Review ‘The Dark Tower’: The Summer’s Most Disappointing Release

Monkeys Fighting Robots

A thinly developed narrative and plodding action sequences transform this adaptation of Stephen King’s wonderful series, The Dark Tower into a middling 85-minute bore.

Summary

The film’s narrative centers around the ongoing war between The Man in Black (who some assume is playing some sort of variation of the devil) and The Gunslingers. The Man in Black’s (Matthew McConaughey) sole purpose is to unleash hell on all worlds and the only standing in his way is The Dark Tower which wards off evil from other worlds. He builds a weapon that harnesses the power of a child’s mind to help destroy it. The only people standing in his way is the last of the Gunslingers (Idris Elba) and an Earth bound boy (Tom Taylor) with psychic powers.

The Dark Tower

What Worked

Elba was able to make the most of this haphazardly structured narrative. He stepped into the role of Roland Deschain and brought an element of gravitas to the role. His character wasn’t this person who was pure of heart. Revenge is what drove him for almost 80% of the film. Elba isn’t typically cast as the lead and hopefully, this is a sign of things to come. (Are you listening Bond Producers?)

Director Nikolaj Arcel certainly was ambitious to tackle such ambitious source material. The Dark Tower is one of Stephen King’s most well-written pieces and is certainly revered by legions of King’s fans.

What Didn’t Work

This type of source material would have been difficult for the most gifted of adaptors but to pick two writers with little success and experience adapting stories for the big screen was a foolish move. Jeff Pinkner’s biggest claim to fame is that he wrote a few episodes of the final season of Fringe. Akiva Goldsman at least has some experience adapting books for the big screen. However, his biggest hit, The Davinci Code has the same issues The Dark Tower has. Goldsman is more concerned about reaching some sort of a resolution in the narrative rather than allowing things to develop. During the film, we have snapshots of a war that has unfolded between The Man In Black and The Gunslingers. We don’t know if there were others fighting The Gunslingers. We don’t know if it was just this large group of protectors of the tower vs. McConaughey’s character. It seems clear that there’s much more to this story that the screen writers simply avoided. Why? Sometimes the best narratives take place over the course of a few films (which was the original intention) and now as this film crumbles to pieces, the chances of a sequel are slim.

McConaughey’s performance as The Man In Black doesn’t evoke any sort of fear. His portrayal is more a caricature than any sort of performance. Was he a victim of a poor narrative? Perhaps, but remember Idris Elba was able to take the same narrative and develop a character that was at least commendable.

The action sequences needed to be more uptempo and contain less use of slow motion. It’s neat the first twenty seconds to see Elba shooting at McConaughey and seeing him dodge the bullets like he was in the Matrix, but after that, there was nothing exciting. The most intricate sequences were also the most predictable and that shouldn’t have been the case.

Overall

For those who have read King’s series, this adaptation of The Dark Tower is nothing short of an insult. If you happen to be like me and have never read the series, then this film comes off as nothing more than a barely average science fiction film. One thing this film has done is motivate me to begin reading this series. So if you are a die hard fan of King’s work, perhaps waiting till It is released in September is your best course of action.

The Ten Best Rogues Galleries In Pop Culture History

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Great Rogues Galleries Are Not Only For Superheroes

In comic books, the collective name for a group of villains is a rogues gallery. The term dates back 1855 when police would call a collection of criminal photos their rogues’ galleries. But this idea isn’t just for comics or police; so many movies and TVs contain a notable gang of baddies. Behind every great hero is a group of villains trying to kill them!

Below is a collection of the best rogues galleries in pop culture history.

Honorable Mentions:
Scooby Doo (Creeper, Ghost of Redbeard, Witch Doctor, Black Knight)
Darkwing Duck (NegaDuck, Beagle Boys, Fearsome Five, Magica De Spell)
Superman (Lex Luthor, Doomsday, Metallo, Zod, Brainiac)

1Batman

(EXAMPLE: The Joker, Penguin, Two-Face, Catwoman, Black Mask, Deathstroke)

No matter if it was comic books or all popular culture, Batman’s villains are the most famous. The Joker alone is grand enough to place The Dark Knight at the top of this list. While fellow DC hero The Flash dubbed his villains a “rogues gallery” first, these residents of Arkham Asylum are the worst baddies around.

James Gunn On The Difficulties Of Writing ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The first ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ was a fast paced adventure loaded with jokes as the team assembled and skipped across the universe. Vol.2 slowed the pace and over played the jokes, in turn, Chris Pratt’s Star Lord suffered because of this. Filmmaker James Gunn needed to show more and explain less in Vol. 3.

As ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ approaches the crew of the Guardians of the Galaxy will be busy working with the Avengers for the next two years. Look for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ to hit theaters in May or August of 2020. As for the plot for a third Guardians film, Gunn gave a brief overview of what he’s trying to accomplish.

“It’s been pretty easy. The truth is, the first movie is the first act, the second movie is the second act, and the third movie is the third act so I’m tying a lot of stuff together in the third film. We get a lot of answers on a lot of different things, so doing that in an elegant way takes a little bit of grace and elegance. It’s more challenging in that respect writing the third movie than the second movie,” said Gunn to Collider.

Gunn also said that in his writing process he builds out a treatment for each film, roughly 70 pages with pictures and concepts. From this, he pulls the script together.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ will be written and directed by Gunn and should star Bradley Cooper, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Zoe Saldana, and Pom Klementieff.

Stay tuned for more news about ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ as we approach 2020.

Why did ‘Daisuki’ fail?: An Anime Abstract

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Why did up and coming streaming service Daisuki recently decide to close up shop? After you have enjoyed enough Manga and Anime you are able to read between the lines and can see a detail or two another may have missed. Through this and other detailed evidence you are able to piece together what really happened in a particular series. This results in an abstract idea, a thought which doesn’t have a physical existence but can be speculated. Welcome to Anime Abstract.

Friends, Romans, countrymen lend me your ears. I have come to bury Daisuki, not to praise them. After four years, the streaming anime service has announced their plan to close up shop on October 31st, 2017. How could a platform once called “The Netflix of Anime” come to an end? With this edition of Anime Abstract, we will look at why the streaming service will be closing after such a short amount of time in the market.

The Good

Let’s start with what the site had going for it. It started with a small catalog of titles, but they were very well known and popular ones. Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Sword Art Online, and Mobile Suit Gundam SEED were all available as soon as the website launched. The website would later expand to include new shows and would even simulcast titles including the latest series from the Gundam franchise known as Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans. .

The biggest of these simulcast titles was One Punch Man, a series many said was one of the best animes to come out of 2015. The acquisition of one of the most influential series of the year really helped to improve the membership for the site. Unfortunately, this is where the site’s luck came to an end.

Gundam Barbados

What Didn’t Work

The problems which resulted in the sites closure are pretty obvious. For starters the site launched without any brand new series. It had been years since Sword Art Online and Puella Magic Madoka Magica were released and both were already available on Netflix.

The website also suffered from a lack of diversity in its catalog. Despite having access to titles from the founding studios of Aniplex, Sunrise, and Toei Animation, the website seemed to specialize in mecha anime as it featured titles like Heavy Metal L-Gaim, GaoGaiGar: King of the Braves, Aura Battler Dunbine, and several titles from the Gundam franchise. While this genre does have a lot devoted fans, carrying a specific genre of an already niche form of entertainment is not always a recipe for success.

Daisuke also employed special screenings of specific titles but took them down far too quickly. For example, several of the Gundam: The Origin specials were allowed to be on the site but only for a short period of time before they were removed. Most viewers prefer titles not dropping from the site soon after being put on there.

Anime strike

The Biggest Issue

The most glaring problem which resulted in the closing of Daisuki is the stiff competition it faced. Numerous other streaming services exist offering anime and having more resources than Daisuki had. Netflix for example, already a big name with their streaming service also helped to finance the creation of new anime shows. Crunchryoll had the advantage of having an insanely large catalog of titles with them. Amazon created its own channel of anime called Anime Strike allowing their subscribers different titles. In comparison, Daisuki just couldn’t compete and decided to call it quits.

In the end, Daisuki was an underdog which got trampled by groups with more resources, options, and funding. It will be sad to see it go but there are plenty of other anime streaming options available to on the web. Farewell Daisuki and thanks for all the Gundam.

What are your thoughts over the demise of Daisuki? Leave a comment below and let us know.

Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman Will Appear In The ‘Flashpoint’ Movie

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Warner Bros. and DC Films shocked San Diego Comic-Con and the world when they announced that The Flash movie is officially titled Flashpoint. Fans of the comic-book storyline will be well aware that Flashpoint has a significant influence on the DC Universe, and features an extensive collection of DC characters, including Wonder Woman.

According to Forbes, Gal Gadot will reprise her role as Diana Prince aka. Wonder Woman in the Flashpoint movie, which won’t come as a massive surprise to most fans. The original storyline heavily features the larger DC Universe, with the majority of DC’s most successful characters popping up. In fact, it wouldn’t be a surprise to learn that Aquaman, Cyborg and more Justice League heroes were set to appear in the Flashpoint movie.

The article also states that Warner Bros. has scheduled Flashpoint for a 2020 release, which gives many fans hope that the project has found its feet. In many ways, it looks like The Flash movie is finally moving forward and in a good direction. It’s no secret that the film had a difficult time in development hell, but with a new script and Wonder Woman’s inclusion, things are starting to look up.

It’s worth noting that this report hasn’t been confirmed by Warner Bros. and should currently be regarded as a rumour. Hopefully, as The Flash movie develops, we’ll hear about more additions to the cast.

‘Avengers’ #10 A Dull Distraction From An Otherwise Great Run

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Mark Waid and Mike Del Mundo take a break from their stellar Avengers run to tell a story about Secret Empire‘s Hydra Avengers.

Avengers 10 cvr

***SPOILERS LIE AHEAD***

Taking a break from your regularly scheduled Avengers fun, issue #10 focuses solely on Captain Hydra’s goon squad. While investigating a disturbance with the planetary shield around Earth, the team finds a giant squid monster and destroys it.

This is an instance where halting the ongoing series for a tie-in was intrusive. Secret Empire has been mostly great, and so has Waid’s run on Avengers. What this ends up being is a forced distraction from something that was really clicking.

Del Mundo has been doing wonderful work on the title, this issue was a step back. His art style didn’t take to certain characters as well as the regular cast. Odinson and Octavius were particularly jarring. The whole issue just seems rushed for Del Mundo’s standards.

Avengers 10 vision

Vision is unaffected, he still sings in Del Mundo’s art and is the most compelling of the team from a narrative standpoint. That comes as no surprise to those who have been reading the series already.

Deadpool also looks great despite every bit of dialogue being overly irritating. It’s satisfying how unbearable Ock finds Wade, but not worth the eye-roll inducing dialogue.

I’m no Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice apologist, but how many unfunny jokes can Marvel writers make about “Martha”?

Avengers 10 Martha

It’s worth noting that through all the appearances this team of Hydra Avengers has made throughout the event, nobody has found anything for Black Ant to do. It makes me wonder why he’s even on the team. Even when he utilizes his one skill, shrinking inside the enemy, he proves to be utterly useless.

For the most part, Secret Empire tie-ins have been surprisingly enjoyable and relevant. The biggest problem with this one is the same issue plaguing the other lackluster issues. Tie-in issues need to progress the story in the background, not continuously go to the beginning and show more about a planetary shield.

Avengers 10 mess

At least this is a quick read. I imagine the creative team wanted to get through it as fast as readers will. It’s a shame sometimes when creators are forced to shove an event into their book that was otherwise great. Hopefully this issue doesn’t defer people from reading the rest of Avengers.

‘All-New Guardians Of The Galaxy’ #7, Drax Addresses His Pacifism

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The hits keep on coming with Gerry Duggan and his rotating team of artists. All-New Guardians Of The Galaxy #7 came out this week and reveals why Drax has become a pacifist.

GOTG 7 cvr

***SPOILERS LIE AHEAD***

All-New Guardians Of The Galaxy has easily been of the best Marvel titles since the recent relaunch. Following Brian Michael Bendis’ underwhelming run with the team, Duggan came in and knocked it out of the park immediately.

One of the things that was different from the start was Drax and his new life as a pacifist. “The Destroyer” has sheathed his famous death blades. All-New GOTG #7 sees Drax bear his soul and reveal to Gamora the reason behind this decision.

Greg Smallwood, from the recent Moon Knight masterpiece with Jeff Lemire, provides the art this time. His efforts here need to earn him more cosmic Marvel work. Not only his pencils, but his coloring as well is astronomically pleasing.

Drax aliensGuardians has been one of the only current titles to rotate artists without severely hurting itself. Every artist seems to be handed the appropriate script that matches their style. It’s impressive and appreciated.

This is a very different, but still effective, characterization of Drax. Seeing him open up to his teammate, and what the story entails, adds more depth to him than ever before. Duggan’a run is still not on the level of Abnett/Lanning, but he’s also trying and succeeding in doing something different. This is damn good Guardians.

Drax Gamora meditate

Even though this iteration of the team is still emulating the vibe of the movies, Duggan refused to let Drax become a one-note character. He’s been taking his time and getting intimate with the members of the team one at a time, deepening the reader’s connection with each of them.

Having this delicate story unfold and tying it into Gamora’s similar issue and arc by the end was a nice touch. The trajectory this plot is on promises to be classic cosmic goodness!

Drax punchDuggan has the ability with GOTG to deliver an emotionally fulfilling experience. He exposes the heart of these heroes that’s hiding underneath the rough exterior, sprinkling in well executed and perfectly timed jokes. The humor hits hard in this issue because it’s tasteful and strikes when you least expect it.

Marvel has something special with these characters again, they need to make sure they don’t lose it again. Where else could you get what is probably the greatest panel in Guardians Of The Galaxy comic book history?
