Marvel’s AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Renewed for Truncated Season Six

Monkeys Fighting Robots

It’s official. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns for a sixth season this fall, according to the show’s Instagram account. Caution: all sorts of Marvel spoilers ahead.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. back for Season Six

While season six is only confirmed for 13 episodes, that could change based on ratings for the season five finale, re-watches over the summer, and/or fan support. It’s not likely, but it’s possible. Season five contained several milestone moments, including the show’s 100th episode. While viewership continues to drop, fan and cast support for the show’s continuation picked up earlier this season.

Last year, the show’s fate hung in the wind for far too long. Season five was a giant question mark, even as season four wrapped up and teased a space travel storyline. This year, the agents have been not only to Space, but Space of the Future. The Fitzsimmons wedding, the Philinda make-out session, and new characters including Graviton (Adrian Pasdar) steadily raised the stakes.

Season Finale? Or Series Finale?

agents of s.h.i.e.l.d. fitzsimmons weddingSeason five objectively had its slow weeks, but the show’s uncertain future forced showrunners Mo Tancharoen and Jed Whedon to take serious risks and treat season five’s finale as though it would be the last episode of the series.

The season five finale airs this Friday, May 18th. While the show’s connection to Infinity War remains to be seen, Thanos’ name has come up several times in the last few weeks. Will we see a few characters wave their “final” goodbyes? And, perhaps the biggest question of all–will Coulson, the Agent that started it all, really be dead for good this time?

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is based on characters found in Marvel comics. The show kicked off as a “behind the red tape” look at the everyday folks who kept the Avengers running, but in the last five years, the world of S.H.I.E.L.D. has expanded immeasurably. Series regulars Chloe Bennet (Daisy Johnson), Elizabeth Henstridge (Jemma FitzSimmons), Iain DeCaestecker (Leo Fitzsimmons), Ming-Na Wen (Melinda May), and Clark Gregg (Agent Phil Coulson), have been with the team since its pilot. Other regulars include Henry Simmons (Alphonso Mack), Natalia Cordova (Elena Rodriguez), Briana Venskus (Agent Piper), and Jeff Ward (Deke).

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has earned praise for diverse casting, storylines that tie in with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and character development over multiple seasons. Release dates and air time has not yet been announced for season six. Season five’s final episode will air on ABC, at 9EST on Friday, May 18th.

Watch The Trailer For Spike Lee’s ‘BLACKkKLANSMAN’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The first official trailer for BLACKkKLANSMAN has been released, giving us a first look at the latest film from visionary director Spike Lee.

BLACKkKLANSMAN tells the true story of Ron Stallworth (John David Washington), an African-American police officer who, along with his white colleague Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver), successfully infiltrates a local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan. Hearing that description, it would be easy to assume that BLACKkKLANSMAN will be a more dramatic and serious drama, but it looks like Lee wanted to go in a different direction. From the looks of this first trailer, Stallworth’s story has been adapted into a buddy cop style comedy, with Washington and Driver as the two leads.

That Giant 70 Episode RICK AND MORTY Renewal Is A Very Dumb Idea

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Whether you love the show or not, the big Rick & Morty renewal is a crazy and unrealistic order.

Adult Swim has renewed its animated hit series for a whopping 70 episodes. This order didn’t come with a specific time frame, or any details on the content. The general idea of committing to Rick & Morty makes a lot of sense. Especially now that the order will put the series into syndication status. No one can deny that the show is a cultural phenomenon with a passionate fanbase. The problem is ordering all of the episodes at once.

Setting up Rick & Morty for roughly seven more seasons all at once is too tall an order. This announcement almost feels like a joke on Adult Swim’s part. Perhaps they’re overcompensating for how long it took to renew the series. Some truly incredible shows only get seven seasons total. Giving Rick & Morty the green light for so long is an impractical move.

So many shows lose steam after years on air. A big example of this is another animated comedy – The Simpsons. The Simpsons is a true classic, and many consider it one of the greatest television shows ever. That said, the show has definitely dropped off in quality over the years. It’s been so long since The Simpsons has held the cultural relevance of its heyday. Do fans of Rick & Morty really want to risk a similar decline into irrelevance for this cartoon?

Rick and Morty

Don’t forget the problems the crew faced getting season three done. Harmon has been very open about the arguments and conflicts that delayed the season’s development. It took a long time for the third season to be ready, and it’s because of problems that could easily come up again. If producing any television show was an easy task, maybe ordering so many episodes at once would make sense. But as producing TV can be unpredictable and messy – especially this show – ordering so much of the show at once seems foolish.

Do we even know if Rick & Morty will still hold weight in the future? Fans of Harmon’s other hit series, Community, campaigned for “six seasons and a movie.” However, you might be hard-pressed to find a lot of people who watched that sixth season. Obviously, it’s not fair to blame that solely on Dan Harmon. Some of that deals with problems outside of Harmon’s control, like the series moving from NBC to Yahoo Screen. But it highlights a simple rule of the universe – you can’t predict the future. Who knows what kind of problems could plague Rick & Morty the next 7+ years.

Rick and Morty
Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, the creators of RICK & MORTY

So what happens if this insane order of episodes doens’t come to pass? What if there is a crazy drop-off in quality? That might bring out problems with the show’s worst quality… its overzealous fans. It wasn’t long ago fans were rioting over not getting a small packet of fast food dipping sauce. There has also be problems with toxicity in the fanbase, which the creators have addressed. Production problems, or any form of uncertainty regarding the show, could easily incite more of this insanity. Yes, not all fans of Rick & Morty aren’t that bad, or would be the kind of people to riot. But there are enough bad eggs that could sully the series more than the Szechuan sauce riots.

This article isn’t meant as an insult to Rick & Morty. The show has definitely had some hilarious episodes throughout its three seasons. However, ordering so much at once is a recipe for disaster. Maybe renew the show for shorter periods, taking it a few years at a time. Don’t let another show run itself into obscurity.

Review: BLOODSHOT SALVATION #9 – The Origin Of Bloodhound

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Bloodshot Salvation #9 takes a break from the ongoing narrative to tell a one-off story about everyone’s favorite weaponized dog, Bloodhound.

The issue is written by Ray Fawkes with Jeff Lemire, drawn/colored by Renato Guedes, and lettered by Simon Bowland.

The story takes place entirely on September 24, 1916, during World War I on the Morval Ridge in France. (History buffs may notice that this is just one day before the Battle of Morval began.) During a standstill between British and German forces, Doctor Henry Fulbright has arrived at the front with something to help the Brits secure the line: dogs. Dogs who have been modified to be perfect soldiers. They can withstand gas attacks and feel no pain. They can see in darkness. If injured, they can be rebuilt. They have no fear.

Bloodshot Salvation #9

In telling the origin of Bloodhound, Fawkes and Lemire are telling the origin of the Bloodshot program as a whole. They’re expanding the mythology of the character, and giving it an interesting twist. Readers have always viewed Bloodshot’s “makers” as the villains of his story. But in Doctor Fulbright, we see a man with noble intentions. War has cost him a lot; he just wants to keep others from losing anything more. As he says, “I’m no warrior, but I do have the ability to help win the conflict and end the terrible cost.” That’s superhero logic. With great power comes great responsibility.

Lemire has been adding layers to Bloodshot’s story for years, and in this issue we just get another layer.

We also get a brutal and gritty portrayal of war. We see the meaningless cycle of violence and the numbing effect it has on soldiers. Again, seeing these things firsthand adds a strange sense of understanding as to why the Bloodshot Program was created in the first place. But we also see the effect of war on people like Doctor Fulbright, the optimists and those who want to do good. It’s a sad and complex story, like most war stories, which leaves you with a lot to think about after it’s done. The last two pages will especially hit you in the gut. One thing’s for sure: you’ll never look at Bloodhound the same way again.

Renato Guedes is the perfect artist for a war story like this one. His style makes the violence feel real, like you’re looking at photos instead of drawings. The coloring is again the best aspect; blood has never looked so palpable in a comic. Guedes adds grit and grime to a story that’s already gritty and grimy. This is his last issue on the series (for now), and he clearly put his heart into it.

If you thought you were going to get a filler issue, a little breathing time before “The Book of Revelations” starts, think again. Bloodshot Salvation #9 is a side story, but it’s no less vital to the series overall. It adds depth to Bloodhound and the Bloodshot mythology as a whole, and it’ll punch you in the gut like only this creative team can.

Box Office – AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR is the King of Superhero Movies

Monkeys Fighting Robots

After being in theaters for only three weeks, Avengers: Infinity War is now the highest grossing superhero film of all time.

Infinity War, which currently sits at $1.606 billion, has passed  The Avengers, which grossed $1.519 billion in its theatrical run back in 2012, making it the former top grossing comic book flick.

Black Panther, which Marvel Studios dropped back in February, has made the most in terms of domestic box office numbers. The film brought in an incredible $696 million, which is far ahead of Infinity War‘s current total of $548 million.

With Infinity War recently opening in China and still holding steady weekend numbers domestically, there’s no doubt the picture is the new box office king of superhero movies. A combination of the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, a decade of building a cinematic universe, stellar supporting characters all around, and a villain built up for years, Infinity War’s place in the box office rankings doesn’t surprise me in the slightest.

The movie isn’t perfect, but it delivered on the spectacle and shock of what fans were anticipating. Word of mouth surrounding the film has been staggering thus far, and as we get further away from its release, it just doesn’t seem to be slowing by much. Odds are Infinity War will pass $2 billion handily, but the real question still remains: Will the currently untitled Avengers 4 be able to top it? With so many fans left hanging at the end of Infinity War, there’s no doubt millions will be tuning in for the sequel next year.

What do you make of these box office numbers? Do they surprise you, or did you expect these results from the movie? Chime in below, let us know!

Avengers 4 releases on May 3, 2019.

Margot Kidder, A Generation’s Lois Lane Passed Away At The Age of 69

Monkeys Fighting Robots

According to the report by TMZ, Kidder was at her home when she passed away, according to the spokesperson at Franzen-Davis Funeral Home in Livingston, MT. The cause of death is unknown at this point.

Kidder had 137 acting credit to her name with two still in production. An outspoken woman who never backed down from anyone.

Reaction of Kidder’s passing on social media.

“RIP Margot Kidder. One of my favorite movies of hers is the original Black Christmas. It introduced some elements that are now genre tropes and she’s fantastic in it,” said Kumail Nanjiani via Twitter.

“#MargotKidder was equally responsible for making us believe a man could fly. RIP :(,” said Joey Esposito via Twitter.

1. Arrow, “The Ties That Binds” (May 10th)

At long last, ARROW has an episode that is actually ABOUT the Green Arrow. While the Oliver-Felicity relationship has never been the best aspect of the series, it’s balanced by incredible action. From the start of the episode, every player of Team Arrow is fighting with real stakes. Diaz feels like a real villain this episode, acting with precision and anger. The way the gang is (almost) reunited is organic, and a refreshing update to the inner-Team Arrow conflict. This episode capitalizes on several weak elements of the season for a standout episode.

New Shows Coming To NBC 2018-2019

Monkeys Fighting Robots

NBC released its complete schedule for 2018-2019 including three new shows; Manifest, New Amsterdam, and I Feel Bad. The newly acquired Brooklyn Nine-Nine has yet to find a time slot.

Manifest

When Montego Air Flight 828 landed safely after a turbulent but routine flight, the crew and passengers were relieved. Yet in the span of those few hours, the world had aged five years and their friends, families and colleagues, after mourning their loss, had given up hope and moved on. Now, faced with the impossible, they’re all given a second chance. But as their new realities become clear, a deeper mystery unfolds and some of the returned passengers soon realize they may be meant for something greater than they ever thought possible. From Robert Zemeckis and Jack Rapke comes an emotionally rich, unexpected journey into a world grounded in hope, heart and destiny.

The cast includes Melissa Roxburgh, Josh Dallas, Athena Karkanis, J.R. Ramirez, Luna Blaise, Jack Messina and Parveen Kaur.

Jeff Rake will write and executive produce. David Frankel will direct and executive produce the pilot. Robert Zemeckis and Jack Rapke also executive produce. “Manifest” is produced by Warner Bros. Television and Compari Entertainment.

New Amsterdam

Inspired by Bellevue, the oldest public hospital in America, this unique medical drama follows the brilliant and charming Dr. Max Goodwin, the institution’s newest medical director who sets out to tear up the bureaucracy and provide exceptional care. How can he help? Well, the doctors and staff have heard this before. Not taking “no” for an answer, Dr. Goodwin must disrupt the status quo and prove he will stop at nothing to breathe new life into this understaffed, underfunded and underappreciated hospital — the only one in the world capable of treating Ebola patients, prisoners from Rikers and the President of the United States under one roof — and return it to the glory that put it on the map.

The cast includes Ryan Eggold, Freema Agyeman, Janet Montgomery, Jocko Sims, Anupam Kher and Tyler Labine.

David Schulner will write and executive produce. Kate Dennis will direct and executive produce the pilot. Peter Horton also executive produce. Dr. Eric Manheimer will produce. “New Amsterdam” is produced by Universal Television, Pico Creek Productions and Mount Moriah.

I Feel Bad

Emet is the perfect mom, boss, wife, friend and daughter. OK, she’s not perfect. In fact, she’s just figuring it out like the rest of us. Sure, she feels bad when she has a sexy dream about someone other than her husband, or when she pretends not to know her kids when they misbehave in public, or when she uses her staff to help solve personal problems. But that’s OK, right? Nobody can have it all and do it perfectly. From executive producer Amy Poehler comes a modern comedy about being perfectly OK with being imperfect.

The cast includes Sarayu Blue, Paul Adelstein, Aisling Bea, Zach Cherry, Johnny Pemberton and James Buckley.

Aseem Batra will write and executive produce. Julie Anne Robinson will direct and executive produce the pilot. Amy Poehler, Dave Becky and Josh Maurer also executive produce. “I Feel Bad” is produced by Universal Television, Paper Kite Productions, CannyLads Productions and 3 Arts Entertainment.

Review RBG: A Trailblazing Justice Who Became A Cultural Superstar

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Magnolia Pictures’ RBG — short for Ruth Bader Ginsburg — is a skillfully constructed documentary which weaves interviews with Justice Ginsburg and her colleagues/friends, while still examining her impact on society.

Filmmakers Julie Cohen and Betsy West stayed away from a retelling of Ginsburg’s life story by focusing on her continued strength over the years. Most individuals have simply a brief moment in the sun because very few people evolve over time. RBG repeatedly shows how Ginsburg has been able to pivot with the changing world and still stick to her core values. Cohen and West don’t seek to put her on a pedestal, but they indeed show why others continue to do so.

RBG Movie

RBG dedicates a great deal of time to showing how Ginsburg’s academic prowess opened up doors for other women to attend law school. She then took that degree and directly impacted societal perceptions of gender equality. Her strength comes from the preparation Ginsburg puts into all cases (often working daily till 4 a.m. or 5 a.m.). The foundation of the majority argument in the United States vs. Virginia (a court case of admitting female students into an all-male military academy) is directly attributed to her.

Cohen and West don’t just brush off the details of Ginsburg’s personal life, however. Rather, the filmmakers show how certain moments shaped who she became. Her world took quite a turn when she met Martin Ginsburg — the man she would ultimately marry — while studying law at Harvard. RBG demonstrates the bond they formed over time and how hard they worked to allow each other to flourish. Martin got a job at a law firm in New York, and Ginsburg moved their family there while she finished her degree at Columbia. When Martin was sick, she would take care of the kids in the day and type up her husband’s notes from his firm at night so he wouldn’t fall behind. Once her career began to ascend rather quickly, Ginsburg’s husband took a step back without hesitation. Each derived a great deal of satisfaction from seeing the other succeed. The highlight for me was seeing how tragedy (Martin’s two bouts with cancer and his death) didn’t derail her from her service to the country.

The last portion of RBG is spent examining her meteoric rise to cultural stardom. Cohen and West were able to unpack for the audience just what triggered this sudden interest in Ginsburg. Her razor-sharp wit and commitment to equality began resonating during the most combative period politics has endured in recent memory. It also didn’t hurt that a bunch of twenty-something bloggers started photoshopping the associate justice’s head wearing Biggie Smalls’ crown. Now Ginsburg’s face is on t-shirts, mugs and other products, and she draws massive crowds to her book signings. A personal highlight is seeing Ginsburg laugh while watching Kate McKinnon’s impression of her on SNL.

Overall, RBG won’t give anyone a detailed account of Ginsburg’s life, but it shows her impact on others, both personally and socially. It’s rare when the words “enjoyable” and “Supreme Court Justice documentary” go together, but in this instance, it certainly applies.

Review: THE GUERNSEY LITERARY AND POTATO PEEL PIE SOCIETY – A Great Story Buried in an Average Film

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Based on Mary Ann Shaffer’s only novel The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is a historical drama that looks at the German occupation of Guernsey during the Second World War.

Juliet Ashton (James) is a successful author who receives an assignment from The Times by her agent (Matthew Goode) in 1946. She starts to receive letters from Dawsey Adams (Michiel Huisman), a pig farmer from Guernsey who lived on the island during the German occupation. During their correspondences, the pair strikes up a friendship, and he tells her about his friends who formed a group by accident. Juliet goes to Guernsey believing this group could be a subject for her article: but the group harbor some dark secrets.

There has been a trend wartime themed film from the UK, from military and political stories like Dunkirk and Darkest Hour to subjects about the home front like Their Finest. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society sadly does not match those heights. It was a film with a great cast and solid filmmaking team but what they come up with is a standard story.

James is a lovely presence (there was a reason why she played Cinderella), and she brought this out for The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Juliet is a kindly, intelligent woman and a feminist (or at least the 1940s version of one), but there was a tragedy in her past. She is also a woman looking for some sort of belonging, rejecting an expensive apartment because it reminded her of the Blitz, lost her family during the war and despite her wealth doesn’t like to flash it about.  I expect that in the novel Juliet was written to be older because Kate Winslett, Rebecca Ferguson, and Michelle Dockery were considered for the role before James was cast but the former Downton Abbey star pulls it off.

James was also surrounded by a talented cast featuring Huisman above, Jessica Brown Findlay, Katherine Parkinson, Tom Courtenay and Penelope Wilton. Naturally, they all give solid performances, and Wilton was a highlight because her cold and hostile exterior as a cover for her own pain and grief and her story could have worked as a film or novel by itself.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is a great looking production. It was directed Mike Newell, best known for Four Weddings and a Funeral and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, so he is a talented filmmaker, and the film does excel with its costumes and cinematography. 1940s fashion and styles really suit James, and she did look ravishing in the dresses she wears. It is a regal film.

The central theme of the film is grief and the aftermath of war. Juliet is suffering from the loss of her parents, and many of the islanders have suffered in some form. People lost relatives during the bombing of the island and been arrested afterward; the children were evacuated, the island is recovering physically and economically. Around the island, there are concrete towers, a dark monument to the Nazi occupation and the slave labor who build it.

The occupation story bears a resemblance to 2015 adaptation of Suite Françoise which looked at a French town during the early days of the Nazi occupation. The flashbacks to the invasion were the more interesting aspects of the films, and the whole movie should have focused on it. The film does touch on some issues like the moral grays of war, that it is easy to see the Germans as evil during the early days of war but find out that some of them are nice. After the occupation some people are ostracized for working with the Germans with one character who sold information to the Germans: the novel properly went into more detail, and the film definitely should have.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society has been marketed as a comedy-drama, and there are some witty lines. Parkinson was the best comedic performer, playing a proto-hippie who makes a potent gin and seems like she’s away with the fairies. Newell also gave the film a melodramatic gothic quality for some scenes, and it is very much a drama with some comedic moments.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society had a compelling story about the war buried by its standard framing story. Their Finest and Suite Françoise were better films that looked at similar themes.
