It’s clear that 2017 was the year of the woman, especially in the motion picture industry. According to The Guardian, for the first time in almost 60 years, the top-grossing films of 2017 featured female lead characters.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi beat out Disney’s Beauty and the Beast on the last day of 2017, according to box office estimates. Wonder Woman came in third for the year. The last time three female-strong movies landed at the top of the box office list was in 1958 with South Pacific, Auntie Mame, and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.
While Star Wars: The Last Jedi has an ensemble cast, the story centers around Daisy Ridley’s Rey, Carrie Fisher’s General Leia Organa, and Laura Dern’s Vice Admiral Holdo. “This film gives us women working side by side, women in technical positions, and of course women learning the ways of The Force,” documentary film-maker Annalise Ophelian told The Guardian. The space opera has taken in over $533.1 million domestically in 2017 alone.
In a remake of the 1991 animated classic, Emma Watson portrays Belle in the live-action adaptation of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. “[Belle] is absolutely a Disney princess, but she’s not a passive character – she’s in charge of her own destiny,” Watson told Vanity Fair. This film took in $504 million during its theatrical release in early 2017.
Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman is currently the highest grossing live-action movie ever directed by a woman, and it raked in $412.6 million. Elise Jost of Moviepilot says of Gal Gadot’s interpretation of Wonder Woman, she “absolutely nails the character’s unwaveringly positive outlook on life. She’s a force of nature who believes in the greater good; her conviction that she’s meant to save the world is stronger than her bullet-deflecting shield. She’s genuine; she’s fun, she’s the warm source of energy at the heart of the movie.”

One of Freeform’s most popular series is coming to an end. The Fosters will end after the fifth season. A final three part limited series is set to air this summer. Executive producers Joanna Johnson, Bradley Bredeweg and Peter Paige released this statement,
“First and foremost, we want to thank our fans — our supportive ‘Fosters Family’ — and Freeform for fostering this show. It’s been the privilege of our lives to get to shepherd this beautiful family through five seasons of love, laughter, heartbreak, tribulation, and triumph — and message to the world that DNA doesn’t make a family, love does. All while allowing us to explore some of the most pressing social issues of our era.”
The show may be ending, but it won’t be the last you see of two of its main characters. Freeform is currently developing a spin-off starring Maia Mitchell (Callie) and Cierra Ramirez (Mariana).

The untitled spin off is set in the future and will follow the two as they navigate their adult lives.
“Both of them will be faced with the challenges of working in a cultural divide all the while pursuing their dreams that have been laid into those characters throughout The Fosters,” said Freeform’s EVP Programming and Development Karey Burke.
Burke also says they plan to have all the original characters to appear on the spin off at some point.
The second half of season five of The Fosters begins Tuesday Jan, 9 on Freeform.
Having just hit a major milestone in accumulating over three million concurrent players on Steam, PlayerUnknown’s BattleGrounds Corp. is looking to expand not only beyond PC and the Xbox console, but to other gaming consoles, as well as Hollywood.
In a recent interview with invenglobal, ‘PUBG’ Corp. CEO Chang-Han Kim stated that he would like the game to become a ‘universal media franchise’ with a final goal of launching on every playing platform and, eventually, bring some kind of adaptation to either a streaming service or even to movie theaters worldwide.
“We are still in the stage of learning the console development environment and console gamers’ tastes,” Han Kim said. “We need to think about other platforms after evaluating and completing the Xbox One version first.”
Currently, across the PC and Xbox platforms, the game has over 30 million players worldwide. There are also plans to develop PUBG eSports Championships and maybe even animation or cartoon projects as well. The success of the game becoming an eSports title hinges also on the question of whether it is as thrilling to watch as it is to play. Shorter answer: It is. Streamers and YouTubers have captivated their audiences by showing off impressive mission victories, surgically-precise plays and ambush-type tactics on opponents, which make for great watches.
We don’t know for sure whether a structured and scripted movie would have the same mass-appeal as watching it via platforms like Steam or Twitch. The game is so much fun to watch because everything is unrehearsed and completely and utterly unexpected and chaotic. All things considered, it might not be certain this game would translate well to the big-screen. By all means, prove us wrong, but please don’t give us another Street Fighter.
Blink is back and ready to lead an all-new team of ragtag characters, navigating interdimensional adventures, this time in an effort to save the multiverse, as Marvel’s Exiles is set to return to print.
The new team, led by Blink, includes Nick Fury, an older Ms. Marvel, Kamala Khan, Iron Lad and a Skottie Young-type version of Wolverine, named ‘Wolvie’. As you will see from the David Marquez cover below, most of the team is pictured, but there is also another member blacked out, which is being kept under wraps by Marvel.
Spearheading this project are writer Saladin Ahmed and artist Javier Rodriguez. If you remember the occurrences from the ‘Original Sin’ crossover event, Nick Fury hasn’t really been ‘that guy’ lately after murdering The Watcher. He was transformed into the ‘Unseen’ as punishment and forced to take on The Watcher’s task of observing Earth. As the new threat draws closer to the multiverse, he seeks out Blink her team of Exiles to keep reality in tact.
“Exiles is a two-fisted, big-hearted wild ride of a book about a diverse team of alternate universe Marvel heroes banding together to stop a dire threat to the multiverse,” said Ahmed. “Grizzled old Kamala Khan! Disgustingly cute cartoon Wolverine! It’s a dream of a book to be working on for a Marvel fanboy such as myself.”
The original Exiles series, which was a huge hit, turned in 100 issues. It relaunched as New Exiles, and then also as a second Exiles series, which both ended in 2009. The concept was briefly revived as the short-lived series X-Treme X-Men in 2012. This group has had a lot of different members, mostly mutant- and X-Men-type characters, but the inclusion of both Khan and Iron Lad tells us that something along the lines of a ‘bigger picture’ is at play here and could be setting us up for a massive crossover event.
Exiles #1 will hit shelves on Wednesday, April 11, 2018.

When DC Comics announced a line-up of Hanna Barbera titles a few years back, the concept was met with skepticism by many. Some thought it would be an abject failure. Others speculated that it would have, at most, a moderate, fleeting success and soon be forgotten. Few would have thought it would produce one of the most important and subversive comics in recent years. And then shortly afterwards The Flintstones happened. Almost overnight the narrative changed, with Flintstones and many of DC’s cartoon crossovers considered among the best comics 2017 had to offer. Now Mark Russell, having been nominated for an Eisner, teams up with Mike Feehan, pencils, Mark Morales, inks, and Paul Mounts, colours, in an attempt to trump his own success with Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles.
Set in the 1950s, at the height of McCarthyism, Exit Stage Left:The Snagglepuss Chronicles (heavens to Murgatroyd what a mouthful) follows our titular mountain lion as the brilliant playwright attempts to traverse the complex political landscape he now finds himself in. It provides a chilling backdrop from which to explore both the lives of non-conformist creatives and the LGBT community of the time. The book discusses issues of prejudice, self-expression, and compromise, political and social. Heavy themes for any comic to tackle let alone one lead by a pink cartoon cat. Snagglepuss is a talented playwright forced to present the public with a hetero-normative facade in order to live some semblance of a normal life. It is only in the shadows of underground bars that he can truly be himself. The artist is only tormented further by his own growing disillusionment with the New York cultural circle that he once aspired to. A circle that is falling evermore under the watchful idea of the House Un-American Activities Committee. The stark reality of the duality with which many have had to live their lives is at the heart of a book filled with poetic, witty dialogue and colourful characters.
There is a moment early in Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles that cements this book as one of the year’s most important works. A character tries to explain to Snagglepuss the dangers being complacent when faced with the attacks on the basic freedoms and tenants of a democratic society. In a heated exchange he warns “the Clown is a joke to everyone except the clown”. In one panel, a singular sentence, the creative team manage to capture the political mood of the world in 2018. The book is a period piece, but more importantly it is a call to arms. A reminder not to let those central pillars of society erode without a fight. A reminder of the inherent fallacy in hiding the behind the mantra of “it could never happen here”. In that moment, the genius of the cover becomes clear. Our hero, as Lady Liberty, is a representation for the very rights that the creative team feel are under threat.
As impressive and compelling as the dialogue makes each of the characters, it is only when combined with the Feehan and Morales’ stunning interiors that they truly shine. The art imbues Snagglepuss and company with a realness that is lacking in many comics. This is surprising given the cartoonish quality of the artwork, wearing its Saturday morning origins on its sleeve. Yet in doing so, it manages to make a world of antropomorphised cats and dogs convincing. The influence of Steve Dillion cannot be underestimated, but it merely serves to enhance rather than detract from Feehan and Morale’s underlying style. The result is a book that is addictive in its readability. It makes for a quick read, not because it is lacking in substance, but because it flows so well. Each panel is practically bursting with background jokes or commentary that enhances the book upon repeated reading.
Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles is a stunning comic that’s depth and readability simply demands you return to it again and again. It is a story equally personal and political, bold and unapologetic, with witty repertoire to rival the best that Aaron Sorkin had to offer. It sets the stage for an excellent year of comics unafraid to tackle the important questions of our time. The distinguished competition have started strong, the industry is officially on notice.
The movie features a group of friends, playing a seemingly harmless game of ‘Truth or Dare’, which turns deadly, when someone — or something — begins to punish those who tell a lie or refuses a dare.
We remember playing this game and the only consequences for not complying to telling the truth or following through with a dare was getting dogged by your friends. This version, however, yikes!
This thriller will join a laundry list of successful horror projects pumped out by Blumhouse Productions, the company responsible for hits like 2016’s Get Out and Split.
The movie will hit theaters nationwide on April 27, 2018.
One of the best aspects of The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman is his ability to punch you in the gut with the final page of each issue. There are only a few books out today that compel you to read the next issue right away, and where the month-long wait till the next issue is agonizingly great.
The Walking Dead #175 is a landmark issue as Kirkman introduces a new status quo and smacks you in the face with new information about a fan-favorite character.
The small crew that traveled to Ohio has reached its destination, and the introduction of the new community felt like something out of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Running Man with the Storm Trooper armor and the gameshow persona of Lance Hornsby. If you add in Princess’ pink fur coat, we are definitely heading towards the 80s action era of cinema.
With his square jaw, clean suit, and causal demeanor Hornsby is unlike any character The Walking Dead Universe has seen to date. Hornsby has an almost robotic presence when he encounters Michoonne’s group for the first time; he remains calm, cool, and collected.
As with most of Kirkman’s writing on The Walking Dead, the pace is brisk, and the build-up is intense. What issue 175 does best though is make you think, “How will Rick fit into all of this?” He’s now 38, has a bum knee, and was parked on the sidelines during “The Whisperer War”; is Kirkman looking to phase Rick out with the introduction of the Commonwealth?
Charlie Adlard, Stefano Gaudiano, and Cliff Rathburn’s art needed to be on point this issue, as the script was dialogue heavy, with an emphasis on headshots. The opening two pages of the book have the most intense artwork as you have the eyes of Michone’s group against the faceless Storm Troopers. Rus Wooten keeps the letters where they needed to be, and the conversation was easy to follow.
Overall, this is a brand new day for the franchise, and it will be interesting to see how the next five issues unfold.

Gaumont, a French studio, known for titles like Hannibal and Narcos, is set to make its English movie debut with a U.S. version of the Korean hit, Train to Busan.
If you have never seen this movie, you need to. It’s as gripping, exciting, funny, heartfelt and gory as you would hope for in a modern-day zombie movie. It is a beautiful mashup of 28 Days Later, Dawn of the Dead (2004), and Snowpiercer.
This action-packed zombie survival horror is set in Seoul, South Korea, and follows a father and his daughter, aboard a bullet train bound for Busan, while a zombie virus breaks out. Passengers struggle to survive, but soon find out that the outbreak is not limited to merely the train.
From acclaimed animator Yeon Sang-Ho, in his very first live-action directing position, turned out over 10-million moviegoers and tallied more than $80 million at the box office with this project. It initially premiered at Cannes Festival back in May and quickly garnered the attention from several major studios, including both FOX and Sony, but Gaumont turned in the winning bid.
There’s no better time than now to catch the original before the U.S. version starts to gain speed (pun intended). It’s currently streaming on Netflix. Check it out and let us know what you think in the comments section below!
No. 1 With A Bullet‘s third issue comes out this week. Writer Jacob Semahn and Jorge Corona created the series hellbent on addressing today’s society.
***SPOILERS LIE AHEAD***
Nash’s world is coming down around her following the release of a sex tape with her boss. She also finds herself the subject of some sort of stalker who’s invaded her home.
In an interesting development that’s completely in-sync with today’s culture, Nash’s boss Jad actually becomes a star because of the tape. He’s the male Kim Kardashian now. Despite his publicist and the world’s acceptance, he still struggles coming to terms with what he’s done.
Jacob Semahn isn’t pulling any punches; his sights are set on the culture that we’re all a part of today. The double-standards that dictate where we throw our “likes” and “retweets.” How we mistreat these human beings that find themselves in a news story, whether by choice or not.
We still don’t know what’s going on in the background with Nash’s biblical obsessor, but what’s up front is an important story. No. 1 With A Bullet sets out to address and expose the other sides to the kind of life-ruining developments that are a common occurrence in today’s society.
It’s also an entertaining comic book filled with interesting characters. There’s so much life and distinction in every character, from the way they’re written to how they’re drawn and colored. This is a comic book with a lot of personality.
The way color transitions from panel-to-panel is stunning. Green could make up a character’s face, then engulf an entire panel as the color of a table.
Panels are laid out perfectly to allow the colors to contrast. Jen Hickman doesn’t need to use a lot of different colors, she hits hard with a solid, bold pallet.
Nash’s trip through delirium in the murder museum is a spectacle. Jorge Corona puts on a show as Nash fights fossils and goes down a history lesson rabbit hole.
No. 1 With A Bullet is an important story for today’s landscape. It’s a gorgeously drawn and colored comic filled with personality.
Netflix announced Wednesday a Bright sequel is in the works, and David Ayer will return to write and direct the sequel with Will Smith and Joel Edgerton expected to be back as well.
Check out the goofy Orc audition reel confirming the sequel below.
It is funny that the Youtube video mentions Alien Nation as this was one of the complaints of the film, that Bright ripped off Alien Nation. Hopefully, in the sequel Smith gets a chance to use a sword. The first trailer has a scene with Smith holding a sword, but it doesn’t mean anything in the film.
Bright hit Netflix before the holidays to mixed reviews but is the highest viewed Netflix film ever on the service in its first week of release. The film is the #1 movie on Netflix in every country (190+ countries) since its release with more people viewing the film internationally than domestically.
About Bright: Set in an alternate present-day, this action-thriller directed by David Ayer (Suicide Squad, End of Watch, writer of Training Day) follows two cops from very different backgrounds (Ward, a human played by Will Smith, and Jakoby, an orc played by Joel Edgerton) who embark on a routine patrol night that will ultimately alter the future as their world knows it. Battling both their own personal differences as well as an onslaught of enemies, they must work together to protect a thought-to-be-forgotten relic, which in the wrong hands could destroy everything.
No release date was announced.
