One Limb Left: Top Five Controllers For Handicapped Gamers

Monkeys Fighting Robots

When it comes to deciding which gaming console to buy, there are a few factors that go into my decision.  It has to have a massive library that includes numerous first-party titles.  While some gamers prefer Gears of War and Halo, my decision to buy a PlayStation 4 involved two things.  Being able to play The Last of Us, Uncharted, and Tomb Raider, and how the controller felt in my hand.

Related – How I As A Gamer With One Arm Play Video Games

gamers

Having to use the Wii Remote and the nunchuck at the same time was something I just could not do.  The same goes for VR.  There is no way for me to comfortably use the controllers and successfully navigate and complete the games available for it.  That’s after I somehow wrap my head around the insane price for a headset.

Before I reveal my list from five to one, let me just say this.  Every physical disability is different, and people play video games in different ways.  What is best for me likely won’t be the best for someone who is missing more of their arm than me, has no arms, cerebral palsy, and/or other disabilities.  However, if you’re someone who is able-bodied, I think we can both agree, The Duke controller for Xbox sucks.

5.  Nintendo 64

gamers

The hilt-like centerpiece allows the player to grip the controller tightly.  For gamers who use their feet to play, the two prongs on the side give the controller balance and stability,  preventing it from rolling over.  Also, its design allows lower-limb players freedom in not having to pick it up and hold it.  While it does have a lot of buttons, the B, and A are mostly used.

With the yellow C-buttons used primarily for camera adjusting and the Z-Trigger underneath the joystick used for mostly special moves.  The controller’s only fault is its joystick, but only when used aggressively.  One game of tug of war in Mario Party and your palm or foot will look like Joe Pesci’s hand in Home Alone.

4.  Super Nintendo

gamers

The Super Nintendo’s controller is great for a variety of reasons.  While it cannot be grabbed like the hilt of a Nintendo 64 controller, its sides fit in-between your index finger and thumb, as well as the curves of your feet.  The D-Pad is sturdy, making controlling characters easy and not frustrating.  If you’re someone who has one arm, this controller is one that sits very well on your lap due to its flat bottom and no bottom triggers.

3. Xbox One

gamers

The reason this controller is ranked higher than the Super Nintendo’s is due to how it is designed to fit in your hand, though it is a bit bulkier and heavier than a PlayStation 4 controller.  The joysticks are sturdy and not stiff, and the D-Pad is a bit loose but not in a bad way.

2.  PlayStation 4

gamers

Lighter, thinner, and better-textured joysticks.  The PlayStation 4’s controller fits like a glove in my hand.  Its left side allows my index finger to wrap around it perfectly.  I also love the way the right trigger hugs my stub and has a softer, more cushioned spring-like function.

Also, the joysticks’ texture massages my stub and finger as I use them.  While I do like the one-piece D-Pad’s that many consoles are equipped with, I like the PlayStation 4’s arrow design better.  Simply because I like the individual feel of each arrow, as it makes me feel more in control of the character(s).

1.  NES Advantage

gamers

It has the word advantage in the name, so how could it not be number one?  Name aside what makes the NES Advantage controller the best one for handicapped gamers is its simplicity.  No triggers, no high number of buttons, just a joystick and two giant red buttons for action.  When I first got into gaming at a very young age, this was my first controller. Yes, I did have a regular NES controller, but the Advantage’s huge size allowed it to sit perfectly on my lap.

While its joystick not only provides an arcade feel, it made it easier for me to concentrate on the game itself and not what direction I was pressing.  Plus it’s something that easily accommodates many gamers with disabilities.  You can easily move the joystick with your arm (pending its length) or feet, and its simple amount of buttons makes performing actions easy.  The less thinking that has to go into how someone with a disability has to rig a controller setup, the better.  What are some of your favorite controllers?

Is FOX’s X-Men Universe Being Retrofitted For The MCU?

Monkeys Fighting Robots

In sports, when a player is about to be traded to another team, the player in question sits on the bench to avoid injury. This could be the case for delays of X-Men: Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants by 20th Century Fox.

The Dark Phoenix has been pushed to February 14, 2019, and The New Mutants has been pushed to August 2, 2019, according to a report by Deadline published Monday night. The move could mean two things: one, FOX has no confidence in these two films and is looking for a softer release date to recover some of the film budgets back; or two, Disney asked FOX to pushed the dates so the movies could be under the Marvel Cinematic Universe banner.

Disney is set to purchase 20th Century Fox for $52.4-billion, the deal is waiting for approvals from regulators in Washington and in other countries. The purchase should be finalized sometime in 2019.

The New Mutants could easily be reworked with little to no reshoots to fit in the MCU. All you have to do is watch a few episodes of Runaways, and it’s easy to see how you fit them in the universe. Since The New Mutants is a horror film with mutants, a quick mention of Tony Stark or the Super Soldier Serum is all that is needed to link the film.

The Dark Phoenix, on the other hand, would require some creativity and reshoots, but all that could happen at the end of the film. UPDATE: Dark Phoenix is in need of multiple weeks worth of reshoots to change significant story points in the film, according to a source via Comicbook.com.

Jean Grey is one of the most powerful mutants in the world; it is plausible that her powers are so great that Jean can alter the timeline and/or cross over into the MCU. The introduction of Cable in Deadpool 2 creates the ability to jump through time, and that introduces alternate timelines. Hence the MCU and the X-Men separate film universes.

The Scarlet Witch is the ultimate powerhouse who could alter reality with one word, but 20th Century Fox doesn’t have a version of her in the X-Men films, yet. Maybe Evan Peters can find his sister in Dark Phoenix.

Deadpool 2 could break the internet if it is revealed at the end Cable and Deadpool found the MCU.

Marvel Studios already has experience introducing a major character midway through a story arc and has no problem quickly rebooting a franchise. Spider-Man: Homecoming was well received by critics and fans.

Why do you think 20th Century Fox pushed back the two X-Men films? Comment below.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix is written and directed by Simon Kinberg, stars Sophie Turner, Jennifer Lawrence, Tye Sheridan, Jessica Chastain, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Alexandra Shipp, Nicholas Hoult, Evan Peters, and Kodi Smit-McPhee.

The New Mutants is directed by Josh Boone, from a screenplay he and Knate Lee wrote. The film stars Anna Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Alice Braga, Charlie Heaton, Happy Anderson, Henry Zaga, Blu Hunt, and Colbi Gannett.

GRAVITY FALLS Creator Announces Full Series Box Set

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Fans of Gravity Falls can now own the full series in a brand new box set. Series creator Alex Hirsch tweeted that the DVD/Blu-Ray box set is now available for pre-order. Alex Hirsh teased the announcement Monday night, with some doodles and cheeky photoshops. Today, Hirsch broke the news that the collector’s edition box set would come out this summer.

The box set comes from pop culture store Shout! Factory. The box set will have all 40 episodes of the phenomenal Disney animated series. Currently, the box set is available to pre-order for $47.97. Once the box set is available, it seems the price will rise to $59.97.

“For those who don’t know, Disney basically hasn’t authorized a full DVD for ANY series since like, Gummi Bears,” Hirsh tweeted. “This thing existing is a miracle on the level of finding Walt Disney’s frozen head or discovering the secret genetically engineered Mickey they’ve hidden under ToonTown.”

This isn’t the only new Gravity Falls release since the show ended. In fact, this is the second Gravity Falls project available to purchase on July 24th. A graphic novel was announced in 2017. Gravity Falls: Lost Legends will include 4 new adventures in the Gravity Falls universe. Lost Legends, like the series box set, is available for pre-order now. Additionally, Hirsch is attached as a screenwriter to the upcoming Detective Pikachu film.

Disney has also picked up two shows from former Gravity Falls team members. Matt Braly, a director and storyboard artist, has created the new series Amphibia. Dana Terrace, a storyboard artist and director for Ducktales, is the creator of The Owl House. Fans thirsting for a new cartoon should definitely check these out.

Review: ISLE OF DOGS Is Beautiful, Charming, And Very Funny

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Isle of Dogs is Wes Anderson’s latest film, and it’s a beautiful, funny, and charming movie for all dog lovers.

When a dog flu virus hits Megasaki City, Japan, all canines are banished to “Trash Island” to live in isolation. But one young boy refuses to give up on his pet friend, and heads to the island to find him.

Anderson has a style all his own, and it’s difficult to put into words. Is it quirky? Is it deadpan? Hipster? It’s all those things and so much more. It’s simply “Wes Anderson” at this point, and Isle of Dogs is also very much wonderfully done in that style.

Even the animation feels unique to Anderson. It’s stop-motion mixed with a little 2D animation here and there, and there’s an elegant charm to it. It’s beautiful, and it intensifies all of the emotional, tear-jerking moments.

The voice cast is packed with big names. From Bill Murray to Ed Norton to Bryan Cranston to Jeff Goldblum, the list goes on and on. Their performances are all pretty subtle, yet brilliant. It’s very deadpan; most of the emotion comes less from the delivery and more from what they’re actually saying and the accompanying animation. But that deadpan deliver is what sells the majority of the film’s comedy; Dogs is hilarious for those of us with a certain sense of humor.

isle of dogs

The story is by Anderson, Roman Coppola, Jason Schwartzman, and Kunichi Nomura, with a screenplay by Anderson, and it’s hard to find a flaw in it. The team does an excellent job in keeping everything tight; there’s almost no fat to this film. Each frame deserves your full attention in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-something fashion, which keeps the pace high, along with your interest level. And the whole movie’s told from the point of view of the dogs, an interesting twist that creates a strong emotional attachment in the audience (unless you’re more of a cat person).

If you’re a Wes Anderson fan, or a dog lover, you’re going to love Isle of Dogs. It’ll make you laugh, it’ll make you cry, and it’ll make you hug the crap out of your own dog when you get home from the theater.

Dan Slott’s 5 Best SPIDER-MAN Stories

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Dan Slott’s decade on Amazing Spider-Man is coming to an end next month. Before he “Goes Down Swinging” and takes over Invincible Iron Man, we take a look at some of our favorite stories from ten years of Slott on ASM.

“A Blind Eye/Run Goblin, Run” (Superior Spider-Man #14-16)

Dan Slott Superior

All of Dan Slott’s run on Superior is some of his finest and boldest work. It’s one of the best examples of bad guy taking over for good guy that we’ve seen so many times throughout comic book history. Initially met with death threats, Scott delivered the Spidey comic you didn’t know you needed.

It was at this point in the series that Slott went all-in on Doc Ock being Spider-Man. Octavius ordered an army of minions, turned The Raft into his own Spider-Island base of operations, giant spider-tanks, and covered the city in his spider-bot drone patrols. He also fully redesigned the Spidey suit, complete with four mechanical legs on his back. This is when the series solidified itself into Spider-Man history.

This was also when Norman Osborn and his underground Goblin Nation really started to take shape behind Spidey’s back.

“Spider-Verse” (Amazing Spider-Man #9-15)

Things may have gotten out of hand with way too many Spider-People running around the 616, but the story that started it all was a major triumph of fun. Slott’s story about Morlun and his family chasing down all the Spider-Totems across the multiverse is spectacular.

Getting all the different Spider-People together to fight for their lives across time and space is an undeniably fun team assembly. This is the event that gave us Spider-Gwen, Spider-Punk, Assassin Spidey, and countless others. It’s definitely Hasbro’s favorite story of all-time because they’ve been pumping out tons of different Spidey toys ever since.

The ending may have fizzled out a bit, but goddamn was this a fun ride. We also got to see the final showdown between Peter (in his own body) and Superior Spidey.

“Big Time” (Amazing Spider-Man #648-651)

This was a big moment for Slott’s ASM, Pete finally had things going right for him. Landing a job at Horizon Labs, being an Avenger, having a better handle on his love life and time management. For anyone looking to get back into modern Spidey comics, this is always the best starting point.

“Big Time” has also the first big story for Phil Urich as Hobgoblin, one of the best new villains in Slott’s tenure. His redesign, along with that beautifully neon stealth Spidey suit gave the series a fresh set of visuals to go along with the new era for Peter Parker.

“Danger Zone” (Amazing Spider-Man #695-697)

Hobgoblin versus Hobgoblin! Roderick Kingsley comes back to challenge the newbie running around in his Goblin persona. Dan Slott definitely had a sweet spot for the Hobgoblin, there’s no shortage of pumpkin bombs throughout his ten years on the title.

This story is special in that it brought Kingsley back into the picture and gave Urich a more prominent and effective role. At the end of this arc, Kingsley starts his villain franchising business. He lets Phil continue as the Hobgoblin if he pays him a portion of his earnings. If he fails to meet these requirements, the punishment is of course death.

This short arc is a modern favorite for any Hobgoblin fan. It’s an underrated example of Slott getting creative with his cast of characters.

“Spider-Island” (Amazing Spider-Man #666-673)

The Jackal is one of the best Spidey villains of all-time, despite being the source of all the cloning nonsense that went way too far. Slott delivers one of the biggest and best stories with the furry, green mad-scientist at the center of it all.

“Spider-Island” saw the entire island of Manhattan affected by the Jackal, giving every ordinary citizen Spider-Man’s powers. It’s pure chaos for our favorite wall-crawler, especially when those citizens start turning into spider monsters. This huge story impacted continuity long after it’s completion.

With J. Jonah Jameson having recently been elected Mayor of NY, this was an entertaining stress test as he now had an entire island full of “menaces.” The aftermath of this story also brought fan-favorite Kaine back into the picture and spawned his underrated Scarlet Spider series.

What are YOUR favorite Dan Slott stories from his decade on Amazing Spider-Man?

CLOAK AND DAGGER TV Show Might Cross Over With RUNAWAYS

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The two young adult Marvel shows may have a crossover in the future. Cloak and Dagger, the first Marvel series on Freeform, starts its first season this summer. Apparently, the duo exists within the same universe as the gritty Netflix heroes, like Daredevil and Jessica Jones. But the show runner’s plans for a potential crossover involve Hulu’s Runaways.

Joe Pokaski, the showrunner, talked about his plans at WonderCon this weekend. He’s already thinking about season two, and those ideas involve Marvel’s Runaways.

“I mean, it was really important for the first season to really establish Tandy and Tyrone, even as people before they become superheroes. But I’m a big fan of what Josh [Schwartz] and Stephanie [Savage] did on Runaways and we’re always talking about when do we get to do our crossover. There’s probably 400 lawyers in the way… I’m excited for however Cloak & Dagger can play in the universe.”

So obviously, this planned crossover is far from set in stone. But this potential team-up is definitely exciting. Fans of Marvel comics know that the two teams crossed paths back in the day. The teams could have their own Defenders-style team-up event. Runaways has been picked up for a second season, so the blueprint for success exists. Maybe this team-up could incorporate the currently network-less New Warriors in the future.

Cloak and Dagger premieres on June 7th. Marvel’s Runaways first season is all available on Hulu. The second season will probably come out late 2018.

New CAPTAIN MARVEL Details Reveal The Return Of Agent Coulson

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Marvel has announced the start of production on the upcoming Captain Marvel with a press release that reveals new details about the film. The most significant information of which is that multiple MCU veterans are set to make an appearance in the Brie Larson led flick.

Current Agents of Shield and former MCU fan-favorite actor Clark Gregg is set to reprise his role as Agent Phil Coulson. Gregg hasn’t appeared in an MCU film since his character was killed at the hands of Loki in 2012s The Avengers. Since Captain Marvel takes place in the 1990s, Marvel saw it as a prime opportunity to bring back everyone’s favorite Shield agent.

Another returning character will be that of Ronan the Accuser, played by Lee Pace. Ronan you’ll remember was the main villain of Guardians of the Galaxy in which much like Coulson he was also killed off. Ronan is, of course, a Kree meaning he is a member of the same race that has a hand in granting Carol Danvers her powers. Along with Pace, Djimon Hounsou will return as Korath the Pursuer who also first appeared in GOTG.

You can check out the full cast list below:

The film stars Academy Award winner Brie Larson (“Room,” “Kong: Skull Island”), Samuel L. Jackson (Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “The Hateful Eight”), Ben Mendelsohn (“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” “Ready Player One”), Djimon Hounsou (“Blood Diamond,” Marvel Studios’ “Guardians of the Galaxy”), Lee Pace (“The Book of Henry,” Marvel Studios’ “Guardians of the Galaxy”), Lashana Lynch (“Brotherhood,” “Fast Girls”), Gemma Chan (“Humans,” “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”), Algenis Perez Soto (“Sambá,” “Sugar”), Rune Temte (“Eddie The Eagle,” “The Last Kingdom”), McKenna Grace (“I, Tonya,” “Gifted”), with Clark Gregg (“Live by Night,” “Marvel’s The Avengers”), and Jude Law (“Spy,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel”).

Along with the casting news, a new plot synopsis was released detailing where we see Captain Marvel take the character of Carol Danvers:

The story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Donald Glover’s Deadpool Series Has Been Dropped by FX

Monkeys Fighting Robots

It was reported back in May that Deadpool would be getting an animated series on FXX. Donald and Stephen Glover, the team behind Atlanta, were going to create the show. The show was also going to feature animation from Floyd County, the team behind Archer. The creative combination was exciting, but unfortunately, we’ll never know how good it could’ve been. Variety reported on Saturday that the show was dropped due to “creative differences.”

FX confirmed that the series was no longer happening. “Due to creative differences, FX, Donald Glover, Stephen Glover and Marvel Television have agreed to part ways on Marvel’s ‘Deadpool’ animated series, FX will no longer be involved with the project,” FX said. “FX and Marvel have an ongoing relationship through our partnership on ‘Legion,’ which will continue.”

Deadpool

The series was set to premiere sometime this year. However, the series was not in active production, and reportedly didn’t have a single script written. Whether another Deadpool series will happen remains to be seen. It’s still possible that some combination of these forces will try to get the series going in the future.

Thankfully, it’s not as if Donald Glover or Deadpool are disappearing from the world. Glover’s Atlanta is currently on its second season. Donald Glover will also play young Lando Calrissian in the upcoming Star Wars film Solo. Meanwhile, the live-action film Deadpool 2 hits theaters May 18th. Even Archer returns with a new season in April.

Gina Rodriguez Will Play Carmen Sandiego For Netflix Film and TV Show

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Netflix has locked down Gina Rodriguez to play Carmen Sandiego. The streaming service has just locked down the rights for a live-action feature for the character. Netflix has previously announced that they will make a Carmen Sandiego animated series. This is the second Carmen Sandiego project that Netflix and Rodriguez will be working on.

Gina Rodriguez will produce the film, along with starring in it. Rodriguez is mostly known for her role in Jane the Virgin, which she has won a Golden Globe for. She is also one of the stars of Annihilation, the recent film from the Ex Machina director. She’s also starring in the upcoming Miss Bala remake, and the animated film Small Foot.

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing owns of the Carmen Sandiego property. A line of books from HMH featuring Carmen will launch in 2019 timed to the series release.

While both projects have been announced, there is no director or writers attached to either.

Advance Review: BLACK HAMMER: AGE OF DOOM #1 – New Title, Still Excellent

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The main Black Hammer series returns April 18th with Black Hammer: Age of Doom #1, and it’s even more gloriously weird than fans are used to.

The new “season” is again written by Jeff Lemire, with art by Dean Ormston, colors by Dave Stewart, and letters by Todd Klein, and it picks up right where season one left off. Lucy Weber has become the new Black Hammer, and she claims to have solved the mystery of where the heroes are and how they can get home.

And then, in true Black Hammer fashion, shit gets crazy.

Lemire has taken everything great about the series and cranked it up to eleven. He takes the story to even weirder places, and builds this universe out even further. We’re fourteen issues in and still glued to every page, wondering what’s going to happen next. That’s pure talent on Lemire’s part, to keep his audience engaged that strongly. And of course, in addition to creating an engaging story, there’s Jeff’s greatest strength: his ability to write interesting, complex characters. Each one of the heroes has a strong personality of their own, along with deep emotional baggage. Six unique, compelling characters; six unique, compelling reasons to keep reading.

Meanwhile, Dean Ormston and Dave Stewart are still crushing it. Their combined artwork is the perfect aesthetic for this world, and they keep getting better with each issue. Ormston’s characters and settings feel familiar, yet slightly off, mirroring the plot and making it feel even creepier. All of the emotion that Lemire writes into the heroes is amplified ten-fold by the art team, along with Todd Klein’s powerful lettering. And now that the story is going to even stranger places, the whole team will have the chance to really get crazy and try new things. We get a taste of that in this issue, and it’s delicious.

If you love Black Hammer, you’re going to love Age of Doom. It takes a great story to even greater heights, raises a ton of more questions, and keeps you wanting more. The series already has a “Best New Series” Eisner under its belt, and at this rate, it’s got “Best Continuing Series” in its future.
