Javier Bardem Circling Universal’s ‘Frankenstein’ Reboot: Doctor or Monster?

The Universal Monsterverse is getting serious. First up, Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella are close to wrapping The Mummy. Then there’s the Johnny Depp-led Invisible Man (groan). Russell Crowe is in this Monsterverse as Dr. Henry Jekyll, and now it seems Javier Bardem is flirting with the Frankenstein reboot.

According to the news at Variety, “Javier Bardem is in talks to star as Frankenstein in Universal’s cinematic universe with rebooted versions of classic monster movies.” This is about all the news about Bardem’s involvement. We don’t know where he might first appear, or who he will be in the reboot, the Doctor or his creation.

What’s so fascinating about Bardem considering this film is I could see him in either role. He has the suave, bottled-up intensity to portray a mad Victor Frankenstein, and he can definitely ugly things up as Frankenstein’s Monster. Personally, I think he would be better fit as Victor, and if he’s set to appear in a film prior to the Frankenstein standalone that would make the most sense.
