Hilary Swank Will Headline Sci-Fi Thriller ‘I Am Mother’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Hilary Swank’s career is one of the more curious cases in Hollywood. On all sides of two deserving Oscar wins for Boys Don’t Cry and Million Dollar Baby, Swank has made some truly awful movies in all genres. Perhaps I Am Mother, the new sci-fi thriller she’s signed on to headline for first-time director Grant Sputore.

Here is a breakdown of the story from the Variety report:

[Clara] Rugaard portrays the first of a new generation of humans raised by “Mother” – a kindly robot designed to repopulate the earth following the extinction of mankind. But their unique bond is threatened when a blood-drenched woman (played by Swank) inexplicably arrives, calling into question everything she’s been told about the outside world.

The premise is interesting enough, but it all comes down to execution. Hilary Swank has starred in some sci-fi before and things didn’t turn out all that well. Remember The Core? Yeah, me neither. Swank has tried her hand at romantic comedy, sci-fi, horror, action, biopics, and none of them have managed to even come close to the work she did in her two Oscar-Winning roles.

Michael Lloyd Green’s screenplay for I Am Mother was on the infamous Hollywood blacklist last year, and is currently being filmed in Australia. Stay tuned for updates.

Check Out This Powerful ‘Black Panther’ Poster

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Along with the new trailer that was released online, Marvel has unveiled a brand new poster for the fast-approaching Black Panther.

Black Panther Poster

Featuring Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa at the top with the villainous Erik Killmonger to his side, the piece of visual marketing really shows just how high-tech Wakanda is. Although we got a hint of it in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, the famous fictional country will be shown off heavily in the forthcoming solo film.

“After the events of Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War, King T’Challa returns home to the reclusive, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to serve as his country’s new leader. However, T’Challa soon finds that he is challenged for the throne from factions within his own country. When two foes conspire to destroy Wakanda, the hero known as Black Panther must team up with C.I.A. agent Everett K. Ross and members of the Dora Milaje, Wakanadan special forces, to prevent Wakanda from being dragged into a world war.”

Black Panther releases on February 16, 2018. What do you think of the new trailer and poster? Start a conversation in the comments below.

In Today’s Unlikeliest News, Guillermo del Toro is Making a Michael Mann Documentary

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Guillermo del Toro, whose fantastical films of monsters and robots and comic-book heroes, is making a documentary about Michael Mann, a precision filmmaker whose work – often of the crime thriller variety – exists in the real world, or some version thereof.

This is an odd combination, but Cannes spokesperson Thierry Fremaux brought up this news at the Lumière Film Festival, where he was presenting the director’s cut of Mann’s Heat. Del Toro has’t confirmed this, nor has Michael Mann, but it seems like a weird tidbit to throw out at a film festival if something isn’t in the works.

Nothing about the filmography of Guillermo del Toro and Michael Mann coincide, at least in front of the camera. Perhaps that is a great perspective for a documentary about the legend, who is currently trying to get a biopic of Enzo Ferrari up and running. The project has stopped and started a few times, with Hugh Jackman most recently attached after Christian Bale bowed out of the project.

Meanwhile, Del Toro has his romantic monster/fantasy The Shape of Water hitting theaters this December, just in time for a hopeful awards-season push. Stay tuned for any and all updates on this documentary, which sounds absolutely delightful for cinephiles everywhere.

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The fastest man alive looks better than ever in Justice League! Warner Bros. and DC Films just released a new Justice League featurette, with Ezra Miller, who portrays The Flash, announcing that we have officially entered Flash Week.

Ben Affleck Explains What Joss Whedon Brings To ‘Justice League’

The featurette doesn’t offer much new footage, but the small scenes that are included give us an amazing new look at how The Flash runs and what his superspeed looks like on the big screen.

Watch the featurette below:

Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s (Henry Cavill) selfless act, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) enlists newfound ally Diana Prince to face an even greater threat. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to recruit a team to stand against this newly awakened enemy. Despite the formation of an unprecedented league of heroes — Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and the Flash — it may be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

‘Godless’ Trailer: Jeff Daniels Heads Out West For Netflix

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Netflix has a new limited Western series, Godless, on the horizon. This is reason to rejoice inane of itself. Throw Jeff Daniels into the mix and, well, you have my full, unadulterated attention.

Here is a quick trailer for Godless, which starts off slowly and builds to a few thrilling shots at the end. Oh, and there’s a truly unnerving moment with a baby in here, all in the span of a minute! Check it out:

Notorious criminal Frank Griffin (Jeff Daniels) and his gang of outlaws are on a mission of revenge against Roy Goode (Jack O’Connell), a son-like protégé who betrayed the brotherhood. While on the run, Roy seeks refuge with hardened widower Alice Fletcher (Michelle Dockery), an outcast herself, in a worn-down, isolated mining town of La Belle, NM — governed mainly by women. When word reaches La Belle that Griffin is headed their way, the town bands together to defend against the murderous gang in a lawless western frontier.

Yeah so that scene with the baby and the rattlesnake had me leaning back from my computer.

Aside from Daniels, Godless has a fantastic supporting cast that includes the aforementioned JackO’Connell and Michelle Dockery the underrated Scoot McNairy, Sam Waterston, and Kim Coates. Oh, and did we mention Steven Soderberghis executive producer? Well, it is, and it’s written and directed by Logan scribe Scott Frank.

It’s Netflix’s first limited series and will drop on November 22, so plan accordingly Western fans.

3. Arrow, “Fallout” (Oct 12th)

Arrow’s season premiere is the most obnoxious soap-opera-y episodes of the the week. All the underwater arrow shots & cool new Wild Dog costumes can’t distract from the bland story tropes. Even the twist of revealing Ollie’s identity to the public doesn’t distract from his boring attempts to reconnect with his son. Sticking Thea in a coma is one of the oldest tricks in the TV drama books. Same with Quentin relapsing because he killed his alternate reality… okay, that one’s less basic. The side plot of Dinah & Diggle’s secrets don’t pack nearly enough punch to warrant the screen time they get. And are we really supposed to believe Deathstroke’s walking free as Oliver’s BFF? Maybe if Doctor Faust was less obnoxious, or if the villain’s plan was simpler to follow, it’d be a cool episode. All that this episode delivers is an Arrow-Deathstroke Dream Daddy shipper’s delight that would put Supercorp to shame.

SCORE:  6/10 Comas

WEEKLY WIN TALLY:

The Flash: 1 Week

Supergirl: 0 Weeks

Arrow: 0 Weeks

What show did you think won the week? Does Legends of Tomorrow take your vote? Do you think A.o.S. or Gotham outshines all the CW shows? Let us know in the comments below!

‘Sherlock Frankenstein And The Legion Of Evil’ Fleshes Out The World Of ‘Black Hammer’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Sherlock Frankenstein And The Legion Of Evil arrives this week to further populate and explore the world that Black Hammer takes place in. Jeff Lemire enlists artist David Rubin to help him dive deeper down into the shadows of this strange universe in it’s first spin-off series.

Sherlock Frankenstein 1 cvr

Lucy Weber, daughter of Black Hammer, is the only one who’s convinced her superhero father isn’t dead. She’s determined to find him and believes the key to doing so is one of his oldest enemies, Sherlock Frankenstein. Lucy begins her search at the Spiral Asylum For The Criminally Insane seeking clues.

The world of Black Hammer is a genuinely intoxicating one, now is the perfect time to strike with a spin-off story. Anyone reading the main series will be pleased to explore further, past the limits of the town our main cast of heroes are restrained to.

Sherlock Frankenstein gives readers a look into the other side of this superhero world, examining the villains of Spiral City. This comic does a splendid job in showcasing a massive roster of evil-doers that are as fascinating as the cast of the main book.

Black Hammer has no shortage of amazing character names, and Sherlock Frankenstein is no different. From Cthu-lou to Concretestador, every new character has the potential to be your new favorite. This book is filled to the brim with fantastic new characters, each one a unique and stunning creation.

There’s a similarity in style and atmosphere to Hellboy in this investigation of Black Hammer rogues. It’s a spooky and exciting sci-fi world with a rich history, every glimpse we get into the past does some heavy lifting in making this universe feel like it’s been around for much longer than we’ve been reading it.

One thing is for sure, the deeper we get into Black Hammer lore, the more enthralled by this world we become. Every little peak deeper into the mythos we get, the more we want. Jeff Lemire is a master-crafter, in this series his talents are fully on display.

Sherlock Frankenstein is a home-run, hopefully we can expect more spin-offs like this in the future. If you’re a Black Hammer fan, don’t miss this book.
