WWE FASTLANE Steers Us Toward WRESTLEMANIA

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Fastlane, the final WWE pay-per-view event before next month’s Wrestlemania, left us with a clearer understanding of the card for the “The Greatest Spectacle in Sports Entertainment.”

As usual, the kickoff show match was pretty ho-hum.  Breezango (Tyler Breeze and Fandango) teamed with Tye Dillinger to defeat Chad Gable, Shelton Benjamin, and Mojo Rawley. The match was pretty pointless, and it proved why it was only a kickoff show match.

What are the chances that the match that had the biggest crowd reactions would fall on Rusev Day?! The match between the Bulgarian Brute and Royal Rumble winner Shinsuke Nakamura had the crowd pumped, as these two seem to have the WWE Universe in the palms of their hands. Anything these two would have done would have been great, and the match was pure magic.

Rusev vs Nakamura

The United States Championship was up for grabs, and Randy Orton was focused on this match. Bobby Roode did a “glorious” job defending his title, but it proved to not be enough to keep the Viper from striking. With similar physiques and skill sets, these two made their match look like a choreographed dance. With Orton’s win, he joins the Grand Slam Champion club, a title that only 18 men have held in the WWE.

A Twitter war came to a head with the Women’s Tag match between Carmella and Natalya versus Naomi and Becky Lynch. The match itself was short, which is disappointing considering the amount of talent in the ring. And still, Carmella’s carrying around that Money In The Bank case… How much longer until she cashes that thing in?

We’ve seen The New Day and the Usos battle each other so many times before, but something seemed different during this Smackdown Tag Team title match.  The New Day used their “speed line-up” with Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods against the twins Jimmy and Jey. Xavier Woods came out fierce, and both his words and actions emulated this. This is the best he’s performed, and he proved that no one should underestimate his talent and intensity. There were great acrobatics and fun, until… The Bludgeon Brothers (Luke Harper and Erick Rowan) rolled through the match and destroyed all, just like their former Wyatt brother Braun Strowman does. After the match of his life, Xavier Woods suffered a thoracic spine injury during the attack, and his future is unknown.

The Smackdown Women’s Title match was the most predictable of the night, securing the title with Charlotte Flair with a defeat over Ruby Riott. While Riott isn’t bad in the ring, she just isn’t ready to carry the title into Wrestlemania. With another predicted rumor, Asuka showed up after the match to declare her intentions for Wrestlemania. This privilege was awarded by winning the first ever Women’s Royal Rumble in January, and everyone had assumed she’d go after Alexa Bliss‘s RAW Women’s Title.

The 6-Pack Challenge for the WWE Championship was a rousing bout to feature the best of the Smackdown card, but a win by anyone other than AJ Styles would have caused a riot. The dream main event match is now set with AJ Styles versus Shinsuke Nakamura, and John Cena still doesn’t have a match at Wrestlemania. Smackdown Live Commissioner Shane McMahon provoked the feud between Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn. And Baron Corbin and Dolph Ziggler were made to look like unnecessary stooges.

The road to Wrestlemania is finally being paved, and the card is coming together. What are you most looking forward to at “The Show of Shows?”

PUERTO RICO STRONG Is A Must Read Of The Human Spirit

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Puerto Rico Strong, an anthology by Lion Forge, is a book with a mission. Though many comics are released with the goal to entertain or to inform, Puerto Rico Strong hopes to do both by focusing on the recent events which devastated an entire country.

Summary

This book is a collection of stories showing the pride and strength of the people of Puerto Rico. It showcases their diversity and the honored traditions of the culture. All profits from sales of the anthology will help the people of Puerto Rico with relief and recovery efforts.

Writing

Every story told in this book is unique. Each represents not only the voice of Puerto Rico and the strength of the Latinx people, but the power of the indomitable human spirit. It focuses on the rich heritage, the history of repelling discourse, and the unique perspective only the Puerto Rican people can offer. Writers such as Aldo Alvarez, Jeff Gomez, and Adam Lance Garcia all help to bring this story to life. Their efforts result in a deep and enriching experience everyone needs to check out.

Puerto Rico Strong

Artwork

A cavalcade of artists contributed to this project. Each bring a unique style to the project. Water colors, splash pages, and sequential stories are all employed to help to communicate the soul behind the community. Artists such as Jules Rivera, Kristen Van Dam, and Jamie Jones all lend their talent to this collection. Some like Ally Shwed, Tom Beland, and Rosa Colon contributed both art and story to the piece.

Conclusion

This review will not end with any type of numerical rating. Much like Love is Love, this book’s purpose is to raise money for victims and tell a story which was swept aside after 15 minutes on Mainstream Media and talk of thoughts and prayers on social network platforms. Recovery is not as quick as many would like it to believe. It takes time, patience, and fortitude which many do not possess. Still if this anthology represents merely a fraction of the strength held by the people of Puerto Rico, then they will succeed in rebuilding their home.

Review: DRY COUNTY #1 Is A Unique Blend Of ‘Indie’ and Crime Comics

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Dry County #1, the latest Image Comics title by Rich Tomasso, blends the autobiographical nature of indie comics with classic noir/crime elements to give the reader something unique and relatable. Dry County

Dry County #1
Written, Drawn, Colored and Lettered by: Rich Tomasso
Published by: Image Comics

Lou Rossi is a lonely young Generation Xer and newspaper cartoonist who plays amateur detective in order to find a missing woman he’s recently fallen hard for in late 1980’s Miami, Florida. Dry County

Writing

Dry County #1 doesn’t begin as a noir/crime story, but it definitely introduces those elements throughout, and fully embraces them by the end of the issue. At first, it reads more like the kind of autobiographical comics you would get from someone like Adrian Tomine or Daniel Clowes. And that is one of its greatest strengths. Protagonist Lou Rossi is a very relatable lead. His feelings of loneliness are something anyone who has lived a somewhat isolated life in a big city has felt. Dry CountyAnd Tomasso’s trick of using Lou’s journal entries (complete with legal-pad yellow line-paged backgrounds) adds another layer if identifiability on top.  These are the elements that give it that ‘indie comics’ feel, and are what draws you in. Tomasso himself was a newspaper cartoonist (like Lou Rossi is in the book) and uses that as a good detail as well.

But Tomasso is a crafty creator, and the subtle introduction of noir elements (the ‘femme fatale’, the roguish sidekick/friend, the city almost as much a character as a setting) are worked in slowly but masterfully. By the last page, you are left with a perfectly blended comic book cocktail that packs the punch of a stiff drink.

Art

Tomasso is an excellent cartoonist. His line work is thick and falls somewhere in between comic strips and comic books. Body language plays a huge role too; movements and expressions get as much across as the text and word balloons. He also plays with the layout and creates some really great pages that include circular panels and had written ‘journal’ pages.Dry County

The coloring stands out, using a bright palette of mostly primary colors to create the very recognizable atmosphere of Miami.  A couple of scenes in clubs are perfect examples (you can see one below). Dry County

And if you are a fan of easter eggs and 80s pop culture references, you’ll see era-appropriate things like MTV’s 120 Minutes playing on TV, a Primus poster on a wall, or a character wearing a Social Distortion t-shirt. These things are drawn as PART of the story though and don’t take away or distract from the tale itself.

The lettering and word balloons are also quite good; font is clean and sharp without feeling like a computer typeface and word balloons vary in shape and size in order to convey tone and sound level.

Conclusion

Dry County #1 is unique and refreshing. It has the appeal of an indie comic and the draw, intrigue, and mystery of a crime/detective story. Comics is a medium were genres can be blended and mixed up to create new and interesting flavors and reactions. Make sure you order this book and your local comic shop and keep the tab open! Dry County

Review: BETROTHED #1 – A Wild Ride Begins

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Betrothed #1 from AfterShock is a rollercoaster ride with no end. The book starts off with an intriguing concept, and then it quickly picks up speed. Do we know where we are going? Absolutely not, but it’s the journey that’s important, not the destination.

About Betrothed #1:

Welcome to the World of Betrothed! Kieron and Tamara are both seniors at the same high school. They’ve never paid much attention to each other, even though they are the only kids at school who are orphans. On the eve of their eighteenth birthdays, they discover a lifelong secret: in a dimension far away, they are each the leader of an army that is at war with one another…and what’s more, when they turn eighteen, they’re to be Betrothed or Fight to the Death!

The book is written by Sean Lewis, with art by Steve Uy, and letters by Simon Bowland. Juan Doe worked on the variant cover. Betrothed #1 hits your local comic book store on March 14.

The opening page of the issue is eye-catching and forces you to read further. The tone and color palette of the book is reminiscent of the Jim Shooter days at Valiant Comics. Lewis quickly explains three sides to the story, gives every reader a person to root for, and leaves you with a cliffhanger. These are all essential elements of a first issue. The duality of the narrative is what makes the book special. With the thoughts of Kieron and Tamara, the book speeds up and pulls the reader across the emotional spectrum.

It’s a personal preference, but Uy’s Robotech-esque look to certain characters didn’t seem to fit the story. Give Kieron a haircut and 90% of the issue’s problems will be fixed. There are six pages of waterfall where the art and color come together and really showcase Uy’s talent. The darker backgrounds give Uy’s ink strokes a thicker look. Issue two looks to be a battle and will expand Uy’s artistic reach.

With the thoughts of two main characters running around on the page, Bowland handled the letters well and did not distract from the story.

Overall, Betrothed #1 is a very compelling story that warrants a read.

Yi Soon Shin: War Is Hell But So Is Love And They Collide In The Latest Chapter

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The next chapter in Yi Soon Shin, the historical action comic about war adds love to the mix. At the end of the previous episode, Yi Soon leads his people through a brutal battle against Japanese forces at the Battle of Sacheon. Chapter three provided plenty of action, but the narrative is starting to bog down. In chapter four, Yi Soon flips the script and offers a little action but a lot more story development … sort of.

Writing: Ornie Kompan
Art: Giovanni Timpano
Colors: Adriana De Los Santos
Letters: Joel Saavedra
Co-Writer/Editor: David Anthony Kraft

“I will rest when the Japanese are driven out of our country.”
– Yi Shin Soon

WRITING

Chapter three ended with the reveal of Jin, a war survivor, and courtesan. However, we don’t understand Jin’s purpose until later on in this part of the story. Instead, we spend some time with the survivors of the Japanese navy. They’re dejected, but traitor Baron Seo gives them a little inspiration and backup. The mission now is to kill Shin in a surprise attack. Meanwhile, Shin and the Koreans are celebrating an epic victory. But Shin wants none of it. Yi plans to attack again soon. However, personal conflicts arise.

As it turns out, Jin is the arm candy for Admiral Won much to the chagrin of Lieutenant Song who is also Shin’s closest friend. In a drunken stupor, Song tries to take Jin from Won, insulting his superior. The consequences of his actions force Shin to choose between friendship and honor. The dilemma is interesting, the setup is well-done, but the payoff feels like another excuse for some gloriously gory artwork or for Shin to have a “tough choice” to make.

ART

The narrative for Yi Soon Shin is questionable. It’s very matter-of-fact and continues to introduce new characters 100+ pages in. The artwork of the book is its strength. Timpano and De Lost Santos do some wonderful work. Whether it’s a gory panel, an explosive one, or a touching one, the artwork tells the story beautifully. The angles for many panels feel very cinematic as the war rages on and the stakes get higher. But the style of the book, the number of similarly-dressed characters, and the narrative shifting away from Shin makes it hard to appreciate their work more.

“No balls, no glory“ – Baron Seo

CONCLUSION

Yi Soon Shin is still feeling like it’s walking through mud. Following five, six, seven characters and their tidbits of interpersonal detail feel a bit convoluted. Though the title of the book is Yi Soon Shin, we spend so little time with him so often. And the time we spend with Yi often ends up being short, uninteresting bits. The war is wonderful to watch, but the story received a much-needed narrative boost from chapter four. However, the least interesting character is turning out to be Yi Soon Shin.

Review: ISOLA – A Beautiful Silent Film Of Gorgeous Artwork

Monkeys Fighting Robots

ISOLA from Image Comics hits your local comic book store on April 4, and you should be excited for Brenden Fletcher and Karl Kerschl’s work, as they have created a fascinating new world.

About ISOLA #1:
The captain of the Royal Guard has fled the capital city with the Queen of Maar, who is suffering under the effects of an evil spell. Captain Rook’s only hope of returning Queen Olwyn to her throne, and saving the kingdom from impending war, lies on an island half a world away—a place known in myth as Isola, land of the dead.

The book is written by Brenden Fletcher, with art by Karl Kerschl, colors by Msassyk, and lettered by Aditya Bidikar.

Kerschl’s art is amazing with Msassyk’s colors. ISOLA has the feel of Lord of the Rings, the look of Akira, and the color palette of Don Bluth’s Dragon’s Lair. The tiger eyes of Queen of Maar are mesmerizing, and the fact that she can’t talk gives the book weight and silence. The movement and the action of the panels are top-notch. The first issue is filled with arrows and Kerschl’s art makes you jump out of the way of getting shot. ISOLA is one of the most gorgeous books of 2018. Msassyk’s colors build up to the action and yet are so relaxing, making this a pleasant read as you get caught staring at each panel.

ISOLA is one of the best-looking books of 2018.

Bidikar’s letters are great as well. He adds to the mystical world as opposed to distracting. The sound effects Bidikar uses in the book are original and fit well.

Fletcher does a decent job introducing the world and the main characters involved, while also leaving out a vast amount of information to peak the reader’s curiosity. The first issue is like looking through a keyhole into a room. When and where Fletcher opens up the door will be interesting for the reader. The only downside of the issue one is the lack of a cliffhanger as you approach the last page. You only get one shot to grab the reader; you should never hold back on a first issue as you might never get a chance on a second.

Overall, Kerschl’s art leads the way as Fletcher slowly reveals the world. Issue one is a must read, but issue two really needs to dig its claws into the reader.

‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald’ Trailer Tease Released

Monkeys Fighting Robots

With Tomb Raider landing in theatres this week, movie fans around the world have been wondering if Warner Bros. will drop the first trailer for Aquaman or Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and as this teaser confirms, it will be the latter.

More – HARRY POTTER: HOGWARTS MYSTERY Gameplay Revealed

The first teaser for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald just landed online, revealing that the first official trailer will be released tomorrow. The brief teaser doesn’t show any footage from the film, although it does include a pretty cool new intro for the Wizarding World franchise.

Check out the teaser below:

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7W22bEzI4M[/embedyt]

At the end of the first film, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne). But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings.

In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is directed by David Yates, from a screenplay by Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling. The film stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, with Jude Law and Johnny Depp. The cast also includes Zoë Kravitz, Callum Turner, Claudia Kim, William Nadylam, Kevin Guthrie, Carmen Ejogo, and Poppy Corby-Tuech.

DC On CW Weekly Review: Roy Harper & Nuclear Bombs

Monkeys Fighting Robots

This series will be a brief, semi-comedic review of the CW superhero shows. You can check out last week’s review post here. The only shows discussed will be ‘Arrow’, ‘Flash’, and ‘Supergirl’. There WILL be some spoilers discussed, so only look at the reviews you’re up to date on!

There was no new episode of Supergirl this week. Hopefully Kara’s resting peacefully, dreaming of hanging out with Jessica Jones and Lara Croft.

The Flash, “Enter Flashtime” (Mar 6th)

FLASH
“Too… many words… that we forced “Flash”… in front of… (copyright CW)

This episode literally runs the “time standing still” concept into the ground. It’s not a bad episode, and it starts interesting, but it’s not very compelling by the end. That said, what makes the episode work pretty well is the sweetness of Barry and Iris’ relationship. The fact she saves the day with her smarts is a nice touch. The “Harry Dead Wife” complex seems somewhat out of nowhere (maybe it was brought up on LEGENDS?) but it justifies Jessie Quick’s cameo. The reference to a new Earth-2 Speedster probably explains who the Coffee Shop Klutz is in the cliffhanger, but we’ll have to see if her schemes (or The Thinker’s, for that matter) make any sense at a later date.

SCORE: 6.5/10 Lightning Rods

Arrow, “Doppelganger” (Mar 8th)

ARROW
Remember when Diggle and Thea mattered EVERY episode? (copyright CW)

This episode is a solid action story, with a nice change of pace outside the “Two Team Arrow” conflicts. Roy Harper’s return isn’t super dynamic, but it’s cool to see Thea back in action. The personal conflicts of the core team is a nice reminder of how simple the show used to be. Diaz isn’t a super compelling big bad yet – his tank top and “family” speech makes him feel like an evil Dom Toretto knockoff. Also, the many flips of Black Siren’s allegiance is going to cause emotional whiplash at some point. Despite all its faults, however, this episode is focused and paced well, tied up neatly with the sweet action sequence.

(But now is NOT THE TIME TO INTRODUCE MORE AL GHUL STUFF ARROW COME ON JUST LET THEA AND ROY RUN AWAY TOGETHER)

SCORE: 7/10 Phone Books

Supergirl: 4.5 Weeks

Review: THE WALKING DEAD ‘Dead or Alive Or’ The Build Up Begins To The End

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The Lost and the Plunderers last week was one of the best episodes of The Walking Dead in a very long time. The episode was deep, personal, and punched you in the gut. With that said, tonight’s episode Dead or Alive Or starts the setup to the season finale.

Dead or Alive Or puts all the remaining chess pieces in play. Daryl, Tara, Rosita, and Dwight are taking a very long time to get to The Hilltop. Father Gabriel is lost and blind with Harlan. Eugene and Negan faceoff in a battle of wits. Maggie has to make the tough choices. Carol and Morgan are the Yin and Yang of crazy.

Side note: The house that Father Gabriel found will be important post ALL-OUT WAR.

Did anyone think crossing a swamp with zombies was a good idea? It’s a horrible idea but a great setting for horror. The tropes ran wild this episode with Tara and Dwight. Harlan even got caught in a bear trap! A great visual, but seriously, a bear trap? All the tropes kept the episode leading to a punchline, but it wasn’t funny. Again, The Walking Dead continues to pull the rug out from underneath you at the last second.

Tonight the audience was Charlie Brown trying to kick a football and The Walking Dead was Lucy, but if Eugene builds a catapult, it will all be worth it. One of the best aspects of ALL-OUT WAR in the comics appeared in tonight’s episode in the final minutes, and it will change everything. A bloody Lucile gave the episode the punch it needed to be more than average.

Josh Brolin Talks DEADPOOL 2, Calls AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR “Amazing”

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Fickering Myth got the opportunity to have a quick chat with Josh Brolin about both Deadpool 2 and Avengers: Infinity War. The actor didn’t give many details, but he did tease a bit of Deadpool 2 and called the Avengers: Infinity War footage he’d seen “amazing”.

“They’re both really good. That’s what I know. I couldn’t say anything about them before, but I’ve seen 30 minutes of Infinity War and I thought it was amazing. Deadpool I know is going to be very fun and funny, fresh, because it’s very different than the first Deadpool and I really enjoyed them both.”

Brolin was then asked how the two villains are different than previous Marvel villains, with him saying the following:

“Oh, it’s very different. That’s all you need to know. Very, very different”.

Brolin plays Cable in Deadpool 2 and the Mad Titan, Thanos, in Avengers: Infinity War.

Although his comments were vague, his mention of Thanos being “very different” gets me excited. Marvel has not been consisten with its villains, but Thanos must hit with audiences. The cinematic universe has been building to the Avengers’ battle with him, and fans need to be blown away.

Avengers: Infinity War is set to be released on April 27, with Deadpool 2 due out on May 18. Which film are you more excited for? Comment below, let us know.
