Duncan Jones made a splash a decade ago with Moon, the Sam Rockwell sci-fi drama. Since then, he’s been a little hit or miss with films like Source Code and Warcraft to his ledger. Finally, however, we have a Mute trailer, Jones’s latest sci-fi adventure loaded with a solid cast and an impressive visual palette.
Check out the trailer:
Berlin, the future, but close enough to feel familiar: In this loud, often brutal city, Leo (Alexander Skarsgård) – unable to speak from a childhood accident – searches for his missing girlfriend, the love of his life, his salvation, through dark streets, frenzied plazas, and the full spectrum of the cities shadow-dwellers. As he seeks answers, Leo finds himself mixed up with Cactus Bill (Paul Rudd) and Duck (Justin Theroux), a pair of irreverent US army surgeons on a mission all their own. This soulful sci-fi journey from filmmaker Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code, Warcraft) imagines a world of strange currencies in which echoes of love and humanity are still worth listening to.
This has an obvious Blade Runner vibe to it, but it looks to have a different story on its mind. It’s nice seeing Paul Rudd play a sci-fi weirdo as well. We’ll see when Mute hits Netflix February 23.
Depending on where you live, you are in for quite the treat, something that has not been seen in over 150 years, as the Super Blue Blood Moon is nearly upon us!
This is quite literally a once-in-a-lifetime event, a ‘lunar trifecta’, if you will, as the last time this combination formed in the sky was on March 31, 1866.
What is that, you ask? Well, it is when three-different phases of the moon combine for a grand spectacle in the sky. A ‘Supermoon’ phase is when the moon is closest to the Earth, a ‘Blue Moon’ is more common as it is just the second full moon of the month and a ‘Blood Moon’ is a total lunar eclipse, which makes the moon look red.
You will need to get up on Wednesday, January 31, 2018, at roughly dawn to see the unusual transformation. The West Coast of the United States will have the best view as folks will witness the complete overlap, while on the East Coast, viewers will see a partial overlap.
For more information regarding the SBBM, including times to see it best, based on where you live and how to view it if you don’t live in an ideal area, check out the NASA release for the event.
Black Mask Studios Gravetrancers #2, by M.L. Miller, James Michael Whynot, and Dee Cunniff escalates the tension, plot and disturbing imagery in another excellent issue.
Gravetrancers #2 Written by: M.L. Miller Art by: James Michael Whynot Colors by: Dee Cunniff Lettered by: Jim Campbell Published by: Black Mask Studios
Maribel and Anthony are siblings on a road trip to visit the grave of their father. And although both brother and sister have strong and mixed feelings when it comes to the man, both feel that maybe some sort of closure will come with the visit. But something far more sinister, frightening and disturbing awaits them at Burwood Cemetery. Maribel and Anthony are about to find out the proprietors of the cemetery, the Malrot family, harbor a different notion of life and death, one that will enter their lives like a hallucinatory nightmare that may never let go. And things get even more complicated as police Officer Veloz gets drawn into the horror.
Writing
The first issue of Gravetrancers was an excellent example of setting up a concept. But it is with this second chapter that writer M.L. Miller really unleashes heavily on the narrative drive and plot. The pacing here is fantastic. The three main characters are all separated, and the tension is built wonderfully as each character begins to face horrors of their own. This structure also allows the reader to be exposed to the different sorts of terrors that lurk within Burwood Cemetary, and how each family operates. The mythology is also further developed as is the history and past of the characters. And like all good mysteries, we get even more questions as we get answers. By the end of the issue, we are left with a hell of a cliffhanger and definitely wanting more.
Art
The art of James Michael Whynot, Dee Cuniff, and Jim Campbell is once again great. The team gets a chance to really create some nightmarish images here, as the hallucinatory aspect of the story takes center stage. The gore level is also raised. But the way the linework and colors work together give the pages a vibe that not just ‘gross-out’ The texture and feel of the pages here really reinforce that ‘EC Comics’ vibe promised in the first issue. There are also hints of psychedelic and underground art(think along the lines of work of Charles Burns). Some stand out images (included above) are characters drinking juice through their nose, a Re-Animator/Wolverine fusion/homage that is just plain fucking cool, and the design of Prim (seen below).
Conclusion
Seriously, dig up this book any way you can. It’s raw, gory, fun and infused with an attitude that makes it incredibly unique. Another great addition to Black Mask Studios excellent growing library.

This year’s Sundance Film Festival was a more low-key affair comparatively speaking. There was no sensation of the festival, not record-breaking deals. But there were still plenty of great films by all accounts, one of those being Hereditary. And if this trailer is any indication, this looks like a terrifying new horror.
The great Toni Collette headlines what looks to be an incredibly unnerving story about the evils we inherit from our parents? Sounds wild… check this out:
When Ellen, the matriarch of the Graham family, passes away, her daughter’s family begins to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry. The more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited. Making his feature debut, writer-director Ari Aster unleashes a nightmare vision of a domestic breakdown that exhibits the craft and precision of a nascent auteur, transforming a familial tragedy into something ominous and deeply disquieting, and pushing the horror movie into chilling new terrain with its shattering portrait of heritage gone to hell.
If the movie is half as unsettling as the trailer, this is going to be a harrowing watch.
Along with Collette, Hereditary also stars Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro, Ann Dowd, and long lost great Gabriel Byrne. It opens June 8.
Birthright, from co-creators Joshua Williamson and Andrei Bressan, is a graphic novel about a young son that goes missing, but returns a year later as a full-grown man that has transported from another world.
“Birthright is a giant fantasy epic, but at its core, is a story about family, and I’m really excited that a creative team who values those same storytelling elements will be adapting it,” Williamson said. “Andrei and I have put so much of ourselves into developing the Birthright comic and we know that Cinco, Ken and the entire Skybound team will do the same as they adapt it for the big screen. I’ve been a big fan of Universal ever since I was a kid, and I’ll lose it when I see the Universal logo in front of the Birthright movie.”
Since this project is newly-announced, there is no announcement of a release date.
Marvel Studios released the first trailer for Ant-Man and The Wasp featuring the introduction of Hope van Dyne as the Wasp Tuesday morning, ahead of its Super Bowl Sunday debut.
Watch the action-packed trailer below.
There’s a lot to take in there, but the film is definitely picking up right after the events of Captain America: Civil War, with Scott Lang/Ant-Man on some kind of release from captivity. The fall-out from those events also has affected Hank and Hope Pym, as they too seem to have been on the run and hiding. The movie also looks to be keeping the humor and irreverent attitude that made Ant-Man such a surprise hit.
What do you guys think? Are you excited for Ant-Man and The Wasp? And what do you hope to see in this anticipated sequel? Comment and discuss below.

Before I dive into the brunt of what this letter is about, let me just say this. I have no quarrel with you. When I dislike a video game outside of its story, graphics, characters, and controls, my dislike doesn’t and shouldn’t concern you. All of you involved in the creative process are just doing your jobs to the best of your abilities.
Lately, I’ve read articles and watched YouTube videos about how people’s criticisms are affecting you. When in reality it should be affecting those who publish your games. Publishers like Electronic Arts who utilize practices that catch the attention of state governments.
Practices that have cheapened my experience while playing your creations. DLC like Catwoman in Arkham City that couldn’t be accessed without pre-order or purchase. A character whose missions and arc were and are vital to the game’s overall story. Microtransactions disguised as “special events” like Destiny 2’s Dawning event.
An event that was a giant advertisement for the Eververse. The game’s store where players can exchange real-world currency in their wallet for loot boxes. This letter is not about you, or your work. This exists because of publishers using the production prices of your digital visions to justify their tactics.
I understand you have to spend money to make money, and making games is an expensive task. But when EA issues a statement to its shareholders about how its suspension of Star Wars: Battlefront II‘s microtransactions wouldn’t impact the company’s fiscal year, it’s hard for me to agree with their use of tactics. Especially with releases of various types of special editions of games.
Editions that have also been tiered in price as well, costing upwards of $80 to $100 and more. Why? Simply because in today’s video game industry, greed is good. Whereas the experience given to gamers comes second and at an added price. Which is sad because I’ve given good games lower ratings because their microtransactions, season passes, and other various forms of hiding of content behind a paywall take away from their otherwise good storytelling, gameplay, and characters.
It’s not your fault as a developer, it’s the publisher’s fault. They allow their shareholders to dictate what’s successful and what’s not, instead of allowing sales numbers and overall user experiences to do that. I especially feel for community managers who have to inform the public of decisions made by the higher-ups. Decisions that are often deemed unpopular and come with a barrage of disgusting and uncalled for verbal attacks and threats.
I’ve worked in customer service and it was often at times a thankless and mentally draining job. So when I say a game is bad or I become angry with having to spend more than $60 for a full experience, just know my issue is not with you. In fact, despite the negative press, 2017 was a solid year for games. Not to mention 2018 is full of games I cannot wait to play.
So keep on doing your job to the best of your ability, keep on creating worlds that push the boundaries of one’s imagination. Hopefully, in time the industry will correct itself and its priorities will change. But for now, just keep on doing you.
Sincerely,
Nick
P.S. Everyone from designers to voice actors should receive a portion of the overall profit a game they’ve worked on makes.
There was no better location to host a history-making WWE Royal Rumble pay per view event than the “City of Brotherly Love,” Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The 30th Annual Royal Rumble concluded a week of WWE celebration, which began with RAW 25 on Monday.
With the build-up and anticipation of this momentous event, it was no surprise that they kicked off the event with the WWE Championship handicap match, AJ Styles versus Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn. As usual, the match was simply “phenomenal,” as Styles successfully defended his title. And, of course, especially with Kevin Owens and his rash of controversial finishes, he complained to SmackDown Commissioner Shane McMahon but didn’t get the mercy he had hoped for. Shane usually has an over-the-top match at Wrestlemania. Is this the feud set-up for this spring’s big match?
While I find Jimmy and Jey Uso incredibly fun to watch, I find myself getting them confused in the ring. Ironically, the announcers said the same thing! The two-out-of-three falls match concluded quickly; I blinked and the Usos made their second pin against Chad Gable and Shelton Benjamin.
Royal Rumble matches always bring out some interesting competitors, and it’s a perfect stage to introduce new talent or reinstate returning superstars. The past few Rumbles have also seen Kofi Kingston find creative ways of avoiding elimination, and he didn’t disappoint this year, using a plate of pancakes to save himself. Bitter rivalries put The Miz face to face with Roman Reigns and John Cena against Elias, which only adds to the excitement and drama. It was interesting to see the communication and teamwork of John Cena and Roman Reigns, who haven’t been in a ring together since last fall’s No Mercy pay per view. Seth Rollins came into the ring on fire, which was appropriate considering his new ring gear. The well-kept surprise entrant was the return of Rey Mysterio, adding to the Lucha presence in the WWE. The last two men standing were 2015 Royal Rumble winner Reigns and Shinsuke Nakamura, with Nakamura left to take the win.
The endurance of Seth Rollins is nothing to shake a finger at. After battling in the Rumble, he defended his Raw Tag Team Championship with Jason Jordan against The Bar, Sheamus, and Cesaro. While three of these men had just competed, Jordan suffered a head injury and never stepped foot in the ring, leaving the Rollins to carry the match by himself. He was unfortunately defeated, and The Bar are the new champions.
The Universal Championship three-way match between The Beast, Brock Lesnar, versus The Monster Among Men, Braun Strowman, versus The Machine, Kane was nothing but pure destruction. And, that’s pretty much all the match was: three men making a giant mess. Lesnar’s still champion, and no one is surprised.
The highlight of the night was the main event, the first ever Women’s Royal Rumble match. Again, Rumble matches bring out new and returning talent. With a women’s roster that couldn’t fill out a 30-woman entrant list, there was a lot of speculation about who would be included. With the match being a culmination of the Women’s Revolution, it was amazing to see that some of the women who have paved that path return to the ring. There was everything from Lita flying off of the top rung to pure Stratusfaction of Hall of Famer Trish Stratus to Vickie Guerrero screaming “Excuse Me” until she was tossed by the masses. The strategies were a bit confusing, as some women stopped others from tossing competitors and some simply wanted their competitors to tap out. Yet, Asuka remains undefeated and was the last woman in the ring.
Then, the biggest, most poorly hidden secret of the night, “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey made her WWE presence known by confronting Rumble winner Asuka, Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss, and SmackDown Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair. With a shake of WWE Chief Brand Officer Stephanie McMahon’s hand, Rowsey has cemented herself in the WWE Universe.
The Road to Wrestlemania begins now. What feuds do you see forming? What matches are you looking most forward to at the Super Bowl of the WWE? I can’t wait to see Nakamura and Styles; I have a feeling that even if that match is not the main event, it will definitely steal the show.
