10 Lost Anime Which Need The VOLTRON Treatment: An Anime Abstract

Monkeys Fighting Robots

After the overwhelming success of the Netflix original series, Voltron: Legendary Defender, the importance of a show having a good revival has become apparent. There are a plethora of animes which came to America but didn’t get enough attention and could garnish a new fanbase with the help of a revival series. This list only covers anime from the 1980s which would benefit from Netflix taking the time to give them a new show with updated animation and dynamic storytelling. These are in no particular order of importance. Instead any of these should would benefit from a little more love and attention.

10. Hello Kitty

Hello Kitty

Sure there have been a lot of Hello Kitty shows over the years but few of them became best sellers in America. A new series in the vein of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic with more defined characters teaching important lessons to children along with incredible animation would be a hit. Considering how it will help the sales of Hello Kitty merchandise in American, someone needs to get Sanrio on the phone right now.

9. Galaxy Express 999/Captain Harlock

Though these series didn’t leave much of impact, there is a great history behind both of them. These two titles both came from creator Leiji Matsumoto and are part of a shared universe of the creator’s own design. With so much mythology to pull from, a new series exploring a large universe deep characters all with their individual motivations would make for incredible binge watching. As Netflix helped to premiere the CGI remake of this series a few years ago, they are already aware of the franchise and its existence so it shouldn’t be so hard to get a new series produced.

8. Ulysses 31

Ulysses 31

The space adventure series featuring a intergalactic version of the Odyssey is prominently featured in many “Best of 1980s Cartoon Openings” lists on YouTube. A new series retelling the journey of Ulysses works to find the Kingdom Of Hades would be a great watch with updated animation. Maybe if it does come to pass a full box set release of the original series will finally be released in America. As a bonus, check out the opening below.

7. Starblazers

Starblazers

The American Adaptation of the Space Battleship Yamato series along with Robotech helped to lead fans to anime in the early 80s. There has been talk for a lot of years of a live action adaptation of the series being produced but unfortunately it seems the film is in a developmental limbo. A new series would help to gain new fans and could hopefully get the film moving as well.

6. Ronin Warriors

Ronin Warriors

This series about a team of armored teens fighting against an evil entity was a forgotten hit. It debuted as a summer replacement show and was used on Sci-Fi channel’s animation block in the infant days of the channel’s creation. Sadly, the follow up sequels weren’t very good at all. Still, there is plenty of mythology between the original show and the OVAs to create a show with fresh animation.

5. Kimba The White Lion

Kimba

There has been talks for years about if The Lion King is a rip off of this series by “The Godfather of Manga” Osamu Tezuka. A new series which featured a story based on other stories from franchise could help to make it to be more distinctive in nature. There was a time this series was an essential series for fans of animation who didn’t even know it was anime and with the help of Netflix it could be once more.

4. Patlabor

Patlabor

Patlabor may have a soft spot for mecha fans thanks to its amusing buddy cop with giant robots TV series and the surprisingly dramatic movies but most people only know it for being featured in a KMFDM music video (featured below). A new series allowing for a smoother transition between the comedy and drama elements would easily garnish a new audience. If it’s successful a full release of the manga in America may be a possibility.

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wy6Y3jTWY90[/embedyt]

3. Battle Of The Planets

Gatchaman

The series with a multitude of names. Originally Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, this series also was distributed as G-Force, Eagle Riders, and of course Battle of the Planets. Focusing on a team of five who have the power to fly and possessing specialty weapons, the team fought against aliens trying to take over the Earth. A new series would help the series to regain its popularity and might even get an American produced live action series back on track.

2. Lensman

Lensman

Many don’t remember this anime film from the old Sci-Fi channel saturday anime movie block. It was a film based on a series of novels by Edward Elmer Smith, an author nicknamed the father of space opera. Obviously not all of the material from six novels made it into the film so if it did get a new Netflix series, the story would get the adaptation it rightfully deserved. Also, the original movie might finally get a Blu-Ray release here in America.

1. Robotech

Robotech

Sure, there have been attempts over the years (even a new comic series by Titan Comics) to revive Robotech, but none of these have garnished a new audience. Instead it might just be easier to start over again with a new series. Maybe through a complete retelling of the original story and by helping to tie in the different elements which came from harsley editing three into one continuous story, the plot holes would be fixed and this series would once again get the attention it deserves.

Review: Daredevil #604- Enter the Dragon

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The Kingpin of Queens returns while Matt Murdock gets help from an ancient Order of Dragons all in this week’s issue of Daredevil.

Review: Daredevil #604 written by Charles Soule with art by Mike Henderson

He’s baaaaaaack! Kingpin, the Mayor of NYC who took about 30 arrows to the chest, returns at the end of this issue of Daredevil with one heck of a splash page.

Now, I know Fisk still has that fresh hospital gown glow but don’t let that take away from the shear size and stature of the Kingpin. There is barely space in the door frame for him to squeeze through. He’s freakin’ HUGE! Mike Henderson, Matt Milla, and Clayton Cowles work so well together on this splash page to show the urgency of the situation with Kingpin and the strategical placement of the letters at the top corner of the page to draw the reader towards this mountain of a man standing before them. If this creative team hasn’t shown us how menacing a foe Wilson Fisk is, then I don’t know who will.

However that said, I was not as impressed with this issue as I have been in the past. The impression the readers perceived in the last two issues was that the green smog was poisonous and deadly. Now out of nowhere, we see Father Jordan enter the issue to exorcise this smog from Matt Murdock like he’s possessed by a demon!

This concept was hard to connect and felt like a stretch. Matt even states later that he didn’t know Father Jordan was involved in the ancient Order of Dragons nor did he know of its existence. So, why go in this direction?

But as it turns out, this Ordo Draconum has been around since 1408 fighting vampires, zombies, Nazi demons, and Fjord Queens. Don’t get me wrong, I think the idea is smart and it’s something very intriguing. But, it felt misplaced and thrown into a story to push something that’s never been there before. Wrong time. Wrong place.

Next, we get another great page of art putting Daredevil front and center. This shows a hero that is able to swing from building to building just as fast as a Catholic, jetpack flying, ancient militia led by a priest. Never thought I’d ever say that phrase in my life! Milla and Cowles work well together on this page making the red from Daredevil pop out at the reader and the green from the smog wrap around him leaving the panel wide open to give it the full effect. Cowles moves most of the lettering to the bottom of the page with Father Jordan as to not take away from the true hero of this story. Excellent work team!

The next part of the story seemed even more out of character. Daredevil is shown using a broadsword. He even has an internal monologue about why it’s ok for him to use a sword to fight the Hand. Again, is Daredevil becoming a medieval knight when he gets his “Fresh Start”? Is he using swords and working with ancient Dragon Orders now? This all just seems like it’s coming from left field and I’m having a hard time catching the fly ball. Why is any of the ancient order needed in this arc at all? Couldn’t Soule have Daredevil figure a way out of this on his own? Maybe he gets some help from the Defenders instead?

The issue ends with Daredevil and the Order surrounded by hundreds of Hand ninjas. It turns out it was a trap. Here again, Henderson shined showing us a view of the crowd of Hand ninjas from afar. We get to see just how many ninjas Daredevil and the Order will have to fight. Cowles does a fantastic job spacing out his letters and distinguishing internal monologue from actual discussion leaving this page wide open for Henderson to help the reader see the utter crap-tastic trouble Daredevil is in with hundreds of flaming arrows flying his way. Sometimes, less is more. Great job Cowles!

Soule’s run overall has been amazing. We got Fisk as Mayor, and the hammer dropped on all vigilantes. That was interesting. Then, we saw Mayor Fisk ask Matt Murdock to be his Deputy Mayor, which was again hilariously jaw-dropping and put me on the edge of my seat. Soule ups it a notch by literally impaling Fisk with approximately 30 arrows from the Hand making Matt Murdock the new flippin’ Mayor! Again, Soule kept hitting home run after home run. But right now, I feel like the story is struggling a bit. I feel like he’s backed himself into a corner and is trying to escape creatively.

The premise of the order is fine, but it’s the placement that felt off to me. Would I read a book about the Order of Dragons? Yes, but not in the middle of THIS story. Maybe it’s because Soule was hitting too many grand salamis that now his base hits feel like outs? My hope is that bringing Biggie back (Kingpin) will help wrap up this story well.

Interview: LUKE CAGE Star Gabrielle Dennis Confirms Nightshade For Season 3

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Monkeys Fighting Robots chatted with Gabrielle Dennis who plays Tilda Dillard (daughter of Mariah Dillard) in Netflix’s Luke Cage. Dennis confirmed to us- who the villain for season 3 will be, her character’s motivation, whether season 2 makes up for season 1, Tilda’s journey, what the focus of season 2 truly is, and what it’s like to work with the great Alfre Woodard, who plays Mariah Dillard.

Luke Cage
Alfre Woodard and Gabrielle Dennis

At the end of the second season of Luke Cage, Tilda changes her name. The name Tilda Johnson is a pretty big deal in the Marvel Universe, Is Nightshade making an appearance in season 3?

Dennis: That’s definitely what we are hoping. At the end of the third season, we get a sense of a head nod that the direction that they will be going in. I haven’t. I mean we aren’t in Season 3 yet… I haven’t spoken to Cheo about that next phase.

That to me as an audience member… that’s like … OH Snap … that’s where we are headed in season 3, and I can’t wait to get to season 3 and find out how close to the comic she will be. How … will she be extremely vicious .. will she be an ally .. who will she attach herself to .. is it going to be Luke Cage, Bushmaster, or go out on her own? Will it be Shades? There are so many ways this character can go. That’s what makes it so exciting .. when we get to episode 13 your just like… AHHHH! No, I need more!

That what’s so exciting because it’s a great cliffhanger they leave it on and they don’t mention Nightshade in connection with my name. We have seen her handling Nightshade. She knows where to get the Nightshade. She’s so well versed on how powerful Nightshade is as she’s seen it first hand. So now the wheels are turning, and she’s wondering .. what can I do with this?

Why did Tilda kill her mother?

Dennis: She had to go for the better good. She was a cancer. She was not going to stop. Too many people were dying it just got to a point where crossed that line and embraced being a stoke or the last stoke standing in all its ugliness. She had to go it was time to be an end to that legacy and that darkness.

Does this season totally make up for some of the issues which plagued Luke Cage’s first season?

Dennis: Yeah, I feel like it totally makes up .. it exceeds expectations, anyone who thought .. I know there was a lot of controversy surrounding the villain situation … umm … I feel like we make up for it in spades this season.

How Would You Describe Tilda’s Journey This Season?

Dennis: Tilda’s Journey is that she starts off as this fish out of water … she’s trying to make a good name for herself in Harlem by healing people.

Then she quickly finds herself in the middle of this drama going on in Harlem that’s centered around anything Mariah Dillard related. She’s right in the line of fire. Through that journey of discovering who she is and who her mother really is and how dark she is and how much she really wants that crown and what she will do to get it. Tilda is faced with a decision. Tilda finds out that she has more power than she realizes. She’s in a position where she can affect change. Maybe put things back in balance. I think this a woman who discovers this power she didn’t know she had and deciding what to do with it.

Would you say that Luke Cage’s second season centers around whether or not it’s okay to the wrong thing for the right reason?

Dennis: Yeah, I think many of the characters in this season struggle with that fine line. A lot of the characters struggle with … for the greater good .. what should I do to solve these issues?

What is it’s like being in a majority of your scenes with Alfre Woodard?

Dennis: It’s a freaking godsend. Words can’t even express .. there’s nothing that can really prepare you. You’re just excited! There’s a combination of excitement and intimidation at first but when you get in their, and the words come to life … everything melds into place. I think she and I were a great pairing.

Review: CLOAK AND DAGGER “Call/Response” Opens Up the Lines of Communication

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Communication is key in any relationship, no matter how unconventional and complicated the connection may be.  In tonight’s episode of Cloak & Dagger, “Call/Response”, Tandy and Tyrone finally get to talk privately about their experiences dealing with their new powers.

AUBREY JOSEPH, OLIVIA HOLT
Aubrey Joseph & Olivia Holt
(Freeform/Alfonso Bresciani)

Tandy (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone’s (Aubrey Joseph) confessing conversation is intertwined throughout the episode, as we watch their individual yin-yang relationships, getting close to someone.  One relationship flourishes, while the other ends way too soon. Yet another opposite-themed story that this show thrives on.

We also get to learn a little about the Wild Red Hawks, a true slice of New Orleans life. The intricate beadwork of their Mardi Gras costumes is remarkable and interesting. It also gives us an introduction to the article of clothing that Tyrone will use as his namesake. This is definitely something I’m more interested in seeing more of in future episodes.

AUBREY JOSEPH
Aubrey Joseph
(Freeform/Alfonso Bresciani)

Corporate scumbags Roxxon Corporation will do anything to keep the secrets of the night of the oil rig explosion under wraps. Tandy teams with her mother’s slimy but sweet adulterous lawyer boyfriend to take down the business. Their endgame is similar. Greg (Gary Weeks) simply wants to get the money that Melissa (Andrea Roth) is entitled to, but Tandy also wants to know what was happened that night that gave her and Tyrone their powers. What caused that power surge? Was it really just the storm, or is there something more?

Racial profiling is touched on lightly. Tyrone has expressed that, though he comes from a wealthy family, his race holds him down. “I’m a young black man in the south. They see me, they see a thug.” He tells Tandy that’s why she’s so good at conning people; they trust her. This show, and the Marvel story in general, has broken these stereotypes, and I’m curious as to how this topic will come into play in their future.

Suicide is another taboo topic discussed tonight, and Tandy makes an attempt. Her glowing dagger appears when, as she says, “shit hits the fan.” Will her dagger save her from herself?

OLIVIA HOLT
Olivia Holt
(Freeform/Alfonso Bresciani)

The two seem to be gaining some understanding and control of their lives and their powers. With this, what will they do in order to gain the information they’re both seeking?

DC on CW: Reviewing ‘SUPERGIRL,’ ‘THE FLASH,’ and ‘ARROW’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The CW superhero shows have all wrapped their latest seasons. We have been recapping SUPERGIRL, THE FLASH, and ARROW weekly through the year. Now that the seasons have concluded, which show had the strongest season?

Next

1. ARROW Season 6

After six seasons on air, ARROW is showing signs of weakness. The show made a curious choice to take the focus off of Green Arrow. Shifting the story of the crusading vigilante to a new father drama really did not work. This may have been the season that puts ARROW at the bottom slot of the Arrowverse.

None of the characters have especially compelling storylines. Oliver, the titular Green Arrow, didn’t even get much action. The character spent too much time being a struggling mayor, and the title ‘ARROW’ felt like a misnomer. Diggle and Felicity get lost in Oliver’s generic storyline. The side characters were mostly given rehashes of their initial struggles. There really wasn’t a single hero that could hold the season on their shoulders.

ARROW also suffered from a severe lack of a strong villain. Even with a gaggle of baddies, none of them were all that fearsome. Black Siren and Vigilante, two returning villains, were rendered toothless, as the show turned them into more heroic heroes. Even Cayden James, the potentially biggest bad, was turned into a semi-bad dad before his demise. Diaz, meanwhile, failed to take his place as a truly intimidating figure. There was no villain that gave ARROW a good reason to fight for.

The closest ARROW came to a strong story arc was with the two Team Arrow conflicts. The rift between Oliver and the various sidekicks was a great way to cause variety. However, once that rift happened, it quickly became stale. It’s as if ARROW knew this inter-team struggle was the closest thing to an exciting conflict for its characters. The Team Arrow Civil War started good, but didn’t last.

This season was truly disappointing. As the first and flagship CW superhero show, ARROW should’ve been stronger. Unfortunately, the series had neither an active hero, nor a strong antagonist. For a season that promised going “back to basics,” this season felt more like an example of everything currently wrong with the show. Too many metas, too much soap opera drama… will ARROW ever go back to form? Or are the days of the great Green Arrow gone?

Popcorn Frights Releases Its First Wave Of Cinematic Horror Coming This Summer

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Popcorn Frights Film Festivals returns to South Florida for its 4th year of unleashing terror on the pristine shores of the sunshine state and this year is no different with movies like Anna and the Apocalypse, a new Puppet Master, and Boogeyman Pop from Blumhouse.

“This summer will see a fury of cinematic terror
unlike Florida has ever seen!” – Popcorn Frights

Last year I reported about the Popcorn Frights festival for the first time, and I’m still talking about some of the great films curated by founders Igor Shetyrenberg and Marc Ferman. The festival last year featured Mayhem, the office-based action film directed by Joe Lynch who was also a guest. Dozens of horror films played throughout the six-day festival. And the press release for the first wave of announcements for the 2018 season already looks impressive. To add to the atmosphere, the festival takes place in its new home at Savor Cinema, a state-of-the-art theater that used to be a church.

Below are just a few of the films coming to the festival this summer.

Puppet Master: The Little Reich

puppet master-horror-movie

During a road trip to a convention for the 30th Anniversary of the infamous Toulon Murders, a comic book nerd, his new girlfriend and his best friend come face to face with a set of sadistic Nazi puppets. All hell breaks loose when a strange force animates the puppets at the convention, setting them on a bloody killing spree that’s motivated by an evil as old as time.

Boogeyman Pop

booogeyman-blumhouse-horror

In this striking Blumhouse production set over the course of one summer weekend, a bat-wielding, masked killer in a rusted-out black Cadillac weaves in and out of three interlocking stories awash in sex, drugs, punk rock, black magic, and broken homes.

Anna And The Apocalypse

apocalypse-horror-film

In this gleeful genre-mashing holiday horror musical a zombie apocalypse threatens a sleepy town at Christmas forcing Anna and her high school friends to fight, sing, and slash their way to survival with a fast-spreading undead horde in relentless pursuit.

St. Agatha

Wolfman’s Got Nards

monster squad-horror-documentary

A heartfelt documentary exploring the power of one of the strangest, scariest, and most iconic kids films to ever grace the silver screen — The Monster Squad — and its 30-year impact on its rabid fan base, the cast and crew, and the future of horror comedies.

Havana Darkness – WORLD PREMIERE!

havana-horror-movie

Touted as the first English language horror film to be shot in Cuba! Traveling to Havana, Cuba, to investigate the origins of a mysterious manuscript supposedly written by acclaimed American novelist, Ernest Hemingway, three friends are thrust into a terrifying game of cat and mouse when they find themselves trapped inside an abandoned building nestled in the center of the country’s vibrant capital.

Horror Classics!

nightmare-elm street-horror-movie

Perhaps the most exciting announcement so far, at least for slasher horror fans like me, is the event featuring Chuck Russell, director of Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors which includes screenings of the film and Russell’s other classic, The Blob (1988).

Review: BOUNDARIES Shows An Absence Of Love Is Lasting And Impactful

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Boundaries is the perfect blend of a carefully crafted narrative with terrific performances, giving the audience perspective on pain that is authentic and lasting.

Writer/director Shana Feste sets out to showcase the imperfections which are becoming all too common in today’s modern family and how a lack of parental love can be damaging. Boundaries focuses on the origins of our demons and how they don’t necessarily come from a bottle. Sometimes the worst enemy we face is the inner turmoil inside our heads.

Boundaries
Vera Farmiga and Christopher Plummer

The film centers around the exploits of the Jaconi family. Laura (Vera Farmiga) is a complete mess. She’s starving for companionship and will compromise what she wants in the hopes of her latest boyfriend morphing into Prince Charming. Laura fosters numerous dogs and cats because she’s craving affection. Her son Henry (Lewis MacDougall) is quite the artist but has an unusual habit of drawing people naked (even if he hasn’t witnessed it firsthand). The combination of previous behavior choices and his odd habit are enough to get him expelled from school.

Needing to send her son to private school and lacking the funds to do so, Laura reaches out to Henry’s father, Leonard (Bobby Cannavale). Leonard suggests Laura call her father, Jack (Christopher Plummer), which she is hesitant to do. Eventually, she gives in and calls him only to find that he’s been kicked out of his retirement home due to illicit activities, such as selling pot to his neighbors. They come to an agreement where Laura will get the money she needs to send Henry to a private school in return for her driving Jack to California so he can live with Laura’s sister, JoJo (Kristen Schaal). They all hop into Laura’s sedan and begin a trek that they will never forget.

Boundaries
Christopher Plummer and Lewis MacDougall

Feste’s narrative is well-constructed and provides audience members with insight into what ails the Jaconi family. When Laura was growing up, Jack was more wrapped up in who his next buyer would be rather than raising his daughter probably, and the effects of Laura’s childhood left her emotionally stunted. She seems incapable of having a healthy relationship and is drawn to the wrong types of men. Leonard’s slick-talking ways were enough to woo her and cause their marriage to implode after the birth of Henry. With every broken relationship, Laura becomes more and more emotionally shut-off which indeed rubs off on Henry. Jack realizes what is happening but is at a loss for how to make things right. So he avoids the issue by continuing to build his successful drug business. JoJo has managed to stay relatively sane, but that’s because she never expected much from her dad.

Boundaries has tremendous chemistry which is the driving force behind its beautiful performances. Seeing Farmiga and Plummer go at each other was such a joy. The intensity of those exchanges allows the audience to immerse themselves in these deeply personal moments. Farmiga’s character feels like her life is adrift as she crashes into one catastrophe after another, and she doesn’t know how to get back on track.

Cannavale and Farmiga are also electric on screen. Leonard realizes that there is still a tiny spark between them and seeks to capitalize on that. Laura is incredibly vulnerable and dismisses the constant hints from her ex-husband that he’s terrible for her. This conflict leads Laura with a decision to make regarding her feelings for her ex and ultimately raises the questions of whether Jack can step up to be the father she needs. It all culminates in a thrilling moment, wherein Plummer unleashes one of the best lines of the film.

Sara Mishara’s cinematography is effective and uses numerous two-shots that frames specific scenes in such a way that they have a familial tone. Michael Penn’s music too has a pop feel to it but it melds well into the film. Overall, Boundaries is a compelling film which brings to light the importance of family and the lasting harm stemming from a lack of love. Feste isn’t trying to make any statements in the film but does show that how we act towards someone impacts that person’s perception and future down the road.

Lucasfilm Denies Cancellation of Star Wars Spin-Offs

Monkeys Fighting Robots

In the wake of Solo underperforming, Lucasfilm denies the Star Wars spin-offs are being cancelled. In fact, the studio says more films are in development.

It seems fans may yet see more of the galaxy far far away. We might even get more Star Wars spin offs. That is, assuming the recent talk is nothing more than rumours.

solo

Since its release last month, Solo: A Star Wars Story has been disappointing, to say the least. The film’s box office is low, and the reviews are mixed. Word on the street is that all spin-offs were scrapped in response to Solo‘s poor reception.

According to ABC News, these reports of cancellation are not true. Yesterday, Lucasfilm called them “speculative at best” and “inaccurate.” The studio says there are “multiple” Star Wars films in the pipeline. However, they have yet to be officially announced.

Thanks to J.J. Abrams, Episode IX is coming to theatres in 2019. Director Rian Johnson has plans for a trilogy in the next few years. Details are scarce on this project, but we know it won’t have any connection to the main series. None of the current Star Wars leads will appear in Johnson’s films.

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fuPFaPTXQVY[/embedyt]

The real question is what becomes of the other spin-offs. James Mangold is set to direct a movie about Boba Fett. There’s an Obi-Wan Kenobi project in the works. This would have Ewan McGregor reprising his role from the prequels. There’s also a television series with Jon Favreau producing.

It remains to be seen what the other movies will be. There is hope we might get to see Donald Glover in a Lando Calrissian feature. Only time will tell.

DC Comics: Walmart To Sell Exclusive “100-Page Giants” Starting July 1

Monkeys Fighting Robots

DC Comics will begin selling “100-page giant comics” exclusively at Walmart starting July 1.

“Available for $4.99, each 100-page anthology features all-new stories written exclusively for these books by some of DC’s top creative talents,” reads the official press release. “Each title will also include additional story arcs drawn from fan-favorite DC eras such as the New 52, Rebirth and the New Age of DC Heroes.”

The four initial titles starting July 1 are: Superman Giant (written by Jimmy Palmiotti with art by Tom Derenick), Teen Titans Giant (written by Dan Jurgens with art by Scot Eaton), Batman Giant (written by Jimmy Palmiotti with art by Patrick “Patch” Zircher), and Justice League of America Giant (written by Tim Seeley with art by Rick Leonardi and Steve Buccellato). “Beginning in August, the Superman and Justice League of America titles will arrive in week one of each month, with the second pair, Batman and Teen Titans, arriving approximately two weeks later.”

In September, writers Tom King and Brian Michael Bendis will take over and begin 12-part stories in Superman Giant and Batman Giant, respectively.

“We are extraordinarily excited about working with Walmart to expand the reach of our books,” said DC Publisher Dan DiDio.  “These new monthly books combine new and accessible stories with reprints of classic comic series. It’s a great way for new readers to get into comics and follow the characters they’ve grown to love in TV and film.”

We caught up with Aaron Haaland, owner of A Comic Shop in Winter Park, FL, to see how he feels about the deal as a retailer:

“I wish we could get 100 pages for $4.99,” said Haaland. “The comic shop locator website better be in each issue, since we subsidize most of the content by ordering it nonreturnable at a retail price of 20 pages for $3.99.

Maybe some of the people of Walmart will follow the stories into comic shops, maybe we should all get riding carts for our shops.

I want to know if we’ll get to sell the new King and Bendis stories as collections when they’re done.”

Get the full rundown on the four initial titles below, and sound off with your thoughts in the comments!

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Writer Brian Michael Bendis will begin a 12-part Batman story in September, while Tom King will begin a 12-part Superman story the same month.

The stories will be part of the upcoming “100-page giant comics” that DC is selling exclusively through Walmart, as announced this morning. It’s a role-reversal for the two writers, as King’s been writing Batman for almost 50 issues, and Bendis very recently made his DC Comics debut writing Superman.

King teams up with artist Andy Kubert, while Bendis’ partner is as-yet-unknown. Also unknown is whether or not these stories are in-canon.

About Tom King’s Superman:

September’s SUPERMAN GIANT #3 features Eisner Award-winning writer Tom King’s first return to the Man of Steel since his poignant and heartfelt tribute story, “For Tomorrow,” in the pages of ACTION COMICS #1000. Together with DC Master Class artist Andy Kubert, this powerhouse team will take readers on a new 12-part adventure titled “Up in the Sky!” When a little girl is kidnapped and taken from Earth, Superman embarks on a galaxy-spanning mission to find the perpetrators…but has to decide what lengths he will go to in order to save one life!

About Bendis’ Batman:

Beginning with BATMAN GIANT #3 in September, superstar writer Brian Michael Bendis makes his DC debut on the Dark Knight with a 12-part story, “Universe.” Batman’s run-in with the Riddler leads the Caped Crusader into a mystery that spans the globe!

Bendis’ first Batman comic is a huge deal, so it’s a little questionable why DC is choosing to release it in Walmarts instead of in local comic shops.

This is a developing story; not much else is known at this time. Keep it tuned to Monkeys Fighting Robots for updates!
