PREACHER Feature: “The Coffin”

Monkeys Fighting Robots

“The Coffin” has everything: the return of the Messiah, tips on fighting in bathrooms, aspiring vampires, and a certain guardian angel/imaginary friend.

Preacher Feature is a weekly look into the AMC show Preacher based on the comic book of the same name by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. In this column, Josh Versalle gives a breakdown of the events from the show, including how they relate to the comics, and speculates as to what’s going on and what might be coming up. That means we’re headed into SPOILER territory, pardner, so if you haven’t got the grit for it, turn back now.

Need to catch up on last week’s action?  Look no further.

“You up for a fistfight?”

When Jody and TC find out that Cassidy has escaped the Tombs again, they aren’t too happy about it, and they start a fight with Jesse and Tulip.  Not strictly a fistfight, the combatants in this brawl (which is set to Warren Zevon’s Werewolves of London) utilize everything from a .45 to an improvised toilet paper/hair dryer torch, but the most powerful weapon of all turns out to be the voodoo handkerchief Gran’ma has soaked with Jesse’s blood.  Faced with the power it holds over Jesse, Tulip is forced to stand down and, as punishment, Jesse is sent to the coffin and Tulip is chained up in the attic.

Gran’ma, despite being Humperdoo-only-knows how old, still has the appetites of a much younger woman (I guess feeding on souls keeps your libido young, too).  So, she and TC do a little Civil War role-playing.  When TC can’t remember his lines, Gran’ma flies into a rage and says she’s going to eat Tulip’s soul.

“How ’bout a patrol, Marshall Custer?”

While underwater, Jesse starts hallucinating.  In this hallucination, he’s an old-timey marshal, fighting outlaws with a man who looks and sounds an awful lot like the star of such classic westerns as True Grit and The Searchers (more about this below).  This cowboy inspires Jesse to escape from the coffin in order to rescue Tulip, and Jesse sends a cigarette up though the exhaust tube to blow up the pump and blow the lid off the coffin.

Of course, we all know Tulip isn’t the type to need rescuing, and by the time Jesse gets back to the house, she’s already outsmarted Jody and TC and choked out Gran’ma.  The trouble is, when Gran’ma brought Tulip back from the dead, she bound Tulip’s life to her own, so if Gran’ma dies, Tulip goes with her.  Jesse, Jody, and TC manage to revive them both, but now he’s farther than ever away from escaping Angelville.

“Call for you from Masada”

Pip Torrens as Herr Starr - Preacher

Things aren’t going so well for Herr Starr and the Grail, either.  Other than an impressive tap dance routine, Humperdoo (the inbred descendant of Jesus Christ) doesn’t have a lot of skills.  Starr recognizes this and that’s the whole reason he recruited Jesse to be his Messiah.  But Starr’s boss, the All-Father of the Grail (Jonny Coyne), is a man whose faith is matched only by his appetite.  The All-Father believes, despite all evidence to the contrary, that Humperdoo is exactly the man to lead the world after the Grail initiates the apocalypse.  Luckily for Starr, the resourceful Featherstone has a plan…

“So, how long have you been a vampire?”

Joseph Gilgun as Cassidy Preacher

Dating isn’t easy for anyone, let alone a vampire who had to leave the woman he loves and his only friend, so Cassidy turns to the internet.  It turns out, there’s a dating site for everyone, even vampires.  His date turns sour, though, when the “vampire” (played by Lucy Faust) he meets tries to put in a set of novelty fangs.  Upon seeing him reveal his real fangs, she runs away in terror.  Downcast, Cassidy proceeds to get pissed.  Even his stout constitution is no match for the combined intoxicating powers of whiskey and elephant tranquilizers and he passes out, making it easy for the Grail to abduct him.  Featherstone’s plan isto use him as bait to lure Jesse back to them.  While they are filming the hostage video, Cassidy’s “vampire” date and her gang break in and rescue (or double-abduct) Cassidy.

From Panels to Screen:

This episode is packed with connections to the comics.  Let’s start with the titular coffin.  Foreshadowed in season two, the L’angelle’s preferred method of punishment for little Jesse was locking the poor kid in a coffin and then dropping it underwater for days at a time.  With no food, no light, and very little air, how was Jesse to survive this sadistic punishment?  With the help of his imaginary friend, who took the form of John Wayne.

Preacher #11 comic cover

As seen on the cover of Preacher #11, by Glenn Fabry (above) – Jesse, who as a boy in the comics was raised on movie Westerns, took solace in the company of a sort of guardian angel who appeared to him in the image of the Duke.  This “John Wayne” figure was a prominent character in the comics, but until this episode wasn’t been seen in the show, although John Wayne’s movies have been examined, in the season two episode “Dallas”.  The lighter Jesse uses to escape the coffin, with “Fuck Communism” stamped on the side, is a memento of his father, who was given the lighter by none other than John Wayne on a USO tour while Jesse’s dad was a marine in Vietnam.

The group of vampire wannabes that abduct/rescue Cassidy, Les Enfants Du Sang, are also featured in the “Dixie Fried” story arc of the books (Preacher 27-33, Cassidy: Blood & Whiskey).  Their arrival was also foreshadowed on Denis’s computer in the season two finale, “The End of the Road”.

All-Father D’Aronique, the grossly overweight and “lethally clever” head of the Grail, makes his debut in this episode and Starr mentions a “merciless torturer”, which seems to be a reference to Frankie Toscani, aka Frankie the Eunuch.

Review: ATTACK ON TITAN: Season 3 Episode 38

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The return of Attack On Titan opens its third season with a flow similar to the very first episode of the series. It displays a slow start but kicks things into overdrive by the end. Does this mean it’s an instant hit?

Summary

The Survey Corps find themselves having to protect Eren and Historia from a growing conspiracy.

Review

The first thing to address is the new opening for this season of Attack On Titan. Instead of bringing back Linked Horizon for their fourth run on the opening theme, a different group stepped up. The song, Red Sawn by Yoshiki from X Japan, featuring Hyde from L’Arc-en-Ciel, is much different than the openings by Linked Horizon. While the other openings felt like battle anthems to rally the troops to fight the titans, the new song feels emotional and uplifting as it reflects the cast’s growth. It’s a very big change but the song is beautiful so although the style has been changed, it still fits for the series overall.

The episode for goes flashback to catch the audience up on what happened in the previous season. There is a bit of talk about what is happening to Levi’s squad. The team has two goals. The first is to train Eren with his Titan abilities so they he will be able fix the wall to keep out the wild Titans. The second goal is to protect Historia from those who want her dead. Both of these aspects are touched upon in this episode. It’s quickly revealed the MIlitary Police are the ones have their sights set on Historia and will do whatever it takes to get her back.

This plot to capture both Historia and Eren seems like it will be the center point of most of the season. If the plot keeps this level of intense intrigue the entire time then fans have a lot to look forward to this season.

Attack On Titan is streaming on Crunchyroll and VRV.

SDCC: CW Releases ARROW Season 7 Trailer

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The CW has released the trailer for the upcoming seventh season of the show Arrow.

If you are an Arrow fan, then you know last season ended with one of the biggest shake-ups in the show’s history; the outting of Oliver Queen as the Green Arrow and his subsequent arrest.  Now fresh from San Diego Comic-Con International we finally have look at what we can expect this fall. Check it out below.

Things certainly look bleak for Team Arrow! And although we got some answers in the trailer (Oliver has been in prison for five months, the team has been inactive), we are left with many questions too: Who is that new vigilante? Are we getting a return of past villains (both Bronze Tiger and Blockbuster are in the trailer) and where are the ‘Long Bow Hunters’?

SDCC: Next DOCTOR WHO Season Will Not Feature a Classic Villain

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Daleks, war-hungry aliens that cause fear and terror across the universe and scaring children since 1963. They are The Doctor’s greatest nemesis, providing some of the best stories in the classic and modern eras. However, it looks like the Daleks are not returning for the 11th season of Doctor Who.

The new showrunner Chris Chibnall confirmed this news when speaking to the Radio Times in the UK. Chibnall is quoted telling the Radio Times “We’ve got lots of new villains, lots of new monsters, lots of new characters for you to fall in love with.” Chibnall also states “It’s a great moment to bring everybody on board. It’s a big, inclusive, accessible mainstream series of 10 really, varied, exciting standalone stories. So you won’t see very much from the past.”

When speaking at San Diego Comic-Con Chibnall said “We’ve got two weeks left of shooting, and we haven’t seen them [Daleks] yet.”

This could all be a bluff from Chibnall with the aim to surprises audiences with a big return for blobs in battle armor, but it is unlikely. During the modern era the Daleks have been overused to the point that any sense of menace from them has disappeared – a break of a season or two so that the show could build up a massive return for them and be a huge threat once again. They could have a storyline that does them justice.

Doctor Who is set to return in October this year.

SDCC: The DCEU Is No More. It’s Now Known As WORLDS OF DC

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The DC Extended Universe (DCEU) has been given a new name: Worlds of DC.

Worlds Of DC
DC Comics

Screen Rant is reporting that Warner Bros. has finally given it’s DC Comics-based ‘DCEU’ the official name of ‘Worlds of DC’. The news was revealed during the Warner Bros. Hall H panel at Comic-Con International.

Worlds Of DC is a very telling name, as it points to a more ‘multiverse’ concept with multiple worlds. This makes sense as Warner Bros. seems to be wanting to take the DC Comics’ properties in a new direction after the some-what cold reception of their initial try at a shared cinematic universe.

What do you guys think? Could the name change signify big changes for film and TV? Are you still excited to see a shared cinematic DCU? Or would you prefer stand-alone stories? Comment and discuss below!

SDCC: DC Is Bringing Lobo To The Small Screen In KRYPTON Season Two

Monkeys Fighting Robots

DC Comics is bringing cult favorite character Lobo to the small screen in the upcoming second season of Krypton.

Lobo
DC Comics

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Krypton season two will be adding Lobo to its cast of characters as the new ‘big bad’.

Lobo hails from the planet of Czarnia and he is the last of his kind; having slaughtered his entire planet. He is typically depicted as a foul-mouthed, chain-smoking biker who works as a bounty hunter and is usually more anti-hero than a full-on villain, as he is being used here.  No casting has yet been announced.

What do you guys think? Are you excited to see this cult character in live-action? Perhaps DC is testing the waters on ‘The Main Man’ before the long-rumored Michael Bay movie becomes official?  Comment and discuss below!

‘Krypton’ returns to SyFy and stars Cameron Cuffe as Seg-El, Shaun Sipos as Adam Strange, Georgina Campbell as Lyta-Zod, Elliot Cowan as Daron-Vex, Ann Ogbomo as Jayna-Zod, Rasmus Hardiker as Kem, Wallis Day as Nyssa-Vex, Aaron Pierre as Dev-Em, Ian McElhinney as Val-El and Blake Ritson as Brainiac. SDCC: INVADER ZIM Is Returning After 12 Years

Monkeys Fighting Robots

After a long break, your favorite alien is back!

Invader Zim is returning, but not a new season or a reboot. It’s returning as a movie.

During San Diego Comic-Con International series creator Jhonen Vazquez, along with original voice cast members Richard Horvitz (ZIM), Rikki Simons (GIR), Wally Wingert (Almighty Tallest Red) and Kevin McDonald (Almighty Tallest Purple) got together to tell us more about Invader Zim: Enter The Florpus

Before his appearance at SDCC, Vazquez sat down with Polygon for an interview. He said:

What I’m making isn’t going to be the best episode of Invader Zim. I would be battling people’s childhoods and trying to carve out space for a new favorite thing, and that’s the worst attitude to have when making this stuff.

Chris Viscardi, SVP, Content Development and Production, Animation for Nickelodeon said in a statement:

As a network that prides itself on a 25-year history of creating groundbreaking, hilarious animation for kids, Invader Zim is one of our great loves. It’s been so exciting to see its popularity grow over the last decade through social media, consumer products, and the Zim comic books. What makes this announcement extra thrilling is the adventure that Jhonen has created for Zim, and I can promise you that it is as wonderfully absurd and strangely heartfelt as any fan of the original series could hope for, and kids seeing it for the first time will love it too.

No official release date has been given, but here is a sneak peak of the movie.

SDCC: First ‘Shazam!’ Trailer Released

Monkeys Fighting Robots

During its panel at San Diego Comic-Con International, Warner Bros. debuted the first teaser trailer for David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! movie, which has now been released online.

SDCC: New Beasts, Old Mirrors, and Surprising Faces in New CRIMES OF GRINDEWALD Trailer

The trailer gives us our first look at Shazam! and teases a lighter and more comedic adventure in the DC Extended Universe. As someone who has admired Zachary Levi’s work for a while, I’ll say that he looks perfectly cast as the DC hero and the overall tone of the film is something we should all be excited to see.

Watch the trailer below:

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=go6GEIrcvFY[/embedyt]

David F. Sandberg (“Annabelle: Creation”) directs New Line Cinema’s “Shazam!,” the origin story that stars Zachary Levi (TV’s “Chuck”) as the titular DC Super Hero, along with Asher Angel (TV’s “Andi Mack”) as Billy Batson, and Mark Strong (the “Kingsman” movies) in the role of Super-Villain Dr. Thaddeus Sivana. Peter Safran (upcoming “Aquaman,” “The Conjuring” and “Annabelle” films) serves as the film’s producer.

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).
