One Limb Left: Microsoft Gives Gamer’s With Disabilities Their Own Controller

Monkeys Fighting Robots

There are 1 billion people (15% of the world’s population) who live with some form of a disability.  Steven Spohn is the COO of The AbleGamers Charity.  A charity that strives to improve the lives of all gamers with disabilities.  Spohn is also one of the one billion people in the world who live with a disability, as he suffers from muscular dystrophy.

A genetic disease that occurs when one of the genes involved with the making of proteins that protect muscle fibers becomes defective.  Causing the affected person’s muscles to weaken over time, leading to them needing the assistance of a wheelchair.  If video games are a way to escape, the controller is the gateway.   “I think the controller itself is important because when you’re disabled, sometimes you’re in a hospital, or a VA, and really video games are your escape, and controllers allow you to get to them,” said Spohn in a video published in 2010.

While I was born without the lower half of my right arm, I can still play video games with a regular controller.  Some, like Johns Hopkins Graduate Gyorgy Levay have to create their own controllers.  Levay lost both of his hands to a meningitis infection, and afterwards he created The GEAR.  A foot-based controller that uses sensors to simulate multiple button combinations.

For years, gamer’s like Gyorgy, Steven, and many others have had to find makeshift ways to enjoy the activity they loved.  With the only other option being giving up playing video games because of their inability to properly use a regular controller.  But that was all changed last week.  After three years of development, Microsoft has launched the Xbox Adaptive Controller for gamer’s with limited mobility.

video games
The GEAR controller made by Georgy Levay

The back of the controller is lined with inputs where users can attach assistive switches via 3.5mm jacks, to mimic buttons.  To distinguish what ports are for which buttons, the back has grooves to allow users to properly find and connect the switches to the desired button.  Buttons can also be reconfigured with the Xbox Accessories app.  The controller also has two USB ports to support joysticks.

But to me the biggest thing is the controller can be attached to a wide variety of mounts.  The controller is specifically designed not only for gamers with disabilities, but its ensures each setup is fully customizable and fits to their specific needs.  I may be biased but this is the biggest thing to ever happen to video games and the video game industry.  As a one-armed man who grew up playing video games and whose job it is to cover them, I never thought this day would come.

disabilities
Jonah (Left) and Mike L. (Right) test out the Xbox Adaptive Controller

I never even thought of the day itself because I never saw any major gaming company make any effort to make games accessible for people within my demographic.  To be honest until now it never felt like disabled people really mattered to gaming companies.  Until now I’ve never walked into a video game store or an electronics store in general and saw a section of controllers designed for people with disabilities.

My only hope now is Microsoft allows companies like Sony and Nintendo to create their own Adaptive Controllers.  My hope is companies like Sony and Nintendo want to create their own Adaptive Controllers.  The truth is people with disabilities want to own God of War and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild tooMicrosoft you have given people with disabilities a more proper and easier to play video games, now give us the choice to choose the games we want to play.

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEKIAHrugZ4[/embedyt]

The only negative thing I will say about Microsoft’s adaptive controller is its $100 price tag.  I know Microsoft is giving a lot, but people who live with disabilities already deal with high expenses.  Regular Xbox One controllers sell in store for $29.99.  Why not lower the price to that or if that’s too low then how about $50?

Whether they lower the price or not I just want to say this.  Thank you so much Microsoft.  Thank you, Phil Spencer and everyone involved in making this controller.  I never thought seeing a controller being used would make me cry, but it did.

disabilities

You have given so many people an escape they either couldn’t partake in, or was stripped from them.  There may be more important articles I write than this one, but there will never be one that made me pause more due to me having to emotionally collect myself than this one.  As the tears drip down my face like rain on the windshield of a Warthog, I again want to say thank you, thank you, thank you.

Wizard World Philadelphia Celebrates Women Of Pop Culture

Monkeys Fighting Robots

This past weekend at the Philadelphia Convention Center, Wizard World held their annual comic-con celebration. Among a fabulous collection of pop culture icons for our beloved nerd community to celebrate were Charisma Carpenter and Holly Marie Combs. Between Charmed, Buffy, and Angel, these two ladies had plenty of insight to share about the importance and influence of women in pop culture.

Carpenter and Combs spoke about their experiences in Hollywood during the turn of the century. Having been in prominent roles on shows that gave the spotlight to strong female characters, the audience was filled with women of all ages hungry for their wisdom. A majority of their time on stage was a wonderful Q&A with their fans.

When asked about young women entering the world of film now, Holly Marie Combs said “If you want to write, write nonstop. If you want to direct, make a ton of short films. If you want to act, don’t be an extra.”

The two didn’t give the typical, fluffy answers for those looking for inspiration in their pursuit of stardom. They were honest with their answers and the audience appreciated hearing real answers. Carpenter told us that she was inspired by the women in her life that were strong, rather than those on television. Combs shared that sentiment but also added “and Charlie’s Angels of course.”

One fan asked what had happened to the world they were at the forefront of where powerful women were leading the way on television. “I don’t think it ended, I think we’re in another important period of change and evolution right now,” said Carpenter. “There was a bit of a step backward for a bit in the late-2000’s, but that’s in the rear view mirror.”

Things got heated for a moment when Combs was asked about the Charmed reboot in the works. They weren’t allowed to share anything specific that they knew, but they were both very clear about their displeasure with the new series. “Recasting and starting over with a new cast, it isn’t a continuation, it’s discrediting what came before,” Carpenter said sternly into her microphone. “You understand why we wouldn’t be happy about that, right?”

Carpenter and Combs were delightful together, clearly maintaining a friendship after all these years. It was a great idea for a panel, these two Charmed superstars didn’t waste an opportunity to address the future leading ladies in the audience.

1001 Ways To Die On Film With SEAN BEAN At Wizard World Philly

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Sean Bean is a god among the nerd community. His filmography features major pillars of nerdom such as Lord Of The RingsGame Of Thrones, and Goldeneye. Other than his impressive acting chops, nerd-friendly collection of iconic roles, and popular memes, he is known for another thing. He dies in every movie, ever.

What was an ongoing joke among film buffs for years eventually made it’s way to the man himself. Our beloved Sean Bean sat down for a panel with an auditorium full of adoring fans at Wizard World Philadelphia. One thing was very clear from the beginning, Mr. Bean is very aware of his status as both the subject of some of the most popular memes on the interest and his reputation for great characters that always die.

Not only is he aware of his high on-screen death count, but he claims to have his eye on perhaps passing Christopher Lee’s number. After a lovely introduction and some time with Bean sharing his Philadelphia experience, the floor opened for questions by the audience.

When asked which of his character’s demises he would want to live through, if he had to choose one, he gave a heartfelt answer. “I would choose Boromir’s death. It was a very human and significant final moment where a troubled man was finally at peace with himself after some questionable choices.”

One fan inquired about which character he would have liked to stick around for a little longer. “Probably all of them,” he spits out before the room erupts with laughter.

“I would’ve maybe liked to stick around either Lord Of The Rings or Game Of Thrones a bit longer given how long they both have lasted and how important they are to everyone.”

Well-constructed questions give way to well-thought answers off-the-cuff as Bean charms us all through stories of he and his character’s ways of thinking and approaching obstacles. He mentions being blown away by Ian McKellen in Macbeth, how he’s a major hero of his, and how surreal working alongside him was.

The scenes he was most proud of from GOT were those with Ned Stark’s children. “Ned was trapped between his obligations to his family and being king. He eventually made the wrong decision, that dichotomy was very powerful to me.”

The best possible answer came when asked what his most memorable scene from LOTR was. He simply responded with “honestly, my death.”

WESTWORLD Review: “Akane No Mai” Finally Takes Us Inside Shogun World

Monkeys Fighting Robots

“Akane No Mai” is the episode a lot of Westworld fans have been waiting for since the end of the season one: the oft-teased, highly anticipated trip to Shogun World.  Full of beautifully shot action, drama, and a genre-bent Wu Tang Clan track, “Akane No Mai” delivers on the hype.  If you need to catch up on last week’s episode, you can do so here.  Then continue on, but be warned that SPOILERS follow.

“Welcome to Shogun World”

Maeve and her gang are captured by the ronin Musashi (Hiroyuki Sanada – The Wolverine, Lost) and brought to a town that, as Armistice puts it, seems familiar.  The reason it seems so familiar?  Writing stories is hard, so Head of Narrative Lee has “recycled” some plots.  As a result we’re treated to a samurai-shifted replay of Hector’s season one robbery at the Mariposa, with Musashi in Hector’s role, madame Akane (Rinko Kikuchi) standing in for Maeve, and a dragon-tattooed Hanaryo (Tao Okamoto) doubling for the snake-tattooed Armistice.  While this deja vu is beautiful for us as the audience, being in the presence of their doppelgangers has some side effects for the hosts: even after the two sides join forces, Hector is so riled by Musashi he offers to skin him, and Armistice and Hanaryo get lost in the reflection of each other’s faces.  (When Dolores and crew return to the Mariposa, Clementine is likewise disturbed by seeing her replacement speak the lines she has said so many times before).

Armistice and Hanaryo Westworld

“I think I’m finding a new voice.”

When Akane spurns an offer to sell Sakura (whom she rescued as a child and raised as her daughter), she earns the wrath of the Shogun, but also the admiration of Maeve, who sees for the first time the kinship in her mirror image.  The Shogun sends ninjas to attack and Maeve is able to command a few of them to turn on each other before she is choked, cutting off her powers over the awakened hosts.  During the struggle, she finds a deeper power within herself to override her attacker’s mind without speaking.  Mentally commanding him to impale himself, she manages to free herself and stop the attack, but finds out that Sakura was abducted during the scuffle.  Instead of following her programming (to care only about herself), Maeve decides she must help Akane rescue her adoptive daughter, no matter the risk.

Akane and Sakura prepare to dance for the Shogun, with his word that he will give Sakura back to Akane in exchange.  However, he does not honor the agreement and he kills Sakura.  Akane channels her grief into a graceful dance (set to an Edo-period version of Wu Tang Clan’s “C.R.E.A.M.”), before sawing the Shogun’s head off with a hidden blade.  In the chaos that ensues, Maeve is able to control some of the nearby hosts, but one is able to signal for the rest of the Shogun’s army to attack.  The episode closes on Maeve, armed with a samurai sword and her new voice, ready to take them on.

Thandie Newton as Maeve with sword in Westworld

“The weak and the infected”

Teddy asks Dolores to forget her quest to escape Westworld and to settle down with him somewhere in the park.  The pity on her face as Dolores realizes finally that Teddy is too too soft to survive her crusade is palpable.  In regards to his proposal, she asks him if he would want her to say ‘yes’, even if it was a lie.  He responds that he’s not some guest looking for a lie, he goes with her with his eyes open.  They make love and the scene is shot so tenderly it stands in stark contrast to the series’s many previous sex scenes, which are usually little more than business transactions between guests and hosts.  That tenderness is short-lived, though, and a determined Dolores has Phil manually change Teddy’s characteristics, despite his warnings that such extreme changes without a full reset could be hazardous.

Watch The First Trailer For Andy Serkis’ ‘MOWGLI’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Warner Bros. Pictures has released the first official trailer for Andy Serkis’ highly-anticipated re-telling of The Jungle Book, which has been officially titled Mowgli.

The trailer gives us our first decent look at the film, which appears to be much closer in tone to Rudyard Kipling’s classic book. This first trailer teases a darker and much more serious version of the story, which is filled with beautiful, wild and scary creatures.

Since the latest re-telling of Kipling’s story comes from performance-capture wizard Andy Serkis, we were expecting the various animals to rival those that Jon Favreau created for Disney’s The Jungle Book, and this trailer didn’t disappoint. While the effects haven’t been completed, it’s easy to see that Serkis is attempting to create something groundbreaking and mind-blowing with Mowgli and it will be exciting to see what these characters look like in the finished product.

Watch the trailer below:

The actors performing the roles of the story’s central animal characters are: Oscar winner Christian Bale (“The Fighter,” the “Dark Knight” Trilogy) as the cunning panther, Bagheera; Oscar winner Cate Blanchett (“Blue Jasmine,” “The Aviator”) as the sinister snake, Kaa; Oscar nominee Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Imitation Game,” “Avengers: Infinity War”) as the fearsome tiger, Shere Khan; Oscar nominee Naomie Harris (“Moonlight,” “Skyfall”) as Nisha, the female wolf, who adopts the baby Mowgli as one of her cubs; and Andy Serkis (the “Planet of the Apes” trilogy, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”) as the wise bear, Baloo. Review: BLACK HAMMER AGE OF DOOM #2 Continues To Worldbuild

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Black Hammer: Age of Doom #2 continues to build out this superhero universe that Jeff Lemire, Dean Ormston, Dave Stewart, and Todd Klein have created.

Lucy Weber is working on finding out where she’s been transported, and how she can get back to the others. Meanwhile, back on the farm, Gail and Barbie head to the library, determined to take their destiny into their own hands.

The first Black Hammer series focused mostly on setting up the characters and creating mystery. Age of Doom, however, is putting a much heavier emphasis on worldbuilding. As Lucy traverses various planes of existence, we learn more about this universe and how it functions. We still have no idea what’s happening, so the mystery persists, but pieces are slowly starting to fall into place. There’s at least some sort of context now.

Black Hammer Age of Doom 2

Part of the fun of this series is how it deconstructs the superhero genre. Lemire has been picking apart tropes and cliches since issue one. He’s doing the same thing by building out the universe, both within Age of Doom and his few spin-off titles, but Lemire’s talent is keeping it interesting. He’s not just doing blatant meta-commentary. The story is intriguing and fun as well as deep. It can be enjoyed on a number of levels.

And no worries – while this issue focuses on building out the universe, it doesn’t sacrifice everything we’ve come to love from Black Hammer. We still get some tender, personal moments between the heroes, and it’s still a mystery at its core.

Last issue, readers got a taste of the strange, new places this story was going to take them, and this issue delivers a full meal. From the dark and horrific to the surreal, the art team delivers a visual smorgasbord. Ormston and Stewart are the perfect match for this tale, and Age of Doom is allowing them to show their range as they shift from normal settings, to the dreadful, to the downright strange. But all the while they manage to maintain a consistently unsettling tone. Which is essential because it keeps the comic feeling fluid instead of jarring as they jump from place to place.

Black Hammer Age of Doom 2 Lemire Variant

Todd Klein’s lettering has played a huge role in establishing the tone of Black Hammer from the start. This issue, he does some subtle work paying homage to a classic comic series. It further helps set the tone of a newly introduced dimension, and it lends something of an idea as to where the next issue’s going to. Plus, it plays right into the whole “deconstruct the genre” aspect by tying this series to one that helped establish the medium. (One that he himself worked on no less, to really drive home the meta-fun.)

The 2018 Eisner nominations came out recently, and Black Hammer received its necessary nomination for Best Continuing Series. Pick up Age of Doom #2 this week, as well as all of the preceding issues, and see what all the fuss is about!

DC on CW Weekly Review: ARROW’s Season Finale All-Out Strike

Monkeys Fighting Robots

This series will be a brief, semi-comedic review of the CW superhero shows. You can check out last week’s review post here. The only shows discussed will be ‘Arrow’, ‘Flash’, and ‘Supergirl’. There WILL be some spoilers discussed, so only look at the reviews you’re up to date on!

Supergirl, “Shelter from the Storm” (May 14th)

Supergirl
This mansion may not be the most secure, but it’s a fun Luthor Easter egg! (copyright CW)

There’s a lot happening in this episode, as SUPERGIRL nears the end of season three. Bringing Samantha’s mom back isn’t much more than a reminder of how confusing the Space Witch rules are. Why do self-professed “World Killers” have such strict codes of who to kill? The renewed love triangle problems with Mon-El are not enough of a draw either. While the continuation of the Supergirl-Lena struggle isn’t super enthralling, the final beat in the elevator is worth it. The overall episode is kind of weak, but there are some solid moments along the way.

SCORE: 6.5/10 Dirt Collections

The Flash, “Think Fast” (May 15th)

The Flash
It seems The Thinker brain-swallowed a orchestra conductor at some point too (copyright CW)

Splitting up Team Flash results in several compelling storylines. The exact logistics of Flash Time are still a bit confusing, but the specific Barry vs Cisco conflict works well. The continued focus on Killer Frost’s origins has been a consistently solid story line for Caitlin. This episode features a fantastic David Ramsey cameo (though it’s crazy FLASH keeps using the stretchy-shape-shifting for basically blackface). Overall, all the progressing plot lines make for an exciting build-up for what will be a compelling finale.

SCORE: 7/10 Pizzas

Arrow, “Life Sentence” (May 17th)

Arrow
The Lance Family should all transfer to LEGENDS OF TOMORROW to stay safe (copyright CW)

The season finale of ARROW ends on a rather anti-climactic note. So much of the episode feels like a watered-down version of what has come before. The action shots, including the big building explosion, is stuff we saw last week. Diaz sticking around seems like a mistake, like when The Governor stuck around halfway through THE WALKING DEAD’s fourth season. Oliver has really jumped around as far as whether he wants to be the Arrow, or a family man. The ending of him going off to prison is just like the middle of FLASH’s fourth season. Even the death of Quentin is spoiled from years of Laurel or Sara either dying or returning. ARROW’s sixth season finale doesn’t do much but remind us of things we’ve seen many times before.

SCORE: 6.5/10 PACEMAKERS

WEEKLY WIN TALLY:

The Flash: 9 Weeks

Supergirl: 6.5 Weeks

Arrow: 6 Weeks

Exclusive Preview: Jamie Jones’ THE WHISPER – The Legacy Trope

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Tampa Bay artist and creator, Jamie Jones has put quite an impressive idea down on comic book paper and Monkeys Fighting Robots has an exclusive look at the first five pages of The Whisper.

The Whisper is an ongoing anthology comic that will be released in chapters; each one a self-contained five-page short story. Each short is written by a different writer with art by Jones. What makes this book unique will be the fact Jones uses a different art style for each chapter.

The Whisper was one of those crazy/stupid ideas that wasn’t supposed to go anywhere. The kind of project you and your friends talk about making, but never actually plan to make it. But here we are seven stories in and no end in sight,” said Jones.

“”It’s an experiment on legacy in comics. The evolution of a character passed from creator to creator over decades. The total reworking of an outdated character. The replacement of a fallen hero. Comics is really the only medium that has the legacy trope, and it is, hands down, my favorite thing about superheroes. I wanted to play in that space in a short amount of time. Several creators adding and changing the character as they seem fit. The Whisper doesn’t exist or work with without the idea of hundreds of artist lending their talents to make him “real.”
It’s all respect. It’s respect for artists, its respect for the medium. The Whisper is my love letter to superheroes. I’m excited to see where it goes. The writers I have lined up for the second wave are great. And the stories are only getting crazier,” said Jones.

In June, the first six chapters of The Whisper will be available at HeroesCon in an oversized comic book. If you want to read the book digitally, Jones has created a Patreon page to support the project as well.

Chapter 1 is written by Jones, chapter 2 by Vita Ayala, chapter 3 by Matthew Jones, chapter 4 by Ryan Williams, chapter 5 by Frank Barbiere, and chapter 6 by Tres Dean.

Check out the preview below:
