Monkeys Fighting Robots

The Cloverfield franchise is expanding quickly, with Cloverfield: God Particle expected to release in April or sooner if a Netflix deal is worked out, a fourth film has emerged Cloverfield: Overlord with a release date of October 26, 2018.

According to a report by Slashfilm, Overlord is directed by Julius Avery and stars Wyatt Russell and Jovan Adepo.

The report also includes a synopsis of the movie:
On the eve of D-Day, American paratroopers are dropped behind enemy lines to carry out a mission crucial to the invasion’s success. But as they approach their target, they begin to realize there is more going on in this Nazi-occupied village than a simple military operation. They find themselves fighting against supernatural forces, part of a Nazi experiment.

A giant monster, a fallout shelter, a space station, and now World War II; the Cloverfield universe is insane.

God Particle is expected to have a trailer during Super Bowl LII. The story follows a group of astronauts who make a horrifying discovery while on a space station orbiting around the Earth.

God Particle is directed by Julian Onah and stars David Oyelowo, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Ziyi Zhang, Elizabeth Debicki, Daniel Brühl and Chris O’Dowd.

Sam Raimi to Direct with Lin-Manuel Miranda on “Kingkiller Chronicles”

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Sam Raimi, director of the original Spider-Man trilogy and Evil Dead series will direct the film adaptation of fantasy behemoth The Kingkiller Chronicles. According to Variety, Raimi will return from his directing hiatus to work on Name of the Wind, based on Patrick Rothfuss’ book with the same title. Raimi will work with Lin-Manuel Miranda, who has already signed on as executive producer and “musical mastermind.”Sam Raimi Directing

Raimi, Miranda, and the Story of Tonight

Neither Lionsgate nor Raimi has commented on the project yet. However, Miranda and Rothfuss have expressed mutual admiration. Miranda (Moana, In the Heights) has admitted that the book series directly influenced him while writing his smash musical Hamilton.

Rothfuss is yet to finish the third and final book in the trilogy, which fans (including Miranda) have eagerly awaited for years.Rothfuss and Miranda

The Expanding Chronicles

Raimi is the latest talent to enter negotiations with Lionsgate on this project. The production company has plans for both a feature film adaptation and television series tie-in. While the film will adapt Name of the Wind directly, the television series will take place one generation before the book. Miranda’s contract also reportedly includes an option to develop a stage production.

Get ready for the already massive world of the Chronicles to get even bigger.

The Kingkiller Chronicles explores the fantasy world of Temerant through the eyes of Kvothe, an aging pub owner with a legendary past. After childhood tragedy thrusts him from life on the road, Kvothe sets out to make a name for himself with nothing more than his natural musical talent and penchant for story-telling. He trains at the legendary University in arcane magic. He spends time in the land of the Fae. He develops his skills as an assassin. And that’s just the beginning.

Rothfuss will also work as an executive producer. Lindsey Beer has also joined the team writing the script for the film, currently titled The Kingkiller Chronicle. Beer also worked on Transformers: The Last Knight. She also adapted Chaos Walking and wrote an adaptation of Dungeons and Dragons, set for a 2021 release (TOR).

No release date has been announced for either the film or television adaptations of The Kingkiller Chronicles.

Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood ran from 1968 to 2001 for 898 episodes. Rogers passed away in 2003 at the age of 74.

Try to read the lyrics to Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood without singing them.

It’s a beautiful day in this neighborhood,
A beautiful day for a neighbor,
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?

It’s a neighborly day in this beautywood,
A neighborly day for a beauty,
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?

I have always wanted to have a neighbor just like you,
I’ve always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you.

So let’s make the most of this beautiful day,
Since we’re together, we might as well say,
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?
Won’t you be my neighbor?

Won’t you please,
Won’t you please,
Please, won’t you be my neighbor?

OTCC: Ryan Stegman and Nick Bradshaw Interviews

Monkeys Fighting Robots

We caught up with two of the most talented creators to put pencil to paper at the 2018 Orlando Toy and Comic Convention (OTCC) on Sunday, January 28, in Ryan Stegman and Nick Bradshaw.

This year’s event featured creators like Stegman (Superior Spider-Man), Bradshaw (Wolverine and the X-Men), Tony Moore (The Walking Dead), Ryan Ottley (Invincible), Billy Tucci (Harley Quinn), Frank Tieri (Black Knight) and Tim Townsend (Ultimate X-Men), among other guests. There was also a laundry list of exhibitors, making up over 150 tables and, with VIP admission, you were able to grab one of four exclusive prints to get Jisigned for FREE by their creators that were in attendance.

Check out our interviews with multitasking extraordinaires, Stegman and Bradshaw below, as they wrestled with answering our questions, sketching and signing autographs.

Ryan Stegman

(Marvel | Twitter | Facebook | Instagram | Blogspot | Deviant | Cadence)

MFR: “Was Spider-Man a character you had previously aspired to do, prior to taking on Superior Spider-Man?”

RS: “He was a character I had always drawn, even as a kid, for free. Now, as an adult, he’s a character that I get paid to do. So, yeah, it’s been great.”

MFR: “What is your favorite cover that you have done for Spider-Man?”

RS: “I’m extremely proud of the Superior Spider-Man #1 cover. It was everywhere for a while. My son has a hat with the print on it and I saw posters and t-shirts in the mall. It was a bit strange for me, but really exciting at the same time.”

MFR: “What is it like, being able to produce all of this great art, that is beloved by fans all over the world, but also by your son?”

RS: “Man, it’s so cool. We were on the plane yesterday to come here and he was drawing Spider-Man for me in different ways and kept showing them to me. His enthusiasm for the character and for what I do for a living is really neat for me.”

MFR: “Are you working on anything upcoming that you can actually share with us?”

RS: “No! I can’t talk about anything (laughs). It’s all secret right now, but I have some really cool stuff that will actually be announced relatively soon, I think.”

Nick Bradshaw

(Marvel | Twitter | Instagram | Site | KwanChang)

MFR: “You have left your mark on numerous covers with Marvel, any particular one that your are extremely fond of?”

NB:Wolverine and the X-Men was probably my favorite project that I was part of, just because I’m such a huge fans of mutants, but also because it was just right up my ally. Doing Spidey was really cool for me as well because I was able to draw that classic Peter Parker-type stuff. I wish I could’ve spent a little more time on that one, but it was definitely fun. I had the option to redesign the villains as well, but I told myself, nope, those classic designs were the best. When you love the characters, it shows. I was happy that Marvel let me just do my thing.”

MFR: “Considering the popularity of the Guardians of the Galaxy films, what has the experience been like to have had that run on the comic series?”

NB: “I’m a huge cosmic Marvel fan, stuff like Captain Marvel. I’m glad to see all the movies being tied together because it’s created this nuisance. As far as the comics, when I was asked if I wanted that five-issue run, I didn’t have to think about it, I was like, ‘Yeah!’. I’m totally on board with being able to play with these characters. It was a lot of fun.”

MFR: “Is there anything that you have worked on that has popped back up into your mind lately that has reminded you why you love doing what you do?”

NB: “Yeah, back to that Spidey stuff. Being able to draw the classic villains like the Lizard and Sandman. That was my favorite cover that I have gotten to do for Marvel, I think. I went crazy with it. When I get that kind of freedom with characters, that’s when I really have a blast.”

MFR: “Any upcoming projects that you would like to share with us?”

NB: “Truth be told, I keep asking for interiors, but Marvel loves how well my covers are selling. In December I did something like 20-plus covers that are going to be solicited over the next few months. I’ve been looking to link up with Jim Zub and maybe pitching a few idas to Marvel. So, we’ll see. It’s an exciting time right now for the publisher though. It’s bringing back classic characters and looks, but also keeping the awesome characters that have come along. A lot of fun storylines are coming and it’s exciting to see what’s in store.”

Cosplay was out in full force at OTCC on Sunday. Check out some of our favorites below.

Be on the lookout for some exciting new projects coming from all three of these creators. You can also take a look back at their respective bodies of work via the comic book database: Stegman (2005-present) and Bradshaw (2003-present).

UNSANE Trailer: Claire Foy Just Might Be Crazy in Steven Soderbergh’s New Thriller

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Things may or may not be what they seem in Unsane, the new psychological thriller from Steven Soderbergh, the hardest working retiree in the universe.

Unsane has a new trailer, and it is unnerving. A.F. It really seems to be tapping into those fears most of us have had, like what if we were in prison or a mental institution for something we didn’t do? But what if… we did do the thing? Anyway, check this out:

Jonathan Bernstein & James Greer wrote Unsane, which centers on a young woman (Foy) who is involuntarily committed to a mental institution where she is confronted by her greatest fear — but is it real or is it a product of her delusion?

It’s a rather straightforward premise, and it was also shot in secret using an iPhone last year. It seems the auteur has gotten a third wind in his career and is ready to unleash some awesome work over the next few years.

Claire Foy is delightful in The Crown, and appears to be in a whole different gear here. And if you notice in the trailer, you will spot the most underused actress in Hollywood: Juno Temple.

Unsane also stars Joshua Leonard, Jay Pharoah and Amy Irving. It will hit theaters March 23.

DC on CW Weekly Review: Jailbirds and Outsiders Unite

Monkeys Fighting Robots

This series will be a brief, semi-comedic review of the CW superhero shows. You can check out last week’s review post here. The only shows discussed will be ‘Arrow’, ‘Flash’, and ‘Supergirl’. There WILL be some spoilers discussed, so only look at the reviews you’re up to date on!

1. Arrow, “We Fall” (Jan 25th)

ARROW is picking up steam as it broadens its scope of the Arrowverse. Separating Team Arrow and The Outsiders allows the show to focus a bit more on all the characters (well, except for Diggle). While The Outsiders being defined by distrusting everyone is getting old, they’re still cool characters. Vigilante being a double agent makes more sense than him being a villain, but the idea of Black Canary getting back together with him is boring. The Oliver-William feels repetitive, though this seems to be a step towards resolving it. Ending the episode on a defeat is also a nice touch, as it humanizes Oliver, showing that he’s not invulnerable. While Felicity’s hyperspeed explanation of… something to do with Cayden James’ dead son did nothing to clear up the situation, it’ll be interesting to see how the “Arrow killed Cayden’s son” story evolves.

SCORE: 7.5/10 Electric Elevators

WEEKLY WIN TALLY:

The Flash: 4.5 Weeks

Supergirl: 3.5 Weeks

Arrow: 2.5 Weeks

Yi Soon Shin: The Historical Comic Book Introduces A Vicious Villain

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The second part of Yi Soon Shin: Warrior and Defender adds a new layer of antagonism in the form of a vicious new antagonist. War is brutal and horrific. At the end of the opening chapter of this story about a Korean naval commander is some gruesome imagery. It’s reminiscent of the scene from Predator where they find the downed helicopter. It was indeed an intriguing end. But does the next chapter live up to the build-up?

Writing: Ornie Kompan
Art: Giovanni Timpano
Colors: Adriana De Los Santos
Letters: Joel Saavedra
Co-Writer/Editor: David Anthony Kraft

“Practice makes perfect.” – Baron Seo

WRITING

By the end of the first chapter, readers knew the name Baron Seo and seen his gruesome handiwork. So, when the next chapter begins with the quote above, readers know all too well what he’s talking about. The masterstroke of this moment, a page before the actual next part of the story begins, is that it adds to the terror we feel about a character we have yet to meet.

Chapter two opens again with the Japanese side of things. Two samurai leaders argue over their failing attempt at destroying the Korean people. It’s a heated, almost deadly debate, but it is soon turned on its head with a surprising revelation. In walks Baron Seo, who takes note of this once-secret info and twists it to his advantage.

Kompan does a great job in the opening sequence of adding rich new layers to the story. Seo is filled out as a ruthless traitor to the Korean people. And now, knowing a secret about these two Japanese generals, Seo has a new level of leverage. However, Chapter 2 leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to our hero, Yi Soon Shin, who doesn’t really accomplish much or get new bits of exciting character development. At points, a purported love interest gives rise to some forgettable (sometimes cringe-worthy) dialogue.

ART

Pencils, inks, and colors continue the beautiful style set up in the first chapter. Timpano and colorist Santos combine forces to create a style that is muddy but without losing clarity. It’s a gritty vibe with some vibrant colors thrown in, particularly when it comes to the different significant characters. Yi Soon Shin’s bright red outfit stands out against the brown ships, blue seas, tan shorelines and green trees. It there’s one gripe about the book two chapters in, it’s the lettering which is functional but otherwise uninspired. An order near the end, one that should be a crisp, powerful set of words, looks like as if treated with a fisheye effect in photoshop.

CONCLUSION

The strengths of Yi Soon Shin continues to be the historical weight provided by the context of the story. Yi Soon moves along at a brisk pace, sets up arcs, and dives deeper into the world with each page. The lackluster lettering mentioned above doesn’t distract from the book. Overall, Yi Soon Shin’s epic story races forward into history and an eventual battle to end all battles.

DEEP BLUE SEA 2: The Sequel We Wanted, But Not Like This!

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Deep Blue Sea from 1999, with Thomas Jane, LL Cool J, and Samuel L. Jackson is a massive guilty pleasure of the shark/horror genre. The film had a worldwide gross of $160 million from a $60 million budget, with a profit of $100 million one would expect a sequel to get made, but that never happened.

Almost 20 years later, the worst kind of sequel, the “direct to video” has taken a chunk out of the Deep Blue Sea mythos.

Check out the Warner Bros. low-budget trailer below:

In DEEP BLUE SEA 2, shark conservationist Dr. Misty Calhoun (Danielle Savre) is invited to consult on a new, top secret project run by pharmaceutical billionaire Carl Durant (Michael Beach). When science meddles with the time-tested process of nature and nurture, the outcome can be deadly.

Directed by Darin Scott and written by Erik Patterson, Hans Rodionoff, and Jessica Scott; it’s like they didn’t even try to make a new film or expand the universe. In a world where Blumhouse can make a decent horror movie for $10 million, it’s a damn shame Deep Blue Sea ends up with a Video OnDemand sequel.

Box Office Report: MAZE RUNNER: THE DEATH CURE Wins The Weekend

Monkeys Fighting Robots

FOX did not hold press screenings for Maze Runner: The Death Cure and that is never a good sign for a film, with only 116 critics reviewing the movie, The Death Cure did not get crushed by Rotten Tomatoes. The third film in the trilogy did well at the January box office with $23.5 million for the weekend, on 3,787 screens.

The Death Cure already has a worldwide gross of $105.5 million from a $60 million budget. FOX has to be happy with this result after Dylan O’Brien’s severe injury on the set and the aftermath of filming delays. The movie was originally set to be released on February 17, 2017, a year later Thomas gets his finale.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle continues to be a machine, cranking out $16.4 million this past weekend on 3,553 screens. The Sony film now has a worldwide gross $822 million, that is more than Logan, Wonder Woman, IT, and Justice League made last year. With a $90 budget, Sony is taking that cash and greenlit a sequel for Christmas 2019.

Christian Bale’s Hostiles widened its release to 2,816 screens and earned $10.2 million over the weekend. The film is sitting at 72% on Rotten Tomatoes from 155 critics. There wasn’t a lot of buzz to this film; we are glad the moviegoers found it.

The Greatest Showman is surprisingly surviving from good word of mouth. The movie got swallowed up by Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle on its opening weekend, earning $8.8 million. This weekend, Hugh Jackman’s musical made $9.5 and now has a worldwide gross of $259 million from $84 million budget. FOX is looking rather profitable in the early goings of 2018.

What film do you see this weekend? Comment below.
