Episode 155: Chris Burnham Interview • HEROES IN CRISIS Review

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Welcome back to the Monkeys Fighting Robots podcast! This week we chat about Tom King’s Heroes in Crisis, and artist Chris Burnham calls in to talk about his latest book DIE! DIE! DIE! written by Robert Kirkman of The Walking Dead fame.

DIE! DIE! DIE! is an over the top political, social commentary on today’s society, very reminiscent of Garth Ennis’ The Boys. The first story arc is a definite must-read.

Heroes in Crisis #1 is a gorgeous book. Clay Mann and Tomeu Morey have elevated comics to a new standard with issue one. Tom King comes out guns blazing in the first issue. If the issue is real, this fan will have an issue. If it is for shock value, that may be an issue as well. With eight more issues to go, this is a marathon, not a sprint. Trust the storyteller at this point.

After you read Heroes in Crisis #1, come back and let us know what you thought of the first issue.

Thanks for taking the time to listen to the podcast.

About Heroes in Crisis #1:
HEROES IN CRISIS, there’s a new kind of crisis threatening the heroes of the DC Universe, ripped from real-world headlines by New York Times bestselling author Tom King and artist Clay Mann: How does a superhero handle PTSD? How do DC’s Trinity—Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman—handle massacres and mass shootings? Welcome to Sanctuary, an ultra-secret hospital for superheroes who’ve been traumatized by crime-fighting and cosmic combat. Kicking off this limited series, something goes inexplicably wrong. It’s up to the DC Trinity of Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman to investigate—but can they get the job done in the face of overwhelming opposition?

Review: MAN-EATERS #1 Attacks The Dangers Of Patriarchy And Misogyny

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Man-Eaters by Chelsea Cain, Kate Niemczyk, and Rachelle Rosenberg is a brand new satirical comic that deftly discusses important issues like the dangers of patriarchy and misogyny while creating a world and mythology that draws the reader in. ManEaters

Man-Eaters #1
Written by: Chelsea Cain
Art by: Kate Niemczyk
Colors by: Rachelle Rosenberg
Letters by: Joe Caramagna
Cover by: Lia Miternique

Published by: Image Comics

A mutation in Toxoplasmosis causes menstruating women to turn into ferocious killer wildcats—easily provoked and extremely dangerous. As panic spreads and paranoia takes root, the fate of the world rides on the shoulders of one twelve-year-old girl.

Writing

It’s a tricky thing to try and discuss current events and politics in comics, especially in these ‘Comicgate’ days where it seems that everybody has a very polarizing opinion on just about any subject. The best way to do it is by just telling a good story and letting the themes come naturally. This is exactly what Chelsea Cain has done with Man-Eaters. She is telling a great story and creating a rich world, yet there is no doubt that Cain is trying to address some very important issues she just lets the story do the work. ManEaters

It’s the story itself as a direct attack on not only the dangers of a patriarchal society but of the casual misogyny many people express and not even be astute enough to be aware of; just check out the scene where a mother pulls a gun on her daughter because she’s afraid of what her daughter might turn into. It’s played subtlety but it’s deeply chilling. The reader isn’t hit over the head nor does this feel like a lecture the storytelling is excellent and entertaining the characters are relatable and quite funny; having the main character, Maude, address the reader directly is an excellent touch that bonds you with her immediately. Maude feels real from the get-go and is an excellent guide into this new world. ManEaters

Art

The art team of Kate Niemczyk, Rachelle Rosenberg and Joe Caramagnain is incredible. The influences on it range from anime/manga to indie comics masters like Chris Ware (Jimmy Corrigan/ACME Novelty Library), and more traditional comics. Small details like blood splatters on panel gutters and pages without panel borders create a very unique narrative flow and stylized look. There’s also a great use of full pages that aren’t necessarily ‘splash pages ‘in the traditional sense.  When you throw in the inventive use of infographic, fliers, and mixed media it really becomes a very visually arresting book and the images pop off the page.

Conclusion

There’s no doubt that many Man-Eaters is an ‘important’ book but it’s also a just a very good comic. Yes, it addresses issues that are important, but it also gives you a satisfying, entertaining and readable experience.  If you are looking to get some ideas and opinions across that is exactly the way to do it.ManEaters

STAR WARS RESISTANCE Episodic Synopsis Officially Announced

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The new animated series Star Wars Resistance is almost here and we’re officially nerding out. Always playing their cards close to the vest, the Disney Channel just announced the official synopsis for the first five episodes.

Star Wars Resistance is from the talented mind of Dave Filoni (creator), along with art direction provided by the experienced and battle-tested Amy Beth Christenson. The series focuses on an elite pilot squadron of the Resistance called The Aces, who reside on a water-based platform called the Colossus somewhere in the Outer Rim.

Star Wars Resistance Synopsis For Episodes 1-4

Watch The Aces trailer for Star Wars Resistance.

Episode 1 & 2: “The Recruit”

“X-wing pilot Kazuda Xiono is recruited for the Resistance but finds himself in over his head when Poe Dameron assigns him to a remote fueling station to spy on the First Order. Then, after Kaz boasts about being the best pilot around, he is forced to compete in a dangerous sky race.”

Star Wars Resistance Animated Series

It’s smart on Filoni’s part to incorporate Poe Dameron in the first episode. Plus, it seems like the show isn’t wasting any time getting to the racing aspect of the series. It should provide a substantial introduction to the main protagonist Kaz while letting the audience get adjusted to this new aspect of the Star Wars universe.

“The Recruit,” premieres October 7th.

Episode 2: “The Triple Dark”

“Kaz and BB-8 uncover information on an imminent pirate attack and must find a way to stop it.”

Poe obviously isn’t wasting time, sending Kaz and BB-8 off on a mission almost immediately. Could this pirate attack have connections to characters from Star Wars Rebels and The Clone Wars? Perhaps Filoni will drop a couple Easter eggs. Considering Star Wars Resistance might be following the same blueprint as Rebels, we’re hoping for a few nostalgic callbacks.

“The Triple Dark,” airs October 14th.

Episode 3: “Fuel for the Fire”

“Kaz befriends a sky racer named Rucklin who pressures him to take some rare and dangerous hyperfuel hidden in Yeager’s office.”

STAR WARS RESISTANCE First Trailer

While on the surface this seems like a filler episode, the episode will guest star Elijah Wood as Jace Rucklin. Filoni has a unique way of making filler content entertaining while deepening character development. Since Kaz gets in the action right off the bat, we’re looking forward to how this episode peels back his layers.

“Fuel for the Fire,” premieres October 21st.

Episode 4: “The High Tower”

“The First Order arrives at the platform for mysterious reasons and Kaz and BB-8 are determined to sneak into the tower to find out what they want.”

Image Via Disney Studios and Lucasfilm

Donald Faison is officially listed as a guest, meaning we’ll get a good look at his character Hype Fazon. Captain Phasma could also be first introduced in “The High Tower” too, which is fine by us. Although, it’d be nice if the Kylo Ren rumors were true and we got to see him as well.

“The High Tower,” airs October 28th.

Star Wars Resistance will air at 10 pm EST on October 7, 2018. The new animated series airs on the Disney Channel, Disney XD, and other Disney platforms.

What Is Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald?

At the end of the first film, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne). But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings.

In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.

FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD Trailer Reveals A Suprise Character

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Warner Brothers has released its final trailer for the highly anticipated Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. We can thank Ezra Miller for this pleasant surprise as he made it clear he was the one who wanted to release the video. If you don’t understand what I mean, watch the trailer for yourself.

The trailer kicks off with information we’ve known from the get-go. Jude Law’s Dumbledore is recruiting Newt Scamander to take down Grindelwald. As the trailer goes on a surprising reveal for Potterheads happens. We get a look at a woman in a circus who then turns into a snake, and not just any snake, it’s Nagini.

The sequel to Fantastic Beasts will feature Voldemort’s final Horcrux, portrayed by actress Claudia Kim. It’s unclear how the snake will factor into the film, but she seems to be involved in the circus that Ezra Miller’s appears in.

We also get a good look at Newt’s brother Theseus Scamander, as played by Callum Turner. He’s set to play a crucial role in the film alongside co-star Eddie Redmayne. Their relationship is a contentious one, as the tag of the trailer involved Newt capturing his brother much to his chagrin.

Are you excited to see Nagini in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald? Let us know in the comments below!

About Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween

Official Description: Halloween comes to life in a brand-new comedy adventure based on R.L. Stine’s 400-million-selling series of books.

The film is directed by Ari Sandel, written by Rob Lieber, and produced by Deborah Forte and Neal H. Moritz. Jeremy Ray Taylor is one of the kid stars here and if he looks familiar it’s because he’s also the star of another horror film, It (2017) and he also played a bully in the first Ant-Man from Marvel. Wendi McLendon-Covey might look familiar to fans of The Goldbergs, she’s the mom and uses her extensive comedic talents to play Taylor’s mom. Madison Iseman plays Taylor’s sister after coming off of the hit Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.

Goosebumps 2 features a cast that includes …

Wendi McLendon-Covey as Kathy Quinn
Madison Iseman as Sarah Quinn
Jeremy Ray Taylor as Sonny Quinn
Caleel Harris as Sam Carter
Chris Parnell as Walter
Ken Jeong as Mr. Chu
Jack Black as R. L. Stine
Avery Lee Jones as the voice of Slappy the Dummy (previously voiced by Jack Black)

jack black-trailer-goosebumps

Up until now the Goosebumps 2 trailers kept Jack Black’s involvement out. It was highly unlikely that Black wouldn’t appear, but it was still fun for there to be a bit of mystery around it. However, this is the business of selling tickets, and Sony knows they’ll sell a few more if people are assured Black will appear. This short but sweet trailer confirms that Black’s R.L. Stine is back in the film version of R.L. Stine’s books about one of R.L. Stine’s books running amok.

Margot Robbie’s BIRDS OF PREY Sets Early 2020 Release Date

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Warner Brothers has just confirmed their first DC release of 2020. The Wrap has confirmed that Margot Robbie’s Birds of Prey film is set to hit theaters February 7, 2020.

The film will see Robbie’s Harley Quinn team up with Black Canary, Huntress, and Renne Montoya. The plot will center around the group attempting to rescue Cassandra Cain from the main antagonist of the film, Black Mask.

Auditions for Birds of Prey are still underway, although, this past week The Hollywood Reporter released a list of names that were testing for parts in the film. Margaret Qualley (The Leftovers), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane) and Cristin Milioti (Black Mirror) are all up for the role of Huntress. Justina Machado (Jane the Virgin) and Roberta Colindrez (Vida) tested for Renne Montoya.

For the role of Black Canary, the studio is attempting to diverge from the comic iteration. WB is looking for diverse talent for the character, bringing in Gugu Mbatha-Raw (A Wrinkle in Time) and Jurnee Smolett-Bell (Underground) to read for the part.

Cathy Yan, best known for her film Dead Pigs, is set to direct the female-centric film. Robbie is also attached as a producer and has been heavily involved in the development of the film.

Robbie had this to say about the project:

“Actually, the ones that excite me most don’t have superpowers at all but they have, you know, pretty great backstories and all could kind of live in the world with Harley and create this cool dynamic. Because I don’t think girl groups… I mean all my girlfriends, we’re a huge girl gang and we’re not all the same person, everyone’s very different. I guess I was really trying to put that on screen — the way we exist in everyday life as a big girl gang. Why can’t we watch that in films more?”

INTERVIEW: Signature Tracks On Making Music For Reality And Fiction

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Signature Tracks creates the sounds behind reality TV like Keeping up with the Kardashians, The Bachelor, and The Price Is Right but they’ve also helped make Unfriended sound creepy and usher in the era of “screenlife” movies.

Monkeys Fighting Robots sat down with composers Russell Howard, David Lasman, and Adam Malka to discuss making music for both fiction and non-fiction, including the new Mario Van Peebles movie Armed starring William Fichtner, Ryan Guzman, and Columbus Short.

Talking Armed

Armed is about a former U.S. Marshall struggling to put his life together after a case gone wrong. A former colleague reappears in his life and explains all of the survivors of the man’s unit are suffering the same symptoms and that there may be a larger conspiracy at hand. The music is made up of an interesting blend of things:

What’s the music like for the action film? “It’s some hip-hop mixed in with real ethereal stuff like Lana Del Rey meets James Bond.”

In a sort of throwback to many 90s movie soundtracks “The film has about 10 songs we created for it plus we wrote the underscore.”

Included in the tracklist “Mario’s son is a rapper, and we did some songs with him. Those songs will be coming out on Spotify.”

Every film and director is different “We were able to get really creative with the songs we presented him [Mario Van Peebles]. We were able to think outside of the box. For instance, we were able to do a remake of House of the Rising Song which is just, like a thrasher version of it. It’s really bonkers. But it’s really amazing.”

More about Peebles process “Mario has a really great ear and really knows what he wants. We’d sit down with Mario, and he’d explain what he’d want, and we’d make it happen.”

About Signature Tracks

Signature Tracks is a collective of music-makers “We have about 30 composers. Russell oversees them. We all kind of work on projects together, pulling ideas from all over.”

Attention to detail “The music we create is the kind of stuff that can be on the radio. That’s the kind of quality we like to bring to projects like this.”

Fiction vs. Reality

What is the challenge to creating reality TV music? “It’s interesting because reality and unscripted is extremely demanding. Our skillset has to be so incredibly tight. Russell sometimes composes hundreds of different cues for a particular series in ten different genres. Everything from comedy to tension to writing full songs. We’re really well versed in translating our skills into various mediums.”

Superheroes

Signature Tracks is currently busy making the music for a series of hour-long docs that comic book fans will be interested in hearing about “We’re working on a really cool project right now with DC comics. It’s a documentary about Aquaman and one other character. We did some really cool stuff with the music.”

What’s the music for these docs going to sound like? “We’ve been heavily influenced by the music from the Dark Knight but also bringing in a lot of 2018 sounds, really cool electronica used with orchestral sounds.” The musical collective was free to do their separate, seperate from the upcoming Aquaman movie.

Spreading the love across their industry “There are so many great composers and musicians making music for film and TV today. Atticus Ross, No ID … there’s so much diversity with non-traditional sort of musicians coming into the mix of composing. We love it. We strive to have that same kind of rich diversity.”

Thanks to Signature Tracks and Impact24 PR for making this interview possible.

Star Wars Producer GARY KURTZ Passes Away At Age 78

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Gary Kurtz made history with George Lucas, producing hit films like American Graffiti, Star Wars: A New Hope, and Empire Strikes Back. Kurtz sadly passed away at the age of 78 on Sunday from cancer.

Playing a major role in the success of the Star Wars franchise, helping bring the first two films of the original trilogy to life on the big screen. Replaced as the producer for Return of the Jedi, Lucas and Kurtz parted ways due to creative differences.

“The toy business began to drive the [Lucasfilm] empire,” Gary Kurtz stated in a 2010 interview with the Los Angeles Times. “It’s a shame. They make three times as much on toys as they do on films. It’s natural to make decisions that protect the toy business, but that’s not the best thing for making quality films.”

After leaving Lucasfilm, Kurtz went on to produce iconic films like The Dark Crystal (1982) and Return to Oz (1985). In 1989 he even got to work with Mark Hamill again, co-producing the sci-fi movie Slipstream.

His first gig in the film industry was a big one, showing off his talents and skills at a young age. Working as an assistant director for Ride in the Whirlwind (starring Jack Nicholson), Kurtz quickly made a name for himself. Not only was he a director and producer, but a camera operator too. Movies more than a job for Gary Kurtz, they were his passion. He’ll truly be missed.

The Kurtz family released a statement saying, “Gary was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, colleague, and mentor, whose work and talent spanned filmmaking, photography, music, and cinema history. He was a Marine, a world traveler, an outdoorsman, and a kind, compassionate human being. Gary was a magnificent man, who will be hugely missed. His whole family thanks you for your loving thoughts.”

Rest in peace Gary Kurtz and “May the Force be with you, always.”
