Review ‘Marshall’ : Subpar Writing And Performances Derail This Biopic

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Marshall is held back by weak casting choices and a storyline which lacks the appropriate focus.

Summary

Marshall focuses on the work of Thurgood Marshall (played by Chadwick Boseman), and what he did for the NAACP in 1940. This film primarily recounts the case of Joseph Spell (Sterling K Brown), an  African American man who faced charges of raping a wealthy young housewife (played by Kate Hudson). The NAACP attempts to give Mr. Marshall this case, but a judge blocks his out of state appointment. Left with no other options, he enlists the help of Sam Friedman (Josh Gad) to serve as Spell’s attorney.

Marshall

What Worked

The casting of Boseman in the title role was the right decision. He brought a level of intensity audiences most recently saw in 42 and Step on Up. Why wasn’t he the focus of the film? Someone with his acting ability and raw talent needed to be the focus of the film.  Marshall should have been his film, but he ends up being overshadowed by his co-star.

What Didn’t Work

Jacob and Micheal Koskoff attempted to craft a narrative that comes off as more like a Lifetime movie than a serious film about civil rights. More time was spent laying the groundwork for this odd-couple relationship between Friedman and Marshall rather than their impactful work.

The casting of Gad as Sam Friedman was a terrible decision. His portrayal was stiff and at times a little too pretentious. Nothing out of his mouth seemed to be authentic. It did seem by just casting him, Boseman was forced to share the spotlight. Did the producers of the film not realize this was a film focused on the early days of one the most influential legal minds of our generation?

Why did Koskoff decide the focus of this film needed to be on the Spell case? Marshall’s career spans decades of cases where he has argued against profound examples of racism both on an interpersonal level and institutional one. He was the lawyer who against all the odds, successfully argued Brown v Board of Education which forever changed our educational system. The case of Joseph Spell doesn’t even crack the top ten list of legal victories in Mr. Marshall’s career.

Cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel utilized quick cuts when the camera focused on the number of people outside the courthouse. While this technique made each shot look cleaner, it gave Marshall a lack of authenticity. He should have spent at least a few seconds on these groups of people, who weren’t there to cheer on Spell. Why would you cut away from one of the more compelling elements of this story? Racism is at the heart of this case.

Overall

Marshall could have easily been one of the best of films of 2017. However, the writing teams lack of a focus took this story in an odd direction. Instead of trying to tell the tale of two men (Marshall and Friedman), the focus should have been primarily on the former justice of the Supreme Court and his impactful work. What could have been fantastic, is much more of a paint by numbers approach which leaves much to be desired.

5 Things Fans Of The Flash Want To See In ‘Justice League’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

After a few memorable cameos in last year’s Batman v Superman and a small appearance in Suicide Squad, fans will finally get to meet Ezra Miller as The Flash when Justice League lands in theatres this November.

Barry Allen aka The Flash will be recruited into the League by Batman (Ben Affleck), and other than the characters fondness of pizza and Rick And Morty, we don’t know much about how the character is introduced and represented in Justice League. To build anticipation for the hero, we’ve collected the five things we’re most excited to see from The Flash in Justice League, which you can check out below.

If you haven’t already, check out our articles for the five things, every Superman, Aquaman and Wonder Woman fan wants to see in Justice League.

5. References To Rogues Gallery

While the top spot goes to Batman and possibly Spider-Man, The Flash has arguably one of the greatest rogues galleries in comic-books.

With Justice League in theatres and The Flash finally introduced, it would be amazing for the film to mention and possibly hint towards some of the villains that the hero has and will face in future movies. This doesn’t mean that we need to see the Reverse Flash or any major villains in Justice League, it simply would be cool for Barry to reference a previous interaction with one of his many great villains.

4. Iris West Relationship

While I’m sure the Justice League reshoots have improved the overall film, it was disappointing to learn that Kiersey Clemons’ scenes have been cut from the movie. Clemons, who was reported to have a small role in Justice League, will portray Iris West in the DC Extended Universe and it was exciting to know that we’d meet Iris and get to see The Flash and his other half interact in the movie.

We might not get to see Iris in Justice League, but hopefully, we’ll somehow get hints towards the relationship that Barry and Iris share. Hell, I wouldn’t be surprised if the theatrical cut of the film ends up having a few scenes featuring Iris and Barry together.

3. References To Origin

Barry Allen’s origin as a superhero is a unique and interesting one as far as comic books go, so it would be amazing if the Justice League movie could show or tease how Barry got his speed.

It’s highly unlikely that Justice League will include a flashback to Barry’s origin, but we could see camera footage of the incident or even an explanation from The Flash himself. Other than Cyborg, The Flash is the only member of the team that wasn’t born with his superpowers (Batman doesn’t count), so we can only hope that the lightning strike is mentioned or shown in Justice League.

2. Explanation Of The Speed Force

Many members of the audience will know that Barry has super-speed, but only the die-hard fans will understand where that power comes from. The speed force is a complicated power in the DC Universe, and it would make a lot of sense for Justice League to delve into where The Flash’ speed comes from and how the speed force affects the universe.

Introducing the speed force isn’t something that is necessary to the success of the film, but as a major fan of The Flash, seeing Justice League attempt to explain the speed force would make my nerd heart double in size.

1. Time Travel

The Flash has a variety of amazing powers, but his ability to travel forwards and backwards in time is possibly his greatest. In a way, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has already teased Barry’s time travelling power, but I have a feeling we’ll see the character run into the past when Justice League is released.

From the looks of the trailers, this version of Barry Allen is still adjusting to his new powers and probably doesn’t know that he can travel in time. This might be something that he figures out or is taught in Justice League.

‘Beetlejuice 2’ is Still a Thing And Has Hired a New Writer

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Beetlejuice 2 is still apparently a thing that Warner Bros. wants to happen, and now they’ve brought in a new screenwriter to try and get this thing off the ground.

According to the Deadline report, Mike Vukadinovich, whose credits include a 2017 Sundance sci-fi film Rememory and Marvel’s upcoming TV series Runaways, will pen the long-gestating sequel.

As for the more important elements of this possible sequel, neither Tim Burton nor Michael Keaton have come on board as of yet. Both of them are working on Disney’s live-action Dumbo film (sigh) at the moment, and they have expressed interest in Beetlejuice 2 in the past. Winona Ryder went so far as to say this was a done deal over two years ago, but that clearly fell through somewhere along the way.

Then there’s the all important question: do we really need this? Beetlejuice felt like a fairly self-contained story that’s shown its age over the years. It doesn’t seem like audiences would be all that excited to see the continuing adventures of the crusty bio-exorcist. Plus, don’t we need Michael Keaton to spend these years starring in better films than a sequel to a thirty-year old property? Maybe it’s just me, but let’s redirect these assets elsewhere.

‘Happy Death Day’ Review – A Rare Misfire From Blumhouse

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Happy Death Day is out this weekend from Blumhouse Productions, the company behind recent horror hits such as Get Out and Split. It’s Groundhog Day with a horrific twist. Sorority girl Tree is killed on her birthday, but keeps waking up that morning and has to re-live the day over and over again until she can figure out who her killer is. Sounds fun, right?

It is fun, to an extent. The premise brings something different and fresh to the slasher genre, and Tree’s repeated deaths actually make for some humorous moments. In fact, it wouldn’t be too far a stretch to call Death Day a horror-comedy.

Unfortunately, fun as it may be, this flick loses all of its charm with its characters. There is barely a single likable character in the whole film. They’re all stereotypical “sorority bitches” or the frat equivalent. Then there’s Carter, the “good guy” that’s supposed to help Tree solve her own murder, and even he’s only semi-likable. It’s really hard to get invested in a movie when you can’t get invested in any characters.

Happy Death Day

Part of that problem is in the nature of the film. When you’re watching the same day play out again and again, it’s impossible for 99% of the characters to get any true development. But you should get enough time with them to see their different sides, and Scott Lobdell’s script just didn’t supply that.

Then there’s the protagonist, Tree. The point of these live-die-repeat movies, like Groundhog Day or Edge of Tomorrow, is for the main character to learn something about themselves from repeating the same day over and over again. Now, Tree does learn something in Happy Death Day, and she’s a different character at the end of the film than we first see, but that evolution never feels earned. We never really see her recognize her flaws and learn to be a better person – she just suddenly is one. She tells the audience that she learned a lesson in a monologue, which is a huge writing faux-pas, and we’re just expected to believe her because the plot demands it.

The horror element of Happy Death Day also falls a little flat. The live-die-repeat concept should allow the filmmakers to explore a variety of really awesome scares and deaths, but instead the audience is subjected to just a few jump scares. As mentioned earlier, this film straddles the line between horror and comedy, but it never really commits enough to either side of the spectrum. Instead it just gets lost in the middle.

The bottom line is that Happy Death Day is a fine movie. It’s something that you can put on in the background or at a party, but it’s far from the film that it could have been, and far from what we’ve come to expect from Blumhouse.

Review: ‘The Foreigner’ Jackie Chan Kills It (And Kills Everyone)

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Martin Campbell, who was the mastermind of ‘Casino Royale’, was subsequently banished after the ‘Green Lantern’ debacle; but the filmmaker has made a triumphant return to form with ‘The Foreigner.’

63-year-old Jackie Chan gives his blood, body, and soul over to his character, Quan Ngoc Minh. The ‘Man’s Quest For Vengence’ film has been done before, but not with this older, more seasoned Chan. The sadness of the events in the film overtakes the actor and fills the audience with compassion. Chan is known for his fun-loving spirit, to see that all taken away is an acting achievement on its own.

Pierce Brosnan makes for a fantastic misguided foe as Liam Hennessy, and the political drama surrounding him is a credit to screenwriter David Marconi. The film is based on the novel “The Chinaman” by Stephen Leather. Marconi had good source material to work with.

Campbell especially excels in the second act when the bombs started going off, and you feel trapped and helpless, like Hennessy. The off-balance nature of the action led to the questions of, ‘How far will Quan go to get his vengeance?’ The overlapping of the revenge tale and political power struggle made for a fast-paced thriller.

Chan and Brosnan dominated the screen time and rightfully so, but Orla Brady as Hennessy’s wife brings pathos and darkness that engages and repulses in equal measure.

The action sequences are bigger than Chan, which works to give the film a global feel and doesn’t burden Chan with the task of carrying the action side of the film. That being said, fight scenes with Chan are filmed perfectly, keeping them close and personal. The action is loud, but Quan’s sadness and determination mute the volume. Chan could have had no lines, and you would have understood the movie, a testament to his physical abilities. Quan made for a great contrast to Hennessy, with his over the top speeches to the IRA.

What sets ‘The Foreigner’ apart from similar films is Quan’s ‘hero’s journey.’ The film is dark, gritty, and horrific, but filmmaker Campbell lets a tiny amount of light (hope) through to where the movie has weight.

‘The Foreigner’ is a new type of action film, with elements pulled from the 80s and 90s, the grit of past 17 years, but a touch of a new flavor that’s fitting for 2018.

Kevin Feige Wants Marvel to Have Their Own Comic-Con

Monkeys Fighting Robots

As the Marvel movie machine churns right along into their third phase, Kevin Feige recently spoke about the benefits of comic conventions. More specifically, the Marvel puppet master wants to have his own comic-con one day.

Here’s what Feige had to say to Fandango:

“Over the years there have been discussions about that. I think what we try to do occasionally in San Diego we’re very proud of and think is a fun tradition. That being said, I think [Star Wars] Celebration is pretty amazing… I think we have enough content, and enough fans, and enough ideas that we could easily do something like that, I’m just not sure where or when.”

It makes perfect sense for Marvel to have their own comic-con, but what would that do for San Diego? There’s plenty to share between Marvel and SDCC, but it might dilute the buzz surrounding the biggest convention in the country. And what would DC, in their continuing attempts to mimic their more successful rival studio (even though they shouldn’t) plan if this were to happen? For now, it seems they should strengthen their brand before branching off on their own.

Like Feige says, there is more than enough content for Marvel to hold their own event. There’s no date or location yet, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see it happen sooner rather than later.

‘Black Science’ Cranks It Up, Approaching The End

Monkeys Fighting Robots

As Black Science approaches its finale, shit has really started to hit the fan. Grant McKay and his Dimensionauts are up against everything they left behind in the Onion.

Black science 32 cvr

***SPOILERS LIE AHEAD***

Writer Rick Remender promised things would be ramping up in this final stretch of Black Science. So far, he and artist Matteo Scalera have delivered on that promise.

Grant has done a lot of horrible things to the people he loves over the course of his life. It’s all come crashing down on his head at once, forcing him to be the hero his kids thought he was.

This final chapter is about Grant finally keeping his promises to his loved ones. He’s got one last chance to be the hero he’s capable of being.

Introducing Grant’s brother this late into the series has really paid off so far. He’s another McKay that Grant has let down countless times, except he’s been getting it from Grant since they were kids.

A lot of familiar faces, like Chandra and Ward, have come back in one way or another. The cast coming full circle adds thick layers to the spectacle and awe of this final ten issues.

Kadir has a gigantic reveal at the end of this issue, one that will certainly catch readers off-guard. Kadir and Grant’s relationship is like an even more toxic version of Mr. Fantastic and Dr. Doom. Their rivalry has been one of the most interesting roller coaster rides of the series.

Stakes are as high as they could possibly be for Grant and his Dimensionauts. Every page sizzles and rattles with sci-fi action and development.

Each and every issue of Black Science features some of the best comic book art available today. Matteo Scalera is unstoppable on this title. The whole art team takes this book to new places with each arc, constantly raising the bar for sci-fi comics.

Black Science will become an essential collection for every comic book fan once it’s all said and done. Rick Remender is one of the top writing talents in the industry.

Embrace this book, celebrate this book, share this book. An industry inspired by what these creators are doing here is a healthy one. We could all use a little more Black Science in our lives one way or another.

Review: ‘Marshall’ Weird Plot Threads And Casting Lead To An Average Film

Monkeys Fighting Robots

‘Marshall’ is about a young Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American Supreme Court Justice, as he battles through one of his career-defining cases. Peculiar casting and storyline choices take this from a great film to an average movie.

The writers of the film, Jacob and Michael Koskoff do no favors for ‘Marshall’ when they pick a court case in which Marshall is banned from speaking during the trail. Director Reginald Hudlin then doesn’t creatively try to give Chadwick Boseman a voice, and the film becomes more a story of Sam Friedman’s evolution. Josh Gad plays Friedman, and it’s hard to believe him as a dramatic actor, let alone the lead in a high profile court case.

Hudlin could have been trying to be as historically accurate as possible, but it doesn’t make a memorable movie. Biographical films and courtroom dramas are a dime a dozen, and it is up to the writers and director to make the film stand out. All I wanted from this film was to feel the drama, weight, importance, and compassion, but I left the theater empty and cheated because this was glimmers of it.

Marina Squerciati plays Sam Friedman’s wife, Stella. As the mother of a Jewish family, Squerciati has the best story-arc of the film, as her compassion evolves and impact of the heartbreak of the Nazi invasion overseas. This small, powerful moment in the movie is what I wanted to see more of.

Boseman, Kate Hudson, and especially Sterling K. Brown came to the film on a mission to give an excellent performance. Brown plays the accused rapist Joseph Spell, there are two scenes in the movie where Spell explains why he is scared of the police that is so powerful and the scenes are all Brown, as it’s a closeup on his face.

There are serval narrative choices that are simply baffling. Several women in the film are enamored with Marshall’s presence, and the way the scenes are filmed there is an awkwardness to them. This filmmaking choice leads me to believe Marshall is cheating on his wife, which wasn’t the case.

The second is, Marshall is always traveling, and work comes first, but how it was portrayed on the screen, Marshall comes off cold and uncaring. These moments should have been self-sacrificing and inspirational.

There is a balance a filmmaker has to achieve between historical accuracy and film enjoyment, and Hudlin misses the mark.

John Cena Butt Chugs Some Beer in This ‘Blockers’ Trailer

Monkeys Fighting Robots

First of all, the trailer for Blockers, a new comedy starring Leslie Mann, John Cena, and the great Ike Barinholtz, looks funny. It’s all about parents trying to prevent their teenage daughters from having sex, which would be especially funny perhaps in another time. Or at least another week.

Not that everything is interconnected – nor should it be – it’s just difficult to keep thoughts of the Harvey Weinstein scandal at bay, especially when Barinholtz’s character says his dad was “too busy high-fiving” him when he had teen sex.

Anyway, see for yourself, and be careful this one is definitely NSFW:

Funny for sure. And I love the three leads here. But it seems like Universal could have just held off on this trailer for a week or two until this whole Hollywood sex predator deal subsides.

Blockers opens April 6, 2018. Plenty of time to release this trailer, ya know, some other time.
