Image Comics: We Believe In Character

Comic artists don’t just translate scripts: they build characters. From choreographing the most subtle facial tics and body language to designing entire wardrobes, illustrators are master actors of ink on page. Giving shape to entire casts, they carve new souls on a monthly basis. The creators on this panel specialize in character design, from Leila del Duca’s medieval romanticism on SLEEPLESS to Jeremy Haun’s rugged post-apocalyptic fantasy chic in THE REALM, and Tula Lotay’s fashion-forward covers. Come see these shapers discuss their process, including Annie Wu and Jen Bartel as they preview their upcoming Image projects, DEAD GUY FAN CLUB and BLACKBIRD.

Image Comics: We Believe In Drama

Sunday, April 8, 2018 @ 10:45 – 11:45 AM in Room S403

Join a panel of stellar scribes including Kyle Higgins (THE DEAD HAND), Gerry Duggan (ANALOG), Tee Franklin (BINGO LOVE), Tini Howard (HACK/SLASH: RESURRECTION) and some very special guests as they discuss the friction that gave way to their latest works.

INFINITY WAR Writer On Connection Between Film and AVENGERS 4

Monkeys Fighting Robots

With Avengers: Infinity War out in just about a month, fans are already speculating about the Marvel cinematic universe’s future after the film. Avengers 4 is due out next year, but how much will it be connected to Infinity War? While there’s clearly a link between the two, Infinity War writer Stephen McFeely claims the movies almost belong in two seperate genres. Get his full quote below:

“We know pretty much what’s going on in Avengers 3. You’ve been told who’s the bad guy and what he wants for several movies and it’s not going to change: that’s what’s going to happen. you run it in the best possible way with twists along the way, but you have no idea what Avengers 4 is. Nobody knows, and that’s what makes me particularly excited. I look all the time on the internet: people have no idea! …4resolves the intrigue of Infinity War; [the movies are] clearly linked, but they almost seem to belong to two different genres. We did not want to cut a film in half and say, ‘Pay now and come back in a year for the rest!’ These are two very different stories, on a tonal and structural level.”

It’s pretty much impossible to accurately predict what’s going to happen in Avengers 4 with not having seen Infinity War. That said, however, it’s always fun to speculate and throw around theories. Many on the internet believe Infinity War sets up a Kree invasion and the Secret War storyline, but that theory’s authenticity remains to be seen.

“As the Avengers and their allies have continued to protect the world from threats too large for any one hero to handle, a new danger has emerged from the cosmic shadows: Thanos. A despot of intergalactic infamy, his goal is to collect all six Infinity Stones, artifacts of unimaginable power, and use them to inflict his twisted will on all of reality. Everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment – the fate of Earth and existence itself has never been more uncertain.”

Avengers: Infinity War features Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Chris HemsworthMark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Holland, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Sebastian Stan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Pom Klementieff, and Josh Brolin as Thanos.

Avengers: Infinity War releases on April 27.

The New Creative Team Does Wonders For CABLE

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Zac Thompson and Lonnie Nadler come in as fresh blood for Marvel to try and kickstart everyone’s favorite time traveling mutant, Cable.

Cable 155 cvr

***SPOILERS LIE AHEAD***

This is the third Cable restart we’ve had in about a year. The James Robinson one was a slow burner that ended up as a forgettable nothing. The second was by underrated writing talent Ed Brisson and plagued by god awful artwork. Hopefully the third time truly is the charm for our old friend Nate Summers.

Right out of the gate, Thompson and Nadler improve where the previous two writers have failed by giving Cable an actual voice. We spend time visiting his childhood and inside his current headspace. Cable has evolved passed the point of being a stone cold Terminator with little dialogue.

The man has a heart, it walks around in the form of his daughter. Hope Summers being taken off the shelf is always great for this comic and all X-Men comics. Her role in this story is an exciting one as both she and her father try to salvage their relationship and lives.

Cable #155’s script is deliciously 90s. The previous creative team went a little overboard with dipping into the past. Assembling a team of old school X-Force favorites wasn’t enough to mask the lack of story, especially when the dog shit art wasn’t doing Brisson any favors.

Thompson and Nadler are introducing 90s elements in a tasteful way. We get the characters and aesthetic of the 90s with the antagonist. We also get time jumps and techno organic virus action galore.

German Peralta and Jesus Aburtov completely sell this comic. The art is simpler, but still with a dash of ridiculous. Even the future sentinels and 90s cyborg villain are tasteful and effective.

Actual character dynamics and attributes go a long way. This new creative team and story comes out swinging. This is not only a fantastic issue, but it’s also easily one of the best Cable issues I’ve read in a long time.

It’s also worth mentioning the stellar cover art by Extremity creator, Daniel Warren Johnson. Can we get this guy more Marvel work already?

Review: PACIFIC RIM UPRISING Should Have Never Been Released

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Horrible CGI and a poorly written narrative are just some of the reasons why Pacific Rim Uprising is an epic failure. Why do you think Guillermo del Toro decided to focus his attention on The Shape Of Water rather than this monstrosity? Del Toro’s original film already overcame the odds and made an impressive $309 million worldwide. There was no logical way for a new story to even be developed and Universal should have stopped while they were ahead. Nevertheless, when a film does well, Hollywood’s response is to continue to exploit from that source material.

Pacific Rim UprisingSteven S. Deknight steps into the director’s chair for del Toro and the differences in styles is quite shocking. The Oscar-winning director made sure that the focus of his film stayed primarily on the Jager’s (robots from the movie) and the Kaji (monsters from the film). Both were visually stimulating in the colors they used for the robots and the design of the monsters. Pacific Rim succeeded in giving each a realistic appearance as well. Deknight went with more of a streamlined approach in both the appearance of the monsters and the robots. The result is the two most important elements of the film look out of place and don’t fit into the universe that was created in 2013.

Writers Emily Carmichael, Kira Snyder, T.S. Nowlin, and Deknight were tasked with developing a storyline for the sequel and it is a mess. Instead of creating an original tale that builds off of the first film, Pacific Rim Uprising is riddled with enough cinematic tropes to bore anyone watching to tears. Of course, we start with the most overused plot devices in sequels, the lead actor (John Boyega) being related to a beloved character who died. In this case, Boyega is the son of Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba) who perished saving the world years ago. His role, of course, has an edge to it (shocking) but Stacker’s son meets his match in a streetwise junk dealer named Amara Namani (Cailee Spaney). They both get picked up by the police after taking Namani’s rogue Jager for a spin and thrown in jail. They are given a choice, either face hard time or enlist in the Pan Pacific Defense Corps (Gee… I wonder what they pick). We are then transported to their arrival at a base where they are greeted by Army Ranger Nate Lambert (Scott Eastwood) who predictably has a bone to pick with the son of Stacker Pentecost. Inevitably, they have to put their differences aside to fight off an enemy which threatens humanity.

If the intended goal is to build upon the success of Pacific Rim, why didn’t someone come up with an original direction for the sequel? Instead, the writing team wasted 2/3 of the film trying to build upon the faux tension between Eastwood and Boyega’s character, while Spaney’s character spends a chunk of time trying to prove herself to the other recruits. Was the sequel meant to be a character piece with far fewer monsters? Audiences don’t even get to see the beasts until the third act, and even that was a letdown. Also, if the intention is to make the sequel more of a character-driven film then bring on better actors!

The cinematography was entirely basic and added nothing to the overall quality of the piece. What was probably most shocking was how horrid the special effects were. The CGI looked dingy. The scene at the pier seemed like something that was shot by a high school AV class. However, none of these issues even matches the bland performances given by our lead actors.

Boyega proved once and for all that he’s not a leading man. His performance was dull and at some points extremely rote. Eastwood isn’t any better either. While both are tasked with carrying the storyline, they each miserably fall short of their intended goal.

Overall, there’s nothing redeemable about this release. If someone in your family is a megafan of the first film, give it a shot (I guess). However, if anyone is an average moviegoer (like myself), then avoid Pacific Rim Uprising. There’s plenty of movies coming out soon which deserve your patronage.

Review: I KILL GIANTS Is A Gut Punch Of A Film

Monkeys Fighting Robots

I Kill Giants was a limited series by Image Comics released in 2008, written by Joe Kelly, with art by J. M. Ken Niimura. The movie adaptation hits theaters this week.

Kelly has the luck of writing his own screenplay, and Oscar-winner Anders Walter directs his first feature-length film. Madison Wolfe stars as the lead Barbara Thorson with Zoe Saldana as the caring school psychologist Mrs. Mollé.

Barbara struggles through life by escaping into a fantasy life of magic and monsters.

The film has the feel of Bridge to Terabithia and/or The Boy Who Could Fly with mystical elements in a non-mystical world. What the film lacked was the feel of Goonies and/or Stranger Things, where all the kids involved are relatable and you gain attachment to the characters. Barbara is an awkward bad-ass in the vain of Dr. House, condescending brilliant. The emotional reveal is held until the very end, but the script never lets you in, and you feel detached from events. Even Mrs. Mollé and Barbara’s sister Karen are begging her to let someone in. Sophia, the new girl in town,  is the film’s best chance at an everyman type of character. If the film was told from her point of view we might be having a different conversation,  as the end of the film is an emotional battle reminiscent of Lieutenant Dan in the crow’s nest during the mighty storm.

Comic books and film are two different mediums with two different expectations. Comic books have an infinite production budget and readers are more willing to get lost in a book. Movies have finite budgets and it’s harder to persuade the suspension of disbelief in a viewer. Kelly put his vision out there, and you have to respect him for it. On the other hand, the film may have been best served with an outsider’s perspective on how to best convey the message.

Review: I KILL GIANTS Is A Gut Punch Of A Film

By the look of the film and the angles of the camera, you can tell Walter has won an Oscar and has bright future behind the camera. He does his best to be true to Niimura’s artwork. From the close-ups to the wide angle of giants, Walter tries to create comic book style panels out of the film without being obvious.

Fans of the book will enjoy watching the magic unfold on the big screen. The message and visuals are strong, but the film is slightly off and loses that much-needed audience connection.

Review: SUPERMAN #43 Has a Fun, Exciting Adventure with Boyzarro

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The adventure with Boyzarro in Superman #43 is exciting, fun, and a little bit emotional.

Last issue clearly had two goals for its story. The first was to introduce readers to Bizarro World and its new denizen, Boyzarro, son of Bizarro. The second was to have Superboy poke around enough for the Bizarro denizen to become curious and jumpstart the plot. After running from a fight between Bizarro and Loiz (Lois Lane’s Bizarro doppelgänger), Boyzarro finds his way into the main DC Earth. He stalks Superboy and when he settles for bedtime, Boyzarro breaks through his window. What will happen to the Boy of Steel?
Boyzarro breaks through

**Some Spoilers Below**

Story:

After following Superboy home, Boyzarro begins questioning the Boy of Steel who he is. Jon, being the kind-hearted half-Kryptonian he is, welcomes him. The two begin to bond as equals, but Superboy realizes Boyzarro doesn’t have a very good home life. Before he can offer him a place to stay, Superman rockets in to face the “threat” on his son. This leads to a fight between the Bizarro denizen facing-off against the Man of Steel. Meanwhile, on Bizarro World, the Backwards Bruiser himself finally realizes his son is missing, just as a new threat rises.

Boyzarro attacks

This story can be summed up in three characteristics: humorous, fun, and emotional. There is a ton of humor from the backward antics of Boyzarro and his father. Sometimes it’s the reverse of a legendary stereotype, sometimes it’s the childish nature, but whenever a Bizarro is on the page I couldn’t help but giggle. They’re just so fun to see go against the Man of Steel.

There are also a surprising amount of emotional moments from Boyzarro. He’s afraid to go home because his father really isn’t that good and you feel bad for the backwards Boy of Steel. Boyzarro reacts to everything as a child would, from apologizing sheepishly to hiding from adults. If it wasn’t for the freezing eye beams and fire breath, you’d want to give the poor kid a hug.

Boyzarro dangerous?

Art:

Patrick Gleason brings his A-game when it comes to the illustrations of this issue. He is able to make the people of Bizarro world look silly but can still make them terrifying when they need to be. It’s the range of emotion in the art that makes the entire issue feel more alive and entrancing to readers. The colorists of the issue also played a big part in this. Stephen Downer and Alejandro Sanchez work together to make a vibrant and colorful world and used the lighting to show emotion. The art team as a whole was able to make a great story look fantastic.

Conclusion:

Overall, this is a solid second chapter to the Boyzarro arc. The story has plenty of humor, action, and is able to pull the heartstrings. The art goes above and beyond to make the world feel alive. The only major problem I can say is that the Bizarro talk might confuse the uninitiated. If you can get over that hurdle, however, you’ll be in for a treat of an issue.

New Trailer Released For ‘Hotel Translyvania 3’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The Monsters are going on vacation!

Sony Pictures Animation has released a shiny new trailer for the third Hotel Transylvania movie Hotel Transylvania: Summer Vacation.

It was released Wednesday morning and shows Drac (Adam Sandler), his daughter Mavis (Selena Gomez), and their friends Frankenstein (Kevin James), and Wayne the Werewolf (Steve Buscemi) go on a much needed vacation cruise.

The cruise specifically for monsters, doesn’t go as planned as Drac runs into famous monster hunter and arch nemesis Abraham Van Helsing (Jim Gaffigan) while on the ship.

Joining the cast is also Katheryn Hahn, who’s playing Erika the captain/cruise director and love interest for Drac.  She’s also the great grand daughter of Van Helsing.

During an interview with USA Today the actress described her character as, “enthusiastic cheerleader with a dark underbelly (and) a cute blond haircut. She is like my circus flying-trapeze fantasy come to life.”

“She really believes in her legacy as a monster hunter and wants to fulfill her destiny. She doesn’t anticipate feeling anything but hate toward these creatures. And, of course, she does.”

“Oddly, if you do research on Van Helsing, he almost comes across as a comedic villain with his obsessive, driven, over-educated personality,” said Jim Gaffigan, who changed his voice to play the villain.

“My normal voice was too slow to capture (his) energy and drive.”

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation is set to hit theaters July 13, 2018.

PACIFIC RIM UPRISING Review: Bigger Is Not Always Better

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Pacific Rim Uprising is the sequel to 2013’s surprise hit Pacific Rim, but it doesn’t quite capture the same lightning in a bottle.

Uprising picks up 10 years after its predecessor. Jake Pentecost (John Boyega), son of General Stacker Pentecost from the first film, is pulled back into the PPDC just as new threats from beyond the Breach rear their ugly heads.

Boyega is by far the movie’s strongest attribute. Between his acting ability and his natural charisma, he steals the show and makes for the better leading man between both Pacific Rim flicks. He’s funny, he’s charming, and you actually care about his well-being. There’s hope for this franchise yet if they decide to build it around him moving forward.

Pacific Rim Uprising

Outside of Boyega’s performance however, Uprising faces a whole host of problems. There’s its dialogue, stilted in both the way it’s written and the way it’s acted. Then there are its underdeveloped new characters, who give us no reason to care whether they live or die (including a quasi-love interest that’s shoehorned into the story and barely used). But, granted, these are somewhat forgivable sins for a “robots vs aliens” action movie. What’s NOT forgivable is the movie’s biggest problem: its pacing.

This story is 75% build-up. We spend an inordinate amount of time meeting characters and establishing a new world order before the main conflict is introduced to drive the plot forward. The first Pacific Rim managed to do both these things simultaneously. It had a simple but effective conflict: monsters come to Earth through Breach, giant robots have to fight monsters and close Breach. Uprising doesn’t show its cards until way late in the game, and then it feels like a mad dash to the end. Which is rough, because they’re good cards. If the script was structured differently, this could have been a very enjoyable time at the theater. And while the movie is never boring, it just feels unbalanced. Characters moments and emotional beats never have time to settle; the payoff is rushed and isn’t worth all the time you put into it.

However, if all you’re looking for are sick visual effects, then you’re in luck. The Jaegers are again badass to watch in action, and the effects team really ups their game on anything Kaiju-related. The filmmakers clearly attempt to top the last film with a “bigger is better” approach. It’s cliché in almost a funny way (one of the characters even literally says “bigger is better”), but what else do you expect in a movie that can only be described as “giant robots vs killer kaiju”?

Pacific Rim Uprising, but he can only do so much. You should be able to go to this movie and get lost in the nonsense. Instead, major pacing issues and terrible characters will leave you wondering “what the hell is going on?”
