Interview: Skottie Young And Aaron Conley On BULLY WARS

By
Manuel Gomez
-
August 29, 2018
Monkeys Fighting Robots

Skottie Young and Aaron Conley, between the two of them, have worked on everything from Deadpool to Rocket and Groot to Little Nemo! Now the two writer/artists have joined forces to co-create Bully Wars, a brand new all-ages title about a “Hunger Games-like contest known simply as the BULLY WARS—where the winner will rule the school!”

Skottie and Aaron sat down with us at Monkeys Fighting Robots to share a bit of what led to the creation of the book, the importance of all-ages comics, the genius of Mad Magazine, and much more.

Bully Wars

MFR: Skottie, first of all, thanks for taking time to talk to us at MFR!
Scottie Young: Of course, my pleasure. Thanks for checking out our new book.

Where did the idea for Bully Wars come from?
SY: Who knows. haha. It’s been floating around for almost 10 years and I can’t really remember what the initial spark was. I just wanted to tell a funny school story and I thought it would be interesting to try and see it thru a bullies eyes.

As an artist, why did you choose to not do the art yourself?
SY: Initially, when I wrote the first version of this back in 2009 or 10, I planned on drawing it. I thumbnailed like 140 pages or so. But I realized the story wasn’t quite there. It just wasn’t working. Something was missing and I wasn’t sure what it was. So I put in the “I’ll do this at some point in the future folder.” After so many years, that folder starts getting filled to the point that it will become impossible to do them all.

Aaron and I were actually cooking up something completely different at first. Small town, kids, bikes, monsters, we were pumped…the one weekend, out of nowhere, Stranger Things dropped and took over the planet. We talked that following Monday and were like “Well, there goes that idea.” haha. it was just too similar and we felt like there was going to be an onslaught of Strange Things like stuff to follow. That’s when I thought I would pitch him my old idea. Dust it off, get his fresh perspective and revisit the story about Rufus.

So what made you chose Aaron Conley as the artist then?
SY: Well, he’s amazing. I was in a Hardee’s drive-thru one morning when my friends over at the 11 O’Clock Comics podcast talked about Sabertooth Swordsman. I ordered on my phone in the drive-thru. I fell in love with his art, met him at a con that year and start talking about the possibility of working together on something. Eventually, I brought him on to crush an issue of Rocket Racoon and Groot and boy did he. Every page was a surprise and joy to look at. I loved working with him. I’m lucky that he trusts me enough to come along for this ride have made some people laugh!

Bully Wars

And what’s working with Aaron like? What’s the creative process?
SY: It’s so easy. I write stuff, he goes away and works his butt off and brings back pages so far beyond what I could imagine. I’m really spoiled with it comes to creative partners. Even though Aaron serves the scripts perfectly, I still feel that I’m surprised with each page he sends in. Like “oh snap, I didn’t see that panel like that! that’s awesome!” He’s just a real pro and a joy to work with.

Aaron, What kind of scripts do you get from Skottie?
Aaron Conely: Hilarious scripts!

So, what’s the process like for you then Aaron?
AC: I usually read Skottie’s script a few times, then break that down into really loose thumbnails. Starting a full page I usually just scribble everything that’s going on the page on photocopy paper until I get some nice expressions or body movement. I’ll usually assemble all that in photoshop so starts looking like a page, print that out on 8.5×11 paper in blue line, do a tighter pencil over that. After that, I scan the tight pencils, blow it up, print it out in blue line on bristol board and ink!

Aaron, ‘Bully Wars’ has such a distinct style. What made you settle on such a look for the book?
AC: I mainly wanted to pull a lot of my animation influences out and just do a lot of wacky facial expressions and exaggerated movements. I spent about a month designing the kids, but besides that everything was just designed in the moment. Just years of collecting stuff in my brain while reading too many comics and watching too many cartoons.Bully Wars
What made Image Comics the right home for ‘Bully Wars’?

SY: Image Comics is a great place for creative freedom. I wish there was more to say, but it’s really that. The whole team up there is just straight up supportive of every book that they choose to publish. Bully Wars is all ages but we aren’t speaking down. I feel like it would be easy for a more “all ages” publisher to put their hands on this project more here and there to make sure it checks all the boxes they need to. But Image just lets us create comics. It’s really great.

Where you guys specifically looking to do something more all ages?
SY: Yes. We discussed that up front and really wanted to take on the challenge of making a comic that would make everyone laugh, from kids to adults. There’s a lot of great all-ages comics out there and we wanted to join them in the fun of getting comics in people hands, especially kids if we can.

AC: If anything, I think it’s a good light to the darkness. Comics still seem to want to go down that really dark road any chance they get. All ages stuff seems to be a little more light-hearted and comedic. It’s nice to have something out there you can pick up and have a good chuckle, or in our case maybe a good “GROSS!”Bully Wars
Do you think we need more all ages/accessible titles in comics?

SY: Sure. Again, there’s a lot of great comics. So I’m not sure if it’s about the quantity that’s out there or more about awareness of what is out there. We have some amazing, successfully titles that come from Scholastic and other book publishers, and companies like BOOM have done a great job of reaching that market as well. I love Image Comics and wanted to see if Aaron and I and the rest of our team to join that challenge in getting kids into comic

Did you guys have any influences for this idea? Did you look at any other comics/comic strips/series for inspiration? I see a little Barry Ween: Boy Genius in there. And I can’t help but feel a Mad Magazine vibe as well (especially with all the visual gags/puns).
SY: I think I was watching Invader Zim at the time the idea started to form. So there’s definitely some of that level of brattiness to it. I love Barry Ween, and anyone who’s seen my tattoos knows that Mad Magazine is where I came from. Diary of Wimpy Kid and Captain Underpants were thrown in the influence gumbo later. But yea, a little of this, a little of that.

AC: Yes! Classic Mad for sure, Jake Davis and Wally Wood are some of my all-time favorite artists, so those guys are going to have an impact on everything I do. I also mentioned above how animated shows have been a big influence. I’m pulling a lot from Ren & Stimpy, Marvelous Misadventures Of Flapjack, and Invader Zim to name just a few.

How much do you have planned for the series?
SY: We have a pretty good idea of what we’ll do for the 3 arcs if people out there show up and love the book like we do. Like all indie comics, it really comes down to people showing up and checking it out. The second arc is going to be a blast!

Bully Wars

Do you guys have a favorite character from your cast?
SY: I love them all, but I just love Rufus. Aaron draws him so great. His expressions are wonderful.

AC: Rufus has been and an absolute blast from the minute he showed up. I’m able to do really some wacky stuff and take him off model a good bit. Plus, it’s always a nice challenge to try and top the last drawing. Just the other day I did a drawing of Rufus and I was thinking, “This is the perfect Rufus!”

What do you guys hope a reader takes from ‘Bully Wars’?
SY: I just hope they have fun and laugh. Look, we’re telling a story about bullies and bullying so hopefully, we give you something to think about on that front. But at the heart of things, Aaron, Jean, Nate, and kent just like making comics and hope you have fun reading them. That’s really all we can ask

AC: “Gross!”

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The special effects of The Walking Dead on AMC come together because of Greg Nicotero, Todd McFarlane announced Wednesday afternoon Nicotero would create the new Spawn design for the upcoming McFarlane/ Blumhouse Spawn feature film.

“I’m a long-time fan of Greg’s work and the projects his company, KNB have done throughout the years. Working with him once again, to re-invent the Spawn ‘look’ so it will match the supernatural theme in the movie, is going to be a fun process,” said McFarlane.

McFarlane added, “Greg and I worked together on the FIRST movie when he designed the original Spawn costume…since then, we’ve both gained 20 MORE years of experience and have both evolved as artists. So for those of you wondering – Greg will be in charge of the NEW Spawn ‘costume.’ And no, it’s not going to look ANYTHING like the first movie.”

Greg Nicotero To Design Spawn For Todd McFarlane's Film

In the first film from 1997, Nicotero worked animatronic creature effects and special makeup effects.

So far, Jamie Foxx has been cast as Spawn and Academy Award nominee Jeremy Renner has been tapped to play Twitch. McFarlane wrote the script and will make his directorial debut.

McFarlane has stated in the past this version of Spawn will be more supernatural and have a hard R-rating. No release date has been announced for the film.

EXTERMINATION #2 Review: Searching For A Purpose

By

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Mimic loses his groceries, an Angel doesn’t get his wings, and Ahab gains a new Hound all in this week’s EXTERMINATION #2 as Ed Brisson opens his second installment of the series and tries to put young Hank, Scott, Bobby, Warren, and Jean back where they belong.

WRITTEN BY:  Ed Brisson
ART BY: Pepe Larraz
COLORS: Marte Garcia
LETTERS: Joe Sabino

WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

Spoiler 13

EXTERMINATION #2 SPOILERS TOO!

To see what happened the last issue, click on the writer’s name below.

EXTERMINATION 2-1

Summary

EXTERMINATION #2 opens with the young Cable shooting Mimic in the middle of the grocery store (possibly killing him) and then heading to the X-Mansion to attempt to capture the young Beast, Angel, Cyclops, and Marvel Girl. Young Cyclops and Marvel Girl put up a good fight against Cable however he escapes with Angel and later cuts off his wings.

Meanwhile, during the fight with Cable outside, the other X-Men are met by Ahab and his Hounds from the future inside the X-Mansion. As the issue ends, it appears as though Old Man Logan has become one of Ahab’s new Hounds. Are Ahab and Cable connected? Why are people from the future hunting down X-Men? Furthermore, what’s the real purpose of this event? We will have to wait to get more answers in EXTERMINATION #3.

EXTERMINATION 2-2

What’s The Point?

This issue felt busy, cluttered, and gave very few reactions or purpose moving forward. Brisson appears to be throwing every X-Men in the tool shed at the readers to mask the lack of answers and intention of the narrative. Why is a young Cable hunting or trying to kill the original, time displaced, X-Men? Brisson gives no clues as to the purpose of the event.

Brisson has told readers the same story throughout the first two comics in the series without any new information. The characters now know young Cable is hunting the O.G.’s, but fans already knew his material prior. Brisson needed to progress the story much further than this, especially with only three more parts remaining.  For example, Brisson begins the story by killing, tranquilizing or possibly shocking Mimic. However, nothing is addressed about it after the fact. Why would Cable take him out? What is the importance of this event to the plot?

The only new information readers get is Mimic is shot, Cable is desperate, Angel gets his wings cut off, and Old Man Logan is now a hound for Ahab.  However, none of this seems like pertinent information to the story. Is Brisson hiding a lack of plot and design with loud action, fantastic art by Pepe Larraz, and classic fan favorites? So far, readers aren’t any farther ahead in the story than page one of issue one. With only three more issues to go, Brisson will need to regurgitate answers fast to make sense out of this story.

EXTERMINATION 2-3

The Art

Larraz’ art is brilliantly vibrant, clear, and immediately grabs fans attention from the second page as Cable is standing over Mimic gunned down in a grocery store. His style fits perfectly for the X-Men universe, and Larraz probably seized the opportunity to work on this comic with Brisson for the amazing cameos of heroes sprinkled in on each page. Even though Larraz’ art is incredibly detailed and dynamic, its Marte Garcia’s colors that truly help to bring the page to life. The radiant colors of energy blasts and explosions amplify the intensity of the action throughout the issue.

If there were one small issue, it would be with the overly dark and shadowy faces of the X-Men, especially outside of the mansion during the rainstorm. Garcia was attempting to set the mood and foreshadow the upcoming battle. However, the facial reactions of the characters are also important in telling the story and can add just as much to the climate and tone of the issue.

EXTERMINATION 2-4

Should you buy this issue and/or add this to your pull list?

Yes, but proceed with caution. If you want to see the original Fab Five, phenomenal art, as well as tons of X-characters, this series is totally up your alley. If you’re searching for direction and answers moving forward with the X-characters, all X-series, and continuity, you won’t get them this week.

Maybe Brisson will give fans these answers soon but with three issues left readers can only hope that the X-Men can return to the days of old. Therefore, be vigilant as you advance through the remaining issues.  Currently, the series primarily seems like a way to showcase X-Men. Hopefully, EXTERMINATION doesn’t exterminate what’s left of the X-universe and their distinguished tradition.

NEW MUTANTS: DEAL SOULS #6 Is A Fantastically Weird Ending

By
Anthony Composto - EIC

Monkeys Fighting Robots

New Mutants: Dead Souls #6 is out today, ending the already wonderfully strange story in even weirder fashion that anyone was probably expecting.

Everything comes to a head as Magik confronts Shan on her true motivations. The book is written by Matthew Rosenberg, drawn by Adam Gorham, colored by Michael Garland, and lettered by Clayton Cowles.

new mutants dead souls 6 review

Author’s note: Here’s all you need to know: after reading the last page of this comic, I exclaimed “WHAT THE F*CK?!” out loud.

The X-Men books are in a renaissance right now, and Matthew Rosenberg has been a huge part of that (along with Kelly Thompson, Tom Taylor, Ed Brisson, and others). He understands these characters on a deep level, and he brings all of that passion to his writing. He’s brought a level of weirdness back to the fringe X-books, and nowhere is that more clear than in his New Mutants (except maybe his Multiple Man).

Rosenberg’s strength is in his character work. He just knows how to write likable, relatable characters. He makes you care, which is why when tragedy strikes, it hurts that much more.

But all of Rosenberg’s work would be for naught without Adam Gorham’s art. Gorham’s style, combined with Michael Garland’s colors, is the right balance of edgy and emotional to deliver the gut punches. It looks like something you’d get in an independent horror comic, but in a mainstream superhero title. And, at the same time, it hits the humor beats just as well as the action beats, creating that quirky tone that makes the New Mutants so beloved.

This series has shown the range and versatility of these characters. It’s been fun, funny, tragic, and complex. Most importantly, it’s been interesting. Issue six hits all of those notes in itself. This is a total cliche, but it’s an emotional roller coaster that leaves you wanting more. Correction, not wanting. Needing more.

With the recent announcement that Rosenberg is co-writing the return of Uncanny X-Men, it’s clear that his New Mutants wasn’t just a fun miniseries. It planted seeds, and fans are going to want to see what those seeds grow into.

New Mutants: Deal Souls #6 is an insane book full of spoilers on every page, so please forgive the vague review. Just make sure to pick it up and read it ASAP before the internet ruins it for you.

Review: VENOM: FIRST HOST #1 Could Be The Next GUARDIANS Movie

By
Matthew Sardo
-
Monkeys Fighting Robots

As average a character as Eddie Brock is, you forget how cosmic the symbiote is. This is a plot point Mike Costa and Mark Bagley plan to change with Venom: First Host #1, out this week.

Bagley’s clean-cut lines, Costa’s jokes, and Dono Sánchez-Almara bright colors give this book a Marvel Cinematic Universe quality. The first issue sets up the five-issue mini-series very well. The main characters are introduced and there is a hint of intrigue. With four more issues, the crisis has yet to be revealed. The book is well paced and the last page makes you want issue two right now.

When reading comics now, there are so many genres and styles that push the envelope of what a comic book can be that it then becomes hard to critique a formulaic book that feels stuck in the 90s. Venom: First Host (2018) #1 is not great, but it is also not bad. As a person who’s read almost every one of Bagley’s books, I want him to push the envelope with his art. Don’t give the reader Venom from the 90s, I want to see Bagley dig deep and take all that life experience (good and bad), and give us something new. There is a panel in the book where you can see hints of this Venom I speak of, and it is glorious.

Venom
There is a different look to this version of Mark Bagley’s Venom, and we need to see more of it.

With that said, I encourage Costa to push the envelope too. This is only the first issue; next week, our minds might be blown away by what Bagley and Costa reveal. That fact that the book is weekly makes me want to read it even more – it gives the book a TV show feel and the seven-day wait builds the anticipation.

If you are a fan of the 90s and Bagely, Venom: First Host #1 knocks it out of the park. If you want something more, you have to wait a week.

Review: WEB OF VENOM: VE’NAM #1 – Cates Goes Predator On Us!

By
Matthew Sardo
-
Monkeys Fighting Robots

Donny Cates writes his best Predator film with Web of Venom: Ve’nam #1, and Juanan Ramirez compliments Cates with high octane action-packed storyboards.

Web of Venom: Ve’nam #1 hits your local comic book store this week, and it should be recommended reading for every Sony executive if he or she wants to expand the Venom Cinematic Universe (VCU).

When Venom first arrived on the scene in Amazing Spider-Man #300, he was a big scary monster that would give you nightmares. Cates has brought back that feeling with a modern, gritty flare. Cates also likes his stories to be over the top insanity, so the addition of Wolverine to the story makes perfect sense.

Review WEB OF VENOM: VE'NAM #1 - Cates Goes Predator On Us!

The plot of the story is straightforward, kind of like the first Predator film. S.H.I.E.L.D. makes a platoon of symbiote soldiers (sym-soldiers), and they go MIA in 1966 Vietnam. Nick Fury has the bright idea to send Wolverine over there to track them down. Needless to say, the last 25 pages are one giant FUBAR.

The opening three pages would be a brilliant homage to every epic Vietnam war film if they were tripping on acid watching Alien. Cates knows horror and Ramirez uses spectacular angles to amplify the suspense. The camera angle is looking up, so the book feels on top of you, almost suffocating the reader. The blood-soaked pages in Vietnam will be etched in your memory forever.

Review WEB OF VENOM: VE'NAM #1 - Cates Goes Predator On Us!

Felipe Sobreiro’s colors give the book a vintage feel. He also keeps the reader off balance going back and forth with bright and dark pages. It’s tough to judge lettering on a digital copy, but the color combination of the thought balloons didn’t work, the outline made them look like stickers. Clayton Cowles compliments the action sequences with quality fonts for sound effects.

What surprised me was how much of an SOB Nick Fury is in this issue. Cates pulls no punches with Fury and makes him the Paul Reiser of this Aliens story.

Overall, Cates and Ramirez provide a fun story that expands the Venom Universe without hurting it or oversaturating the brand. Put it on your MUST READ list.

SPINNING OUT OF THE PAGES OF VENOM! As the United States of America struggled through the Vietnam War, Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. needed a secret weapon – and when an ancient creature was discovered at an archaeological dig site, he was sure he’d found it. In reality, the discovery was an ancestor of the Klyntar symbiotes…and would become a waking nightmare for a platoon of American soldiers!

DAREDEVIL ANNUAL #1 Review: When Misty Met Murdock

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Pre-bionic arm Misty Knight, Hydra’s mutant genetic hormone, and a tale of respect in this week’s DAREDEVIL ANNUAL #1 as Erica Schultz makes her debut with the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen. Let’s dive in and see how it was!

WRITTEN BY: Erica Schultz
ART BY: Marcio Takara
COLORS: Marcelo Maiolo
LETTERS: Clayton Cowles

WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

Spoilers 14

DAREDEVIL SPOILERS TOO!

To see what happened the last issue, click on the writer’s name below.

DD annual 1-1

Summary

This annual is a simple tale of when Misty met Matt Murdock, but as Daredevil. The story opens with Detective Misty Knight working the streets as a body falls on her car from a building above. After tracking down the perpetrators responsible, Detective Knight finds Daredevil trying to stop the two criminals. Of course, Misty and Daredevil don’t see eye to eye, and the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen manages to escape without getting taken into the station.

Later, readers find out that Frankie Fear, one of the perpetrators, is dying and wants to create a formula that will save his life. So, he’s been kidnapping ESU students and forcing them to make a serum. As fans would expect, Frankie takes the formula and hulks out into a huge monster leaving Misty and Daredevil to take him down. The Devil and Detective work together, lock up Frankie, and Misty gains Daredevil’s respect by the end.

DD annual 1-2

The Goods

Schultz’ debut on DAREDEVIL had a couple of good bright spots to highlight. Schultz’ story had an element of simplicity that was refreshing and down to Earth. Often, comics tend to step WAY outside the box to grab the readers attention. However, Schultz made this issue more of a detective story with shades of crime drama, kidnapping, and murder mixed in. Misty had to find the killer and work with a vigilante, who she didn’t trust, to solve the investigation.

In general, Schultz’ plot was clear and uncomplicated, which isn’t a bad thing. Now, the story dipped into the ”super” realm once Schultz explained to fans that Frankie Fear needed Mutant Growth Hormone (MGH) to attempt to cure his cancer, but the story didn’t get nuts until the end. Plus, the ending wrapped up well, and the story ultimately showed Misty beginning to accept and respect Daredevil, which was a great plot thread to wrap around from the start of the issue.

DD annual 1-3

The Art

Marcio Takara did a fantastic job showing movement throughout the issue. Every punch, kick, leap, and  5-foot fall emphasized directions and force in each motion and panel. Also, Clayton Cowles letters showed impact, intensity, and anger behind all actions throughout the annual. Furthermore, Cowles lettering led the reader perfectly from panel to panel while Takara emphasized the characters movements by focusing on the interactions between the heroes and villains while dropping out the background to concentrate on the important elements of each fight. Overall, the art contributed to Schultz’ story and complimented the annual well.

DD annual 1-4

Should you buy this issue and/ or add this series to your pull list?

Annuals are generally difficult to get into because often, they are separate, stand-alone stories that have nothing to do with the current overall arc. Also, Charles Soule has been killin’ it with his run on DAREDEVIL telling some crazy-awesome stories.  Therefore, Schultz had an uphill battle to grab the readers attention in the first place. The issue told an entertaining story, but it was basically, a one-shot taking place in the past that doesn’t affect the current run at all. If you don’t buy it, you aren’t missing anything from the overall story.

If you do buy it, it had some cool moments, but I don’t know if it’s necessarily required. Even though the story was a refreshing change of pace, nothing stood out as exceptional. However, this shouldn’t sway you from adding DAREDEVIL to your pull list. Overall, Soule’s run has been stellar. So, save the money this week but add DAREDEVIL to your pull list going forward. If you need proof, take a look at my last couple reviews of DAREDEVIL. Soule and Phil Noto are doing amazing things with the character right now.

Review: GUNDAM BUILD DIVERS Episode 21

By
Anthony Wendel
-
Monkeys Fighting Robots

The ramifications of the previous episode of Gundam Build Divers are shown in detail and it is slowly helping to rebuild the quality of the entire series.

Summary

As the Build Divers search for Sarah, Riku is cornered and is forced to battle the Orge.

SPOILER ALERT

Review

It’s hard to believe just two episodes ago this series had hit such a low point. The series has decided to put out all the stops and ensure the plot has consequences moving forward. All of GBN knows Sarah is the cause of the recent bugs and has essentially branded her public enemy number one.

The most compelling aspect of this twist with the plot is how everyone reacts to it. Though many are sympathetic to the plight of the Build Divers for their comrade, others know Sarah is a danger to the network. Instead of simply having a wrong or right side to this argument, a lot of deeper elements are addressed and the discussion isn’t as cut and dry as one would think it would be.

Gundam Build Divers

The rematch between Riku and Orge also lives up to the hype and seems to channel some of the more intense fight from back in Gundam Build Fighters. Both combatants fight to the fullest with Orge intent on discovering if Riku is a worthy opponent but Riku himself more worried about finding Sarah before anyone else does. This battle felt intense and wat only part of the great draw of the episode but not only reason worth watching it.

With only three episodes to you, the series is buildings towards a great ending. Keep it up Gundam Build Divers. You might just be able to secure an above average or maybe even very good rating as a series.
