PREACHER Feature: “Gonna Hurt”

Monkeys Fighting Robots

“Gonna Hurt” is full of painful moments (particularly for Cassidy), but it’s also the funniest episode yet of Preacher.   Whether you’re looking for action, drama, or a baby crocodile to the genitals, you’ll find it here.

Preacher Feature is a weekly look into the AMC show Preacher based on the comic book of the same name by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. In this column, Josh Versalle gives a breakdown of the events from the show, including how they relate to the comics, and speculates as to what’s going on and what might be coming up. So take heed, as SPOILERS follow.

Need to catch up on last week’s action?  Look no further.

God is…kind of a dick

Tulip goes looking for the Grail, but finds out they’ve relocated.  On the road back to Angelville (what is it about that road?) she once again encounters God.  This time He’s in full mid-life crisis mode: motorcycle, ear ring, much younger woman (though, to be fair to God, I guess all women are younger than Him).  He tells Tulip she’s helping with His plan and doing so by screwing up (the O’Hare curse).  Tulip doesn’t take that kind of shit, even off God, and tells Him off.  He sends her flying against her car and disappears.

God and Blonde Mary Steele-StieffelPreacher

“If you stay, it’s gonna hurt”

TC uses his surgical skills and his homemade anesthetic to remove the bullet Cassidy took in the chest last episode.  The anesthesia “lowers the inhibitions” and makes Cass even chattier than normal, telling TC about the various times he’s been shot, stabbed, and mutilated.  TC notices that for all Cassidy’s war stories, there isn’t a single scar on his well-inked body and gets suspicious, but Cass sends him off for some swamp consommé.

Jesse tells Cassidy what Jody and TC’ll do to him if they find out he’s a vampire and tries to get Cass to leave, but Cass refuses to go anywhere without Tulip.  Furious and out of ideas, Jesse stabs Cass to reopen his wound.  Jody is sharper than a gator-skinning knife, though, and can tell something shady is going on.  He takes Jesse to local churches to look for addicts who may want to trade their souls to Marie for sobriety, but the only part of Angelville that seems to interest them is The Tombs.

“Every curse can be broken.”

Tulip goes looking for a way to help free Jesse from Angelville and Marie’s grasp.  She’ll do anything to help him including picking locks, appraising TC’s dingle, and infiltrating the Boyds.  It’s this last item that gets her in the most trouble and last we see of her, she’s in a stand-off with Madame Boyd.

Cassidy, unable to get Tulip out of his head, goes to Marie and asks her for the love spell she had told him about, though I guess he wasn’t paying attention to the part about murdering the man she used it on (presumably Jesse’s grandfather, and the man whose portrait she’s staring at when Cass walks in).

After obtaining the love potion, Cassidy decides to have a celebratory drink of blood from one of TC’s chickens.  Unfortunately for him, TC has a certain fondness for chickens and catches Cass in the act.  He calls Jody and they have him strung up and waiting for the sunrise.  Jesse only has one way to get them out of this predicament and so we find out what the mysterious Tombs really are: an underground arena that features a liberal glue-huffing policy and fights to the death.  As the episode closes, Cassidy is squaring off against Hal, the pervy schoolteacher from last episode.

Accolades:

The show is at its best when the characters are going back and forth with outlandish stories and conspiracy theories, which is exactly what Gary Tieche and the rest of the writing crew deliver in “Gonna Hurt”.

Director John Grillo (who has done cinematography for Westworld and The Leftovers) mixes things up visually throughout the episode.  The drawing of the burning vampire come to life and Cassidy’s wound closing, shot from the inside, both stand out.  The 50’s horror movie-inspired flashback mixes horror and camp perfectly.

Ruth Negga shines in the episode: delivering quips, manipulating TC, daydreaming about beating up God.  So, too, does Joseph Gilgun as Cassidy, who delivers the episode’s funniest line: “I’m a bloody vampire in Voodoo Disneyland, I SHOULD be their main attraction.”

From Panels to Screen:

In the comics, God also tells Tulip “I am a loving God, but DON’T PUSH IT.”, but it’s in reference to Jesse wanting to track him down.  Now that He’s got Tulip looking to kick His ass, too, He’d better watch his dog-suited back.

Don't Push It Preacher Comic

The fights in the Tombs are reminiscent of The Good Old Boys, a one-shot Preacher comic focusing on Jody and TC.  In it, the two henchmen make money by having Jody fight all challengers (including a gorilla) to the death in a pit.

Looking Forward:

Three episodes in and we still haven’t seen what Eugene and Hitler are up to.  I know I can’t be the only one eagerly awaiting their return.

What will become of Cassidy?  I don’t doubt that he’s tougher than a soulless high school teacher, but what happens when the fight is over?  Can Jesse help him escape Jody’s wrath?  And how much did Marie tell Jesse about her conversation about with Cass?  Does Jesse even want to see him escape?

Franchise Opportunities: The FAST AND FURIOUS Series Has Outgrown Dominic Toretto

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The Fast and the Furious truly is truly the little street-racing thriller that could. Made for just $38 million, director Rob Cohen’s 2001 film was a breakout hit that summer, bringing in more than $200 million worldwide. Of course, a franchise followed, but no one could have predicted that what started essentially as a car-chase riff on Point Break would evolve into one of the most successful film franchises of the new millennium. Across the eight installments to date, the Fast and Furious franchise has earned more than $5 billion across the globe, including billion-dollar grossers in Furious 7 and last year’s The Fate of the Furious.

As the series has gone on, its original cast has abandoned ship and returned, several fan favorites (like Sung Kang’s Han and Gal Gadot’s Gisele) have moved on and big-name stars like Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham and Kurt Russell have taken on recurring roles. Perhaps most notably, the death of Paul Walker in 2013 cast a pale over the production of director James Wan’s Furious 7 and led to his character Brian being retired altogether in the series’ most legitimately powerful moment. Yet, with all this growth, one thing has remained the same: Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto remains front and center. Considering how much the films have changed in the past 17 years, perhaps it’s time for Dom himself to ride into the sunset.

This week brought the greatest reason yet to question Dom’s position as de facto patriarch of his, ahem, “family.” The upcoming Hobbs and Shaw spinoff — directed by David Leitch (Deadpool 2) and starring Johnson and Statham back in their titular roles — has just cast Idris Elba as the film’s villain. Now that the franchise is attracting celebrated stars like Elba, Charlize Theron and Luke Evans, it feels like an antiquated notion for Diesel to be indefinitely locked in as the lead. Even the Star Wars franchise has diversified its focus (especially in recent films), allowing Rey to break the Skywalker streak and heroes like Jyn Erso and Han Solo to headline their own adventures. And if the Fast and Furious series intends to go on (as Universal so clearly wants it to), it needs to be allowed to evolve. Part of that means downgrading Dom’s role as the protagonist of the ensemble cast.

Dom has always been the stoic head of the franchise and, as such, has led six of the eight films to date. However, all of his core relationships — with sister Mia (Jordana Brewster), wife Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) and, of course, Brian (Walker) — have been pretty much resolved. In fact, his brotherhood with Brian was so beautifully wrapped up in Furious 7 that The Fate of the Furious felt inherently superfluous. Director F. Gary Gray wound up tapping into the only semblance of a lingering story thread Dom still had, namely his dalliance with government agent Elena (Elsa Pataky). By the end, Elena is killed, and Dom and Letty take in her son with Dom, whom they name after Brian. But where else can Dom’s story really take him? After all, fatherhood was ultimately the reason given that Brian and Mia retired from the high-speed life of crime. So it stands to reason that Dom might be next in line to cash in and tap out, turning his attention to raising his son.

The downside of this, of course, is what it could mean for Letty’s continued role in the franchise. It’s hard to imagine Rodriguez appearing without Diesel by her side, but Fast and Furious would be hard-pressed to find another character better suited to take over in Dom’s absence. Perhaps she could inherit the core series in some way, keeping Dom’s spirit infused into the group even if he remains largely offscreen. Give Letty something personal to fight for, and allow her to rally the troops herself, keeping Dom at bay (except for a possible cameo appearance). Such an approach could work, and allow Fast and Furious to let another of its original stars truly have her time in the spotlight. Pivoting this way could stay true to the series and pave the way for exciting new story possibilities. Plus, it’s never been a better time for a female-led action franchise, internet trolls notwithstanding.

Fate of the Furious

Then, of course, there are all those reports of an on-set feud between Diesel and Johnson, leading to the pair sharing virtually no screen time in The Fate of the Furious. From a business standpoint, Universal is much more likely to want to get into bed with Johnson, seeing as his appeal is much broader than Diesel’s. For instance, Diesel’s last live-action, non-Fast project, xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, made just $44 million domestically but $346 million worldwide. On the other hand, Johnson’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was the fourth highest-grossing film of 2017, with $405 million domestically and $962 million worldwide. If tensions between the two remain high, the studio may ultimately have to choose which one to throw their support behind. Who do you think will remain onboard long-term, especially given that Dom’s narrative possibilities are severely limited by now?

Complicating matters is Diesel’s role as a producer on the series dating back to 2009’s Fast & Furious. However, Universal is already showing signs of taking the franchise beyond Diesel’s purview. In addition to Hobbs and Shaw, the studio is teaming with Dreamworks Animation to create an animated series for Netflix that will center on Dom’s teenage cousin, Tony Toretto. At the moment, Diesel is reportedly onboard for at least two more Fast films, but it’s possible (likely?) that the franchise could be lining up for the day when Dom will no longer be the face of the series. Let’s not forget that Universal’s been known to drastically change plans (e.g., their monster-filled Dark Universe). So only time will tell how long Dom is destined to monopolize the Fast and Furious films.

Review: GREEN LANTERNS #50 Sets Up A New Story in a Mysterious Way

Monkeys Fighting Robots
This issue of Green Lanterns intrigues with a mystery but fails everywhere else.

This issue’s number says a bit about our rookie Green Lanterns. These two relatively new Lanterns were given their own series while the veterans were off during the launch of Rebirth. Neither had a series before and couldn’t rely on the popularity of Hal Jordan to keep it safe. Despite this, the pair were popular enough to get to issue 50, their anniversary issue. We had fantastic storylines that made our heroes feel human and relatable, bringing in many readers with each arc. Now on this anniversary issue, we begin a new arc with Dan Jurgens. What new adventure shall our Green Lanterns go on for their anniversary issue?

green lanterns 50 cover

**Some Spoilers Below**

Story:

We find ourselves hopping all across the galaxy to see the Green Lanterns facing difficulties. First, we see John Stewart facing off against a powerful new enemy named Eon, who has a space fleet backing him up. Then, we see Guy Gardner, and Kilowog finds a powerful alien, brutally injured, warning the pair of this threat. While all of that is going on, Simon and Jessica team up with Kyle Rayner to save a guardian, who is in a terrible storm. The thing that connects all of these events is the fact all of the Lantern rings are working against their wearers.

Green lanterns 50 p1

This issue focused too much on the story going forward instead of the characters themselves. While that wouldn’t be a problem, especially considering there are some interesting ideas here, we need to remember this is the anniversary issue. These kinds of issues should be dedicated to either ending an arc or honoring the run thus far. We don’t even get that much time with Simon and Jessica, and it’s their series!  This could have been a celebration of how far both of them have come since the start of the series.

As mentioned before, there are some interesting plot points laid out here for the coming arc. I’ve never seen rings act against their wearers before in the fashion they do here. John is trying his best to hold back the attack, asking his ring to send out a distress beacon. The ring responds no. No codes. No sci-fi babble. It simply says no. This story may have left me wanting a bit more, but this mystery does have me intrigued.

green lanterns 50 p2

Art:

Mike Perkins is illustrator on this issue and, unfortunately, it doesn’t fit. The art style he has is more suited to a horror story than it does a Lantern one. It is strange to see some of the faces of the humans look scarier than Kilowog’s. The colorists don’t help the issue either with dark colorwork. Even with horror-themed arcs, the Green Lanterns are drawn and colored brightly to pop off the page. Hopefully, the team is able to step up their game, because right now, it isn’t a good look for the story.

Conclusion:

This wasn’t just a bad anniversary issue, but a generally bad issue. While the story does hint at an intriguing mystery, it’s all over the place. The arc needs to straighten itself out before it becomes too much hassle for even the biggest fans.

Spider-Man And Doctor Strange Creator Steve Ditko Dead At 90

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The Marvel universe is feeling a lot smaller now.

Steve Ditko, co-creator of Spider-Man, has died. He was 90 years old.

Steve Ditko Spider Man Doctor Strange

According to People magazine, a social worker found him in his New York apartment. The cause of death is said to be arteriosclerosis and cardiovascular disease.

A native of Pennsylvania, Ditko was born in 1927. He would create several characters at Marvel and DC Comics in his long career.

With Stan Lee, Ditko co-created Spider-Man for the Amazing Fantasy #15. As Rolling Stone reports, Lee came up with the name, but Ditko would create the costume, the web-shooters and the Spider-Signal. Soon after, the character’s popularity lead to the Amazing Spider-Man title. During his four year run, Ditko would also receive writing credit for plotting the stories.

Steve Ditko Spider Man

Ditko is known for creating several villains during his time on Spider-Man. Some of these foes include Doctor Octopus, Sandman, Lizard, Electro, and the Green Goblin. His style includes expressive reactions and emphasis on mood.

Ditko would leave the series after thirty-eight issues of Amazing Spider-Man. The reasons for his departure are not entirely clear. Some say he quit after a disagreement over who the Green Goblin would be, but he would deny this rumour.

Apart from Spider-Man, he is known for co-creating Doctor Strange and Squirrel Girl. His best known artwork includes psychedelic visuals and surrealist backgrounds. Ditko is thought to have drawn Iron Man’s red and gold look, but the identity of the artist is uncertain.

Steve Ditko Doctor Strange

On the DC side of things, he is the creator of Captain Atom, Hawk and Dove, and the Question. His character Mr. A is a more edgy version of the Question. This would have an influence on Alan Moore’s creating Rorschach.

Unlike Lee, Ditko is said to have been a recluse. He did not grant interviews or speak publicly about his work. Ditko is given an onscreen credit in the Spider-Man movies and Doctor Strange.

He is thought to have been single for the whole of his adult life. Nor is he said to have any  surviving family members.

Ditko will be missed.

Review: STEVEN UNIVERSE: ‘Reunited’ And It Feels So Good

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The two part Steven Universe episode Reunited ends the week of new episodes. What happens next is intense to say the least.

WARNING: SPOILERS

Summary

Steven brings everyone together for Ruby and Sapphire’s wedding.

Review

A lot happens in this episode. First off, give credit where credit is due because the wedding was delightful, the opening song was charming, and Peridot looked adorable in her dress. With these little details acknowledged and out of the way it’s time to get into the main event.

Blue and Yellow Diamond arrive on the planet to claim the cluster, the world destroying weapon. What follows is an intense battle with the full team of the Crystal Gems coming together to repel two of their most formidable foes who intend to destroy the planet. It’s an exhilarating event to say the least and must be experienced to truly appreciate.

The only downside to the whole thing is Steven (once again) has to pull a new power out of nowhere to save the day. Come on! Yes, it has been revealed he is a diamond and not just a regular gem so having an extremely large powerset seems understandable but it’s becoming a bit much. There really wasn’t another way for him to get through to Blue and Yellow which wasn’t already established? Maybe he could have bubbled them and then talked to them in a dream like he tried to do with the cluster. It’s a small point of negativity but compared with the rest of the positive which came from the episode it is worth noting.

Reunited is one of those endings which makes it feel as if the series could just end here if it wasn’t already confirmed the show will get a sixth season (so stop with the “Steven Universe is ending” videos YouTube). It would be a less than satisfying ending compared to everything which has happened but still it could end. Luckily the show teases at the end their will be more coming and the Diamonds will finally get to see what their handy work did to the planet. Which will hopefully mean some of the broken gems will eventually be fixed.

Lewis Tan Discusses Talks With DC Films

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Lewis Tan could be in contention for another comic book role.

The Into The Badlands actor reveals he’s been talking with DC Films.

Nightwing

Recently, the actor took to Twitter, posting a pic of himself at the DC Office. Tan alludes to a “great meeting” with DC Entertainment. As he says, “My father started in this business with Tim Burton’s Batman, soon will be full circle.”

Tan’s comments are in reference to his father Philip Tan, who is an actor, director and stuntman. He did play one of Joker’s goons in the 1989 Batman movie.

https://twitter.com/TheLewisTan?lang=en

Fans are speculating that Tan could be playing Nightwing in the DCEU. In a Comic Book Resource interview, the actor sets the record straight about his dealings with DC.

“I’m not trading in my Marvel roots, because they started me,” Tan says. “But DC started my dad, so it would be nice to go over there and play around and find the right thing. So we’re looking for the right thing and there were a lot of different talks and Nightwing was one of those that were mentioned, so we’ll see.”

Tan is known for his role in Iron Fist‘s first season. He also plays Shatterstar in Deadpool 2. While the latter was a cameo, it did showcase his comedic chops and a love for the superhero genre.

Later, Tan took to Twitter to clarify things with fans. “I met with DC but not specifically for that project,” he says. “I love Nightwing and if the chance came I would love to show what I would do with the character.”

To date, the DCEU is still dealing with The Batman. If they recast Ben Affleck, director Matt Reeves will go with a younger actor as Bruce Wayne. Tan is 31 years old, so it might feel odd to have a Batman and Dick Grayson close in age.

Is the Force with FELICITY? Keri Russell in Talks to Join STAR WARS EPISODE IX

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Longtime J.J. Abrams collaborator and Felicity alum Keri Russell is in early talks to join Star Wars Episode IX according to Variety.

This news will no doubt bring with it an absolute onslaught of conjecture as to Russell’s role. The only substantial detail we have is that it “calls for action-heavy fight scenes.”

Russell has previously worked with Abrams on Felicity and Mission: Impossible III, his directorial debut.

Since then, Russell has worked other action-heavy roles like FX’s The Americans and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

The Star Wars franchise has always been light on “dark-side” casting, so smart speculation would point toward Russell joining the light. Perhaps as one of General Leia Organa’s allies mentioned in The Last Jedi?

In any case, Abrams will also be casting two more actors by the end of July. Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Adam Driver are all expected to return.

The yet-untitled Star Wars Episode IX is expected to release in 2019 and will see Abrams back at the helm, taking over Colin Trevorrow. Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Adam Driver are expected to return.

SACHA BARON COHEN Is Coming To Showtime In A New Comedic Series

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Variety is reporting that Sacha Baron Cohen is in talks with Showtime to launch a brand new comedic interview series.

For some, this news may come as a shock, but true fans knew it was only a matter of time before the man resurfaced with something indecent. Check out this video –

It also appears that some comedians might already be involved in the project. Check out what Sarah Silverman said on Instagram –

The question now becomes what Cohen’s show will look like once it airs. Some have speculated that the show might be just an extension of his infamous character from Da Ali G Show. That is hardly a plausible answer as his character Ali G is easily recognizable, and that would have already leaked out. We also know that it can’t be Borat either.

Sacha Baron Cohen

It does appear, Sacha Baron Cohen will be creating a whole new character which ties into President Trump and his now-defunct university. Showtime has even begun running promos for a show starting July 15th which sounds awfully like something Cohen would be part of. Check it out –

If indeed Cohen’s latest project makes light of the 45th president, it wouldn’t come as a great shock. An article in Deadline outlines how the comedian has had run-ins with President Trump in the past. On an episode of Da Ali G Show, Ali G interviews then real estate mogul Donald Trump and as you can see the discussion took a distinct turn –

A show like this would be perfect on Sundays as they already have Our Cartoon President on at 8 PM.

So what do you think Sacha Baron Cohen’s new show is going to be? Will it be as popular as his previous projects? Let us know what you think by leaving a comment below.

DOCTOR STRANGE #3 Review: Time After Time

Monkeys Fighting Robots

DOCTOR STRANGE #3 written by Mark Waid, art by Jesus Saiz, letters by Joe Sabino magically makes its way into our shelves this week as Waid conjures up a fabulous Infinity War tie-in accompanied by some awe-inspiring art by Saiz.

During their Intergalactic Planetary exploits,  Kanna sets up a super meet and greet with Doctor Strange and the Skrulls. Will they make it out in time? Let’s find out!

WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

DOCTOR STRANGE #3 SPOILERS TOO

Review Doctor Strange issue 3

Magical Mystery Tour

Waid does a fantastic job moving the story along by telling the reader several of Doctor Strange and Kanna’s mystical adventures, revealing some of the artifacts they found and showing us the Doc is coming back into his own again. He may not be at full strength BUT he’s getting there.

Review Doctor Strange issue 3

Kanna sets up a meeting with a Skrull wizard, which turns sideways fast. Doctor Strange realizes things are bad once he see’s the Super Skrull with the Time Gem! The good Doctor leaps into action with a surprise attack gaining the upper hand.

Using the Time Gem to go back in time by 30 seconds repeatedly, Doctor Strange creates an army of himself and takes down the Super Skrull.  The issue ends with the good Doctor and Kanna leaving the planet and Stephen erasing her memory of the entire encounter with the Super Skrull. Let the lies and secrets begin!

Review Doctor Strange issue 3

Unbelievable Team

Waid and Saiz are doing so well together. The art is purely fantastic, and the storytelling is top notch. Waid weaves an Infinity War tie-in right through his story with ease. Sometimes creative teams force a crossover or event into a book but Waid and Saiz fit this issue perfectly into their run, and it made total sense.

Review Doctor Strange issue 3

Let’s Talk Mystical ART-ifacts

Look at the teamwork from Waid and Saiz throughout the entire issue. These two layout dynamic action sequences that portray a clear and consist story. For example on the page above, very few word balloons are needed to guide you through the fight because this creative team takes you through the page bringing the scene to life.

Sabino does a great job with the lettering making it resemble a monologue by Doctor Strange, which looks like a piece from a journal entry. AND in the same panel, Saiz shows excellent detail depicting the magical ruins on Kanna’s shield.

What makes this page, as well as this entire issue, so amazing, is the creative team breathes life into the story and the characters. This team is great at visualizing a scene together and making it so realistic. Honestly, a fantastic job guys!

Review Doctor Strange issue 3

Bats is back Baby!

I was so pumped to see that Waid wrote Bats into his story. Donny Cates used him throughout his run, and I loved him! Waid didn’t have to use Bats, and the character could just be forgotten, and no one would think anything of it. But I did. I noticed. And I am so happy to see Bats return. But who do you think he’s talking to at the end of the issue?

Review Doctor Strange issue 3

Should you get this issue?

It was fun. It had humor. It had action. It had an Infinity Stone. It had a Super Skrull. And the art was freakin’ amazing. Of course, you should get this issue!

Should you add this to your pull list?

Well, I’ll answer this question by asking another; why isn’t it already in your pull list? This book may have started off weird with Doctor Strange in space but Waid and Saiz have put this story together nicely. And after listening to an interview with Mark Waid on the AMAZING Word Balloon Podcast (look it up on iTunes), some huge things are coming in issue 4 and 5. Things that will change the character forever. Don’t miss out! Add this to your pull!
