DVD Review: Suburra ‘A Fascinating and Complex Crime Drama’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Suburra is an Italian crime thriller set in the heart of the political and criminal powerhouses and a treat for anyone who is a fan of crime movies.

Set over the course of seven days in November 2011, the death of an underage prostitute ripples through the criminal world of Rome, affecting a deal to turn the waterfront area of Ostia into the Las Vegas of Italy. This death leads to involvement a prominent Italian Parliamentarian (Pierfrancesco Favino) and a potential war between two crime factions one led by “Number 8” (Alessandro Adami), the other being the Anacleti family.

suburra - violence

Suburra was directed by Stefano Sollima – a man who has already directed two highly regarded crime TV shows in Italy, Romanzo Criminale and Gomorrah and is set to direct the Sicario sequel Soldado. Suburra could also have been a TV series because it was so dense with plot, converging storylines and character that it seemed like an HBO series condensed into two hours. Suburra was based on a novel which explains the various stories and how they came together. It’s only the short time span of a week that allows Suburra be told in a movie. Suburra is going to be followed by a Netflix series next year which would be fitting considering the world that had been built.

Suburra is a complicated movie that would require repeated viewing to truly appreciate all the character relations and the various political and criminal dealings – yet the film is still engaging and if the movie makes some people compelled to watch it again, the filmmakers have certainly done something right. It was amazing how all the characters and storylines are connected, even the storyline involving Seba (Elio Germano) – a man who is forced to pay his father’s debts to the Anacleti family – and has to play a part in the Anacleti attempts to muscle into the Ostia deal. This is fantastic screenwriting and directing because it made everything naturally fit together.

Suburra starts in the Vatican as priests discuss rumors that the Pope is about to resign. This part of the movie felt the most tacked on but it is placed in the beginning to establish Italy is on the verge of religious, financial and political crisis and gives Suburra a similarity to the Brad Pitt crime movie Killing Them Softly – a film that used the 2008 Financial Crisis as a backdrop to a crisis affecting the New Orleans criminal world. However, Killing Them Softly was too willing to hammer the comparisons of the Financial Crisis with its story to the point it became boring and treated the audience likes idiots – Suburra at least knew that it needed to tell a story first and smartly kept the political and religious analogies in the background and let audience members come up with their own conclusions. The death of the prostitute could be seen as an example of sleaze and corruption affecting Italian politics or simply as a horrific incident that ignites the events of the movie.

suburra - nightclub

As well as setting Suburra during a period of crisis the movie has a theme of modernism vs. traditionalism. There is the traditional architecture of the eternal city while the interiors are modern – whether it be offices or nightclubs. This also ties into the storyline of Ostia being redeveloped but by corrupt means. The Anacelti are an old Mafia family but dysfunctional: the kids run rampant, their home is crumbling, and the head of the family is more concerned about respect and honor than the criminal enterprise. The heavily tattooed Number 8 is a modern criminal – someone who has a small crew, only loosely linked to the Mafia and uses brutal violence to get his way, but can see the big picture. The head of Mafia, The Samurai (Claudio Amendola) acts as the mediator between the conflicting factions. He was more a middle-aged businessman than a gangster, yet Amendola gave the character a calm authority, and his everyman look gives him the ability to walk in high-end establishments or wait around a cafe as people come to deal with him.

Suburra is a slick crime drama that was able to combine its complicated plotting and numerous storylines while also being a compelling movie because of the interconnected plot. It covers a lot of ground in a short space of time and stands with other quality euro-thrillers.

Special Features: The DVD comes with a three minute featurette looking at the making of Suburra and the trailer.

Here’s a Ton of New ‘Ready Player One’ Set Photos and Videos

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Steven Spielberg is in the thick of Ready Player One right now, and since everything these days is shown to us as they happen we now have a whole slew of set photos and a few videos to go along with it.

Ready Player One is filming right now in Birmingham, in the U.K., and since the set is fairly open people are snapping pics and filming quick videos. Here’s a few photos:

So the photos are mostly set pics, and that mail truck we saw in the first set photo a couple of weeks back. Here are a handful of videos where we see Spielberg and a few of the actors working on things:

There you have it. There are a few more Ready Player One set photos out there, but they are pretty redundant with these. It will be interesting to see how Spielberg handles Ernest Cline’s pop-culture heavy novel. There are references to all sorts of films, some Spielberg films, and others from his buddies George Lucas and Robert Zemeckis.

Tye Sheridan stars alongside Simon Pegg, Ben Mendelsohn, Mark Rylance, T.J. Miller, and Olivia Cooke. We’ll see the finished product March 30, 2018.

Stan Lee Adds To The Marvel V. DC Rivalry, And Reveals What Would Improve DC Comics Films

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Stan Lee just took a comical shot at DC Comics in the never ending Burger King/McDonald’s like rivalry between the big comic book and entertainment giants, Comicbook reports. Marvel and DC Comics fans have likely noticed the increased rivalry since both publishers started creating their own cinematic universes.

Stan Lee has taken the latest shot in the ongoing feud between Marvel and DC, and Marvel Comics fans will likely find it quite amusing.

“I can’t make out what he said, but it sounded like it came from the heart. I want to do more cameos also, I’ve even let people know it doesn’t have to be a Marvel movie, I don’t know why DC hasn’t called me. They could use me!”

Stan Lee was being asked about future cameos, and whether or not he had considered doing any for other films.  The back and forth has been going on for some time, and most recently, Suicide Squad director David Ayers yelled out “F*** Marvel!” at the premier of the film.

Blankman And J5

The Wrap reported last September on the mixed review Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder took his own shot at Marvel that was a little less friendly than Stan Lee, or even David Ayers.

“It goes to the mythological nature of the movies that we’re making. I feel like he’s right. But I feel like Batman and Superman are transcendent of superhero movies in a way, because they’re Batman and Superman. They’re not just, like, the flavor of the week Ant-Man — not to be mean, but whatever it is. What is the next Blank-Man?”

Stan Lee, Zack Snyder, David Ayers, and others will continue to take shots and mud slinging, but in the end it all benefits the their own sector of the film industry. Rivalries and competition is good business, and trash talk was invented for such things.

No sides taken, but Stan Lee’s comments seem to be the most humorous in intent, and likely the most comedic.

‘Arrow’ Season 5: Stephen Amell And David Ramsey Reveal New Season Dialogue That Relates To This Film

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Arrow Season 5 is just around the corner, and Stephen Amell and David Ramsey sat down at Salt Lake City Comic Con 2016 to discuss their on set antics and drop some Season 5 dialogue as well, Comicbook reports. Arrow, apparently, will now share something in common with the blockbuster hit Se7en starring Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt.

Stephen Amell and David Ramsey were discussing their Arrow Season 5 quotes that made for some humorous moments on set, and Ramsey reminded Amell “Yeah, ‘What’s in the box?’ was going for a looong time.” Amell recounted the on set story behind the quote.

“So yeah, Dave and I would yell, ‘What’s in the box. Even now, J.D., our main camera operator since the pilot, will just go–in the style of the Budweiser’ “Wassup”–he’ll go, ‘Wazzz in the booox!”

However, apparently, this allusion to the well-known Se7en scene actually had some connection to Season 5, according to Amell.

“A dialogue tease. Something you have to say to Oliver in a straight-face and I have to answer in a straight-face,” Amell said. “What did you have to say?”

Oliver-Queen-And-Diggle

David Ramsey was forced to reveal that the line, that had many on set finding quite a bit of humor in it, was now a serious line in an actual Arrow episode. For anyone who has scene film and TV bloopers, it is apparently hard to be serious all the time, so this likely made matters worse because it was already the subject of an on set joke.

“I had to say, ‘Oliver, what’s in the box? But I had to say it in all seriousness, because it’s a very serious moment.”

The only thing Arrow fans have not received from this little tid bit of information is what this line from Season 5 means.

It was unlikely that Amell or Ramsey would have let that information slip, of course. Also, Arrow Season 5’s secrets will be revealed in October, so fans will not have to wait long.

What are your thoughts? What is this box that has been teased?

Leave your opinions below.

Couple at Dragon Con Stirs Anger With Twin Towers Cosplay

Monkeys Fighting Robots

A celebration of all things science fiction and fantasy took place this weekend at Dragon Con in Atlanta. However, the proceedings came to a screeching halt when a couple entered the event dressed as the Twin Towers on fire.

Dragon Con

They were greeted with jeers and boos from the throngs of fans that were milling about in Atlanta’s Peachtree Centre. Apparently, the couple was also seen wearing hats reminiscent of Donald Trump that said: “Make Fishcenter Great Again.”  While it’s understandable that Dragon Con wants its patrons to express themselves in any way they see fit in their cosplay choices, didn’t anyone think that they crossed the line with their outfit? What would you have done if you just saw these two just walking around without a care in the world?

Stephen Amell Discusses Re-Casting Of Green Arrow In DCEU

Monkeys Fighting Robots

It was a controversial choice for the DC Extended Universe to re-cast characters that were already appearing on television. Fans reacted with amaze and anger when they learned that Ezra Miller would play Barry Allen in the DCEU instead of TV star Grant Gustin. This decision has been given a lot of flack from both the public, and stars of shows like Arrow and The Flash.

Green Arrow

“I Do Not Have A Right To Oliver Queen…”

During a panel at Salt Lake City Comic-Con, Arrow star Stephen Amell discussed the DCEU, and his opinion might surprise a lot of fans. Amell in the past criticized Warner Bros. for announcing Ezra Miller’s casting of The Flash. Not because he thinks Gustin should have been given the role, simply because it was bad timing. Speaking here it seems the Arrow star is a lot more comfortable with the DCEU than we have previously heard.

“Again, I just thought the timing of the Flash film casting was less than appropriate. I do not have a right to Oliver Queen. Someone played it before me, someone voiced it before me, somebody will play him after me. I don’t believe there are plans for Oliver Queen in the DCEU, based on things people have told me. But I would not be upset if that changed at all.”

“I Think The Television Universe Has Done Just Fine For Itself.”

Amell then went on to discuss the DC Television Universe, specifically talking about how they keep the two universes separate. The actor also makes sure to tell fans that there is no war between the TV and movie sides of DC Comics.

“That’s not how that works. Diane Nelson, Geoff Johns, the people at WB on the features side, the people at WB on the TV side are all in the business of making the best products for the fans. Diane Nelson sent me a very, very eloquent email explanation as to why they thought the cinematic universe and the television universe should remain separate, and it made perfect sense to me… Look, there is no in-fighting, there is no war between the two factions. It’s all a collaborative effort and in the grand scheme of things, I think that the television universe has done just fine for itself.”

Do you wish the DC Extended Universe and Television Universe existed in the same world? Are you glad to hear that there is no conflict between DCTV and DC movies? Be sure to let us know in the comments section below.

‘Rogue One:’ Meet The New Imperial Droid C2-B5

Monkeys Fighting Robots

A new droid is coming to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, according to the Star Wars Show.

Meet C2-B5, an Imperial Astromech droid which will appear in the upcoming movie.

He was revealed during the latest episode of the weekly series. You can watch it below.

So what do we know abut C2-B5? Not much.

He’s black with chrome, as seen in an official Star Wars tweet.

He also bears a striking resemblance to another droid. R2-D2 anyone?

The Star Wars Show would only offer this small detail about C2-B5:

The Galactic Empire relies on Astromech droids to maintain its machinery. But unlike the Rebel Alliance, Imperial technicians do not grant their droids independence and subject them to frequent memory wipes to keep them subservient.

It’s unclear how big of a part the Imperial droid will play in the upcoming film.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters December 16.
