Simon Kinberg could be making a big leap in Hollywood.
The producer is in the running to direct the next X-Men movie, according to Collider.
Reports indicate Kinberg is looking to make his directorial debut on X-Men: Supernova. He’s also writing the film’s screenplay. Bryan Singer is taking a break from the franchise.
Now, I’m of two minds about this idea. First, the thought of a neophyte director is troubling, because this is a film franchise. Josh Trank had a sleeper hit with Chronicle, but we know how Fantastic Four turned out. Keep in mind, though, Tim Miller had a great first movie with Deadpool, and it became a huge hit.
On the plus side, Kinberg is a solid producer, and he has an eye for story. He’s been in Hollywood for over ten years. Aside from X-Men, Kinberg has done producing for Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Sherlock Holmes, and Star Wars: Rebels. He also has a Best Picture nomination for his work on The Martian.
Remember, Kinberg did help make X-Men: Days Of Future Past become a hit. He’s also looking to correct mistakes of the past like X-Men: The Last Stand, which he cowrote. This includes wanting to re-do the Dark Phoenix for the big screen.
