HOW TO KEEP A MUMMY: Three Episode Report

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Is How To Keep A Mummy adorable enough to watch or is it too cute for its own good? Welcome to three episode report. Here, an anime series from the new season is given three episodes to prove it is good enough for the audience to continue watching to the end. Today’s series up for the Pass/Fail report is How To Keep A Mummy.

Summary

Sora Kashiwagi always gets sent weird and dangerous creatures from his father’s expeditions. When a large coffin comes to his house, Sora fears the worst. When he opens it up, he finds a mummy so small it can fit in the palm of his hand. Naming it Mii-kun, Sora soon finds big things come in small packages.

Positive

The biggest advantage this series has is just how cute Mii-kun is. He’s an adorable little Mummy and this is before any of the other adorable creatures which will be introduced which have already been featured in the opening.

The comedy is also good at perfect level. Episodes are filled with little gags which help to keep the mood light and fluffy. No jokes seem forced and everything finds a way of blending together perfectly.

The opening and closing are very catchy. Especially the ending which features a very elaborate dance number. It won’t be surprising to see more extreme fans of this series performing the full dance on YouTube in the future.

How to keep a mummy

Negative

This is not exactly the most essential anime to in terms of content. There are no epic stakes or character development which will be present. There is also a pretty good chance Mii-kun will not unlock some hidden power in the future, become an ancient pharaoh of immense strength, and engaged in battle with a dark force. It’s banking on you wanting to enjoy something cute but if you are looking for more you are going to have to search elsewhere.

Grade

This series PASSES with flying colors. A cute little show which is the perfect thing to start the first anime season of 2017. Fun if you catch it but you won’t be out of luck if you let it slip through your fingers. If you like cute shows this one is perfect for you.

How To Keep A Mummy is streaming on Crunchyroll.

Team USA Sporting MARVEL-Inspired Unis at Winter Olympics

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, are incredibly exciting this year. A lot of the top stories are coming by way of Team USA, which recently tallied its 100th all-time medal in the world games.

The other reason why there is a lot of excitement, the uniforms. That’s right, members of the US Olympic Ski and Snowboard Team have been competing in uniforms inspired by both Captain America and Captain Marvel.

If there is a group of people on this planet that possess superpowers, it is Olympic skiers. They are literally flying through the air, zipping down mountains and pulling off death-defying tricks. So, it would make sense as to why official team supplier, Spyder, would team with Marvel.

The Marvel-inspired uniforms actually debuted at the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in St. Moritz, Switzerland, last year, but are drawing significantly more attention at the Winter Olympics this year as the event draws more in viewership.

The Olympics began on Wednesday, Feb. 7, with the Alpine Skiing event having taken place on Monday, Feb. 12, but the games run through Sunday, Feb. 25, so there is still plenty of time to see some high-flying awesomeness!

Make sure to tune in to see the superheroes in action! Stay updated with the official schedule and results HERE and you can track all the medals won HERE.

Top 5 Actresses Who Could Play KITTY PRYDE

Monkeys Fighting Robots

With the news dropping of Brian Michael Bendis and Tim Miller pairing up to develop a Kitty Pryde solo film, let’s make some predictions on who could be cast in the titular role.

5ANNA KENDRICK

Anna Kendrick already made it clear that she’s ready to star in her own comic book feature, as she expressed extreme interest in the role of Squirrel Girl. However, that role has already been filled by Stranger ThingsShannon Purser. Could Kitty Pryde be her chance to join the X-Men on the big screen?

Kendrick has proven that she can play a variety of roles.  She’s done teen angst, dramedies, musicals, and voiced animated characters. She’s also demonstrated that she can carry a lead role in the success of Pitch Perfect, which was a sleeper hit, even though its sequels went downhill.

4ALEXIS BLEDEL

Let us not forget that our sweet, smart “Rory Gilmore” once kicked some ass in the neo-noir crime thriller Sin CityAlexis Bledel played a gun-wielding prostitute, which is a far cry from the role with which she became a household name for in Gilmore Girls.

She’s currently on the Hulu series The Handmaidens Tale and was confirmed as a cast regular for the show’s second season.

3HAILEE STEINFELD

Multitalented Hailee Steinfeld broke into Hollywood at the age of 13 with her Oscar-nominated role in True Grit, and she hasn’t looked back. Her role in the Pitch Perfect series also helped boost her music career, which has landed her as high as #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for her song “Starving.”

Steinfeld is currently filming the Transformers prequel film Bumblebee: The Movie, which is set to be released in late 2018. Perhaps she can get some battle tips from movie costar John Cena.

2KAREN GILLAN

Karen Gillan is no stranger to the Marvel movie world. She’s “Nebula” in Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, and will soon appear in Avengers: Infinity War.  She’s also still reeling from the success of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.

Marvel is notorious for using the same actors as different characters. Josh Brolin, Ryan Reynolds, and Chris Evans have all appeared in different Marvel worlds, and it doesn’t deter from their film presence. With “Nebula’s” extensive makeup, most moviegoers would never realize that they’re seeing the same actress in a new Marvel role.

1EMILY KINNEY

After her character’s death on The Walking Dead, Emily Kinney continued to be a powerhouse on comic book television with guest roles on both Flash and Arrow.

As “Beth” on The Walking Dead, she stepped up when she needed to.  She took care of her injured father, she tended to newborn “Judith,” and handled a machine gun like it was nothing. She can hold her own, and that’s what Kitty Pryde will need to do in this film.

Honorable Mention: ROWAN BLANCHARD

Rowan Blanchard

If the Kitty Pryde film will stay true to the story from issue 143, as the working title suggests, Pryde should only be about 15 years old. A young actress may have a tough time spearheading a role of this magnitude, so I doubt they’ll cast someone so young. But, if they do, Rowan Blanchard would be my pick.

Girl Meets World’s “Riley Matthews” was a character that was coming into her own, much like the actress was doing in real life. She’s a public activist for feminism, gender equality, and human rights. With that kind of confidence, it may be time for her to join the superhero world.

Who would you like to see cast as Kitty Pryde? Do you agree with my choices?  Let me know!

Review: BLACK PANTHER Is Everything The Fans Wanted And So Much More

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Black Panther will redefine societal notions of what constitutes a terrific comic book film. In the past, audiences were asked to suspend all sense of reality while being wildly entertained as either The Avengers swooped in once again to save the day or Deadpool seemingly defying the odds while making a sexual reference about god knows what. Coogler’s latest release seemingly mixes the lore of Wakanda with the harsh realities of our world. Black Panther’s mission isn’t to set up the next film but to show the ripple of effects isolationism has and how compassion can impact the world. It indeed is a message which resonates loudly in 2018.

Black Panther

The story picks up right after the events surrounding Avengers: Civil War.The king is dead, and T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) is set to be named ruler of Wakanda. Some members of the five tribes which make up this fictional African nation are skeptical he’s ready to lead but are willing to go along with the ceremony for the sake of peace. T’Challa seeks to continue his father’s consistency (during his reign) and wants to shield Wakanda from the prying eyes of the world. His ex-girlfriend (played by Lupita Nyong’o) is very much against this and feels the technology would positively affect society. The king’s security forces alert T’Challa his country’s most wanted fugitive, Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis) has pulled off an elaborate heist and is set to sell the Vibranium weapon on the black market. This moment starts a chain of events leading to the Eric Killmonger’s (Micheal B. Jordan), who not only is Wakanda’s greatest threat but might just have a connection to the king’s father.

Seeing Boseman in the lead role and actually be featured was a refreshing change of pace after what happened during Marshall. His performance is fantastic and at times quite layered. We all are witness to T’Challa’s growing pains during his first days as ruler which only increases the realism in his portrayal. There’s also a sense of sadness which drives him and at times is his undoing. Coogler and Joe Robert Cole’s screenplay is a refreshing change of pace from the typical Marvel film. While they do rely on some of the elements of past films, the writers weren’t afraid to allow this narrative to build which makes the payoff all the more satisfying.

Black Panther HD images

Perhaps Coogler’s most significant move was surrounding Boseman and Jordan with such a fantastic supporting cast. Danai Gurira, Angela Bassett, Letitia Wright, and Forest Whitaker round out a tremendous supporting cast, and all give solid performances. However, Jordan’s performance is what stood out to me most of all. His portrayal of the incredibly flawed antagonist was adrenaline-inducing and poignant as well. Killmonger doesn’t represent just a threat to the throne, but he’s symbolic of the people who Wakanda has sought to isolate itself from for years. At some point, this pattern of behavior has repercussions.

Black Panther HD images

Rachel Morrison’s cinematography enhanced the stunning action sequences in South Korea. Morrison was able to make use of the location’s natural neon lighting while always keeping the lens centric on the action. The result is the metal of the car is illuminated instantly as the car crashes which looks exceptionally cool. Hannah Beachler’s sparkling production design shows the dichotomy of Wakanda.

Black Panther HD images

Very rarely do releases exceed the hype surrounding them, but Black Panther is the exception. Just as Deadpool took the world by storm in February of 2016, this release will crush most films at the box-office until further notice. Black Panther‘s mixture of social commentary and Marvel badassery make this film special. A movie like this demands to be seen in theaters.

Review: BLACK PANTHER’s Rushed Ending Hinders A Great Comic Book Film

Monkeys Fighting Robots

With Black Panther, Ryan Coogler builds a world far superior to anything we’ve seen previously in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a world of vibrant colors and texture; but then a few poorly placed, familiar MCU tropes water down an otherwise rousing tale.

Black Panther is one of the first timely superhero films that asks grander scale questions that will challenge the casual fan. As well as the first half is written, Coogler and Joe Robert Cole lose the emotional intensity in the second half as the CGI battles take over the film and pushes the script and actors to the side.

With the Black Panther character established the focus moved toward the villain, and developing Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger origin. This helped the film tremendously and allows the audience to build a sort of compassion for Killmonger and his warped journey. He is the most ruthless villain in the MCU, something that has been lacking in the Universe thus far, and the wildly unpredictable performance from Jordan keeps everything appropriately off kilter.

Letitia Wright as Shuri, T’Challa’s younger sister and tech genius, steals the show with her wit. Wright brings an energy to the screen that elevates scenes that could have otherwise been nothing more than bland expository filler. Shuri will definitely be a character to watch in Avengers: Infinity War. Where Wright steals the show, Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue puts on a clinic when it comes to crazy. Serkis is already an underrated actor who transforms into every character he plays (often times quite literally transforming into them on the screen) and give maximum effort. You are only given a taste of his brilliance in Black Panther. Hopefully, some deleted scenes make the DVD extras.

As we break down the final act of the film there could be spoilers ahead.

The walking dead

Where the film doesn’t deliver is in the hero’s journey. The film rushes to the final fight without the essential character development needed to anchor the audience. Chadwick Boseman is great as T’Challa, demanding of our attention and praise, but we are robbed of a Black Panther resurrection and/or training montage. This was a missed opportunity; if Coogler had added the blood, sweat, and tears to this finale the way he did to the overall film, it could have pushed this over the top, beyond great superhero movie to an early contender for the best of 2018.

We want to see our heroes broken, then pick themselves up out of the mud, dust themselves off, and get back to work to be the best. This is the inspiring part of the film, which boggles my mind that Coogler didn’t include it after he just worked on Creed.

Black Panther is the 18th film in the MCU franchise, and Kevin Feige has not been able to fix the one issue that has plagued the Marvel films since Iron Man: fighting a doppelganger of your hero. Iron Man fights another Iron Man, Hulk fights another Hulk, Ant-Man fights another Ant-Man, and now, in the final fight, Black Panther fights another Black Panther. With all the brilliant filmmakers that Disney has on speed-dial, no one could come up with a better idea? That’s just lazy.

I said this with Marvel’s The Avengers and I will say again for Black Panther, when Coogler has a chance to given Jordan or Boseman an Oscar-winning speech or line during the battle, Coogler like Whedon doesn’t take his shot and plays it safe. Is Black Panther a good movie, yes. Could it have been an epic film, absolutely.

Definitely stick around for the mid-credits and post-credit scenes.

Review: KICK-ASS Returns! But Who is Under The Mask and Why?

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. return to one of their biggest hits in Image Comics’ Kick-Ass #1, a brand new volume that brings us a fresh story and new face under the mask.Kick-Ass

Kick-Ass #1
Written by: Mark Millar
Art by: John Romita Jr.
Colors and Digital Inks by: Peter Steigerwald
Letters by: John Workman

Kick-Ass Created by: Mark Millar & John Romita Jr.

KICK-ASS IS BACK—ready to wipe out the city’s criminal lowlives, destroy its gangs, and save its communities from decay. But there’s a new face beneath the old mask, a new figure wearing that famous green and yellow spandex. Who is this new vigilante superhero? Who can fill Dave Lizewski’s shoes? WHO IS THE NEW KICK-ASS?

Kick-Ass
Patience unmasked!

Writing

Kick-Ass #1 begins in media res, as someone in the familiar green diving suit is taken before a bunch of scary criminals. Millar wastes no time with this narrative, as the story quickly flashes back to give us information on our new protagonist, Patience. In a well-executed action sequence set in Afghanistan, we learn not only what Patience is capable of, but what brought her back home to Albuquerque, New Mexico as well. The issue also sets up her current situation and what exactly led Patience to put on a superhero suit (no spoilers, but let’s just say her some of her reasons are personal and do not seem so altruistic at the moment). Also Patience, unlike original Kick-Ass Dave Lizewski, is an adult (a single mother actually), a woman and a person of color; all of which does a lot to change up the dynamic of the character.

Kick-Ass
Kicking ass indeed!

Millar has always excelled at this kind of tight, economical and well-paced storytelling. It’s cinematic and immensely entertaining too. He is also crafty enough to leave out information to keep us intrigued. This is obviously the same world as prior Kick-Ass books, but so far no direct connection has been revealed.

Art

The art here is just fantastic. John Romta Jr. has always been one of the greats, but something about his work with Millar (particularly in Kick-Ass) really unleashes, energizes, and intensifies his line work. The fight sequences hit hard, with the punches and kicks almost genuinely felt.  At the same time, the art here is a bit more polished than in previous Kick-Ass stories, which helps set it apart as a new chapter. This is one of the sleekest looking Romita books I have seen.

Kick-Ass
Vulgar display of power!

Peter Steigerwald digital inks and colors also bring a lot of life and energy themselves. The inking and coloring add a ton of weight to the art, giving it a look that is both a bit ‘grimy’ yet still clean and slick.

Conclusion

Kick-Ass #1 is a welcomed return. If you loved the world and style in these comics, this new volume seems like a good continuation. Millar and Romita Jr. together at the very least always offer a kinetic and fun comic book reading experience. The storytelling is strong and you’ll want to learn more about Patience and her plight at the end of this issue.
