Review: ‘Dumbing of Age’ Book One: This Campus Is A Friggin’ Escher Print

Monkeys Fighting Robots

David Willis is a staple of the still-young webcomic world, and one of its most dynamic members. From 1996’s Roomies! to the alien-fighting It’s Walky! to the nerdy toy-store slice-of-life comic Shortpacked!, his “Walkyverse” has been a constantly-evolving beast. In late 2010, he rebooted the entire continuity with the Dumbing of Age webcomic. The characters he’d introduced and slowly developed throughout the Walkyverse were given variants of their backstories, stripped of their science-fiction traits, and put back into college for a fresh look and a new story.

As Dumbing of Age continues into its sixth year and seventh book, I’ve decided to review and recap its arcs from the beginning. The first book is titled This Campus Is A Friggin’ Escher Print, and is available for purchase here.

DUMBING OF AGE WEBCOMIC RECAP: MOVING IN

Dumbing of Age opens with Joyce Brown, a home-schooled fundamentalist, moving in on her first day of secular college. She’s the protagonist of the strip, and a confessed autobiographical character.

Dumbing of Age, Joyce Brown, Sarah

Other characters are also introduced, as well as their obvious conflicts. Dorothy and Danny are together, and clearly won’t be for much longer, since he followed her to university against her wishes. Jennifer ‘Billie’ Billingsworth was a big drinker and a party girl in high school. She doesn’t want anything to do with her ‘uncool’ childhood friend Walky. Sarah, the sophomore, had to room with a stoner last year and thinks Joyce’s fundamentalism is honestly a step up. And Ruth, the tyrannical RA of the girl’s wing, already has it out for Billie, who can’t get hold of her mysterious roommate to sign the roommate’s agreement.

OH WHAT A TANGLED WEB…

Like any good soap opera slice-of-life, the Dumbing of Age webcomic balances several storylines at once, linking them with each other. Dorothy breaks it off with Danny on their first night at college. The upset and reeling Danny runs into a group of drunk and rowdy jocks. A mysterious vigilante rescues him from a beating and identifies herself as Amazi-Girl! After a date with Joyce goes horribly wrong, Danny’s roommate Joe ends up the center of a political scandal. He’s the co-star of a sex video with a congresswoman’s little sister.

Things get interesting when both Billie and Dorothy try out as journalists for the school paper. Billie chases the Amazi-Girl story, and Dorothy interviews Joe about his scandal. Her other intended interviewee, Roz, tells her to come to a party on-campus. She brings Joyce with her for emotional support, and Billie invites herself.

Dumbing of Age, Joyce Brown

Joyce is alone at the party, and is roofied by a pastor’s son, but she’s saved from the would-be rapist by Sarah with a baseball bat. The book ends with Sarah looking after the sleeping Joyce and waiting for morning.

REVIEW: A STRONG START

The Dumbing of Age webcomic is one of my favourites. It’s one of only two or three that I’ve followed from its first days. The cast is large, but the characters are both physically distinct, and socially diverse. I can’t name many comics off the top of my head that brings up race, religious fundamentalism, sexual freedoms and gender representation within the first year of running.

More than anything else, it’s funny. Dumbing of Age manages to be comedically sociopathic without actually veering into offensive humor. Some of the most memetic lines include “I NEED MY FEMURS TO LIVE…” and it’s a testament to both Dave Willis’s writing and artistic talent, and his care towards social issues, that he hasn’t relied on cheap shock humor instead.

However, the balance of humor and drama doesn’t quite stabilize until near the end of the first book. It’s hard to know right away which parts to take seriously and which parts to laugh at. For example, this early strip gets less and less funny. While an RA throwing a student across the room seems entertaining at first, the humor starts to leave a bad taste in the mouth. It’s important to note that this is at least partially deliberate. Ruth is funny, but she’s not entirely comfortable, either.

Dumbing of Age gets off to an excellent start, and the characters and storylines have only improved from Book One.

Are Solicitations Hurting Marvel Comics?

Monkeys Fighting Robots

It’s no secret that Marvel Comics is in a losing battle with their rival, DC Comics. The current era of Marvel is riddled with excess and poor judgment. They’re struggling to maintain a large portion of their readers. Along with event overkill, fleeing talent, and constant rebooting, are solicitations hurting Marvel Comics as well?

**Marvel Spoilers Lie Ahead**

Marvel Now Divided

Comic book solicitations are a tool for publishers to give fans a taste of what’s around the corner. It’s a way for companies to tease upcoming projects, preview new titles, and allow fans to budget accordingly. In Marvel’s case, solicitations are a desperate attempt at keeping readers interested.

Instead of enticing readers to come back next month with a cliffhanger, reveal, or a powerful enough story, Marvel tries to buy goodwill through solicitations. They’re constantly getting ahead of themselves too; scheduling delays no doubt play a big part in that.

For example, before Civil War II had even begun to wrap-up, Marvel was already busy unveiling an entire new line of unfamiliar titles. Books like Infamous Iron Man had started before CW II was over, containing major spoilers to the massive event’s conclusion. This forces readers into an uncomfortable situation. Even before the title was released, details surfaced through solicitations.

Marvel Civil War II 8

This compromises the potential of that final chapter. How much more effective would Tony Stark’s fate have been, not knowing that the two future Iron Man titles did not feature him?

The Clone Conspiracy was another instance in which the solicitations ruined the narrative’s potential. After the big reveal that Ben Reilly was behind the whole thing, Marvel announced an ongoing Scarlet Spider series. Knowing that Ben Reilly not only survives the event, but also becomes a hero, stripped any weight that The Clone Conspiracy‘s ending could have had.

The massive attempt at winning X-Men fans back, called ResurreXion, was announced well before Inhumans Vs. X-Men had even started. What was the incentive to even read this event? IvX was just one last obstacle in the way of the X-Men comics we were promised.

What’s the alternative? I’m no business or marketing major (clearly), but this obviously isn’t working. If I had a say at Marvel, I’d try a more viral approach to generating buzz and unveiling developments. Let these announcements happen within the books themselves. Let the readers start the conversation and then make official announcements afterwards.

X-Men Prime 1 cvr

Imagine finding out about ResurreXion in the back of IXV #6. Would Marvel have really lost that many potential readers by not showing their hand preemptively? Allow those readers to hit the internet and social circles on their own to initially spread the word. Marvel could then swoop in and hit us all with the official announcement. This also cuts down on how long fans have to wait for this big new thing on the horizon.

If Marvel was truly in-touch with their readers, they could save their announcements. Keep the audience on the edge of their seat, with no idea what to expect in the story they’re reading. Allow us to discover new developments and major changes along with the characters. Inject these comics with shock and mystery again.

Of course, this could backfire in some cases. The reveal could be a misfire and without having gone public Marvel could find themselves much deeper into development of a project that caught no one’s attention. Honestly though, is that really so different from how things are now? It’s not like fans were begging for Secret Empire, or another event in general. Yet, it’s about to consume Marvel’s entire line of comics.

Marvel Secret Empire

All comic book publishers release solicitations; Marvel just does it poorly. It devalues their product and struggles to generate the right kind of attention. DC Rebirth was a universe-wide initiative that has, so far, been a home run. DC has generated so much positivity without spoiling their stories. People are talking about what is happening in DC comics, not what is happening to them.

All is not lost for Marvel however. They can easily parody DC’s recent success and salvage their fan base. It wasn’t long ago that The New 52 was causing the comic book community to collectively groan month after month. They might already be gearing up for a similar overhaul with Generations.

marvel generations

Of course, we could all avoid spoilers by ignoring any and all solicitations or announcements, right? What do you think about Marvel’s solicitations? How many current Marvel titles are you reading? Are you looking forward to the next era, or are you content with this one? Let us know in the comments below!

New ‘Justice League’ Character Poster For The Flash Released

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Warner Bros. and DC Comics just released an epic teaser for The Flash in Zack Snyder’s Justice League and now we’ve been given the official character poster, offering a new look at the Fastest Man Alive.

This poster gives us what might be our best look yet at The Flash’ costume. I’ve liked the look of this character in each of the images we’ve seen before this poster but honestly, seeing it in this poster and matching it to the Batman and Aquaman posters it’s easily my favorite costume.

‘Helena Crash’ #1: A Future Without Coffee is Terrifying

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Helena Crash dares us to picture a future where coffee is illegal. For many of you, reading that sentence is terrifying. In this world that our character lives in, coffee and other goods being illegal are part of her reality. That’s the hot point of this new series. Everything else populating this world is just as coffee fueled and more. In Helena’s adventures as a courier, you see aliens, people in amazing Mexican Wrestling Masks, and it is a beautiful world indeed. Join me on my journey into the future with Helena Crash. Coffee might be illegal there but I can only imagine what other surprises this comic has in store for us.

Helena Crash is pure magic in a comic book and now I am here to tell you why you need it in your life.

Helena Crash #1 Cover

In my search for a comic to electrify my world, Helena Crash fits the bill. Fabien Rangel Jr. and Warwick Johnson Cadwell have crafted a mad masterpiece of pure comic mayhem. Helena Crash’s adventures as a courier of certain goods, including the aforementioned illegal coffee, take her in many directions. The way Rangel Jr. crafts her personality is a lot of fun. She’s got a rebel spirit about her and I like that a lot. What was interesting is that I got a Tank Girl vibe right off the bat from this series. Lo and behold Cadwell did art for Tank Girl at one point and it clicked from there. In the writing of this, well Rangel Jr.’s time on Space Riders and more take this beyond the initial Tank Girl vibe I got. It’s got such a vibrant energy to it that’s absolutely infectious.

What Rangel Jr. does in one issue of Helena Crash in building this world is astonishing. If you can give me a good idea of your world in the span of one issue, you’ve done well. When you see what Cadwell does with his art here in bringing it to life, it’s wonderful. For all the stuff that’s illegal in this future, it’s so lively and lived in. Rangel Jr. gives the words and the characterization, while Cadwell illuminates the life of Helena Crash and makes it marvelous. A lot of why this works too is as much as Helena is a great character, it’s in the backgrounds and all the characters in it. Even the supporting cast has a life of its own, there’s one character in particular named Rojo that I can’t wait to know more about.  I love a good villain and I can’t wait to see what he’s up to.

Helena Crash #1 Introduction IDW

This might just be one of my favorite new comics right now. Helena Crash is my absolute jam and I am not hiding it at all.

Helena Crash #1 Explodo IDW

This is normally where I’d put more of a focus on the art but the art blends so well in the overall storytelling for this. Helena Crash is someone who’s been through a lot yet she has a sort of optimism to her. Cadwell’s way of drawing her works wonders in bringing this character to life. One such example, the first time she drinks coffee and you see where she lives, you get such a great idea of her character. She’s cluttered but relaxed, and seeing her eclectic collection of guns and antiques is perfect. It’s in the little touches that help make Helena Crash such a joy to get to know. Note, Rangel Jr. accomplishes this exploration of Helena in one issue and there’s still more to know, I’m excited.

I think for me this comic is refreshing as to how different it is. The comic feels different, looks different, and has a totally unique vibe that I adore. Take a special note of Ironbark’s lettering to this comic that fits this world perfectly. Helena Crash is the total package. It’s a good kind of different in comics that we could use more of in this day and age. As I finished this comic I left smiling and excited to see where this will go from here. It dares to be weird, dares to go off the beaten path and that my friends is a good thing. My goodness is it ever a good thing.

Did I mention this comic makes me really happy? Seriously Helena Crash makes me really happy.

If you’re one of those people who is on the hunt for something new, Helena Crash fits the bill. It’s smart, fun, and delightful. Go forth and buy it for yourself and embrace the wonderful world that is Helena Crash.

While the image offers us a new look at the League, probably the highlight of this image for me is the new look at The Flash. I’ve liked the costume in each of the images I’ve seen so far but seeing him next to the other heroes I really like the costume and the look of this Flash.

Star Trek: Discovery – The USS Discovery Gets A Captain and A Cadet

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Amid ongoing rumours about Sonequa Martin-Green of AMC’s The Walking Dead having a lead role in Star Trek: Discovery, a captain and a cadet have just beamed aboard. And, as before, a spike in rumours about Martin-Green’s involvement overshadowed these confirmed casting announcements. I’m calling the rumours of Martin-Green’s involvement as such only because there has been no official announcement from CBS or Paramount Television that Martin-Green will be on Discovery. But, this photo that surfaced two days ago of several already-confirmed Discovery cast members partying with Martin-Green at James Frain‘s birthday is a good indicator that Martin-Green will indeed be on the show. Whether she will play the lead role of “Lieutenant Commander Rainsford,” as IMDb reports, is another question altogether – but, yeah, she probably will.

Discovery
“Honestly, Captain, if you can’t remember my name, just ask.”

I’ve even heard rumours that Lt. Cmdr. Rainsford will be an homage to “Number One,” the canonically nameless first officer (played by Majel Barrett in Star Trek‘s pilot episode “The Cage”) who served aboard the USS Enterprise under Captain Pike. Now that would be cool. If Discovery‘s writers did base Martin-Green’s character on Number One, I hope they used fellow Canadian John Byrne‘s Star Trek: Crew as source material.

Star Trek: Discovery – “But Who’s the Trekkin’ Captain?!”

Discovery
“Who’s your favourite Star Trek captain, Lorcas or April?”

“Rumours” aside, the announcement that Jason Isaacs, most famous for playing Lucius Malfoy from the Harry Potter movies, will play Captain Lorcas of the USS Discovery is probably a welcome one to many Trek fans. Beyond simply having a varied résumé that includes six Harry Potter films, Isaacs’s credits include voicing Ra’s al Ghul, Lex Luthor, an assassination target in Hitman, and a couple of voices in Star Wars Rebels. So, based on his past with pop-culture, Trek fans can probably rest assured that Isaacs will take this role as seriously as he has others.

We’ll just have to wait and see what the relationship between the USS Discovery and the USS Shenzhou, and both ships’ captains, has to offer. Check out one of my previous articles for more on the Shenzhou‘s captain and crew.

Star Trek: Discovery – “Whoa, Tilly, Take Your Time”

Discovery
“Red hair is fine, just don’t wear any red shirts.“

The aforementioned cadet that will appear on Star Trek: Discovery is named “Tilly.” Nothing yet on whether this will be the cadet’s first or last name, but we do know that Tilly will be played by Mary Wiseman, a recent graduate of Juilliard who has appeared in Difficult People and Louis C.K., Zach Galifianakis, and Jonathan Krisel’s Baskets. As with the other confirmed characters, little is known about Tilly aside from the fact that she is in her final year at Starfleet Academy and has been assigned to the USS Discovery.

So, until the next casting announcement (I think the only cast member left to announce is Sonequa Martin-Green), keep your shields up and your phasers on stun.
