Review: 11 Reasons ‘Batman’ #20 Brings An Intense Conclusion To A Brutal Story

Monkeys Fighting Robots

As Batman engages in one of the most intense and brutal fights he has ever had with the villain Bane, he finds himself relying on the one weapon and asset that has always brought him back from the edge. It’s not a gadget, nor a physical skill or a martial art. It’s something deep within the vigilante’s mind and soul. Something that has driven him since the beginning. The memory of his parents.

Batman #20 brutally concludes the epic tale Tom King, David Finch, Danny Miki, Trevor Scott and Jordie Bellaire have been telling for five chapters now. And while on the surface it appears to be just another violent, intense round of fisticuffs, the REAL battle is going on inside Bruce’s mind and soul. This issue is all about Batman’s most powerful weapon – his relentless drive. Read on for 11 reasons why Batman #20 is a physically and emotionally powerful piece of comics storytelling.Batman #20

  1. How this arc completely works as an endpoint to one longer, multi-part tale.
  2. The way the art team imagines the fight, bringing out the brutality and violence with even the smallest detail (blood drops, sweat, teeth).
  3. Page layouts that completely convey the claustrophobic nature of this close-up fight.
  4. Finch’s ability to capture emotion in faces (especially rage in this issue).
  5. The frightening image of the Joker on page 7.
  6. King’s emotional and revealing interior monologue that works as the issue’s narrative.
  7. Batman’s vulnerability.
  8. The sheer imposing SIZE of Bane.
  9. “As Gotham burns, I will stand on one of your gargoyles”.
  10. The amazing splash image on page 18.
  11. The quiet and powerful way the story ends. “Yes, mother. I know.”

Batman #20Without a doubt, this was one emotional ending to an intense Batman story. King has been showing us the many facets of Batman and what makes him one of the most complex characters in comics. And now, he has done the same for Bane as well.

You can pick up Batman #20 at your local comic book shop.

Adam McKay’s Dick Cheney Film Lands Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Amy Adams

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Adam McKay, who’s appeared to have left dumb comedy behind for more politically-leaning fare, has secured a major trio of talent for his upcoming Dick Cheney Biopic: Christian Bale, Steve Carell, and Amy Adams.

The biopic will cover a long stretch of the curmudgeonly evil mastermind’s political career, from his time working as Chief of Staff for Gerald Ford, to his time with George H.W. Bush and Dubya. The report in Variety claims Bale will play the former Vice President, Carell will be warmonger Donald Rumsfeld, and Amy Adams Lynn Cheney.

Wait, what? Christian Bale as Dick Cheney? This is going to have to be some sort of impressive makeup and physical transformation job. There isn’t any sort of resemblance, and Bale has changed his body drastically in the past. That being said, Bale backed out of Michael Mann’s Ferrari biopic because he wasn’t going to alter his body weight so intensely again. Who knows…

McKay’s film will get going fairly soon, probably so it can capitalize on Awards season this fall.

UPDATE: BBC released a statement by John Simm saying that he will, in fact, return to Doctor Who as The Master in the upcoming series.

“I can confirm that it’s true, thanks to the power of time travel I’m back,” said Simm. “It’s always a pleasure to work with this great team of people and I can’t wait for you all to see what the Master gets up to in the next series.“

Take this information with a grain of salt.

The UK tabloid The Sun is reporting that John Simm’s incarnation of The Master will make an appearance at some point during series 10.

According to their unnamed source, a spoiler warning will appear directly after the first episode airs. A clock counts down to reveal the this massive secret. We won’t know for sure how accurate this information is until the episode airs on April 15.

john simm master

The Master has been a foe of The Doctor’s since the 1971 episode, ‘Terror of the Autons.’ Back then, he was portrayed by Roger Delgado, taking on the third The Doctor (Jon Pertwee).

John Simm took on the role of The Master in the 2007 episodes, ‘The Sound of Drums’ and ‘Last of the Time Lords,‘ against David Tennant’s tenth Doctor. He would appear again in the 2009/2010 specials ‘The End of Time: Parts I and II,’ which are Tennant’s final episodes as The Doctor.

The Master would not appear again until 2014, this time as Missy, played by Melissa Gomez. Gomez is also returning this in series 10, as we have already seen in a recent teaser.

Will both Simm and Gomez’s incarnation of the villainous Time Lord team up to square off against The Doctor? Or will Missy face off against her former self? Time will tell.

Series 10 is also the final one for both Peter Capaldi, as well as showrunner Steven Moffat. So, regardless if this information is true or not, expect huge surprises and revelations this year.

What are your thoughts on this potential spoiler? Would you like to see Simm’s version of The Master return? Let us know in the comments!

Is Makoto Shinkai the Modern Hayao Miyazaki?

Monkeys Fighting Robots

With the recent release of Makoto Shinkai’s Kimi no Na ha (Your Name), his exposure in America is slowly coming to light. Taking the top spot for highest grossing Anime film from Miyazaki’s Spirited away, the spotlights finally shine on the genius Makoto Shinkai.

Shinkai’s first piece, Kumo no Mukou, Yakusoku no Bashou (The Place Promised in Our Early Days), debuted in 2004. Ever since then Shinkai has continued to improve and received accolades accordingly. Truly breaking out with Byousoku Go Centimeter (5 Centimeters Per Second), everyone seemed to know that he was something special. Not quite yet comparable to Miyazaki but well on his way.

If you have seen a Shinkai film, it is unmistakable as to what he delivers in comparison to others. The breathtaking scenery with a focus on details that the naked eye might miss. Being able to take the simplistic and turn it into picture-perfect settings has become the Shinkai trademark. In some respects, it feels as though Miyazaki and Shinkai stand at polar opposites when it comes to production. While Miyazaki is recognized for his characters and story, Shinkai has taken the artwork route as his claim to fame.

Is Shinkai the next Miyazaki?

With the onset of the Shinkai wave already upon us, will Makoto Shinkai take the role of the next great anime film producer? To some extent he already is, but where Miyazaki had shown is what Shinkai currently lacks. To date, Makoto Shinkai has produced either Slice of Life or Romance based films, limiting his current repertoire. While it has aided him in drawing lifelike images due to extensive research of said areas, it makes the most memorable thing about the movies its realism. Maybe that is why his storytelling avoids fantasy to focus on the relatable. Miyazaki, on the other hand, was heralded for his storytelling in combination with characters. This was only personified further with an animation style fitting the times.

It seems almost fitting since Miyazaki will eventually retire even though his actions seem to say different. Shinkai, now 44 years old, still has many more years before retirement and we can expect more masterpieces to emerge. With the modern appeal that Makoto Shinkai has produced, it begs the question if his stories will always reflect his realistic animation values. Will he continue to write on more relatable topics set in the overused high school setting or take a risk and create outside of his comfort zone? Either way, it seems that Shinkai has set the table to become the modern Hayao Miyazaki for the anime industry.

Here Are Five Things We Just Learned About ‘Cars 3’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Cars 3

Disney/Pixar’s Cars 3 Road to the Races Tour made a stop in Tampa this week, and fans were eager to see what was in store for the third film. Among the showcase of merchandise and Cars themed activities, Disney/Pixar showed a twelve-minute sneak peak of Cars 3. Here are five things that stood out about one the summer’s most anticipated releases.

1So Close

Cars 3 is attempting to get fans closer to the action than ever before. In the clips that were shown at the event, we saw multiple close-up shots of the tires, the race wall, and how close the races truly are. Previously, the focus was placed more on the surroundings these characters inhabited and not on the actual cars themselves. This certainly is a welcomed change.

Review: ‘Flintstones’ #10 Is The Perfect Mix Of Drama And Comedy

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Bedrock is in ruins and its citizens believe their mayor, Clod the Destroyer, is to blame! Meanwhile, Bamm-Bamm develops his first crush. Can his best friend Pebbles help him get the girl?

Writing

Again the description is only half right about what is happening in this issue. Clod the Destroyer does ruin the city but there is nothing about Bamm-Bamm getting a crush. Instead, it features Barney and Fred loving chick flicks such as “Bridges of Madistone County” (which was pretty funny) as Wilma’s art lands her a job. Also, tragedy strikes a member of the cast.

It’s amazing how much we’ve grown attached to these characters. Even though it wasn’t one of the main cast, it does feel like a friend is lost in the course of the issue. Luckily, knowing how much of a dower point this would be, the rest of the issue is peppered with comedy. Jokes about people in power being stupid and the aforementioned sub-plot about the guys sneaking off to watch films in disguise are very amusing. Mark Russell once again delivers a powerful issue which will leave people talking about what is going on in the world and at the same time make them laugh their heads off.

Flintstones

Artwork

Steven Pugh on art and Chris Chuckry on colors are the perfect team to work on this issue. Their combined efforts deliver a perfect punch of comedy and drama which helps you to laugh and cry at the same time. Also, the pair did a fantastic job with the different dinosaurs drawn in this issue. If there ever is a chance of a reboot of the old series Dino Riders, these two need to be on it.

Conclusion

You’re probably getting sick of this site saying the same thing over and over again, but “Read this book.” It’s just too good not to talk about, especially when the quality hasn’t diminished for a single issue. It’s depressing this series only has two more issues left because if they kept up the quality at this magnitude, the audience would probably keep reading to issue #100.
