SPOILER! DARK NIGHTS: METAL #5 Is A Crescendo That Brings Back A Fan-Favorite Character

Monkeys Fighting Robots

DC Comics’ Dark Nights Metal #5 by Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, Jonathan Glapion and FCO Plascencia, is the penultimate chapter in this epic saga and it brings the story to a tense, heavy, and dramatic storytelling crescendo that leaves you breathlessly waiting for the last issue.

This review contains SPOILERS!

Writing

From the very beginning, Dark Nights: Metal been virtually non-stop in its narrative drive. Now that we are one issue away from the end, you would think things would begin to slow down. Nope. Not Scott Snyder and not this book. Dark Nights: Metal # 5 slams on the gas as it nears the finishing line. There are some many awesome moments in this chapter: Superman and Batman vs. Evil Hawkman, the continued nightmare inducing Batman Who Laughs, Mr. Terrific’s explanation of Plastic Man’s powers, the banter/chemistry between Aquaman and Deathstroke, Black Manta!, the badassery of Green Lantern, Wonder Woman’s beatdown of Black Adam, and of course the *****SPOILER ALERT*****  return appearance of J’onn J’onzz, the fucking Martian Manhunter himself, who hasn’t been seen like this since Rebirth began. Dark Nights Metal

Snyder gives all these equal weight and importance. Any could be big enough to be the ‘Holy Shit’ moment. The end result is an issue filled with multiple epic moments in an already epic mini-series. The worse thing that I can say about this issue is that I read it quickly, but that was less an issue of pacing and more just wanting to purely devour everything that was going on. And then Snyder wails on the whammy board and ends the whole thing on one fantastic and yes, epic cliffhanger image.

Art

Capullo, Glapion, and Plascencia create images, panels, and layouts that match the pace of the story note for note. These are bold, popping and beautiful comic book pages that can blow your hair back. But there are subtle details I picked up on a second reading that add a ton of weight to the art. Things like the heavy and deep black behind the panels that subconsciously connect to the ‘dark multiverse’ theme that Metal has been all about or way certain images and objects break panel borders to work as periods of importance. It’s like when you hear a small, delicate detail in a raging hardcore metal song. You pause and rewind. Taking it all in.Dark Nights Metal

Conclusion

As Dark Nights: Metal heads to its end, this issue works almost like a crescendo. It escalates the narrative exponentially one final time before delivering, what all indication, solicitations, and creator comments have hinted and proven will be one hell of a fucking ending.

*Note: The soundtrack for this review was a completely Black Metal playlist.

Emily Blunt To Star Alongside The Rock In Disney’s JUNGLE CRUISE

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Superstar Emily Blunt, who will star in the upcoming Mary Poppins reboot, has joined Disney’s Jungle Cruise, according to Variety. She will star alongside Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson who has been attached to the project for some time. The film, which is based on the iconic Disney theme park ride, will be an adventure that takes audiences on a tour of rivers all across the globe.

Disney is reportedly head over heels in love with the footage they have seen of Blunt in the upcoming Mary Poppins. That led the higher-ups to make the decision to sign the talented actress to another high profile franchise. The actress will next appear in A Quiet Place, alongside her husband John Krasinski, who is also directing the film.

Jungle Cruise will be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who most recently directed The Commuter starring Liam Neeson. The most recent script was written by Logan scribe Michael Green with an earlier draft coming from J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay. The film is set to begin production in May but has not yet been assigned a release date.

Poster For The Next Purge Will Make America Pay Attention To The Franchise … Bigly

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Blumhouse released the poster for the next film in The Purge franchise, and it will undoubtedly get a lot of attention from both sides of the political aisle. The poster appeared just hours ago across the interwebs. To make the nation-wide trolling even more epic, The First Purge will enter theaters on July 4th, 2018.

Without further delay, this is the poster for the fourth film in The Purge franchise:

purge-poster-horror

The story of The First Purge goes like this:

To push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community. But when the violence of oppressors meets the rage of the marginalized, the contagion will explode from the trial-city borders and spread across the nation.

The Purge series is steeped in politics. Afterall, it’s an authoritarian government that allows for the one-night-a-year killing spree. And The Purge 3: Election Year, released in 2016, featured “Keep America Great” as the tagline. So, Mr. Blum and the gang aren’t shy about mixing in some political commentary here and there which helps keep things a bit fresh beyond repeating a maniacal night of murder and mayhem.

As the resident “hater” at Monkeys Fighting Robots, I welcome the provocative poster. Movie posters used to be talked about on a regular basis because they were often brilliant pieces of print advertising and commercial art. Today, posters serve a matter-of-fact purpose as the Internet, and an endless stream of slick trailers renders them obsolete. Few posters get much interest when it’s not tied to a major blockbuster franchise.

But, this poster is certainly an attention getter. It’s also a seriously creepy advertisement for a horror film in 2018. The First Purge poster blurs the line between horrific fiction and our somewhat heinous reality. For some groups of people, the potential of being “purged” is part of daily life.

Will you be watching The First Purge? Leave your comments on the poster and the horror film franchise in the comments below.

NETFLIX Wants LUC BESSON For Exclusives

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Netflix is currently in the discussion period for obtaining Luc Besson’s skills as a director. The online streaming service is rumored to be retaining the acclaimed director behind films like Fifth Element, Lucy and and Valerian: And The City Of A Thousand Planets for an undetermined amount of films which will be premiere through Netflix in the next few years.

On top of the securing the services of Besson, Netflix would also secure assistance from his production company, Europacorp. As the company is based in France this business transaction may allow Netflix to obtain more of a foothold in the European Market and help to expand their business. It also could result in Netflix obtaining the different library of titles Europacorp has created over the years. Perhaps even a TV series set in the universe of The Fifth Element.

If this deal does play out it will be interesting to see what comes from Luc Besson working for Netflix. Given the usual amount allotted to films produced by the company, there will either have to be an increase in how much is spent or a decrease in Besson’s visual production budget. Hopefully, it won’t be the second one and Mr. Besson will be able to bring his full talent to Netflix without worrying about breaking the bank.

TRANSFORMERS VS. VISIONARIES #2 Keeps Trying To Make It Work

Monkeys Fighting Robots

With the results of First Strike, the Visionaries have been introduced to IDW’s Hasbro Universe and their first order of business: is to destroy the Transformers.

Summary

After the shocking events of the first issue, the Spectral Knights have to stop the Darkling Lords from eradicating all the Transformers from Cybertron.

Writing

It’s really hard to top the end of the first issue, and unfortunately Transformers vs. Visionaries #2 issue doesn’t even come close. Focusing less on the Transformers, the Visionaries are allowed to take center stage as a civil war breaks out between the Spectral Knights and the Darkling Lords. This allows for a perfect opportunity to showcase the different abilities of both sides. Try as hard as it can, the overall plot doesn’t allow the series to shine.

The script by Magdalene Visaggio is serviceable but the overall concept is hard to get behind. The introduction of the Visionaries’ magic causing instant death to the Cybertronians seems more convenient than natural. The Visionaries themselves were just re-introduced and prove to be an extinction level threat to a property which has much more established history, resources, and general familiarity. This idea would have been more acceptable if it had been introduced earlier in the IDW universe. Maybe back during the Revolutionaries when the whole concept surrounded finding the Talisman which turned out to have the Visionaries locked inside?

Transformers Vs Visionaries

Artwork

The issue is blessed with some outstanding artwork to help make up for the shakey overall premise. The art by Fico Ossio offers a great balance to both the human and Transformer characters. There also is a constancy with the scale so the sizes between the two offer correct proportions.

The colors by David Garcia Cruz helps to accentuate the magical and scientific effects spread through the issue. The rusting effect of the magic on Cybertronians seems more death like thanks to the use of gray which is employed. Sometimes simple tricks can have a big result with the project.

The lettering work by Shawn Lee helps to sell the dialogue. The tension between the characters is made apparent thanks to the attention paid to the lettering.

Conclusion

The issue is entertaining but just feels odd. With the tragic death of the previous issue and the reinforcement of what is all at stake in this one, it’s apparent the reader is supposed to be treating the series like major event. Unfortunately this feels rushed and uncomfortable when readers are just getting to know (or in the case of the hardcore fans, get reacquainted) with the Visionaries and must now must accept they are one of biggest threats to the Transformers culture. In the end it just doesn’t feel right.

Chadwick Boseman Reviews BLACK PANTHER

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The star of Marvel Studio’s Black Panther, Chadwick Boseman hit the red carpet at the film’s world premiere Monday night and gave his best non-spoiler review of the 18th installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“I’ve seen the movie. I can assure you that it’s going to be an amazing experience it is unlike any other Marvel film that people have done so I’m excited about that. The characters, we’ve seen stuff blow up and great fight scenes before, but I think the characters are compelling and the backstories are compelling. I think people are going to be blown away by the technology but I don’t want to give anything away, they still got to wait till February 16,” said Boseman.

“I think because it’s different because people have not seen this before. So people are excited about what they have not seen. Obviously, there’s a huge confrontation between my character and Michael’s character. I think people are excited about that as well,” said Boseman.

The director of Ant-Man And The Wasp, Peyton Reed enjoyed Black Panther last night as well.
