TRAILER: DOCTOR WHO Returns With A New Hype-Producing Trailer

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Doctor Who, one of the longest running science fiction shows ever made, returns with a new trailer that reveals more of the new Doctor, her new friends, and the wild new adventures they’ll be getting into. The series is set to premiere on BBC on October 7th, 2018.

About Doctor Who

Official Description: The further adventures in time and space of the alien adventurer known as the Doctor, a Time Lord/Lady who can change appearance and gender by regenerating when near death, and his/her human companions.

Jodie Whittaker is the star this time, taking on the role of the regenerating alien from Gallifrey. As noted already many times, Jodie is the first female Doctor in the history of the series. Joining her for the intergalactic fun are a host of new companions. Longtime Doctor Who showrunners Steven Moffat and Brian Minchin have moved on. Now, Chris Chibnall, Matt Stevens, and Sam Hoyle take the reigns to steer the Doctor into a whole new set of science fiction shenanigans.

Doctor Who features a cast that includes …

Bradley Walsh as Graham O’Brien
Tosin Cole as Ryan Sinclair
Mandip Gill as Yasmin Khan

The previous trailer began with the new Doctor saying “This is all new to me.” The new trailer shows plenty of new stuff, including this awesome spaceship (pictured above). The trailer seems to reveal an adventure that’s bigger than what we’ve seen before on the usually low-key sci-fi series.

This season marks the 11th (or 37th depending on how you want to count things) for the British science fiction series. There are a lot of unknowns here. First, the obvious, a female Doctor irked some fans, mostly the misogynistic, a-hole ones. Second, the show will air on Sundays this season instead of Saturdays which may or may not mess with viewership, if only for a little while since most TV is consumed on demand now and not necessarily at the moment of broadcasts. Third, a whole new team of writers and producers. The new creative team behind the scenes are the people who will ultimately steer this new season to new heights or to a dark place, like

Marvel’s DAREDEVIL Season 3 Teaser With Two Impressive Posters

Netflix released the first footage from Marvel’s Daredevil Season Three Thursday afternoon.

Embracing the darkness, enraged by the evil afoot, the video teases the return of Matt Murdock…the vigilante.

Following the events of The Defenders, Matt Murdock was worse for ware. He suffered severe injuries during the fight with Elektra and appeared to have died. That was until it we saw him alive and well in the care of Nuns.

Plot details surrounding Daredevil Season 3 have few and far between. It’s rumored to be following the iconic Born Again storyline, which sees Matt Murdock’s identity revealed to the world. This season will see the return of Vincent D’onofrio’s Wilson Fisk, who plays an integral role in Born Again.

Season 3 of Daredevil will mark the fourth Netflix Marvel series to release this year. Season 2 of both Jessica Jones and Luke Cage released earlier this year, with the second season of Iron Fist set to dropped earlier this month.

The third season hits Netflix on October 19.

Review: Paige Plots Her Comeback in WWE NXT TAKEOVER: INTO THE FIRE #1

Monkeys Fighting Robots

After a year of missing in-ring competition, Paige is setting her sights on making a big return to the WWE in BOOM! StudiosWWE NXT TAKEOVER: INTO THE FIRE #1.

STORY

Dennis Hopeless is back at it, giving us the next story of this NXT saga.  This time, we follow Paige as she plans a grand re-entrance into the WWE, following an almost year-long hiatus due to a neck injury and surgery.

She’s scoping out the talent at NXT; she knows that the female talent pool there is stellar.  Her sights are set on the undefeated Asuka and the ever-impressive Ember Moon.  After propositions to each are declined, she moves on to others.

She realizes that The IIconics are obnoxious and that she couldn’t stand to listen to them speak if she joined forces with them.  The Riott Squad are a little rough, even for Paige.  But then there’s her Tough Enough proteges Sonya Deville and Mandy Rose.  What an absolutely perfect arrangement.

ART

Hyeonjim Kim’s artwork in this issue is just plain fun.  The panels are action-packed, and Kim gives justice to the girls’ signature wrestling moves.  Ember Moon’s Total Eclipse is one of the greatest finishers in women’s wrestling, and every step of it was flawless across the page.

The colors chosen by Wesllei Manoel were cleverly used.  Asuka’s panels were given pink streaks, Ember Moon’s had a sunset red tone, and Paige’s flashback panels were muted, which made each part of the story stand out on its own.

As usual, Jim Campbell’s lettering moves the story masterfully.  I had the most fun with Paige’s notes while scoping out her possible teammates.

CONCLUSION

Paige is one of the pillars of the women’s revolution going on in the WWE right now.  She was a darling in NXT.  Now, she’s “baaaaaaaaack!!”  And she didn’t come alone.

Review: VENOM #6 – Cates And Stegman Go Full Todd McFarlane

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Venom #6 hits your local comic book store this week with Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman delivering 90s insanity with the flair of modern books.

Venom has to fight a giant symbiote dragon with a God inside of it. Eddie Brock does what any smart comic book character would do, and levels up. Venom combines with another symbiote and raids an armory of stolen S.H.I.E.L.D. weapons. Cates loves the 90s, and this book felt like an updated version of Todd McFarlane’s Spawn. (A black and white, shapeshifting vigilante carrying as many weapons as possible about to fight a giant demon? Are we talking about Venom or Spawn?) In the image above, both of them actually have the RAMBO knife too. Unfortunately, neither uses it, which is a bit disappointing.

What is interesting comparing the two images, though, is how far the art form has grown over the past 25 years. The textures in colors that Frank Martin can achieve and the detail that JP Mayer creates is mind-blowing. Look at Venom in the above image and then look at the background. Stegman, Mayer, and Martin must work 100 hours a week to keep this book on time.

Review VENOM #6: Cates And Stegman Go Full McFarlane On Us

The first story arc of Venom is comparable to Spawn only in a passing glance. In issue six, Cates has three characters floating around in Eddie Brock’s head and still keeps the book organized and focused. The is helped by Clayton Cowles’ lettering. With this issue being the end of the first story arc, Cates raises the stakes so high you felt like it was a series finale. If this were the final story of Venom, I would be ok with it because Cates left a few emotions unanswered, and that is what will resonate with you for the next few weeks. You feel sorry for Eddie, and a connection has been made between you and the character, but you understand the ending is the only way it could go.

Review VENOM #6: Cates And Stegman Go Full McFarlane On Us

Circling back to the art on the book. One of the elements that is so strong in Stegman’s work is how he builds the sound effects into his splash pages. The panel layout is layered so deep that when you build in the sound effects, the reader never gets pulled out of the moment. I can’t show you a specific page without spoiling the book, but trust me, buy this comic because the actions sequences are a thing of beauty. The series also holds up well to multiple reads as your eye catches more and more of the details.

Overall, Venom is one of the most exciting series coming from Marvel with Cates and Stegman delivering exceptional levels of talent.

Review: AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL #1

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 (Legacy #43) is out now, telling a beautiful and haunting lost story from the Alien Costume Saga.

The annual is written by Saladin Ahmed, drawn by Garry Brown, colored by Lee Loughridge, and lettered by Joe Caramagna. The cover is by ACO and Marcelo Maiolo, with a variant by Gabriele Dell’Otto.

Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1

Following the first Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars, Spider-Man returned to Earth sporting a slick, black costume – the alien symbiote that would become Venom. This untold story shows what the suit was up to while Spidey was sleeping, before Peter Parker got rid of it.

Ahmed does something brilliant with this tale and tells it all from the symbiote’s perspective. He shows you what the alien was thinking while out on its adventures, and it actually seems like it was trying to do good. It considers Peter a friend, and is trying to help him. This builds sympathy in the reader, which adds an emotional weight and makes certain moments (especially the ending) one hell of a gut punch.

It’s tragic in the same way that people feel bad for animals. The symbiote doesn’t know that’s it’s doing wrong. It’s only following its instincts and doing what it knows, so it doesn’t understand when its supposed friend reacts poorly.

amazing spider-man annual

Garry Brown has the perfect style to tell this story. It’s edgy and gives off strong horror vibes. (Anyone who reads Brown’s Babyteeth knows how well he does horror, and the Alien Costume Saga is, in many ways, a superhero horror story.) Loughridge’s colors compliment the style, creating a muted, dark environment. Plus, the two create intense action scenes in addition to the great creepy stuff. There’s a fight sequence in here that pops off the page, if you’ll pardon the cliche. It’s full of energy and movement, yet it still works well in an otherwise dark book.

So all in one comic, you have a horror story, a tragedy, and a superhero story with action, villains, and punching. Amazing Spider-Man Annual#1 is a great read, and it’s just making fans crave Ahmed’s Spider-Man book even more.

Review: SONIC THE HEDGEHOG #9 Does Not Slow Down

Monkeys Fighting Robots

With the second major story arc of Sonic The Hedgehog from IDW Comics in full swing, one can only hope the success of previous issues continues to carry over. Luckily for all the Sonic fans out there it delivers a lot in a single issue.

Summary

In an effort to save Angel Island from Neo Metal Sonic, the resistance fighters and Sonic have to stage a daring attack.

Writing

After the first arc which helped to established the new villain of the series, it’s impressive to see how far the storyline has progressed. Neo Metal Sonic is shown to not only have taken control of Knuckles’ home of Angel Island but also managed to neutralize the Master Emerald, the source of the island’s ability to float in the air. Got to admit, Neo Metal Sonic works fast.

Writer Ian Flynn is able to showcase the ability to juggle a large cast with relative ease. Each of the characters are allowed a moment in the story to showcase they aren’t simply there to fill a space. Also, despite a lot of dialogue dedicated to helping to set up the invasion strategy there is just as much action utilized for proper balance. All in all a very enjoyable issue of Sonic The Hedgehog.

Sonic The Hedgehog

Artwork

The artwork by Tracy Yardley is at its best in this issue. The two page splashes of both Angel island and the resistance fighters gathered together help to showcase the great attention to detail Yardley brings to the comic. It’s the kind of art which needs to be given an extra moment to appreciate all the fine details which went into its creation.

The color work by Matt Herms delivers some dynamite effects to the fight scenes. Of particular note is when Blaze showing off all the powers at her disposal. Thanks to the great job on the coloring, the intensity of the fire seems to radiate from the page.

The lettering by Shawn Lee continues to be a staple of this new series. Jokes and emotional moments come through perfectly thanks to his word placement. It also aids in delivering Sonic The Hedgehog’s personality in a very authentic fashion.

Conclusion

With a last panel cliffhanger which will definitely have fans waiting with anticipation for the next issue. The Sonic The Hedgehog series from IDW Comics continues to be a fantastic series. It’s almost safe to say a bad issue won’t come for a while. Just to be on the safe side, better just knock on some wood.

The Fate of the World is in One Man’s Hands in THE FREEZE

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The creative team of Dan Wickline and Phillip Sevy are seeking to make a cold December even colder with, The Freeze , an Image Comics and Top Cow offering.

The official premise of the series is painted perfectly on the Image page for the series, reading, ‘The entire human population is frozen by a mysterious global event … all except Ray, and only he has the power to unfreeze them. Now with the fate of the world in his hands, he must figure out what is going on, how to set things right again, and answer the question: does everyone deserve to be saved?’

The Freeze is a post-apocalyptic survival story where the biggest danger is man’s true nature,” said Wickline. “We strip the world down to one decent person and then give him the power to rebuild society from scratch, not knowing if those he awakens will benefit the new world or indulge their darkest inclinations. It’s an intriguing concept to explore as a writer, and Phillip is just hitting it out of the park with his art.”

The series will land on shelves on Dec. 5, 2018, and, if you’re lucky, will be able to catch a sneak peek at New York City Comic Con in October!

TRAILER: Terrifying Netflix Film ‘APOSTLE’ From THE RAID’S Gareth Evans

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Apostle is a new period horror film with torture devices and cults featuring a stellar cast and it’s all on display in this intense new trailer. The film comes from Gareth Evans, the director behind The Raid and Raid 2 who looks poised to take his already spectacular skillset to the next level. After its world premiere at Fantastic Fest, Apostle will release on October 12, 2018, on Netflix.

About Apostle

Official Description: A man attempts to rescue his sister who’s been kidnapped by a religious cult.

Apostle presents a rabidly dark and disturbing island where a cult lives in isolation. Well, not exactly. The cult sometimes goes out to snag a person or two. Netflix understands how essential subscribers are and so does this collective of crazies. Dan Stevens of Downtown Abby fame stars as Thomas Richardson; his missing sister is played by the young and talented Lucy Boynton (Murder on the Orient Express, Bohemian Rhapsody). Acclaimed actor Michael Sheen (Underworld) also stars and looks poised to provide some epic sermons.

The trailer for Apostle is expertly crafted. There’s so much tension and the set up with the torture device (pictured above) is excellent. The pause and return to the pace the trailer moves at provides a great shock, a sort of jump scare that strikes at the core when all these elements come together.

It’s not often that movies take advantage of centuries-old torture devices, and Apostle looks to fill that void. Additionally, the film doesn’t seem to be a complete departure from director Evans’ roots as there do appear to be some kinetic fight sequences.
