Exclusive Preview: SUICIDE SQUAD ANNUAL #1

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Suicide Squad Annual #1 hits your local comic book store on August 22, but thanks to DC Comics, Monkeys Fighting Robots has a five-page exclusive preview for you to check out.

The book is written by Cullen Bunn, with art by Ronan Cliquet. Mick Gray and Paul Pelletier worked on the Swamp Thing cover.

About the Suicide Squad Annual #1 :
Thrown together to apprehend an escaped inmate, Solomon Grundy, Rag Doll and Merlyn head into the muck surrounding Belle Reve, but no one is prepared for a meeting with the Swamp Thing. Bodies decay quickly in the bayous of Louisiana, and the avatar of the Green doesn’t care if the Squad makes it out alive.

Bunn is on fire when it comes to writing horror, so to give him the setting of Belle Reve Prison and Swamp Thing, is like lobbing a ball over the plate for Babe Ruth. The first five pages are dark, bloody, and horrifying. With 48 pages, I can only imagine how good the book gets when the Swamp Thing shows up.

WEAPON H #6 Review: Action Pak-ed

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Captain America fights Weapon H, Skrullduggers attempt to eat kids, Man-Thing gets supercharged, and Hulkverine possibly gets promoted as Greg Pak kicks off this action-packed issue of WEAPON H #6 with some epically brutal fight scenes that will give you a better appreciation for our up-and-coming gargantuan hero. Let’s dive in!

WRITTEN BY: Greg Pak
ART BY: Ario Anindito

Weapon H 6-1

Summary

As Hulkverine was attempting to escape Roxxon, he unknowingly damaged Dario Agger’s portal to a place called Weirdworld. Roxxon has been going to Weirdworld to mine for resources, make some extra cash, and probably used this other dimension as a testing ground for experiments like Weapon H. Well, Dario Agger can’t close the portal and something called Skrullduggers, which look like shape-changing Skrull dragons, begin to explode out of the dimensional portal.

Hulkverine, a supercharged Man-Thing nicknamed Manny, and some mutated Brood alien-human hybrid work together to save this Elementary School from these shape-changing Skrull dragons who begin to morph into kids. After Weapon H slaughters a bunch of Skrullduggers, he tracks down a few of the Skrull dragons and attempts to gut them like fishes. However, Captain America rides in on his motorcycle and stops the Hulkverine from killing these things that look like kids. After Weapon H’s initial star-struck fades, he puts Cap in his place and their team up is set for the next issue!

Weapon H 6-2

Pak Man Fever

Greg Pak isn’t trying to win an Eisner or a Lifetime Achievement award with this comic, however he is trying to give his readers an entertaining escape from reality, which he does in spectacular fashion. As readers know, life can be tough and many fans turn to comics to hide from their everyday monotony.

With each issue of WEAPON H, Pak delivers melee of monstrous proportions, destructive explosions, and vicious beasts, all while creating an unstoppable Hulkverine that only appears to have one weakness: his wife and kids. For readers introduced to Pak’s Hulkverine for the first time, they can read it and say things like ”Oh $&@!” or ”That was $&@ nuts!” with sheer flabbergasted amazement.

Pak has sent fans furious action-filled suspense with a science fiction flare for six straight issues now infused with astonishing art from artists like Ario Anindito and Morry Hollowell, who did an outstanding job this issue. Pak has been continuously straightforward, directly to the point, and basically writes a fast-paced, reliable, summer blockbuster movie each month. What more could comic book fans want?

Weapon H 6-3

Artist Highlights

From out of the gate, the art by Philip Tan and Romulo Fajardo Jr is so detailed and alluring that the cover alone draws readers into the comic. Just look at the size of Weapon H thrashing Captain America. Why wouldn’t anyone want to peek inside? In addition, take a look at Anindito’s art inside the comic with his proportions of Hulkverine versus anyone else, including the Man-Thing. Anindito’s art shows fans just how large and beastly Weapon H truly is while adding so much to the legend that Pak has already created.

Next, even though the name Skrulldugger seems silly, Anindito’s art of these Skrull dragons is totally on point. These winged-creations are almost as large as Weapon H with more teeth than a Great White Shark! Don’t let the name fool you, these interdimensional dragons mean business.

Finally, Anindito’s splash pages with Captain America and Hulkverine were so incredibly detailed and crisp. These spreads, especially the last page, grabbed the reader’s attention and placed Weapon H’s immense size compared to one of the best superheroes in history. The colors were vivid and the pages were deeply dynamic. I was very impressed with Anindito’s art and I hope he stays on the book for a bit longer to see what else he’s capable of drawing. Together with Pak, these two tell a really good story.

Weapon H 6-4

Story Highlights

One of my favorite parts of the issue was something that ”almost” happened. Once Pak shows readers that the Skrullduggers can shape shift into children, I instantly thought readers were going to see Hulkverine impale a kid. Now, technically it would be a shape-shifting dragon that looks like a kid but that would have been an epic scene for Pak and Anindito to show.

Another great aspect of the issue was Pak’s portrayal of Steve Rogers. Pak writes that Man-Thing’s touch doesn’t work on Captain America because Steve doesn’t have fear. This was a cool addition by Pak that gave Cap the classic feel fans have been clamoring for now since SECRET EMPIRE. This was a nice touch by an experienced writer.

However, where does the story go from here? Cap now knows that Weapon H is not a bad guy and after this team up, readers would assume Cap would help Hulkverine stop Roxxon and Dario Agger. So, why would Hulkverine continue to run? And, seeing his capabilities, why wouldn’t Cap keep a close eye on him or possibly work with him? Pak’s current arc is fun, interesting, and brings up some great questions but I’m curious where he takes readers after these next couple issues.

Weapon H 6-5

Should you add this issue and/or series to your pull list?

Absolutely! Pak is writing an engaging and enjoyable story that’s exciting each month. In this issue, Anindito’s art was clear, vibrant, and polished. Caramagna and Cowles use their lettering experience to evenly space out the issue and make the movement from panel to panel seem easy, natural, and flawless.

Furthermore, Pak’s overall story has quickly introduced a brand new character, his backstory, and has now pointed the Hulkverine towards a purpose. If you’re interested in something quick, dynamic, and fun, Pak’s WEAPON H is for you. I’m all in on this issue and the series moving forward! Pick this issue up and add this series to your pull list. You’ll be happy you did.

Review: CRAZY RICH ASIANS Is The Summer’s Biggest Breakout Hit

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Groundbreaking is a word carelessly applied and rarely applicable in our world. Just because something is new doesn’t mean we need to document that moment to preserve for posterity. However, there are those rare instances where that word doesn’t adequately cover scope what’s being discussed.

Simply just calling director John Chu’s Crazy Rich Asians groundbreaking would be a slight towards everyone associated with the film. Don’t just see Warner Brothers latest release because it is a romantic comedy which has an all Asian cast. Crazy Rich Asians merely is a damn good movie period. Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim adapted the screenplay (based on Kevin Kwan’s novel) is equal parts touching, hysterical and echoes the statement Kwan makes in his book about love overcoming perceived social barriers. Director of photography Vanja Černjul successfully captures the lush set designs highlighting the bright and vibrant colors teeming at every corner.

Crazy Rich Asians

(Center standing L-R) JANICE KOH as Felicity, AMY CHENG as Jacqueline, MICHELLE YEOH as Eleanor and SELENA TAN as Alix in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and SK Global Entertainment’s and Starlight Culture’s contemporary romantic comedy “CRAZY RICH ASIANS,” a Warner Bros. Pictures release.

Our narrative centers around Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) and her relationship with longtime boyfriend, Nick Young (Henry Golding). Chu is a professor at NYU who seems to have found her one true love, Nick. Young is looking to take the next step and wants his beloved Rachel to meet his family back in Singapore (and attend the wedding of a family friend). We quickly find out that Nick may have been holding back a few details about his background. His family happens to be the richest in all of Singapore and his courtship of Chu is seen as something akin to The Bachelor. Their bliss quickly becomes rife with jealousy and betrayal as being the object of Nick’s affections makes any girl the scourge of the earth. Even worse, Nick’s mother (Michelle Yeoh) has her sights on breaking them up once and for all.

Crazy Rich Asians
(L-R) CONSTANCE WU as Rachel and MICHELLE YEOH as Eleanor in Warner Bros. Pictures’, SK Global Entertainment’s and Starlight Culture’s contemporary romantic comedy “CRAZY RICH ASIANS,” a Warner Bros. Pictures release.

The ensemble in Crazy Rich Asians delivers one of the best performances of 2018.  Wu is a delight, and her scenes with Yeoh are electric. If anyone from this film could attract at least minor awards season buzz, it indeed will be Yeoh. She puts on a masterclass in pacing and emphasis showing the world how the simplest of phrases can inflict pain. My favorite performance had to be Nico Santos portraying Oliver. His scenes were the perfect break from the more serious moments during the film.

(L-R) HENRY GOLDING as Nick and CONSTANCE WU as Rachel in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and SK Global Entertainment’s and Starlight Culture’s contemporary romantic comedy “CRAZY RICH ASIANS,” a Warner Bros. Pictures release.

Chu’s direction appeared loose allowing these performers the freedom to take their characters in compelling directions. Costume designer Mary Vogt will likely be nominated for an Oscar after creating the most creative and ornate pieces seen in 2018. Brian Tyer’s score will cause audiences to swoon as they watch this magical tale unfold.

Overall, Crazy Rich Asians is a brilliantly written narrative which is wonderfully executed and destined to charm moviegoers around the world.

Ninja-K #10 Review: A Dark Secret Of MI6 Returns And Seeks Revenge

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Ninja-K #10 from Valiant Comics arrives with a stripped-down story that leaves the massive battle in Mexico behind and reveals a deadly secret from the past with a very human failing who threatens the temporary peace.

For the past few issues, Ninka-K has taken readers on a wild action ride as our titular hero and his team of super-powered friends took on an equally powerful group of villains. Ninja-K #9 put to rest the Battle at Mexico City, ending it in spectacular fashion. However, for Colin King, aka Ninja-K, it was somewhat a pyrrhic victory. His side won the war, but the consequences of his decisions left King without many friends. And now, in Ninja-K #10, more things start to unravel for King’s employers, MI6.

Writing: Christos Gage
Pencils: Larry Stroman
Inks: Ryan Winn
Colors: Andrew Dalhouse
Letters: A Larger World Studios
Editor: Karl Bollers

“Immediate threat: MI6” – “The Computer”

WRITING

The artistic team changed a bit for this new issue of Ninja-K, but Christos Gage continues to handle the duties when it comes to the writing and story. Gage does an excellent job of balancing out Ninja-K’s hyper-action with some more character bits. Ninja-K #10 hits the ground running with an escape by a deadly prisoner who is oddly apologetic for the people he kills. After a few pages of exposition, that could arguably be a little too exposition-y, the story dives back into the vibrant action that makes Ninja-K fun to read.

Ninja-K #10 is sort of a standalone issue. A reader with no knowledge of what came before can quickly pick up what’s happening in the here and now. For better and worse, Gage handles this issue almost like an episode of Daredevil or Law & Order. There’s a clear pattern of action intro, exposition/setup, and payoff. Gage fills in the many blanks of that formula with action and intrigue.

ART

The Battle of Mexico City came to a close with Ninja-K #9 and the new storyline offered in #10 is handled by a new visual team. Changing artists, colorists, and inkers is a tricky thing in comics. Sometimes, the artist and art become one and the same, and it’s hard to look at the same character in a new way. So, what am I getting at here? Readers shouldn’t worry about some drastic shift in visual quality. Artist Stroman, along with inker Ryan Winn and colorist Andrew Dalhouse continue the great work started by Juan José Ryp and the previous team. There are tiny, nit-picky points where the difference is clear, but they are few and far between Ninja-K still looks consistently good.

CONCLUSION

Like with many stories, readers will either hang on to the train and go along for the ride or not. Ninja-K #10 continues the action-packed ride that features super-spies, Gods, monsters, magic, and more epic mayhem. Ninja-K is a science fiction and supernatural James Bond, if that doesn’t do anything for you, then you’re likely not going to get what this book is doing. However, if you, like me, felt special things in your heart at the thought of a ninja fighting a cyborg ninja with a shoulder-mounted cannon and built-in sword, then start reading Ninja-K immediately.

MULTIPLE MAN #3 Review: Nonstop Insanity

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Death, destruction, killing, and even more killing all in this week’s MULTIPLE MAN #3 as Matthew Rosenberg slaughters every last bit of hope the future had of stopping the evil Dictator Jamie Madrox Prime. Let’s take a look!

WRITTEN BY: Matthew Rosenberg
ART BY: Andy MacDonald
COLORS: Tamra Bonvillain
LETTERS: Travis Lanham

WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

Spoilers

MULTIPLE MAN SPOILERS TOO!

To see what happened the last issue, click on the writer’s name below.

MM 3-1

Summary

The story opens with Jamie Madrox, the Multiple Man, escaping his destruction from 7,000 duplicates by running back to their hidden bunker. Jamie, as well as the surviving ”good” duplicates, fight off as many of the doubles that they could.

One by one, each super powered Jamie Madrox duplicate dies protecting the ”good” Jamie until all that remains is the original Madrox Prime’s son and the ”good” Jamie. Lucky for Jamie, right before his capture, Forge sent some of Jamie’s ”good” duplicates into the future for help.

Well, after shooting Jamie Prime’s son in the head, the evil duplicates take our ”good” Jamie to meet the evil Emperor Madrox. The issue ends with the Emperor cutting ”good” Jamie’s head clean off on top of a Beast-skinned rug.  Where does Matthew Rosenberg go from here?

MM 3-2

The Best Part

Matthew Rosenberg’s creative humor, witty dialogue, and funny situational comedy drive the issue through the maniacal destruction of the evil Emperor Jamie Madrox Prime. Sure, some of the timey-whimey time-travel pieces are a bit confusing but Rosenberg does a fantastic job masking them with action scenes, and over the top, jaw-dropping revelations.

For example, readers will be shocked to see that everyone dies in this issue. Every last dupe, Beast, Lockjaw, and even Jamie Madrox Prime’s son gets shot in the head and killed. Rosenberg reveals one shocking moment after another that will keep readers on the edge of their sofa. And when readers couldn’t get more surprised, Rosenberg decapitates our last Jamie Madrox who readers have been following throughout the entire story. The Multiple Man may be the perfect character for Rosenberg to write. I only hope some version of the Multiple Man manages to stick around after this mini-series is done.

MM 3-3

The Art

Andy Macdonald does a fantastic job of capturing the personality of both Rosenberg and Jamie Madrox throughout the issue. I enjoy a more realistic tone and feel with my art, but readers can genuinely appreciate Macdonald’s style and his portrayal of each gruesome death that the Multiples meet. MacDonald’s art is well detailed and fits so well with the ridiculous nature of the stories theme. Together with Rosenberg, readers can see the fun that Macdonald had creating this issue.

MM 3-4

Should you buy this issue?

Absolutely! From the first page, readers can see the pure insanity Rosenberg puts into this issue. Plus, with the help of Macdonald setting the mood and tone with his art, readers instantly see the creativity and heart this team has for the character and the story. Rosenberg kills everyone including all our Marvel Superheroes. Just look on the wall at the end of the issue to see how many heroes Emperor Jamie Madrox killed! This comic is off-the-wall nuts and loads of fun. Pick this sucker up!

Should you add this to your pull list?

Well… Yeah! If you’ve read the series to this point, you got to read the next issue. Where does the story go from here? Every Multiple died including our stories hero version of Jamie Madrox. I assume the dupes sent to the future will come back ready to fight and take down Emperor Jamie Madrox. Or, maybe the X-men come to help with the Chrono Beacon? However, seeing how nuts this issue was and knowing now that Rosenberg will throw anything at the readers, who knows what’s going to happen next issue? Point is: get these past three issues and add this to your pull list for the last two issues. Paraphrasing Mugatu: ”It’s that damn Rosenberg! He’s so hot right now!”

THOR #4 Review: Jason Aaron, The Adopted Son Of Odin

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Thanos breaks up with Hela, Thor becomes the God of Hel, and Balder comes back to the land of the living all in this week’s THOR #4 as Jason Aaron reintroduces the Valkyries and Karnilla becomes Hela’s new Hel bride. Let’s dive in!

WRITTEN BY: Jason Aaron
ART BY: Michael Del Mundo
COLORS: Marco D’Alfonso
LETTERS: Joe Sabino

WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

Spoilers

THOR SPOILERS TOO!

To see what happened the last issue, click on the writers’ name below.

Thor 4-1

Summary

With a little help from Loki, Thor went to Valhalla to get the Valkyrie to help in their war in Hel. Odinson manages to rally the Valkyrie to fight by his side, and the army from Valhalla heads to Hel to stop the Queen of Cinder, the Fire Goblins, and Malekith’s war on the Nine Realms. Meanwhile, Thanos breaks up with Hela, Thori tears apart some Fire Goblins and the rest of the sons and daughters of Odin join in the battle.

Thor returns with his borrowed Valkyrie army, puts on Hela’s crown, and becomes the God of Death. Using his newfound power, he throttles Cinder and ends her reign. However, Hela gets her crown back, refuses to help fight Malekith, and becomes Queen of Hel again. Lucky for Odinson, Thor manages to gain Balder to help on his quest to stop Malekith thanks to some slight of hand by Karnilla, who is Hela’s new bride of Hel.

Thor 4-2

The Best Part

Aaron has been writing some version of the character Thor, as well as the supporting cast, and all Realms associated with Thor since 2012. The writer has a long history with Asgard, the Nine Realms, Odin, and all of his sons, daughters, and relatives. Heck, Aaron has written many of the items this new run his referencing.

Thus, Aaron captures the witty banter between the brothers Loki and Thor, as well as makes the squabbles come off as familiar and refreshing even when surrounded by life-threatening danger. Every word he chooses to use is carefully crafted to fit each Asgardian and submerses the reader into the story making them feel apart of every event.

My point is that the extended time Aaron has been working on Odinson has helped him genuinely portray the character, the terminology, and dialogue better than anyone else could in all the Realms (at Marvel). Merely reading the banter and conversation between every character involved in his story fits so well. The way Aaron writes Odinson is as if he’s shared many pints of mead with this Asgardian, Norse, God of Thunder. As silly as it is to say, Aaron may very well be an adopted Odinson by this point.

Thor 4-3

The Art

Michael Del Mundo’s art is very fluid and has a surrealistic vibe to it that fits this comic perfectly. Truthfully, Del Mundo’s style is not my favorite choice. But, his almost painted tone weaves so closely with a story that comes across more mythological, cosmic, and otherworldly. Marco D’Aflonso uses colors that are strong, vivid, and even jarring at times. D’Alfonso creates drastic color differences throughout the issue that help amplify key moments and items like Odinson’s hammer, Thori hilariously mauling Cinder’s Fire Goblins, and Thor becoming the God of Death. Plus, the art wouldn’t be complete without Joe Sabino’s lettering adding to the Asgardian feel with each written letter and spoken word resembling a Viking, Norse lettering style, as well as wonderful pacing and panel layouts to draw the reader through each page.

Thor 4-4

Should you buy this issue?

Yes! It was pretty dang good. From Thori chewing on every last Fire Goblin, Odinson becoming the God of Death, Thanos dumping Hela for his old main squeeze, and Balder coming back to life, this issue was nonstop action, witty banter, and creative fun from jump street. Aaron knows Thor like a brother and has ways of telling stories about the character that feels like everyone’s tossing a few pints back at the local watering hole. And if Aaron’s style doesn’t tickle your fancy, Del Mundo’s mesmerizing art will draw you into the story. Pick this one up and hop on board.

Should you add this to your pull list?

Definitely! If you love Thor, there is no one better to currently capture his voice than Aaron. His love for the character, Odinson’s mythos, and the Asgardian Realms are magnificent. Plus, readers are already aware of the overarching theme, which is Malekith trying to destroy the Nine Realms. However, how will Malekith destroy the Realms and what role will the future King Thor play into his story? The future Thor, as well as his granddaughters, are the part I’m looking the most forward too and it seems like that could be exactly what Aaron is giving us next issue. Moving forward, this is the perfect place for new readers to jump into the series.

Advance Review: MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 #1

Monkeys Fighting Robots

After Dark Horse Comics announced Mystery Science Theater 3000 would have a comic series, fans were confused about how it would work. Would the series translate to a comic book format? Luckily, the results are in, and fans have nothing to worry about.

Summary

Jonah, Tom Servo, Crow T. Robot and all the other residents of Satellite Of Love find themselves the victim of Kinga Forrester’s latest experiment.

Writing

The amazing part of this series is just how well it translated into the comic book format. The comedy stayed tight and helped to make the issue such a joy to read. This is due to the fact many of the individuals who work on the show such as Joel Hodgson and Harold Bucholz helped to write this first issue. The rapid pacing of the jokes illustrates the large writing pool of Mary Robinson, Seth Robinson, Sharyl Volpe, and Matt McGinnis were critical for helping to translate the show into a comic book series. A lot of the humor was able to hold up from panel to panel without getting tired or dull.

Inserting the characters into the old public domain comic, adding additional dialogue to the panels (much like how the jokes work in the show) and having the cast be self-aware was very witty. Thanks to their work, the jokes from ripping into the plot of a comic book from the 1960s are incredibly entertaining. It’s a joy which needs to be experienced first hand to truly appreciate how much fun comes from the playful banter the book can achieve.

Mystery Science Theater 3000

Artwork

The artwork by Todd Nauck and Mike Manly adds to the comedy in spectacular ways. Take the two pages of the issue which features references from Halo, MTV, and Lord of the Rings which are subtle but very amusing when you finally catch them. Later as the comic transitions back into the public domain series they use as a setting, the artists found an excellent way to blend all the artwork without it becoming too jarring.

Even though most of the old comic is public domain, the additional artwork seems almost like it’s spot on. Tom Servo is transferred into the comic, and his head is placed on the main character’s body. Though the head is entirely off in proportions, it still matches the same style and dynamic to the point it feels like this was how the comic originally looked. The coloring by Mike Manley and Wez Dzioba helps with this aspect a lot.

Conclusion

As a fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000 who has loved the Netflix revival of the series, it is hugely encouraging to find this new installment from the franchise to be so enjoyable. Though it is only set to be six issues, let’s hope a large amount of sales will justify more in the future. There are a lot of bad comics in the world, and only the humor of the Satellite of Love will genuinely be able to face them head-on. The Mystery Science Theater 3000 comic is hilarious, unique, and essential for fans of the series.
