Review ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them’ Marvelous Escapism

Monkeys Fighting Robots

David Yates’s Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them is a textbook example of cinematic escapism. What is cinematic escapism? It’s when someone checks out a film not because it’s the best film but because it transports the audience away from the trials and tribulations of everyday life (these days that’s not a bad thing). With all the political upheaval and turmoil that seems to be dominating the news, it’s nice to have a distraction that’s a delightfully engaging narrative which lifts the spirits of audience members.

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them finds it’s origins in the Harry Potter Universe. Why the sudden interest in diving back into a universe that we saw reached its conclusion five years ago? Harry Potter just isn’t a movie franchise; it’s a cultural phenomenon. Whether it’s magic wands, a Horcrux, or a patronus, fans crave anything that is remotely associated with the world of Harry Potter.

Caption: (L-r) EDDIE REDMAYNE as Newt, KATHERINE WATERSTON as Tina and COLIN FARRELL as Graves in Warner Bros. Pictures' fantasy adventure "FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM," a Warner Bros. Pictures release.

This is the film is inspired by a textbook that was first seen in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in 2001. The book was written by “magizoologist” Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), and it chronicles all the magical creatures that he’s encountered in his travels (including ones he’s even rescued). Newt goes to America in search of a new creature whose details he would like to add to his ever expanding reference work and bumps into Jacob (Dan Fogler). They soon partner up with Tina (Katherine Waterson), an ex-investigator for MACSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America) and her sister Queenie (Allison Sudol) who is a mind reading flapper.

The film is set in New York during the 1920’s. A period where wizards and “no-maj” (people who don’t have any magical abilities) lead separate lives. There is growing sentiment among a select group of “no-maj” who believed wizards should be suppressed. While this is unfolding, the head of security for MACUSA, played by Colin Farrell, has no interest in investigating the reports of these rogue “no-maj” groups as he’s focused on learning more about the “dark arts.” Farrell’s character seems to have taken a particular interest in Gellert Grindelwald, a powerful dark wizard who went to hiding after reigning terror in Europe.

It certainly was intriguing to see Yates tackle themes that were uncharacteristic of previous Potter films. While Scamander certainly wants to research as many magical creatures as possible for his new book, he’s motivated more by his love for the animals themselves. Even when the case that he holds them in is confiscated during his arrest by the MACUSA, his only concern is whether or not his animals would be harmed. When he put himself in harm’s way (in hopes of tracking down Farrell’s character), he makes sure that first and foremost his animals are taken care of.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them also provides a unique commentary on race relations. For example, we have wizards, “no-maj,” and the faction of “no-maj” that wants to suppress the wizards. The Wizards are dedicated to keeping things separate and know that if they are discovered that it would be an all-out war. The “No-maj” are for the most part oblivious to the world of wizardry. However, when Jon Voight’s character finally realizes what’s going on, he wants them “taken” down.  The faction of “No-maj” who believes in the suppression of the Wizards power and most important of assimilation show no willingness to listen to reason. Not one of these “groups” takes the time to figure out how to co-exist with one another.  One could indeed extend the argument to our world, where most of our issues with race stem from a lack of understanding.

This is the first screenplay that J.K. Rowling has crafted for the Harry Potter Universe. I was taken back but how richly developed the characters were and furthermore how intricate the connections were from this film to the Harry Potter Universe. For example, there’s a scene where Newt is talking with Queenie, and she finds out he has a former girlfriend at Hogwarts who has the last name of Lestrange ( yes, that family). Hardcore Potter fans and average fans of the series should enjoy this film. If nothing else, escaping the trials of life for a few hours will be a welcome break for all.

The War to Come with The Surprise of ‘Thanos’ #1 (Spoilers)

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Before we dive into this piece, this isn’t a review. Simple version, go get Thanos #1 and come back. Thanos #1 is a great read with a powerful hook to it. If you don’t care about spoilers then feel free to hang out. For what I’m going to dive into, spoilers are needed. If you have read Thanos though, you’re going to get a lot out of this. I’m going to deep dive into this craziness and see if I can’t help digest the issue for you all. Fair warning again, there are spoilers in this piece. Let’s begin this journey, talk a bit about Thanos #1 and try and remotely fathom what’s going to happen next.

On with the show, as they say, Thanos #1 analysis begins now!

Thanos #1 Cover Marvel Comics

Jeff Lemire is one of those writers that if he’s writing something, I’ll usually give it a go. He’s that good yet I wasn’t sure if I was even going to pick this up. Now I’m doing an analysis on it because this issue blew my mind in a good way. You’re probably wondering why this works as well as it does, I’ll explain why Thanos works in my own way. It all starts with a build-up and catching up with our old friend Corvus Glaive from the Infinity event. He’s become a tough but respected ruler of a planet in the absence of Thanos. At this point, he’s gone and no one knows where he went off to. It’s a cool way to set the scene for Thanos and make use of a great character all at the same time.

Corvus Glaive King Thanos #1 Marvel Comics

Lemire put enough time in to build up Corvus Glaive for new and old readers to either enhance to get to know him. As you well know the name of the comic is Thanos, so let the return of Thanos begin. The best part of the return of Thanos is the usage of the title page, powerful lettering from Clayton Cowles to give extra impact to a great double page spread. A double page spread that only needed two words, “Thanos Returns”, and instantly you get chills.

This panel below shows the state of mind of Thanos at this point.

Thanos #1 Unhappy Thanos

What follows in these pages is a full blown battle and it is beautiful. Mike Deodato is the kind of artist that when he’s cutting loose, he cuts loose. Three pages of Deodato showing Thanos at full power. It’s cool that Lemire decided to add this in, it’s pure power at its finest. You let Deodato cut loose and even more let the colorist have a bit of fun too. Frank Martin does amazing color work throughout the issue but this battle is unreal. The violent reds and dark shadows illuminating Thanos in his rampage, oh it’s brilliant. It’s one of my favorite moments of the issue and that’s in a comic loaded with great moments.

Thanos ZAP! Thanos #1

Now we see how Thanos deals with Glaive. Glaive puts up a valiant fight, but he’s no match for Thanos. Lemire handles this well, Glaive doesn’t want to give up at all. Glaive isn’t a good person either, but at least he’s respected to a degree. Lemire’s building of this makes Glaive’s eventual downfall oddly tragic. When Thanos breaks Glaive’s blade he offers him death by Thanos or death by his own hand. Glaive chooses to end it all because Thanos makes it clear, it would be worse if the Mad Titan would do the job. You wouldn’t think, heck I didn’t think I could find it tragic but it is sad by the end. That Lemire evokes that emotion out of this is impressive. The scene of Thanos on his throne by Deodato is powerful to behold, colored by Martin with tragedy and darkness in tow.

Such a powerful panel, fitting for what is about to come.

thanos-1-marvel-comics-king

In the background of all of this with our lead character, there are other forces in motion as well. Tryco “Champion of the Universe” is on a mission from the son of Thanos, Thane to grab Starfox to take him back to Titan. There’s a massive amount of foreshadowing happening, as they might possibly be the “True Destroyers of the Galaxy” as Lemire says in the story.  I laughed as to how Tryco found Starfox by the way, it’s hilarious to see in the story, I can’t do it justice. Take note of this, Tryco is one of my favorite characters in the Marvel Universe. That Lemire is using Tryco and Starfox in this tale is a great addition. As Tryco has been given the chance to prove he’s the best in the universe, he’s going to kill Thanos. That’s not even the ultimate hook for this book either.

Now for the powerful hook mentioned in the opening paragraph.

Yes, I did mention there’s a powerful hook for this comic. After all, in any first chapter of a tale, you need a hook to keep the reader engaged. At the end of the issue, it is revealed that Thane is working with Death. Thane isn’t sure if their plan will work, even with Tryco and Eros (Starfox) in tow. Yes, Thanos is practically a God but Death knows something no one else does, Thanos is dying. No one ever thought it possible but now Thanos is dying for unknown reasons. That my friends is a good hook.

Now the Thanos story gets a curveball and boy is it fun.

Thanos is dying, Thane and Death have a plan, and The Champion of the Universe and Starfox are on the way, I’d say the stakes are high from the start. Jeff Lemire stacks the deck high and doesn’t let up right up until the end of the issue. Right now I have to say, I will be curious how far Lemire will take this, or will be allowed to take this. If Mike Deodato and Frank Martin stay on for awhile, this series is going to have an art team to match this high-end story. I know they won’t kill Thanos but I wonder how long this will play out? That’s going to be the fun part of this story. I cannot wait.

Now to figure out why this works.

Now, why did this work? Lemire keeps you engaged throughout the issue and doesn’t even hint at a possible weakness in the character until the end. Lemire managed to make it easy for someone unfamiliar with Cosmic Marvel to get into the book. Deodato’s art is powerful and doesn’t let up. It’s dark, foreboding, while not being afraid to show fun where it counts. Lemire scored an amazing artist and Deodato captures the scale of this story perfectly. The same with Frank Martin, my word these colors are rich and powerful, fitting the tone of the tale. There is levity here but Thanos impending death can only lead to more complications along the way.

No one asked for another Thanos series but I’m glad we have it. With the material it is exploring, this series will have legs. It’s why I didn’t want to do a typical review of this, it would be much shorter than what we have here now. I wanted to talk about this book in detail, really deep dive into the storytelling. We’re only in chapter one of a much larger journey, that’s exciting to me.

Now take note, if you read this not caring about spoilers and this got you curious about the book, that is awesome. You’re getting characters infrequently used in major roles, a dark new twist on Thanos, and more to come. Who would have thought that this series would turn out to be a great one? I’m pleasantly surprised in the best way possible.

Review: ‘Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable’: Episode 34

Monkeys Fighting Robots

July 15th (Thurs) Part 4

SPOILER ALERT

This episode starts with one intense moment and moves into another with little time to take a breath. It’s episodes like this which help to remind the audience why they put up with the generic villain of the week Stands which can show up now and again. Eventually you get moments of so much spectacle, you don’t want to turn away.

First up Rohan has to deal with Cheap Trap, who will kill him if anyone sees his back. It’s also revealed Cheap Trap’s only ability is to talk but apparently this doesn’t mean he’s simply limited to communicating with humans. Rohan soon finds himself stuck between a rock and a hard place with little hope of surviving without some kind of back up.

Though the first part of this episode is good, the second half really takes off. Kira is unable to handle his psychotic nature to kill and decides he must find relief. Unfortunately, he’s not aware Hayato, the son of the man he is impersonating is watching and recording his every movement. What follows are some of the most fierce scenes of pressure ever as Kira decides to join his son in the bathroom for some family bonding through bathing. It becomes abundantly clear if Hayato doesn’t find a way of getting a hold of Josuke and the other Stand users in the near future, he won’t be around for the finale.

Events in this series keep getting more heightened as it nears its ending. With only five episodes left to go in this arc it’s hard to tell who will make it out alive. As it’s already been shown, it’s not a good idea to get on Kira’s bad side and Hayato has found a way to paint a target on his back. With the next episode title called “Bites the dust, part 1” there is a very good chance Kira is going indulge in his primal urges for murder once more.

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable is streaming on Crunchyroll.

How Groot Will Grow As A Character In Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2

Monkeys Fighting Robots
Groot Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2
Groot and Drax will return Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Despite existing for 56 years, Groot didn’t become a household name until 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Thanks to Marvel Studios and Vin Diesel, Groot is now a pop culture icon. Now, he will continue his growth as a character in Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.2.

According to Collider, Groot has a new arc in the new film. While this is the same Groot, he will have a personality that is noticeably different from the last movie.

Groot
I wonder when Groot will grow to full size in the next film

“He couldn’t be more naive as Baby Groot,” says Diesel. “I always think of the Groot that we saw on the first Guardians as a college-level Groot, so he’s not fully grown yet, but he’s a man.”

This Groot serves as a reset version of the character, and he will have to regain his skills. “And once he sacrifices himself at the end of the movie, now he has to start all over, so to speak, but we’re gonna see this goofy, adorable, baby Groot thing running around the screen and just learning as he goes.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 trailer

This collaborates Kevin Feige’s previous comments, in which he reveals Groot will retain his memories from the last film. “He’s not mentally a baby, he is still Groot,” says Feige. “I sort of equate it to Spock circa the end of Search for Spock and The Voyage Home.”

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 is coming to theatres on May 5, 2017.

Emilia Clarke Cast In Han Solo Spin-Off Movie

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Game-of-Thrones

Emilia Clarke is making a jump from Essos to the galaxy far far away. She will be appearing in the Han Solo movie.

According to Starwars.com, the Game of Thrones actress is joining the cast of the film. Clarke will appear alongside Alden Ehrenreich, who is playing the young Han. Donald Glover of Community fame is going to play the young Lando Calrissian.

Han Solo

Little is known about who Clarke will be playing. The article states, “Clarke’s role will round out a dynamic cast of characters that Han and Chewie will encounter on their adventures.”

The movie takes place 10 years before the events of A New Hope. Glover’s casting hints the film might show how Han won the Millennium Falcon from Lando. This could involve a game of sabacc, which has long been a part of Star Wars lore.

Clarke is reprising her role as Daenrys in Game of Thrones‘ seventh season, which is now in production.

The Han Solo film is aiming for a 2018 release.

Old Tomorrow Beer: Monty’s Golden Ryed Ale – A Victorious Review

Monkeys Fighting Robots

I had thought I’d reviewed them all, but happily I was wrong as usual. When browsing my local LCBO today I noticed a cache of these distinctive 660 mL bottles at the register. A big fan of Old Tomorrow Beer’s other brews, I purchased one and put the super-sized bottle in my freezer for an hour.

Old Tomorrow is an up-and-coming brewery that operates out of Toronto. As with their other brews, this one celebrates Canadian greatness. In the case of Monty’s Golden Ryed Ale, Old Tomorrow Beer celebrates Jon Montgomery’s 2010 gold-medal win and subsequent celebratory pitcher chugging. Let’s see if this ryed ale is as delicious as beating the Americans in the (winter) Olympics. Given that this beer has been aged in Canadian whisky and oak, it has a chance.

Old Tomorrow Beer: Monty’s Golden Ryed Ale – First Sip

Monty’s Golden Ryed Ale pours a rosy-golden colour. It’s slightly opaque with a thick layer of foam that sticks around. I can smell the rye as I take my first sip, and its thick mouthfeel promotes its honey flavour that lingers until you take your next sip. This beer leaves a lot of lacing on the inside of the conical pint glass I’m drinking it from. Unlike the lingering foam, this brew’s honey flavour disappears quickly, changing to a semi-bitter finish.

Old Tomorrow Beer: Monty’s Golden Ryed Ale – Last Sip

In order to avoid claims of elitism, I drank the remainder of this tasty rye-aged brew from the bottle. I missed its unique aroma and soft layer of foam, but it still tasted great. At 5.5% ABV, this isn’t a strong beer, but you’ll want to avoid having too many of them, especially since they’re larger than your average beer. This isn’t such a heavy beer that you need to enjoy it with food, but I’d never speak against drinking it alongside a bag of your favourite salty chips, or some dark chocolate.

Let The Speculation Begin: Could a Walking Dead Movie Work?

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The speculation is in full swing, Scott M. Gimple has put the word out that The Walking Dead could be a movie someday. As the show is already in its seventh season, this looks to be a distant possibility. Yet in the land of what if, could it actually happen? Considering the series has years of material ahead of it, it won’t be happening for awhile. How would a movie work though? That’s what I’ve been pondering in my mind, how in the world would this work? Let’s try and ponder this a minute as I dive into this and try and figure out if a Walking Dead movie is even necessary. At this stage of the game, while it is successful, success on TV and success in the movies are two different things.

The Walking Dead is a Strong Franchise but could it translate to the big screen?

For one thing, The Walking Dead is a franchise that makes more sense as a TV series. Sure you can make anything into a movie but this is one comic that would be tough to translate to movies. It would be strange to see as a film series. Sure you could recast the characters from the comics for a movie, but why? People have spent seven seasons with these characters on TV and the comic has been around for thirteen years. For a comic audience, you might be able to get away with a movie and be fine. A majority of viewers of a potential movie would be coming from TV and that would be tough as nails to pull off. Why tough as nails? The cast of the Walking Dead series is just as important as anything else.

I just don’t know if a movie is even necessary.

Outside of the story of the show, a lot of the cast of that show is one that people have gotten to know over the seven seasons. While the cast has had many changes, the ones that have remained are still popular people in the show. I do have one idea that could work for a potential movie, set it as a trilogy off the bat. The series did change aspects of the comic, maybe make Andrea a stronger character for example. Not going to kid you if a movie made Andrea a strong character in a movie series, it could help. Then again though even with improvements to characters and a bigger budget, there’s only so much more you could do.

I’m not against the idea of a movie but with every villain that’s in the show, it would be tough to build as a two or even three-hour-long movie. You could make Shane the first villain of sorts in the first movie then have the next two of a trilogy build The Governor. There’s a lot you could do but still, the TV series has done such a good job with the comics, why a movie?

If The Walking Dead ends up being a movie, I’m not against the idea. I don’t think it’s needed but if they do it, I’m game to give this a shot. If Robert Kirkman wants his baby on the big screen, more power to him.
