DC on CW Weekly Review: ARROW’s Season Finale All-Out Strike

Monkeys Fighting Robots

This series will be a brief, semi-comedic review of the CW superhero shows. You can check out last week’s review post here. The only shows discussed will be ‘Arrow’, ‘Flash’, and ‘Supergirl’. There WILL be some spoilers discussed, so only look at the reviews you’re up to date on!

Supergirl, “Shelter from the Storm” (May 14th)

Supergirl
This mansion may not be the most secure, but it’s a fun Luthor Easter egg! (copyright CW)

There’s a lot happening in this episode, as SUPERGIRL nears the end of season three. Bringing Samantha’s mom back isn’t much more than a reminder of how confusing the Space Witch rules are. Why do self-professed “World Killers” have such strict codes of who to kill? The renewed love triangle problems with Mon-El are not enough of a draw either. While the continuation of the Supergirl-Lena struggle isn’t super enthralling, the final beat in the elevator is worth it. The overall episode is kind of weak, but there are some solid moments along the way.

SCORE: 6.5/10 Dirt Collections

The Flash, “Think Fast” (May 15th)

The Flash
It seems The Thinker brain-swallowed a orchestra conductor at some point too (copyright CW)

Splitting up Team Flash results in several compelling storylines. The exact logistics of Flash Time are still a bit confusing, but the specific Barry vs Cisco conflict works well. The continued focus on Killer Frost’s origins has been a consistently solid story line for Caitlin. This episode features a fantastic David Ramsey cameo (though it’s crazy FLASH keeps using the stretchy-shape-shifting for basically blackface). Overall, all the progressing plot lines make for an exciting build-up for what will be a compelling finale.

SCORE: 7/10 Pizzas

Arrow, “Life Sentence” (May 17th)

Arrow

The season finale of ARROW ends on a rather anti-climactic note. So much of the episode feels like a watered-down version of what has come before. The action shots, including the big building explosion, is stuff we saw last week. Diaz sticking around seems like a mistake, like when The Governor stuck around halfway through THE WALKING DEAD’s fourth season. Oliver has really jumped around as far as whether he wants to be the Arrow, or a family man. The ending of him going off to prison is just like the middle of FLASH’s fourth season. Even the death of Quentin is spoiled from years of Laurel or Sara either dying or returning. ARROW’s sixth season finale doesn’t do much but remind us of things we’ve seen many times before.

SCORE: 6.5/10 PACEMAKERS

WEEKLY WIN TALLY:

The Flash: 9 Weeks

Supergirl: 6.5 Weeks

Arrow: 6 Weeks

Exclusive Preview: Jamie Jones’ THE WHISPER – The Legacy Trope

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Tampa Bay artist and creator, Jamie Jones has put quite an impressive idea down on comic book paper and Monkeys Fighting Robots has an exclusive look at the first five pages of The Whisper.

The Whisper is an ongoing anthology comic that will be released in chapters; each one a self-contained five-page short story. Each short is written by a different writer with art by Jones. What makes this book unique will be the fact Jones uses a different art style for each chapter.

The Whisper was one of those crazy/stupid ideas that wasn’t supposed to go anywhere. The kind of project you and your friends talk about making, but never actually plan to make it. But here we are seven stories in and no end in sight,” said Jones.

“”It’s an experiment on legacy in comics. The evolution of a character passed from creator to creator over decades. The total reworking of an outdated character. The replacement of a fallen hero. Comics is really the only medium that has the legacy trope, and it is, hands down, my favorite thing about superheroes. I wanted to play in that space in a short amount of time. Several creators adding and changing the character as they seem fit. The Whisper doesn’t exist or work with without the idea of hundreds of artist lending their talents to make him “real.”
It’s all respect. It’s respect for artists, its respect for the medium. The Whisper is my love letter to superheroes. I’m excited to see where it goes. The writers I have lined up for the second wave are great. And the stories are only getting crazier,” said Jones.

In June, the first six chapters of The Whisper will be available at HeroesCon in an oversized comic book. If you want to read the book digitally, Jones has created a Patreon page to support the project as well.

Chapter 1 is written by Jones, chapter 2 by Vita Ayala, chapter 3 by Matthew Jones, chapter 4 by Ryan Williams, chapter 5 by Frank Barbiere, and chapter 6 by Tres Dean.

Jake Gyllenhaal In Talks For Villain Role In ‘Spider-Man’ Sequel

Monkeys Fighting Robots

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jake Gyllenhaal is in talks with Marvel Studios to star alongside Tom Holland in the highly-anticipated Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel.

Marvel and DC Comics fans have wondered for years when they’ll see Jake Gyllenhaal suit up as a superhero, but it looks like the actor has been seduced by the dark side. If he lands the role, it is being reported that Gyllenhaal will be introduced as Mysterio, who is one of Spidey’s most iconic and formidable villains.

Tom Holland, who recently appeared as the wall-crawler in Avengers: Infinity War, is expected to reprise the role of Spider-Man in the sequel.

The untitled Spider-Man sequel is currently scheduled for release on July 5, 2019.

Vincent D’Onofrio Has Wrapped On Season 3 of DAREDEVIL

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Season three of Daredevil is currently filming, but Wilson Fisk actor Vincent D’Onofrio has wrapped production on the project.

D’Onofrio showed the world his Kingpin in Daredevil season one, however the character was only seen in one episode of the second season. With the Born Again storyline likely taking form in the upcoming season, Kingpin will once again be a major player in Matt Murdock’s story.

Born Again was written by Frank Miller and published in 1986, and, in my view, is the single greatest Daredevil story arc out there.

The plot revolves around Fisk learning Daredevil’s true identity to be Matt Murdock. Karen Page becomes a heroin addict and a struggling pornstar in need of cash. Because of this, she sells Murdock’s personal information to the Kingpin. Fisk, in classic Fisk fashion, proceeds to destroy virtually ever aspect of the hero’s life; from forcing Murdock on the street to attempting a murder by way of drenching him in whiskey, strapping him to a car and pushing him into a river, Fisk truly figured out how to break Matt Murdock. This is only a minor example, though, of the brilliant writing in the comic that puts Murdock and Fisk at odds.

Daredevil features Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, and Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson. Season three hits Netflix sometime this year.

Stan Lee Thinks Tom Holland Is A Great SPIDER-MAN

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Stan Lee should be considered the world’s foremost expert on Spider-Man. He helped co-create the character and has been witness to every incarnation of him thus far. So it’s safe to say people take the mans opinion seriously when discussing Peter Parker.  Well, Lee just offered up high praise for our current Spidey, Tom Holland.

Lee has become much more active on his Twitter as of late, updating fans on his status and offering up his take on the current state of comic book movies. One recent tweet saw Lee let fans know that he very much enjoys Tom Holland’s performance as Spider-Man:

It appears Lee may have had some issue with the age and size of the past two individuals who donned the web-shooters, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire. It was not a secret that the two actors didn’t appear the age they were intended to be on-screen. Tom Holland has had a much easier time passing as a high school student, so much so that Lee took notice.

In the past, Lee has spoken highly of Holland’s performance in Spider-Man: Homecoming, meaning that the young actor has really caught the attention of the Marvel legend.

Hopefully, someone was able to answer if Tom was doing well. Who do you think the best Spider-Man is? Let us know in the comments below!

You can catch Spider-Man in Avengers: Infinity War which is in theaters now!

Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk and the rest of the Avengers unite to battle their most powerful enemy yet — the evil Thanos. On a mission to collect all six Infinity Stones, Thanos plans to use the artifacts to inflict his twisted will on reality. The fate of the planet and existence itself has never been more uncertain as everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment.

DOCTOR WHO Alumnus David Tennant and Catherine Tate to Team up For New Show AMERICONS

Monkeys Fighting Robots

David Tennant and Catherine Tate, known by many as the 10th Doctor and his companion Donna Noble, will once again be reunited in the upcoming show Americons on Sky One. The series is being developed by the Welsh production company Bad Wolf.

According to Deadline.com, the show is in its advanced stages of development for Sky One. All that is known at the moment is that the show will follow the pair as they move to the United States. It does not seem like too much of a leap with the spelling of Americons that they two may be running form the law.

Doctor Who

The 2006 Christmas special of Doctor Who named The Runaway Bride, was the first time the two worked together before Tate became a regular on the show. Together the two were part of some of the best Doctor Who episodes of the series, Silence in the Library being one. Tate and Tennant have worked on many other projects beyond Doctor Who together. A very funny short called Comic Relief in which David plays an English teacher trying to teach Shakespeare to Catherine who portrays a student named Lauren Cooper and other students. As of late, the two have taken on the Iconic roles of Scrooge McDuck (Tennant) and Magica De Spell (Tate) in the newly rebooted Duck Tales.

Tate is reported to be bringing her comedic talents to writing the series as well as co-starring in it. I can only hope that given their past she tosses in a few Doctor Who references. More on Americons as it develops.

Are you looking forward to Catherine and David together again? Let us know in the comments.

Cartoon Network Reveal a New THUNDERCATS Show for 2019

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The ThunderCats are set for a comeback with Entertainment Weekly reporting that the Cartoon Network and Warner Bros. Animation are bringing the anamorphic felines back for a new series in 2019.

Along with Transformers and He-Man, ThunderCats was one of the most iconic cartoons of the 1980s, lasting 130 episodes for four seasons. The original show was created by Leonard Starr and the centered on a group of humanoid cats who flee their dying planet and crash on Third Earth where they do battle with the evil Mumm-Ra and Mutants of Plun-Darr. The ThunderCats are led by Lion-O, the Lord of the Thundercats, who has matured in body but not in mind: the problems of a heredity monarchy.

The show has been rebooted by Cartoon Network and Warner Bros. Animation in 2011 which reimaged the series being on a planet filled with various anamorphic animals and made Lion-O into a teenager. It was a series that had a long, continuous story about Lion-O and companions traveling the world as they look to defeat Mumm-Ra’s forces. It was a well-received show and I argue a superior show but it only lasted one season.

The new season ThunderCats Roar returns to the Third Earth setting but is clearly leaning towards comedy as evident by the announcement trailer. The art style is simplistic and the final bit footage shows that the action could be frantic and kinetic. However, the show seems similar to another Cartoon Network show, Teen Titans Go! which turned a popular action-adventure series into a comedy show and has been derided by fans of the original. Even the title (ThunderCats Roar) is similar to Teen Titans Go. Cartoon Network sadly has a history of canceling critically well-received shows like Teen Titans, Young Justice and the aforementioned ThunderCats (2011) and their schedule in America is a constant marathon of Teen Titans Go!

The series is produced by Victor Courtright who has previously worked as a writer and animated on the critically derided Pickle and Peanut and the voice cast includes Max Mittelman (the American dub of One Punch Man), Erica Lindbeck (Avengers Assemble), Patrick Seitz (Fairy Tales) and Chris Jai Alex (Star Wars: Battlefront II).

As someone who grew up on the original show and enjoyed the reboot this third version of the Thundercats already looks disappointing. The trailer has a massive dislikes to likes ratio on Youtube.

The Elrics Lost Big In FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST: An Anime Abstract

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Spoilers for Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

Did a mistake early in their career actually spell certain doom for the Elric Brothers in Fullmetal Alchemist? After you have enjoyed enough Manga and Anime you are able to read between the lines and can see a detail or two another may have missed. Through this and other detailed evidence you are able to piece together what really happened in a particular series. This results in an abstract idea, a thought which doesn’t have a physical existence but can be speculated. Welcome to Anime Abstract.

Probably should clarify which Fullmetal Alchemist we are talking about. This is not Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, which has one of the best endings ever to a series and showcased the Elric brothers winning in a big. No this article focus on the one from 2003. More specifically it focuses on the film, Fullmetal Alchemist The Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa. The film leaves the brothers setting off on their own in a world without alchemy and with the hope of stopping a former opponent’s research from causing further damage. Sad to say, this turns out to become as bad for the pair as Spider-Man failing to stop the robber who killed Uncle Ben.

fullmetal alchemist

At the start of the film there is a flashback to early in the pair’s adventures where Ed and Al stop Huskisson, a rogue alchemist who has created a destructive device (which just so happens to be a uranium bomb). Right as Huskisson is about to lose, he opens the gate and disappears to the world without alchemy. In the middle of the film, Ed is shown a picture of the bomb in the hands of the Thule Society, the occult and research group behind the Nazi’s. Ed and Al set off at the end of the film to try and make sure they can destroy the bomb and any research behind it. Unfortunately, the pair don’t succeed at least not according to history.

Fullmetal Alchemist

As the film takes place in the backdrop of a setting which reflects our world, the events of history come into play. The film took place in 1925 as the Nazi Party and the Thule society are in their infancy. In fact the film even recounts the Beer Hall Putsch, the failed attempted by the blossoming party to take the over Munich.

The Nazis would unfortunately regain footing in the country and rise to power. In 1939, Albert Einstein after a visit to Germany wrote the following to President Roosevelt about his findings with the Thule Society and their weapon’s research.

“that it may become possible to set up a nuclear chain reaction in a large mass of uranium by which vast amounts of power and large quantities of new radium-like elements would be generated.”

According to Atomic Heritage (where the above quote was taken) this letter was influential in the United States moving forward with the The Manhattan Project. This historic wartime science development project eventually led to the creation of the atom bombs which became a turning point in not only World War II but human society. The Uranium Bomb which Huskisson built helped to become the starting point for everything.

Fullmetal Alchemist

All of this took place because Ed and Al didn’t stop a villain on one of their earliest assignments. Uncle Ben is a drop in the bucket compared to unintentionally causing the birth of the nuclear age. Anyway you look at it, if you apply history to the end of the film, Ed and Al lost and couldn’t prevent the death and destruction they optimistically believed they could stop.

What do you think of the original ending to Fullmetal Alchemist? Leave a comment below and let us know.
