Former ‘Doctor Who’ Star Wants In On The Marvel Cinematic Universe

Monkeys Fighting Robots

While attending Fan Expo Toronto, Doctor Who actor Matt Smith expressed interest in joining the Marvel cinematic universe.

“I’d love to [join the MCU]”

Although he wants in on the Marvel cash cow, Smith did note that the project would have to make sense.

“They’ve got ask me though, the swines. But it would have to be the right project. It would have to be something that felt different enough to Doctor Who. I love so many of those movies and I love Nebula, because Karen’s blue. With no hair. Anyway, I’d love to… If you’re listening, Marvel.”

Given the MCU’s recent cosmic expansion, with films like Avengers: Infinity War and Thor: Ragnarok, there’s definitely a place for Smith somewhere in the universe.

What character would work for the Doctor Who talent? Comment below, let us know your thoughts.

Ranking The DCEU Films: Why ‘Man of Steel’ Takes The #1 Spot

Monkeys Fighting Robots

With Justice League only a couple months out, I’ve decided to take a look at the DCEU’s first four films and rank them. So far, Warner Bros. has given fans a superb Superman epic by Zack Snyder, a war-themed sci-fi tale in Wonder Woman, and two divisive, controversial movies in Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Without further ado, here’s how I’d rank the DCEU films.

1. Man of Steel

Man of Steel, without a doubt, is one of the greatest comic book adaptations to ever grace the big screen. I’m in the minority on this, however, it doesn’t inhibit my admiration for this flick. Zack Snyder created an epic origin story filled with a plethora of impactful character moments and gritty action, all set to amazing music worked on by the legendary Hanz Zimmer.

2. Wonder Woman

A war-set action blockbuster, Wonder Woman is a film created for fans of the character. Delivering on many traits of Diana Prince, the movie lets Gal Gadot shine as the decades-old hero. We’ve finally gotten a Wonder Woman movie, and fortunately, it’s one of the better action flicks of the past few years.

3. Suicide Squad

The first two films I talked about were great. Unfortunately, this is where the trend starts to dip. Suicide Squad isn’t terrible, but it’s nowhere near the level of something like Wonder Woman or Man of Steel. I like many of the characters, especially the dynamic between Harley Quinn and Joker – both actors did a marvelous job in their roles. Suicide Squad is seemingly a product of too many voices. There are two strikingly different tones prevalent in the film, which in turn ends up leaving the audience with a sour taste in their mouth.

4. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Oh, the infamous Batman v Superman, the internet just can’t get over you. While the movie did have some positives, like the introduction of Gadot as Diana Prince and the score by Junkie XL/Hanz Zimmer, the overall impression it left me was unsatisfied. Zack Snyder attempted to balance two completely different storylines, and it failed miserable. The feud between Batman and Superman was rushed, despite the runtime clocking it at a beefy 2 hours and 30 minutes. Ben Affleck portrayed the Bruce Wayne character as a mentally weak brute, and that’s fundamentally against the true interpretation of Batman. I tried so hard to love Batman v Superman, but ultimately I just can’t get over its negatives.

How would you rank the DCEU movies? Sound off in the comments below.

“Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.”

Justice League is directed by Zack Snyderand stars Ben Affleck (Batman), Henry Cavill (Superman), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Ezra Miller (The Flash), Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Ray Fisher (Cyborg), Ciarán Hinds (Steppenwolf), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Diane Lane (Martha Kent), Jeremy Irons (Alfred Pennyworth), J.K. Simmons (Commissioner Gordon), Amber Heard (Mera), Kiersey Clemons (Iris West) and Jesse Eisenberg (Lex Luthor).

The film hits theaters on November 17.

Star Wars Rebels Raises the Stakes With Final Season Trailer

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Star Wars Celebration 2017 seems like ancient history, but that is where we got a chance to watch the first episode from the final season of ‘Star Wars Rebels.’ Now, the day after Force Friday, Lucasfilm released the first trailer to Season Four.

All paths come together.

Executive producer Dave Filoni explained the Empire will have a new look as Admiral Thrawn tries to build a mightier fighting force.

“Thrawn sees value in building better fighter craft, especially to fight the more equipped Rebel ships like X-wings. Not everybody shares that point of view, though. As in all things, there’s competition for funding and power. We’ll see a little of that politicking in the Empire,” said Filoni to EW.

It was announced at Star Wars Celebration but you get a good look at Thrawn’s assassin – Rukh, voiced by Warwick Davis.

‘Star Wars Rebels’ returns to Disney XD on Monday, October 16.

Preacher Feature: Backdoors

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Preacher Feature is a weekly analysis of the AMC show Preacher based on the comic book of the same name by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. In this column, we will give a breakdown of the events from the previous night’s show, including how they relate to the comics, and speculate as to what’s going on and what might be coming up. This is to say that there will be spoilers, both actual and potential. If you have not yet watched the episode in question or are watching the show without reading the comics and don’t want to have any foreknowledge of what might happen to Jesse and company, then you would do well to stop reading this now.

Looking to get caught up?  Here’s a link to last week’s article.

The Three-Fathom Grave

“Backdoors” begins with a flashback to Jesse’s childhood that the show has been alluding to all season.  When young Jesse misbehaved, his grandmother had him locked in a coffin and sunk in the swamp for days at a time.

As we saw in “Sokosha“, Jesse, unwilling to send to Hell the part of his own soul that he gave the Saint of Killers, instead locked the Saint in an armored truck and sank the truck to the bottom of that same swamp.  He lied to Tulip, saying that he sent the Saint to Hell, and when she discovered the Saint’s guns (thanks to Featherstone), she was understandably pissed.  She was even more pissed when they had the armored car dredged up and found out that the Saint was no longer inside.

Between lying to them, almost getting them killed, and teasing them with the idea of a vacation (“Bimini, bitches!”), Jesse’s relationships with Tulip and Cassidy are reaching a breaking point.

Jesse Cassidy Fight

As the three of them argue, Denis’s dog won’t stop barking and that’s when Jesse puts the puzzle pieces together:  God was the man in the dog suit from “Damsels” the whole time.

Jesse heads to the Grail to get help tracking God, but Starr has a different plan for Jesse: Become the Messiah.  Jesse refuses, but on his way out, a troubling thing happens: the first time he orders a Grail agent to let him out, Genesis doesn’t work.

One of These Things is Not Like the Others

Back in Hell, the heat is on.  The search for the resident that doesn’t belong is intensifying, and Eugene is worried that when they find the suspect, rather than letting them out as promised, Hell’s leadership will make it worse for them.  His source for this info?  None other than Adolph Hitler.

Hitler, a former custodian in Hell, has a plan to help Eugene escape through a backdoor.  When Eugene is taken away for testing, Hitler organizes a distraction with the other hellions to keep the guards occupied while he and Eugene sneak out through “The Hole”.

Parting Shots

Unable to destroy the Saint’s weapons, Tulip settles for mailing them to Rio.

As the episode draws to a close, Hoover unleashes the Saint and tells him to “Do what he does”, then runs the hell away.

Easter Eggs/Connections to the Comics

The flashback shows Jesse’s “family” from Angelville: Grandma Marie L’Angell, Jody, and TC.

Questions/Theories

When will Jesse confront his past?  The whole season seems to be leading towards a reunion of Jesse and the villains of Angelville.  Will it be in the last two episodes of this season, or are they setting up the bad guys for next season?

What happened that caused The Word to fail Jesse when he tried to use it on the Grail receptionist?

Best Line

“Because I’m…Adolph fucking Hitler!” – guess who

With only two episodes left this season, what do you think is in store for Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidy?  Let us know in the comments.

A Klingon in Her Own Words – Mary Chieffo Discusses Discovery

Monkeys Fighting Robots

With their US release date of September 24th approaching, CBS has already shown off a great deal of promotional material for its newest iteration of Star Trek, but what we’ve seen so far is probably just the tip of the iceberg. Videos featuring Sonequa Martin-Green as Starfleet’s Cmdr. Burnham and Chris Obi as Klingon Commander T’Kuvma, both in their respective uniforms, describe their philosophies and seek viewers’ sympathy. These thirty-second teasers help generate hype, but don’t provide much insight into what the show will be like.

Luckily, the string of interviews with Discovery‘s cast and crew are just beginning. It’s not often one gets a chance to sit down with a Klingon. But, that’s exactly what staff writers at startrek.com did. Well, kind of. They actually sat down with Mary Chieffo who plays Klingon battle deck commander L’Rell. And although she didn’t have much to say about the new show’s plot, she did provide some insight into her character’s motivations.

A Klingon in Her Own Words: Source Material

Performing in the newest version of Star Trek gives actors an opportunity to draw on hundreds of hours of source material. When Chieffo got the part, she got to work reviewing every Klingon-centric episode she could find. A newcomer to the franchise who had only watched the new movies before auditioning (nobody’s perfect), Chieffo talks about watching a lot of late-season Star Trek: Deep Space Nine after learning she got the part. Specifically, Chieffo found the Klingon feminist Grilka a source of inspiration for her portrayal of L’Rell.

I love her story of eventually becoming the leader of her own house … Her strength and power don’t negate her sensuality.

As a new Trekkie, Chieffo certainly seems to know her stuff. Speaking about Grilka, who first appeared in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode “The House of Quark,” she had lots to say. “I love her story of eventually becoming the leader of her own house. Klingons are so patriarchal, so that was a great way to explore that story, in both episodes that she’s in.”

Showing off her far-reaching knowledge of Klingons, Chieffo also discussed K’Ehleyr, Cmdr. Worf‘s mate who first appeared in Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s “The Emissary,” and B’Elanna Torres of Star Trek: Voyager. “I love K’Ehleyr and I love B’Elanna, but they’re both half-Klingon.”

Although Chieffo says she loves to watch both B’Elanna and K’Ehleyr deal with their inner conflicts as Klingon-Human hybrids, she’s drawn more of her performance of L’Rell from Grilka, a full Klingon. “There’s something about [Grilka] I’ve tried to transfer to L’Rell, and it’s that her strength and power don’t negate her sensuality.”

A Klingon in Her Own Words: Makeup, A Klingon’s Best Friend

When asked if acting under pounds of latex is difficult, Chieffo mentions that her co-star Doug Jones, who played Abe Sapien in both Hellboy movies and Fauno in Guillermo del Toro‘s Pan’s Labyrinth,  had some advice. Recalling it, Chieffo says, “You have to have that emotional core. If anything, you almost have to be more grounded in the emotion, because you can’t fake it.”

Klingon
“Warriors don’t use straws.”

A potential drawback to the facial prostheses? Actors can’t eat when wearing them. Instead, Chieffo and her fellow Klingons drink specially formulated smoothies through straws to avoid damaging the expensive prosthetics. A Klingon slurping a smoothie from a straw, now that’s something I’d like to see.

A Klingon in Her Own Words: “It’s all Klingon to me!”

If wearing pounds of latex and not being allowed to eat solid food weren’t bad enough, Chieffo and the other Klingons need to have a functional understanding of the Klingon language. Although Chieffo finds the process liberating, it sounds like anything but. ” … we have to memorize the meaning of each word and the structure of each sentence, and make sure you really understand it logically, so that you can then inhabit it emotionally.”

Chieffo talks about frequent two-hour sessions she has with Discovery‘s dialect coach who helps her refine her pronunciations. Pronunciation is important because Klingon is a full, constructed language that’s been developing for nearly forty years. First heard in Star Trek: The Motion Picture and devised by James Doohan, who played Scotty, and the film’s producer John Povill, Marc Okrand developed it into a full language in time for Star Trek III: The Search for Spock at director Leonard Nimoy and writer-producer Harve Bennett‘s request.

A Klingon in Her Own Words: Getting Battle Ready

The rest of Chieffo’s interview with startrek.com focuses on her training and experience as an actor. Chieffo attended Juilliard among other notable acting schools and has experience playing Shakespearean roles and roles in musicals. With that kind of training, hope springs eternal that viewers may get to see L’Rell perform a Klingon opera. I hear ‘u’ is lovely. Sorry, I hear it’s courageous and bloody, not lovely.

If you want to learn more about Chieffo and her approach to what sounds like a multifaceted character, check out the full interview at startrek.com.

Marvel Legacy #1 An Icon To Return Marvel Comics

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Marvel Comics released a teaser trailer for Marvel Legacy #1 on Friday, and the final five seconds of the video held some intrigue?

“Marvel legacy also features a surprising unexpected return of a big Marvel icon, that will make it an absolute must-read for all Marvel readers,” said Tom Brevoort, the SVP of Publishing at Marvel Comics.

Who do you think the icon is? Some comic book industry insiders speculate below.

Miracle Man

marvel legacy

“If Marvel really wanted to go left-field and surprise readers with a ‘returning icon,’ they could introduce Miracle Man into their universe. There was a lot of buzz around them purchasing his rights several years ago, but seemingly not much has happened with him since. But the safe bet is probably more along the lines of a Tony Stark or original Jean Grey or Wolverine return,” said journalist Roger Riddell.

Fantastic Four

fantastic four

“If Legacy is going to right the Marvel ship with a returning character, the perfect candidates would be the Fantastic Four. This would be a healthy choice for both fans and the 616 universe itself given how empty it feels without the ‘First Family,'” said Monkeys Fighting Robots’ Brandon Griffin.

“I’m not certain whether Marvel is willing to take this gamble but if the company really want to make a statement with their MARVEL LEGACY, they could bring the Fantastic Four back into prominence. This would signal an attention to the history of their brand back to the days when Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created the team in 1961 ,” said Aaron Young of Comicsverse.

Tony Stark

tony stark

“The preview for ‘Invincible Iron Man’ 593 teases the return of Tony Stark. The book is one of series “spinning out of Marvel Legacy,” so it’s possible that ol’ Shellhead is the “icon” returning in the one-shot,” said MFR Editor Anthony Composto.

‘The Hollywood Reporter’ Made Up The Leonardo DiCaprio Joker Rumor

Monkeys Fighting Robots

At 3:00 a.m. EST an article hit the internet stating Warner Bros. is pursuing Leonardo DiCaprio to play the Joker in an origin film. This headline will surely get tons of traffic, DC Comics fans will run wild through the Labor Day weekend, and The Hollywood Reporter will laugh all the way to the bank.

The problem is the journalistic integrity in the pop culture world is horrible. Would Warner Bros. love for DiCaprio to play the Joker? Sure. Is it a reality? No. The Hollywood Reporter even states – the chances of landing DiCaprio could be slim to none. The Joker rumor is all based on an unnamed source. Sure, someone at Warner Bros. said, ‘We should get Leo to play the Joker.’ Every person in comic books makes their ‘fan casting,’ but wishing for something doesn’t make it true.

The Hollywood Reporter continues to say – there’s no offer for DiCaprio, and sources say Scorsese’s deal to produce isn’t even done yet. The publication even offers that Jared Leto is very upset about this idea as well. Their source for that statement – insiders.

According to my sources, The Washington Post is laughing at us right now. Pop Culture journalists chasing after every click because of publisher’s mandate makes it harder for honest reporters and editors trying to earn the trust of the public and deliver quality news.

The Hollywood Reporter even continues the Ben Affleck / Batman saga by stating – Matt Reeves is developing a Batman stand alone that, according to sources, will not star Ben Affleck

There are three unnamed sources and four no comments in one article. The Hollywood Reporter needs to hold itself to a higher standard and report the news instead of jumping on the DC Comics / Warner Bros. rumor bandwagon. If the story is right, get someone from Warner Bros. who works in the DC Extended Universe department to go on record for your article.

All we ask, is you try harder.

Batman, The Flash & Wonder Woman Featured In New ‘Justice League’ Image

Monkeys Fighting Robots

A new look at Batman, Wonder Woman and The Flash has been revealed in a new Justice League image, released by PEOPLE. The image, which shows the three characters in battle positions, gives us an amazing new look at the upcoming DC Comics movie and three of the greatest characters in comics history.

Check out the image below:

Justice League

The article also revealed new interviews with Ben Affleck (Batman) and Ezra Miller (The Flash), who discuss how Justice League differs from previous DCEU movies, as well as what it was like to work on a project of this scale.

“We all had a friggin’ blast,” says Ezra Miller. “I love this gang of weirdos, we’re all very different humans and we really love each other through and through. I personally always feel that the goodness of what we create interpersonally on a set flows into the quantum fabric of the film. I trust completely in this very esoteric understanding.”

“This is a step in evolution to bring together all of these characters who have had their origins,” says Affleck. “It’s about multilateralism, and it’s about hope and about working together and the kind of conflicts of trying to work together with others. Part of the drama of the movie is the question of whether or not the team is going to come together. It’s very different from the tenor of the last movie and there’s also more room for humor.”

Affleck then went on to discuss how each of the individual characters in Justice League offer something different to the film.

“Wonder Woman is very powerful, Aquaman is very badass — he’s got very strong and stubborn energy,” Affleck says. “Flash is a lot of fun and full of life and Cyborg is just a very smart and independent person. And we have some new vehicles that are really awesome, like the Flying Fox, it’s so big that it can transport the whole League and can carry a Batmobile.”
