#DEADPOOLCORE? ISN’T IT SPELLED DIFFERENTLY?
Shhhhh! Deadpool wants no truck with fancy-cigar-smoking-pinstriped lawyers who wipe their boom-boom down with hundred dollar bills.
With the release of Charlie Kaufman’s new movie Anomalisa in select theaters on December 20, everywhere at an unspecified date in January, it’s a good idea to start off this series with the screenplay that became perhaps Kaufman’s most famous film, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Not only did it get him his first (and only, so far) Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, but also it’s his most commercially successful movie with a $70 million worldwide gross.
For those of you who have not watched the movie, it tells the story of Joel Barish, a down-on-his-luck artist, who realizes his ex-girlfriend Clementine has erased him from his memory. He decides to do the same, but during the process, he becomes conscious and regrets it, so he begins to turn it around. The main reference for this article will be the shooting script published by Newmarket from their The Shooting Script series. We’ll also be talking about some of the earlier drafts available online and how they differ.
The opening is nearly identical. But instead of taking the audience through Joel’s sad morning routine, it opens on the commuter train station, with Joel rushing to catch the train Montauk. His dialogue on the phone with his boss is also longer. Joel’s voice overs also have a few extra lines, especially about him thinking of getting back to Naomi, his ex-girlfriend. In the diner, when he meets Clementine, she gets a little dialogue with the waitress.
Later on, when Joel is trying to figure out why and how Clementine erased him from her memory, their friend Carrie says that Clementine learned about Lacuna (the memory-erasing company) from a woman at the supermarket. Moving forward, the changes in the script are mostly minor, with characters, in general, getting a few extra lines in scenes.
But the biggest changes come at the beginning. You know that scene when Joel and Clementine lie and stargaze in the frozen Charles River? Instead of the beginning, Kaufman makes it happen towards the end, making it chronologically correct. The moment we see Joel driving home right before he gets the procedure done is when Clementine asks him to call her once he gets home. Not only does Naomi Joel’s ex get mentioned in more dialogue, but also a scene in which he calls her. You can get a bigger glimpse of her character as played by Ellen Pompeo in the deleted scenes available on the Blu-Ray and the Collector’s Edition DVD. There are also The script ends with Joel and Clementine saying “Okay” to each other.
That brings us to the biggest changes made on the film: the beginning and the end. In earlier drafts that can be found online, Clementine gets the procedure done on her again as an old woman, and it is implied that both Joel and Clementine have gotten their memory erased repeatedly over the years. This gives the movie something of a direct downer ending, although one could get the idea that they may yet find each other and fall in love again as they have before. Meanwhile the movie’s ending leaves things more uncertain, there’s both the promise that they will stay together or break-up, but what matters is that with the knowledge they have acquired of themselves and each other, they love each other enough to take on this ride again.
Overall, the movie stuck very close to the script, you could even say they are identical save for moving scenes from the beginning to the end, but I can understand why these decisions were made. We get to spend a little more time with Joel and Clementine and that makes us understand why they fall in love with each other. Deleting Naomi from the movie could have been a decision to fasten the pace of the film, but Joel’s mere mention of her brings home the baggage he has from their relationship and although it reads fine in the script, it could have been too distracting in the final film.
This is one of those cases where the script and film are both exceptional, where all the talent involved gave their best to mine out truly the best out of the script and have made a movie that could now be regarded as a modern classic. If you haven’t watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, you really should. If you had it erased from your memory by Lacuna, then it is time to watch it again.

So far in the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice footage we have seen, the unmasking of Batman in a desert bunker by an angry Superman appears to be the oddest part of the film so far. The film’s costume designer Michael Wilkinson explained this scene to the Omelette.

“Zack (Snyder) had a great idea of this sort of nightmare-ish vision, almost a vision of the future, a post-apocalyptic vision. It’s like a dream that Ben has, so we wanted to, it has almost a Mad Max quality to it where it’s like the end of the world, trying to survive and then, of course, Superman and his minions come, so it’s sort of a way of representing the amazing amounts of, the sort of obsessive quality that Bruce Wayne has about the threat of Superman,” said Wilkinson.
“In this film, Superman, of course, he’s normally seen as a figure of hope, a positive thing, but in this film, his motivations, the consequences of his actions are really being questioned by the world. Is he a savior? Or is he a dangerous alien with unknown intentions? And this becomes an obsession for Bruce Wayne. And he really wants to sort it out. So, it’s manifested in this sort of incredible dream that Zack decided to create,” said Wilkinson.
This nightmare scene has a feel similar to Mark Millar’s Superman: Red Son from 2003, where Superman is part of the Soviet Union and Batman is on a suicide mission to destroy him (that is the extremly condensed version). In this alternate reality, Superman’s ship lands on a Ukrainian collective farm rather than in Kansas. What if Superman had been raised in the Soviet Union?
It would be hard to believe that director Zack Snyder didn’t draw inspiration from Superman: Red Son for the nightmare scene in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Halfway through the first season of Into The Badlands and a couple of things are very clear. The Widow has a larger plan than we have seen, Quinn is still dying, and we learn how M.K. ended up in the Badlands.
After being surprised and displaced from her territory by Quinn and his Clippers, The Widow (Emily Beecham) has regrouped with Matilda and the remainder of her forces to an abandoned mansion to plan her next move.
Ambushing a nomad convoy using Tilda as bait, the Widow comes away with a large amount of gold and staying the course on her plan of taking out Quinn and getting support of the other Barons for doing so. Tilda openly challenges the Widow’s recent actions and rather unexpectedly the Widow reveals part of her reason for doing what is doing. She wants to craft a world where women craft their own destiny, and are not made either servants or thrown into doll houses, and is willing to do what she deems necessary to reach that goal.

Lydia (Orla Brady) is still contending, and seemingly trying to help Quinn’s wife-to-be, Jade (Sarah Bolger). Planning the upcoming wedding, Jade looks to buck some traditions because the other Barons will not be attending, so having a “place of honor” for their gifts is not something she deems important. Lydia cautions her that traditions go towards keeping the tenuous peace, and it’s probably not a smart idea to continue sleeping with Ryder (Quinn’s son).
Sunny continues to train M.K. and while the boy shows promise he still has a lot to learn about improvisation when taking on an opponent. Taking him to an abandoned stretch of land and cutting M.K. to bring out his hidden abilities, Sunny tells M.K. he needs to face his inner fear to control whatever this power is. Quinn consults with Sunny about his taking of the Widow’s oil fields and how the other Barons are not entirely pleased. Seeking a parlay with another Baron, Jacobee. Quinn hopes a formal alliance will make the other Barons more agreeable to his recent actions. Still trying to prolong what time he has left, Quinn visits Vail to see if there is anything else that can be done. Veil suggests what is seemingly the Badlands version of chemotherapy, to “poison” him to kill the tumor. Quinn is hesitant but Veil seems to think it will give him more time but is unsure, as her father thought he had a few months at best.
Ryder is sent by Quinn to arrange the parlay with Jacobee and to make peace with Jacobee about the gold shipment that the Widow took, He and his father are at odds about his role and his past relationship with Jade, as it appears they were childhood sweethearts. We learn Quinn has taken a second wife before, but died due to “natural causes” and Ryder warns Jade to not be naive. Ryder meets with Jacobee’s Regent, Zypher (Ellen Hollman) and sets a place and time for the parlay, and close to Quinn’s territory, as his father directed.

At the parlay, we meet Jacobee (played with an underlying menace by Edi Gathegee), accompanied by Zephyr and a detachment of Clippers. Jacobee tells Quinn that since he provoked The Widow, it’s his problem. Take care of the problem and Quinn has the full support of the other Barons. One ax throw by Tilda, and the parlay descends into a short but effective fight scene with Quinn facing off against Jacobee and his Clippers, while Sunny faces Zypher. Seeing M.K. struggling with Tilda, Sunny is able to stop him from killing Tilda, grabbing the ax, and showing both sides that the Widow has manipulated both sides.
Upon returning to the Fort, Sunny and Quinn find the fields empty and the Clippers dead. Locating a survivor, they learn that the Widow killed the Clippers and offered the Cogs gold, more gold than anyone has seen, and the promise of a better life. Quinn mandates Sunny find the Widow, kill her, and return her body to Quinn so she can be displayed on the gates of the Fort for everyone to see. Sunny then makes a visit to the River King, who moves all cargo throughout the Badlands, and learns that a shipment of Cogs was massacred prior to delivery, and there was one survivor. M.K. was that survivor.
The River King (Lance E. Nichols) makes Sunny an offer, find and kill M.K. and bring him his head, and he will offer safe passage to Sunny and anyone he travels with out of the Badlands.
Meanwhile, we see that Ryder has been taken prisoner by Zypher and The Widow. The Widow makes Ryder an offer, presumably the same one made with Zypher. Kill their respective masters, and the Widow will see they are rewarded.
This episode revealed a lot in a short amount of time and in contrast to the previous episode, which was a bit of a slog. A good amount of exposition packed in to a short amount of time mixed with short, but meaningful action. Hurtling towards what looks to be an explosive finale in the next two episodes, Badlands is delivering on story, characters, and the best fighting and action sequences you will see on television right now
As modern composers go, John Williams is beyond compare. Few others have the same depth or quality of work that Mr. Williams has accrued in his six decade careers If you were asked to hum your favourite movie theme, chances are high that it would ending up being one of his. Whether its Star Wars, Superman, Jurassic Park, Jaws or Indianna Jones, it’s hard not to acknowledge the impact that his work has had on the cultural hive-mind. It is, therefore, unsurprising that many would seek to pay tribute to him through their music. One of the standout works in this regard is Empire Jazz, produced andarranged by Ron Carter.
While Star Wars has always inspired musical experimentation whether it be through the comedic works of Weird-Al or the rapping genius of the Wu-Tang Clan, Empire Jazz is a very different beast. Released in 1980, the same year as The Empire Strike Back, this LP consists of five jazz interpretations of the some of the aforementioned film’s standout tracks. With over 40 albums released in his own name and appearing on more than 2,500, Ron Carter is one of the world’s most prolific bassists. There is very little information available about this album, Ron Carter hasn’t spoken about it in any interviews he has done and its often lost within his extensive discography. Its hard to know what it was about the film’s soundtrack that inspired this Jazz Hall of Famer , but it makes for an interesting antiquity and an enjoyable listen for jazz fans.
Beginning with the now infamous “Imperial March”, listeners are treated to a lively rendition that would be well at home in the finest jazz club. It features an incredibly strong flute element which demonstrates the flexibility of the instrument. As a flutist, its something I very much appreciate. It is followed by Carter’s take on the “Asteroid Field” which invokes images of the Copacabana and classic lounge jazz. It is features a baton-pass approach to lead instrument with the sax passing off to the trumpet and the flute as the track progresses. His interpretation of the “Love Theme” reflects the development of Han and Leia’s relationship. It begins quite subdued, but builds in strength and ambition as it reaches its climax. “Lando’s Place” is as smooth as the man himself with an incredibly prevalent and novel use of bass. The album concludes with an experimental take on “Yoda’s Theme”. It very much likes in the realm of lounge jazz, but its focus on piano and trumpet works to its favour. The album, as a whole, is a good motivator and provides ample atmosphere for whatever work or study that you need to do. I could go on, but the only way to thoroughly appreciate these covers is to experience them yourself.
Star Wars is no stranger to musical oddities but surprisingly, Empire Jazz has never been re-released either physically or digitally. The album is incredibly rare with some copies going for around $400 on various online outlets. You’d think that either Ron Carter or Lucasfilm would see the potential that the album has from an economic standpoint. Perhaps, some unknown licencing issues is at play that seeks to condemn this hidden gem to obscurity. So go forth dear readers and search those second-hand vinyl fairs, you’ll never know what treasures you’ll find from a galaxy far, far.

Scott Buck, who’s most famous for Dexter and Six Feet Under has been hired to serve as showrunner for Marvel’s Iron Fist, according to ComicBook.com and Heroic Hollywood.
UPDATE: Marvel has made it official as well.
“Scott came in with a take on Iron Fist that quite simply knocked us off our feet. We always look for the most creative minds in the field to help us bring our heroes to life, and with Scott we’ve found someone that can deliver yet another great series in the ongoing story of The Defenders,” said Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb to Deadline.
“I’ve always been drawn to writing complex, intriguing characters, and that’s what most excites me about the opportunity to bring Danny Rand and “Iron Fist” to life with Marvel on Netflix,” said Buck to Deadline.

“Returning to New York City after being missing for years, Daniel Rand fights against the criminal element corrupting New York City with his incredible kung-fu mastery and ability to summon the awesome power of the fiery Iron Fist.”
Luke Cage and Daredevil season two are in production with both series debuting in 2016. The earliest Iron Fist will air is 2017, with a Defenders series to follow.
A few months back, Marvel sent retailers a postcard that featured Iron Man and Captain America about to throw down, with the roman numerals “II” on the back. Many assumed that Marvel was teasing a sequel to its 2006 event Civil War. Today, Marvel confirmed this news, and revealed the creative team:
In 2006, writer Mark Millar and artist Steve McNiven crafted a storytelling event that spoke to larger real world issues while also altering the Marvel Universe forever with Civil War. A decade later, Brian Michael Bendis and David Marquez pick up the gauntlet for Civil War II.
The official launch date is still unclear, but it’s hard to imagine Marvel won’t try to sync up with the release of Captain America: Civil War in May.
Very little is known about the series, or why superheroes are at war once again. It is clear however that Sam Wilson will still be in the role of Captain America. It may also be worth mentioning here that Sam is currently at odds with both S.H.I.E.L.D and Steve Rogers in his own title, Captain America: Sam Wilson by Nick Spencer.
Pushing out comic books to serve as promotional material has not always worked out for the better. While this seems to be a move by Marvel to cash in on the hype surrounding the Civil War movie, hopefully fans get a well thought out and well put together story.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed this morning that a promo for next summer’s Star Trek Beyond will be attached to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. With studios vying to get their trailers screened with what very well may be the biggest movie opening of all time, writer Pamela McClintock reports:
One studio already prevailing is Paramount, which will unveil a promo for Star Trek Beyond tied to Force Awakens, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.
Franchise rivalries aside, this comes with little surprise. Director J.J. Abrams manned the helm for the first two films in the new Star Trek franchise, and maintains a producer role for Beyond. Abrams declined to direct the third Star Trek in order to take on The Force Awakens.
THR also speculates on other trailers that may air with Star Wars, including Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, The Huntsman’s Winter War, X-Men: Apocalypse, and Independence Day: Resurgence, among other Disney-owned properties.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in the U.S. next week, December 18, 2015. Star Trek Beyond is scheduled to be released on July 22, 2016.
James Bond’s new film SPECTRE finally hit the cinemas on November the 6th. Three years after Skyfall, the highest-grossing James Bond film ever, this new instalment received mixed reviews.
SPECTRE, a return-to-form film for the prolific franchise, has caused both praise and disappointment to an audience that had high aspirations. Lacklustre to some, spectacular to others, Sam Mendes’ second James Bond film continues to divide opinion. We won’t delve into SPECTRE particulars in this article –after all, we have already presented our argument in depth. Instead, we will take you on a fascinating trip down memory lane to look at some of the most iconic, exciting and memorable scenes in 007’s long cinematic career.

It’s one of the most memorable theme songs in cinema history. Shirley Bassey’s biggest hit, written by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse and composed by John Barry, opened the 1964 James Bond film starring Sean Connery. In addition to the captivating vocals and audio track, the sequence itself – a surreal set of shots where film is projected upon a beautiful gold lady – is remarkable. Dame Shirley Bassey famously never agreed to sing any song before hearing the lyrics but she was smart to make an exception in this case as, according to her website, the music gave her goose pimples. Bassey went on to sing two more James Bond songs, Diamonds are Forever and Moonraker.

Among the literally dozens of memorable quotes the suave secret agent has given us, one is known best, and that is the way he introduces himself – only followed by “Martini – shaken, not stirred.”
It was first delivered by Sean Connery in the very first ever James Bond film, 1962’s Dr No. Over a green felt table of baccarat, Sylvia Tench asks 007 for his name, remarking that he has excellent luck, and the man replies “Bond, James Bond” while lighting a cigarette – it became legendary almost overnight. This scene also earned the high-stakes game of baccarat a place in pop-culture history, as it was James Bond’s casino game of choice. While recent Bonds have been shown playing poker and roulette, we see the spy play bacarrat in no less than seven of the series’ movies, spanning more than 30 years.
Interestingly, Dr No wasn’t supposed to be the first movie featuring the iconic agent: The producers’ top pick was Thunderball but it had to be postponed because of an intellectual rights dispute. The year is 1987 and Timothy Dalton, James Bond’s fourth incarnation, is driving his Aston Martin with Kara Milovy in the passenger’s seat. Their attempt to flee from Czechoslovakia to Austria is threatened by the KGB and Czechoslovak police who are pursuing them. After a series of spectacular leaps, the car gives up on them and the duo slide downhill on Kara’s cello case, James Bond holding the instrument in his hands to the sound of an 80s version of the classic theme of the series.
Despite the skiers and vehicles, they manage to reach the Austrian border safely – with a single bullet hole on the cello, in a characteristically action-packed but strangely romantic moment for the series. Kara Milovy, played by Maryam d’Abo, was the last blonde main Bond girl for almost thirty years, until this year’s Spectre.

An action sequence fit for the 21st century, the parkour chase in Casino Royale shows that recent instalments of the series can indeed live up to the JB legend. Daring cinematography, breath-taking combat and a great soundtrack see a casually dressed Daniel Craig prove his worth as 007 in the best possible way. Terrorist Mollaka, the acrobatic villain being chased by Craig is in fact Sebastien Foucan, a renowned real-life parkour artist and founder of freerunning, who joined the movie to showcase his impressive stunts. In an interview, Foucan said he’s proud to have been part of the James Bond legend, and clarified that when they shot the scene where he spits on Daniel Craig’s face, he actually spat on the floor. Martin Campbell’s 2006 film marked the hero’s return after a four-year gap and managed to captivate audiences worldwide.

For 53 years now, Bond girls have been haunting the fantasies of men and women – but it was Ursula Andress who started it all, in 1962’s Dr No. Andress played Honey Ryder, the original Bond girl, in the quintessential scene where she emerges from the sea after diving for shells. James Bond, who believed he and Quarrel were alone on tropical Crab Key island, is very pleasantly surprised and joins in her song of “Under the Mango Tree”. Honey’s spectacular body – clad in a white bikini and knife belt – set the standard for the Bond Girls that followed.
This classic scene was mirrored in 2002’s Die Another Day, with Halle Berry wearing an orange bikini and emerging from the sea to be met by Pierce Brosnan. The latter scene, shot in Cadiz, Andalusia might look sunny and warm but it was quite the opposite. Berry had to be wrapped in thick towels to avoid catching a cold inbetween shots.

James Bond spends the night with stunning Aki and the two fall asleep. An assassin targeting Bond sneaks into the building and attempts to slide a powerful poison down 007’s mouth using a piece of thread. The poison reaches Connery’s mouth but he shifts in his sleep. Instead, it is Aki who swallows it and meets her death. Bond gets his revenge right away, shooting the assassin dead. A true classic, this method was later paid tribute to in Grosse Pointe Blank.
