has to pull out all the stops to make sure she doesn’t get deleted when the next patch comes out for the system. A point which is made multiple times over the episode. It is important to remind everyone of the stakes and consequences but the episode took too much time to establish the idea the Build Divers are outnumbered and going to have engaged in a near impossible battle in the upcoming episodes. Really feels like this point could have been done with less dialogue and more giant robot combat.

Gundam Build Divers

A thought came to mind while watching this episode. Koichi is working with Tsukasa, the person wanted to destroy GBN to save Sarah. Though Tsukasa seems to have redeemed himself a little bit there is a good chance there will be a betrayal. The episode explains if the operation to save Sarah doesn’t go properly it will result in feedback and it could destroy the entire network. This is basically what Tsukasa wanted to begin with. The plot of the first half of the series was him trying to take down the network. At least it seems like he should at least TRY to double cross everyone.

Only three episodes left in the series but things are still looking very promising. Though the series will not be as good as Gundam Build Fighters, if the finale plays out just right, it will be enough to be a better experience than Gundam Build Divers Try.

OVA Diamonds: AI NO KUSABI (1990s)

Monkeys Fighting Robots

When I started reviewing old OVAs, I didn’t expect “OVA Diamonds” to be a regular column, this all started on a whim. As a result, I’ve been reviewing OVAs out of my comfort zone. It’s easy to talk about Devilman, it’s hard to talk about Phoenix (Madhouse), it’s a true challenge to talk about a Yaoi classic: Ai no Kusabi, in particular, the 1990s OVAs.

First, a caveat: if there is anything I write in this review others would consider offensive, I  am sorry. None of the erotic scenes did anything for me and even if they did, this is smut with a plot. This means the plot should take focus over the smut. I don’t know how to react to this. On one hand I love a solid story. On the other hand this is porn, a genre not known for its strong plotting. So it’s “Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.”

Curveball joke in Ai no Kusabi (1990s)
She’s a very attractive man.

The setup: It’s the future, on a distant planet. There exist two types of people; the “Blondies”, the upper crust who dress like military officers from the Principality of Zeon, and the “Mongrels”, dark haired humans who live in slums, who look like Abercrombie & Fitch models, and dress like them too. One day, a thief named Riki is attacked by a gang, until he’s rescued by a blondie named Iason Mink (member of the Seme Hall of Fame, and illegitimate offspring of Char Aznable from Char’s Counterattack and Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII). Instead of being grateful for someone of the upper crust saving his life, he gets upset over this. Thus, starts a story of doomed love, a gay love square (a love triangle with four people instead of three), and commentary of class structure, social problems, and power in a relationship set against a dystopian future. It’s a classic “He said, he said” story.

Sarcasm aside, there’s a lot I do like about Ai no Kusabi. I love the world the series creates. It’s distinctive and for sci-fi, if you can create a unique world, you’re already halfway there to being great. I love Iason Mink and his black-market contact: Katze (His first name is not Berg and no I’m not making a Gatchaman Crowds joke). All the characters are distinctly well rounded, specifically our four leads. Mink, in particular strikes me as someone, endlessly fascinating. A humanoid robot who could organize the universe, is widely regarded as the best at what he does, and universally respected by all the blondies and their ruler a computer called Jupiter. However, he’s in love with someone of a lower class. So, the OVA checks off a decent number of positives on my personal checklist, so why I am not ecstatically praising this to high heavens?

The world in Ai no Kusabi (1990s)
I swear I’ve seen this before, but I don’t know where.

Well, as Phil Collins once sang: “Something Happened on the Way to Heaven.” In this case, those somethings turned out to be: a limited amount of exposition on who the blondies were, and where they came from. The fact I had to look up the plot point all the blondies were robots, is something which should be explained in the first five minutes, either in a text crawl or a canned narration. Other parts I feel needed exposition are not explained. How did this society come to the idea of “Pets” and “Furniture” (i.e. sex trafficking of Mongrels by blondies and people used as furniture)? Why do the pets only serve the blondies until they turn 20? Finally, one of the most important questions: Why does Iason have a sex drive? He’s a robot (fine, artificial human), but why does he need this? Didn’t we learn anything from Blade Runner about giving robots emotions. Really?

I should also mention those themes I talked about, specifically the power in the relationship theme. This OVA eschews the traditional Seme/Uke characterization, with both leads being Semes. Iason clearly has a strong personality, as does Riki (although his personality is more headstrong than anything else), however because of the class structure, Iason holds all the power, and Riki isn’t happy about this in the slightest.

Our two “lovebirds”, more like “hatebirds” than anything else.

I hate Riki as well. I mentioned the opening scene, where he’s ungrateful for being saved. This first impression left a bad taste in my mouth. This is a man who’s headstrong yet doesn’t realize in a world this dire and miserable, getting the breaks is the best possible situation he could hope for. So, this annoyed me to no end. There’s a scene where Riki is talking to Katze, and Katze mentions how being in his situation (being a pet older than 20, in a relationship with someone who loves you [Iason], and has sex with you, in this time where nobody can have sex) he should be consider himself lucky. Riki gives it barely any thought.

Finally, there is Guy. Oh boy. Guy was Riki’s right hand man when Riki lead a gang called the Bison. It’s clear Guy is not in his right mind and he slowly becomes a yandere in the worst way. What do I mean the worst way? He turns into a male Yuno Gasai. What do I mean by this: He kidnaps Riki, cuts off Riki’s tracer (apparently the Pets have tracers, so their blondies can follow their location) and turns Riki into a eunuch. Horrified, yet? It gets worse.

Evangelion joke in Ai no Kusabi (1990s)
Somewhere out there, Gendo Ikari is getting ideas.

Katze (who was formerly “furniture” for Iason and became an Iason’s broker in the black market) finds out Riki is in another castle and the place Guy sent Iason to will blow up with Iason and Guy inside. Why, because if Guy can’t have Riki, no one will. Cliché? You better believe it.

There’s a scene where Guy is asking Riki what he sees in Iason. Riki holds his ground and stands on Iason’s side. Then Guy says he refuses to accept the notion of Riki moved on to Iason. At this point, it would have been perfectly reasonable for Riki to punch Guy in the face or tell him screw off. He doesn’t and Guy castrates Riki. Why is Guy mad at Iason? From what I gathered, Guy assumes Iason was the one who sent The Bison gang to prison. Then again, Guy doesn’t have the moral high ground here. They were a gang, not exactly the Salvation Army we’re talking about. Iason’s hands in this aren’t clean either, pulling strings to get Riki out of prison, when a love affair between a blondie and a mongrel is forbidden. Yet, Iason has the appearance of a moral high ground (due to the class structure), so he at least has an edge over Guy. So Guy was probably right, yet Guy clearly doesn’t understand the word “optics”, it doesn’t matter if you’re right, if you don’t have the positive optics you might as well be in the wrong.

Hello, Operator? Send an army to find my lost boyfriend!

This leads to the ending where Katze finds Riki, and Iason goes up against Guy. I’ll say this, I got excited when Iason beat the crap out of Guy, although if I were Iason: I would have mortally wounded Guy. Katze and Riki catch up to Iason, and Riki throws a fit about Iason not hurting Guy.  Again, if I were Iason I would have yelled at Riki. Now was the time to complain? The building’s about to explode, and you’re complaining about a friend!

So, to barrel us through this ending, the building explodes, Riki and Guy get out, and Iason has his legs cut off by the explosion. In an effective bittersweet ending Katze gives Riki his last two specialty cigarettes to have one final smoke (because apparently lung cancer doesn’t exist in this universe), Riki goes back to Iason, to spend his last moments with a man who he thought he hated, yet he loved. We close out this roller coaster of emotions with Katze crying over Iason and Riki and Guy realizing Iason and Riki were meant for each other.

That moment when someone is blackmailing you, and you want no part of it.

I really wanted to like Ai no Kusabi and came out enjoying it for the most part. The OVA is not going out of here unscathed. I didn’t like Riki, Guy and his gang, yet the deep world building, and strong characterization makes the OVAs work overall. So as a critic, I recommend you track it down.

Mark Hamill Teases Clean-Shaven Look For STAR WARS EPISODE IX

Monkeys Fighting Robots

With most Americans celebrating Labor Day, Mark Hamill takes time to tease his beloved Star Wars fan base regarding his role in Episode IX. Instead of smoking ribs on the grill or enjoying a beverage, Hamill is working. He did, however, take time to honor Labor Day via Twitter. Celebrating past generations who’ve made Labor Day possible, Hamill educates Twitter followers while teasing a clean-shaven face.

Doing what he does best, Hamill jokes about not being in the States for Labor Day. Included in the tweet are standard Labor Day post pics, along with Mark looking healthy and relaxed.

Filming and production in England for Star Wars Episode IX is underway. And it appears Hamill’s joined the crew.

“I’ve always loved the irony of America celebrating Labor Day by NOT working,” a clean-shaven Hamill says. “Speaking of irony, I’m posting this a day early cuz at the moment I’m not in the good ol’ USA. And tomorrow (wait for it…) I HAVE TO GO TO WORK!”

Known for being loose-lipped about Star Wars secrets, Hamill is likely talking about filming for Episode IX. Leaked set photos show filming is taking place in mysterious jungle locations and England Airship sheds. Whether these locations are related to a Force ghost appearance from Hamill’s Luke Skywalker most likely won’t be confirmed.

Knowing the beard is no more, however, tips fandom off to a younger and healthier looking Skywalker in Episode IX, which is what most in the Star Wars fandom community want. Maybe, Disney does listen to its fans. With J.J. Abrams at the helm, it seems Episode IX is addressing fans concerns over the franchise.

Photos of the set locations recently surfaced, courtesy of MakingStarWars. Taken from Black Park near Pinewood Studios in England, it appears production is underway. Hamill confirming he’s leaving the States to “go to work,” leaves fans speculating if he’ll appear here as a Force ghost.

In a recent interview with USA Today, Oscar Issac describes what might be taking place in this forested area. “(They) are guerrilla fighters, adhering closer to something like the Revolutionary War fighters or even the guerrillas in Cuba with Che and Fidel and all these guys living in the mountains, coming down to do some attacks, and going back and trying to hide from the ’empire’ of the United States. It’s that kind of ragged at this point.”

What role do you think Mark Hamill will play within this forested area in Star Wars Episode IX? Or is he pulling fandoms chain for laughs, by sporting a clean-shaven face? Let us know in the comments and share how you spent your Labor Day.

ASGARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #1 Review: You Had Me At Throg

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Writer Cullen Bunn and artist Matteo Lolli put together an exciting adventure with Asgardians of the Galaxy #1, out this week.

Bunn writes about 90%* of the comics that come out each month, which means he’s a machine unlike no other (*I have no clue, but I know it’s a lot!). Historians are going to look back at this time in comic book history, and call it the Bunn Era.

That fact of the matter is, if you give this man (machine) a giant playground like the Asgardian mythos, he’s going to come up with some crazy shit. Which is precisely what Bunn does with the first issue of Asgardians of the Galaxy. He introduces all the characters, drops them in the middle of an insane battle, establishes the problem (Nebula), and then finishes off the issue with deceit and a plot twist.

This is a book that will tire you out because you get so excited about the different characters involved. After you read Bunn’s letter to fans at the end of the first issue, you will realize Bunn has a personal connection with every character he put in this book. Plus, the scale of the book is nothing less than epic. It is as if Bunn himself has two M16s and is defending the Gjallerbru bridge.

ASGARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #1 Review: You Had Me At Throg

The art of Lolli and the colors of Federico Blee are straight out the Marvel heyday of the late aughts. Asgardians of the Galaxy has very crisp art with vibrant colors. This style works exceptionally well in team books because Lolli and Blee can create epic action sequences that involve the whole team while highlighting individuals personalities. Asgardians of the Galaxy is a book you reread to appreciate all the detail involved in each panel.

The panel layout is adventurous as well. The panels are stacked, creating depth and a feeling of the action coming directly at you, which adds to the drama and the excitement. It almost acts like a volume control getting louder or softer depending on the scene.

ASGARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #1 Review: You Had Me At Throg

Cory Petit’s lettering had to move fast and furious while conveying emotion and weight. He handled the job exceptionally, as the book flowed well because of the layout of word balloons.

Overall, Asgardians of the Galaxy #1 creates a hype around the series that is unexplainable; it feels like I’m reading Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning’s Guardians of the Galaxy for the first time. If you are a fan of Walt Simonson’s Thor run or Abnett and Lanning, this is a must-read.

Everything We Know So Far About STAR WARS RESISTANCE

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Neatly tucked away in the fall lineup of 2018 lies Star Wars Resistance. Created and produced by Dave Filoni, the series is an animated show targeting a younger audience. Everything we know so far about Star Wars Resistance is it’s similar to Rebels. And yet, unique in its own way.

Filoni is best known for his work with on Star Wars: The Clone Wars, where he mentored under George Lucas. He now serves as the head of all Lucasfilm animation projects under Disney. Star Wars Resistance is Filoni’s creation, making him the mentor. Sitting at the directors’ helm is longtime Lucasfilm design and concept artist, Amy Beth Christenson. Having worked with Filoni on Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, Resistance will be her first directing gig. Star Wars Resistance airs on October 7 via the Disney Channel, and Disney XD.

Team Fireball And Cast

Taking place just months before the events of The Force Awakens, Star Wars Resistance contains a host of new characters and a few returning favorites. Oscar Isaac and will voice Poe Dameron and Gwendoline Christie, Captain Phasma. BB-8 will also be present, coupled with happy beeps.

Christopher Sean voices the lead role of Kaz, a clumsy newbie recruit in the resistance. Kaz works on the Colossus serving under Scott Lawrence’s character Yeager, a veteran pilot of the Rebellion and friend of Poe. In addition, Myrna Velasco (Tam) and Josh Brener (Neeku) fill out the Team Fireball roster.

Princess Leia will return to play a major role in the story, voiced by Rachel Butera. Even Kylo Ren will make a guest appearance. It’s still unknown whether Adam Driver will be voicing his character.

Colossus is a unique new addition to the Star Wars Canon. Functioning as a giant aircraft station, located in the Outer Rim of the galaxy. The planet’s name is still a mystery; however, we do know it’s a water based, and Colossus is in the middle of a sea.

Filoni and crew break down Colossus and Team Fireball with this new video, courtesy of Lucasfilm and Disney.

The First Order

Those who felt Captain Phasma received the shaft in The Last Jedi will be happy to know her character will get more screen time in Star Wars Resistance. A quick glimpse of a red stormtrooper is seen in the Team Fireball trailer, meaning Captain Cardinal could be making his animated debut.

First mentioned in the book Phasma, Captain Cardinal (Archex, or CD-0922) headed up the training of First Order stormtroopers. Cardinal’s character is unique to the Star Wars franchise because of his red stormtrooper armor.

A Funko Pop! titled the Red Classic Stormtrooper, released in 2017. Whether it’s connected to Captain Cardinal won’t be revealed until Star Wars Resistance airs.

Resistance Art Style And Direction

Star Wars Resistance Poster
Image via Disney Wiki – Fandom

Executive producer Athena Portillo states in the Team Fireball trailer, Star Wars Resistance is “unique in tone and look.” Much of this comes from the mind of Filoni and the art direction of Amy Beth Christenson.

“The idea for Star Wars Resistance came out of my interest in World War II aircraft and fighter pilots,” states Filoni on StarWars.com. “My grandfather was a pilot and my uncle flew and restored planes, so that’s been a big influence on me. There’s a long history of high-speed racing in Star Wars, and I think we’ve captured that sense of excitement in an anime-inspired style, which is something the entire team has been wanting to do for a long time.”

The high-speed racing Filoni refers to is most likely Han Solo’s racing circuit called the Five Sabers. Mentioned in the book Star Wars: Bloodline, Solo spent most of his time with his racing team. There’s even a clip in the trailer where a ship appears to have Solo’s team insignia on the side.

While the artwork might be anime inspired, it’s not anime. Filoni directed Avatar: The Last Airbender, a cartoon on Nickelodeon. Inspired by Japanese animation, it’s a healthy mashup of East and West animation. Being a fan of the style, the bright colors and rough lines in Star Wars Resistance pay tribute towards Japanese animation. While still being uniquely Western based.

Star Wars Resistance Is Kid Based

Star Wars is for kids. Lucas set the record straight on this debate a long time ago, in a galaxy far away. Disney, for the most part, continues to create content towards a young adult audience. The exception to this being Star Wars: Forces of Destiny (also created by Filoni).

Attempting to reach a wider audience, Star Wars Resistance is for kids in the age range of Forces of Destiny and Rebels. This doesn’t mean adults won’t be able to enjoy it, but it’s important to note the series is not aimed towards the usual young adult audience. For now, anyway. Star Wars Rebels started out much the same way. As its popularity grew, so did the depth of the series. It’s likely Filoni will follow the same blueprint for Resistance.

The YA and older age groups can look forward to the return of Star Wars: The Clone Wars in late 2019 on Disney’s streaming service.

No matter one’s age, Star Wars Resistance will tap into unexplored territory leading up to the events of The Force Awakens. Much like Star Wars Rebels did with A New Hope. All the content will be Canon while fleshing out additional characters the movies couldn’t.

Bringing a cast of new heroes into the mix, Star Wars Resistance will air at 10 pm EST on October 7, 2018. The new animated series airs on the Disney Channel, Disney XD, and other Disney platforms.

Let us know in the comments whether you’re excited for Star Wars Resistance, or giving it a pass.

Todd McFarlane Talks Spawn’s New Costume In Upcoming Reboot

Monkeys Fighting Robots

It’s been a while since we heard from the upcoming Spawn reboot.

Todd McFarlane is spilling the beans on the character’s new threads.

Spawn Film NYCC Todd McFarlane

According to Cinemablend, the director took time to discuss Spawn’s costume in the new film. Fans will be happy to hear the reboot is heading in the right direction. One such factor will be the title character’s look.

“Does Spawn have a dark mask and his body dark and then does he have a cape in the comic books? Yes, yes, yes,” says McFarlane. “Will he have all of that in the movie? Yes, yes, yes.”

The 1997 film did get a lot of criticism for its depiction of Spawn. For example, the character having wings instead of a cape is not a great idea. In addition, the character would often remove his mask.

Image Comics spawn

McFarlane hints there will be some changes in the movie. However, he makes it clear fans are in for a surprise.

“So it’s not like I’m going to give him wings instead of a cape and I’m not going to give him no mask instead of a mask,” he says. “There’s no going to be any of that. It just won’t be exactly what a hardcore fan is used to.”

Special effects artist Greg Nicotero will be working on Spawn. His company, KNB, specializes in makeup and visual effects. Look no further than their work on The Walking Dead.

The new film will star Oscar winner Jamie Foxx as Al Simmons/Spawn. Jeremy Renner will  appear as Twitch Williams.

Spawn is said to be aiming for release in 2019.

Review: THANOS LEGACY #1 – The Mad Titan aka Donny Cates

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Thanos Legacy #1 hits your local comic book store this week to bridge the gap between Thanos Wins and Infinity Wars. The book is written by Donny Cates, with art by Brian Level, colors by Jordan Boyd, and letters by Clayton Cowles.

Nothing is ever simple with Cates’ writing, as Thanos Legacy provides more questions than answers. This review will contain no spoilers, as the last page of the story will have people talking. We will analyze the tone and texture of the book, not the plot points.

Cates has a way with his writing where it is intense and also whimsical. He’s the Quentin Tarantino of comic book writers. Cates builds up his creations, just to publicly mock them a few panels later. He enjoys writing comic books, but also understands what comic books are, so the guy who invented Cosmic Ghost Rider doesn’t take himself too seriously. This style Cates has crafted is perfect for working on superhero comics, and Thanos Legacy is no exception. The story has power, weight, and drama, but it is also entertaining. Cates is an entertainer.

Level was tasked with following up Geoff Shaw’s work on Thanos Wins, and that is no easy task to ask any artist. Especially since Level had to recreate panels from Thanos Wins and Infinity War Prime; but he holds his ground. The cliffhanger mentioned above is powerful because Cates, Level, and Boyd are working together to deliver a powerful message.

Boyd’s colors are a drastic textural difference from Thanos Wins and Infinity War, to where it helps focus the story and keeps the narration self-contained. Since the book is heavily narrated, Cowles’ letter design needed to be spot on. Several pages are loaded with slim panels and Cowles keep the story flowing without taking away from the artwork.

Overall, Thanos Legacy #1 connects the dots and smacks you in the face with more questions. What more could you ask for in a book?
