‘Voltron: Legendary Defender’ Season 4 Delivers Deep Drama And Hilarious Comedy

Monkeys Fighting Robots

MINOR SPOILERS FOR Voltron: Legendary Defender Season 1-4

After the more predictable developments from the previous season of Voltron: Legendary Defender, fans were wondering if the show had hit its peak. Luckily, season four returned with a vengeance and reminded everyone of the reason why they fell in love with this series in the first place. Let’s explore this Netflix exclusive a bit deeper.

Voltron

Writing

The season opens by deciding to take the characters in a much different direction than anyone ever believed. It is revealed Keith has become more focused on working with the Blade of Mamora than with the Voltron Paladins. This results in him becoming distant from his friends which leads to a new development. This is a departure from what was previously expected as it was taught after the event of the previous season Keith was going to focus more on his in new role of leader of the Voltron team and stop being a loner.

As these events play out, the series makes sure to pull out on the stops on making sure the audience feels something. The show finds a way to showcase a lot of emotional moments while the same time getting a lot of zany humor when you least expect it. As the first two episodes go deep with the drama, episodes three and four find a way to be incredible entertaining thanks to its comedy. Just when you think you know what is going to come next, the show keeps you guessing.

Voltron

Artwork

The animation for this season is particularly of note. A lot of attention was paid to the color work to make sure good dramatic elements were achieved.. Take the episode Reunion as an example. This episode was of particular note as Pidge continues to search for her brother and a great deal of time was paid to the color working to showcase the sadness unfolding. As Pidge continues the search and it appears like the search is going south, the scene cuts back to the robot Lion as the rain starts to poor. As lighting dances behind it and the robot looks sad and remorseful to indicate dread and misery on the horizon. Impressive work to say the least.

Voltron

Music

The music continues to help to shape the right reactions of the show. The background songs are so good, it’s becoming more and more apparent the soundtrack needs to be released in the future. The homage to the Power Rangers in the episode The Voltron show was noticed and much appreciated.

Voltron

Conclusion

The fourth season of Voltron continues to accelerate the story while at the same time giving plenty of room for growth with characters and humor which never gets old. As long as this level of quality keeps up in the presentation the fans have no worries about enjoying the contained adventures of the paladins of Voltron. Now begins the process of waiting for the next season to come out. Why must they torture us so?

‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’ DVD Review: These Features Rock

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is rife with flaws, but it seems those are addressed in the DVD release. The picture and sound are the typical superior quality we’ve grown to expect from a Disney release. It is the features that put this release over the top. Here is what you can expect.

A Return To The Sea

This feature provides interesting commentary about what brought Orlando Bloom and Geoffrey Rush back to the franchise.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Telling Tales: A Sit-down with Brenton and Kaya

This feature focuses on the “new blood” introduced into this film. Brenton Thwaites and Kaya Scodelario detail what it was like on set and how nervous they were meeting Johnny Depp.

The Matador & The Bull: Secrets of Salazar and Silent Mary

Javier Bardem breaks down his method for bringing his character, Salazar, to life. He goes into detail about how much he’s a fan of the franchise as well (his wife was in one of the previous films). We also get an extensive look at the makeup process he went through.

First Mate Confidential

Kevin McNally goes into detail about playing Captain Jack’s first mate in all of these films. Mcnally goes into how he doesn’t crave the spotlight but does enjoy the consistent work.

Deconstructing the Ghost Sharks

This was the only feature that got into some of the special effects. This short detailed how they created the Ghost Shark sequences.

Overall

Disney has taken a film that was undoubtedly lifeless and managed to make it reasonably enjoyable. If the final product is lackluster, then dazzle me with your extra features. While no one should have wasted their money seeing this release in theaters, the extras make it more than worth your time.

‘A Centaur’s Life’ Stands Out By Addressing Racism

Monkeys Fighting Robots

A Centaurs Life offers an interesting example of the idea of what you are going to get when you start a show and what actually plays out. In this case you signed up because it looks like it’ll be a monster girl series with a bunch of cute characters enjoying their High School lives. It turns out there is a lot more under the surface which helps the series to benefit. This allows the series to become much more than the sum of its parts.

A centaur's life

Writing

The story focuses around Himeno who everyone calls “Hime” (princess) because she’s so cute and ladylike. Along with her two friends Nozomi and Kyouko, the three of them go about their High School adventures. This concept would allow for a standard slice of life series but the world which is presented makes the series standout.

The underlying factor is the world is basically held together by a thin structure. The centaurs, demons, angels, merfolk, and snake people of the arctic are all on the verge of a devastating race war and secret organizations are the only thing keeping the world from devolving into chaos. Unlike shows like Monster Musume where everyone is perfectly capable of getting along and there seems to be no major internal tensions, A Centaur Life shows varying ways of portraying how society can pull strings behind the scenes. Propaganda exists in the form of a magical girl series talking about how its best to go with the group ideal. Flashbacks show scenes of World War II with the different species being place in internment camps. When was the last time an anime really tried to portray such intensity in one episode and excessive cuteness in the next?

A Centaur's life

Animation

The visual design of this series helps to mask the hidden intensity which allows this series to stand out. The delicate and charming appearance of the monster girls puts the audience into a sense of security. The intriguing details of the different types of creatures, how they would go about their daily lives and the adaptations which would have to be made.

A Centaur's Life

Music

The music is interesting and uplifting. The opening song, Oshiete Darwin by Purely Monster starts sugary and pop like but twisted into an action ballad. Meanwhile the ending, “Edelweiss” by Asaka showcases gentleness and calm with the beauty of a flower. Along with the insertion songs, this is one fans of anime music will be enjoying for a while.

A Centaur's Life

Conclusion

If you are looking for a series with a mixture of humor but leaves you with some deep thoughts to ponder on this is the series for you. A Centaur’s Life is soft when it needs to be and harsh when you least suspect it. This series easily found a way to become one of the best anime of the year.

A Centaur’s Life is streaming on Crunchyroll.

‘New Mutants’ Is The Beginning Of A Unique Trilogy Says Director

Monkeys Fighting Robots

20th Century Fox made a big splash when it released the first official trailer for Josh Boone’s The New Mutants earlier this week. While the trailer didn’t reveal much about the narrative of the film, it did tease an extremely dark tone, which is very much influenced by the horror genre.

More – ‘The New Mutants’ Trailer Teases A Dark Turn For The X-Men Franchise

In a recent interview with IGN, Boone revealed that The New Mutants will kickstart a trilogy of movies, with each film exploring a unique corner of the horror genre.

“We brought it to FOX as a trilogy of films, really all based on that long run by Sienkiewicz, and kind of incorporates some stuff from later issues in the ’80s. These are all going to be horror movies, and they’re all be their own distinct kind of horror movies. This is certainly the ‘rubber-reality’ supernatural horror movie. The next one will be a completely different kind of horror movie. Our take was just go examine the horror genre through comic book movies and make each one its own distinct sort of horror film. Drawing from the big events that we love in the comics.”

Ben Affleck Explains What Joss Whedon Brings To ‘Justice League’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

With just a few weeks until Justice League lands in theatres, fans are still questioning how much of the film has changed since Joss Whedon took over from Zack Snyder. Previous reports have stated that Whedon is simply adding more connective tissue between action scenes, giving us more development and dialogue for the characters.

More – 5 Things Fans Of The Flash Want To See In ‘Justice League’

In a recent interview with SFX Magazine, Ben Affleck explained what Joss Whedon has brought to Justice League and describes the benefits of having The Avengers director in the captain’s chair.

“Joss just brought to the movie what good directors bring, which is good taste. A sense of what’s gonna work in the story and what isn’t. An instinct for realism and for finding the humanity in the characters and the humanity in the conflict, then making it accessible and relevant. I think that’s one of the things he did so well with Avengers, frankly. He really defined the tone, and it felt like a lot of the movies after that sort of fell into that tone that he created. It was a very tricky dance where you have all these people who can do all these fantastic things that’s completely absurd on the face of it, and yet, a good storyteller like Joss brings us in, makes us identify with them, makes them seem real, and makes it interesting. A lot of guys know the comic books, a lot of people have that knowledge base. What Joss really has is talent.”

Affleck then went on to give us a better idea of what Joss Whedon has done with Justice League, specifically talking about Whedon’s skill as a director and his ability to create interesting and entertaining characters.

“I wish I had the gift that he has for identifying what’s the most compelling human drama in the context of superhero conflict. But he has a very sharp mind for it. He knows exactly what he wants, almost with a surgeon’s kind of precision. He focuses in, beat by beat, on how he’s telling the story, exactly where he’ll be editorially. What the tenor of delivery of a line should be like. He gives you comfort because you feel like he has a very clear idea of what he wants, what he expects and, most importantly, what he thinks will work.”

There’s an excellent chance that we will never find out how much of Justice League was changed by Joss Whedon, but Affleck’s comments ensure that fans understand that the film is in safe hands, with a director that knows what he’s doing.

Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

Psychological Thriller Game ‘Past Cure’ To Launch February 2018

Monkeys Fighting Robots

A psychological thriller game is coming to Playstation in 2018.  Developers Phantom Studio 8 gives us an inside look and backstory of the game.

Animation Artist for the company Nick Mallinder had this to say,

“Past Cure tells the story of Ian, a tormented man desperate to rediscover his lost identity. A highly cinematic experience, Past Cure offers an enigmatic plot as the story twists between dreams and reality leaving you guessing throughout. Dark dream sequences intertwine with a gritty but realistic world, and gameplay threads between stealth, action, survival and puzzle. The characters that Ian encounters will have a notable impact on both gameplay and your surroundings.

Ian’s main drive in the story is to find the people who experimented on him to try and unlock the mind’s true potential and inadvertently cursed him with supernatural abilities. But to survive long enough to get to the truth, he needs to use those powers.

So aside from using his military experience for weapon handling and close quarters combat, Ian also has an unnatural edge over his enemies. He can speed up his perceptions so events play out in slow motion, letting him shoot multiple targets before they can react, with partial auto aim and lock support giving him a supernatural precision. This power is also vital to stealth and evasion, letting him sneak through patrolling enemies. His Astral projection power on the other hand is a mix of outer body experience and telekinesis.”

Edwina Findley Lands Recurring Role On “Black Lightning”

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The Fear The Walking Dead and If Loving You Is Wrong actress has just landed a recurring role on the upcoming CW series Black Lightning.

Findley will play Tori, the younger sister of Tobias Whales.  Though Black Lightning is based on the DC Comics, it will be a stand alone and not be apart of Arrowverse.  For fans of the current DC shows on CW it means no crossovers.

Black Lightning is set to premiere sometime in 2018 and stars Cress Williams as Jefferson Pierce/Black Lightning. After letting go of his vigilante ways, his daughter Jennifer is determined to bring justice to their city.  When she’s recruited by a local gang, he decides to dig in his closet and put on his suit once again.

Deadline tells us, Black Lightning reunites Findley with Berlanti. She did an arc on Brothers and Sisters, which Berlanti executive produced. Her other credits include recurring roles on David Simon’s HBO series The Wire and Treme, as well as Veep. She most recently appeared on Fox limited series Shots Fired and also stars in indie film Free in Deed, which won Best Film in the Horizon’s category at the Venice Film Festival. Findley is repped by APA and Silver Lining Entertainment.

“Edwina is a fantastic talent, and I am so excited she is joining us,” said showrunner and executive producer Salim Akil.

Findley will appear in the Season 3 finale of Fear the Walking Dead which airs Sunday night at 9 pm ET on AMC.
