The Top Ten George Clooney Big Screen Movie Roles

Monkeys Fighting Robots

It’s hard to believe that George Clooney is now 56 years old.

In honour of his birthday, we will take a look at his career. While his big break was on ER, Clooney did branch out into films but didn’t become a major star until he was nearly 40. Here’s a look back at his biggest roles.

10. Oh Brother Where Art Thou?

George Clooney O Brother Where Art Thou

This marks Clooney’s first work with the Coen Brothers. Ulysses Everett McGill escapes from a chain gang in an attempt to return home. However, he’s chained alongside two inmates, both of whom have mixed feelings about their predicament. Along the way, they encounter an odd cast of characters, including beautiful women, the Ku Klux Klan, and a one-eyed bible salesman.

9. Gravity

George Clooney Gravity

While Sandra Bullock is the star, Clooney has a major role as astronaut Matt Kowalski. His wry sense of humour makes the film a little less depressing. Clooney’s final moments are heartbreaking, but he keeps Bullock focused on her mission.

8. From Dusk till Dawn

From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) - Quentin Tarantino and George Clooney

From Dusk till Dawn is one of Clooney’s first major movies. He holds his own as the anti-hero Seth Gecko, who’s just pulled off a bank job. Together with his brother Richard, they continue their crime spree on the way to Mexico. Neither of them expect having to face off against a swarm of vampires. Clooney’s banter with Quentin Tarantino is funny to watch.

7. Out Of Sight

George Clooney Out Of Sight

While breaking out of jail, criminal Jack Foley and his friend (Ving Rhames) kidnap U.S Marshal Karen Sisco (Jennifer Lopez) in the process. The plan is to pull off one final score in Detroit, but they can’t afford to let their captive go. As the trip progresses, Sisco grows closer to Foley- or is this part of her plan to arrest him?

6. Good Night And Good Luck

George Clooney Good Night And Good Luck

Clooney’s first directorial success concerns the McCarthy Hearings of the 1950s. As Fred Friendly, he acts as confidant and sounding board for Edward Murrow. The film boasts an all-star cast and excellent production values. Indeed, it feels like an old-school character drama.

5. Ocean’s Eleven

George Clooney Ocean's Eleven

As Danny Ocean, Clooney oozes charm, swagger and down-to-earth likability. Upon getting out of jail, Ocean quickly breaks his parole in plotting to rob three casinos in one night. Things get complicated when he encounters ex-wife Tess, who’s dating their target Terry Benedict. One of the film’s main highlights is his banter with Brad Pitt’s Rusty Ryan. Watching them scheme and debate how to pull a heist is a joy.

4. Syriana

George Clooney Syriana

This is Clooney’s Oscar-winning role. As CIA officer Bob Barnes, he is trying to thwart illegal arms trafficking in the Middle East. During a routine assignment, Barnes gets caught up in an assassination attempt, kidnapped and tortured for information. The scene of Clooney being subject to beatings is difficult to watch.

3. The Ides Of March

George Clooney Ides Of March

Governor Mike Norris is one of Clooney’s most complex roles. Cool and charismatic, he’s preparing a run for the White House. Ryan Gosling learns he is not all he seems to be when a young intern is pregnant with Norris’ baby. The climatic confrontation shows Clooney can be intense when he needs to, which shows the dark side of a politician’s character.

2. Up In The Air

George Clooney Up In The Air

Up In The Air offers a more vulnerable side to Clooney. Ryan Bingham travels the U.S to give motivational speeches and conduct layoffs. He has no permanent abode or meaningful relationships. His only goal is to reach the ten million frequent flyer miles. Ryan’s life takes an unexpected turn when he meets a new hire (Anna Kendrick) and strikes up a relationship with another frequent flyer (Vera Farmiga).

1. The Descendants

George Clooney the descendants

The Descendants is Clooney’s finest turn as an actor. After his wife Elizabeth gets hurt in an accident, Matt King is forced to be a hands-on parent to two daughters. Having left the child rearing to his wife, Matt struggles at being a Mr. Mom while working on a real estate deal. In addition, he must come to terms with his wife’s condition as he learns she had an affair behind his back. His final moments with her are very difficult to watch.

Free Comic Book Day Around The World Recap

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Five brave souls from Monkeys Fighting Robots ventured out for Free Comic Book Day and these are their tales.

Big Bang Comics

Dundrum, Dublin, Ireland

Big Bang Comics

I’d suspect not many readers will have heard about Big Bang Comics, my LCBS in Dundrum, Dublin, but they are by far one of the most facilitating and amiable businesses I’ve ever had the pleasure of dealing with. This is unsurprising considering they became the first Irish store to ever be shortlisted for the Eisner “Spirit of Comics Retailer Award” in 2016. This was my first FBCD since moving to Dublin, though I’d been a mail-order customer for many years and needless to say, the lads put on an absolute belter of a show. People began lining up at 5 am for a 9 am opening and over 500 people showed up to collect their comics in the first hour alone. The range of comics on offer from 50 sanctioned books, to smaller independent works from Irish creators was unparalleled. Not to mention the deals on off, everyone who popped along from the young to the young-at-heart seemed to really enjoy themselves. This is comics as they should be, a unifying medium that brings those people together and alienates none. Maith sibh lads, maith sibh.

Cool Comics and Games

Cape Coral, FL

Cool Comics and Games

As the only comics and game shop in sleepy Cape Coral, FL, Cool Comics and Games is a geek port in a land of bars, boat docks, tourist stops, big box stores and labyrinthine canal waterways. Founded in 2003, the store is not only always current with its weekly shipment of new books, it also has a strong (and neatly organized!) section of affordable back issues and classic and new toy collectibles as well.

But perhaps the best thing is the sense of community the store brings. Tom and his small staff are not only friendly but knowledgeable and thoughtful as well. A good half of the store is set up with long tables that not only serve in helping host various weekly game nights, but you’ll also find fans sitting around reading, snacking, and talking comics and games. As a fairly recent transplant to this smallish town, Cool Comics and Games felt like home as soon as I walked in. And in my opinion, that’s the key feeling that any great comic shop can give a reader.

This year they once again hosted a great Free Comic Book Day, with people lined up before opening. A great diverse crowd of fanboys, gamers, kids, cosplayers and families! ‘Nuff said!

Dr. Cain’s in San Luis Obispo

For the last few years, on the first Saturday in May, I’ve headed down to Dr. Cain’s in San Luis Obispo to get my free comics. The business always has something going on during FCBD, whether it be samples of food, custom t-shirt designs, raffles, and more. Despite the shop’s small size, it always brings a great atmosphere that is fun for all comics fans – whether you’re into Archie, Sonic The Hedgehog, the classics, or the “standard” Marvel and DC. If you’re even mildly into comics, I’d recommend heading to your local comic book store on Free Comic Book Day to join in on the fun.

River City Comics Berlin, NJ

In celebration of FCBD, the focus of River City Comics was on sales. With storewide discounts up to 60% off, patrons were able to add stacks of key issues to their collections in addition to grabbing their free comics. The experience at River City is always superb, it’s a haven for we comic book obsessed. The two guys running the shop are the most welcoming and delightful retailers in NJ. They’re fairly priced and extensive selection is what gets you through the door, the conversations and enthusiastic debates had within are what keeps you.

Vault of Midnight

Grand Rapids, Michigan

In celebration of Free Comic Day, Downtown Grand Rapids Inc (DGRI) set up a sidewalk festival. Food trucks, sidewalk vendors, and people in costume were everywhere. The line stretched down the block and around the corner. The local staff of The Vault of Midnight had a stand out front with a “Wheel or Destiny” where you could spin for a prize.

Big Finish to present Torchwood Season 5

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The last time Torchwood graced the small screen was with Miracle Day, in 2011. The series received mixed reviews from fans, but is part of the official canon. Torchwood has been novels and audio drams since then, most recently from Big Finish.

Torchwood fans have warmly received Big Finish audios. Thus far the Torchwood dramas have come from all along the timeline. With much of the original main cast gone by the end of 2009, this has allowed them to bring back fan favorite characters.

Now, however, Big Finish is tackling an even greater challenge. Starting in August, they will begin releasing Torchwood season 5. Still audio dramas, this series will directly follow the events after Miracle Day.

Aliens Among Us will see Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper returning to Cardiff and restarting Torchwood. But things have changed and new threats loom. Besides Rhys and Andy there will be new characters as well. The series is produced by James Goss and will be released in three parts.

RICK AND MORTY Season 3 Episode 2 and the Rickmobile

Monkeys Fighting Robots

It’s been just over a month since audiences were treated to the April Fools’s “non-prank” season 3 premiere episode of Rick and Morty. But since then, the folks at Adult Swim have been mostly radio silent in regards to the next episodes.

Fans anticipate any news on the plot or release date for Season 3 Episode 2 of Rick and Morty, which, according to the show’s official Twitter account, is entitled “Rickmancing the Stone.”

What we also know, other than the title, is that it will air sometime in the summer. This tidbit, revealed during a promo that premiered during the April Fools episode, “The Rickshank Redemption,” can be seen here:

Fans may infer the plot of the second episode from its title. Rick and Morty typically has plots that play on the title of the movie that the episode references.

“The Rickshank Redemption,” a play on The Shawshank Redemption, explored how Rick escaped from the Galactic Prison.

“Rickmancing the Stone” is undoubtedly a play on the 1984 movie, Romancing the Stone. The action-adventure film involves searching for a sister and an important gemstone. We can infer the next episode’s plot will mimic this in some way.

How Pickle Rick plays into this is still unclear.

In the meantime, keep a lookout for the Rickmobile.

rick and morty rickmobile

This sweet ride is part of a promotional road trip called “Don’t Even Trip Road Trip.” This truck topped with a drooling Rick on his hands and knees is driving across the country. It will make a stop in most states, carrying Rick and Morty merchandise. You can see the Rickmobile tour list here.

As spring comes to an end, stay tuned for more updates about Season 3 of Rick and Morty.

First Official Clip From ‘Wonder Woman’ Shows The Warrior In Action

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Let’s Hope This Is The Last Time Steve Trevor Doubts Wonder Woman

After being criticized for the lack of marketing, things have picked up for ‘Wonder Woman‘ recently. With plenty of trailers and TV spots to go around, it was time to actually see a scene from this highly-anticipated project. The first clip dropped online and it effectively showcased the many facets of ‘Wonder Woman‘.

In the clip, Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) and Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) are cornered in an alleyway. Steve Trevor tries to protect Diana Prince but ends up needing saving himself. Using her bulletproof wrist gauntlets, Diana blocks oncoming bullets and hands out a major ass kicking. It’s odd to see Steve doubt Diana’s abilities as he’s obviously seen her on the island by this point. Maybe the role of protector is something he will struggle with.

More than just story, this clip also shows off some stunning camerawork and a pretty entertaining fight scene. For those doubting if ‘Wonder Woman‘ will look good, I’m curious to see their position on the film after this.

Let me know what you think about this clip in the comments below!

“Before she was Wonder Woman she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained warrior. When a pilot crashes and tells of conflict in the outside world, she leaves home to fight a war to end all wars, discovering her full powers and true destiny.”
-IMDB.com

The film stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, David Thewlis, Danny Huston, Elena Anaya, Connie Nielsen, Ewen Bremner, and Lucy Davis.

Check it in theaters on June 2, 2017!

‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ Review: It’s Time to Save the Galaxy… Again

Monkeys Fighting Robots

There are times when I can be a simple man. They’re not always common, but they come. My mind is an ever-racing clutter of overstimulated thoughts and unorganized confusion, but when I do find happiness, it’s often in the silly little things. Like a sentient tree who can only speak three words. Or an inexplicably hunky Chris Pratt being a ’80s manchild in outer space. Or a talking raccoon with a wicked sense of humor that loves to shoot things up.

James Gunn’s bizarre concoction of wisecracking shenanigans, space opera melodramatics and colorful action that became 2014’s widely profitable Guardians of the Galaxy was, in short, a blast, an oddly adorable, yet deeply weird, dysfunctional family misadventure that veered close enough to Marvel’s brand to stay true to their exhausting cinematic universe, while still remaining unique and, again, strange enough to stand out admit the others. It wasn’t perfect but it was exactly what Marvel’s brand needed: a frisky, poppy, splashy success that stayed true to form but found enough wiggle room to stand out on its own. It was syncretic and friendly, yet just prickly and unorthodox enough to distinguish itself from its peers. This gang of misfits might be assholes, but they were goofy and likable assholes.

Which leads us to Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2, Gunn’s second madcap effort inside the galactic outer realms of Marvel’s fantastical space-based recesses. Peter Quill (Pratt), a.k.a. Star-Lord, an oversexed boy man with a heart of gold, Rocket Racoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper), a rambunctious raccoon that yells more than it talks, Gamora (Zoe Saldana), the green-skinned son of Thanos with a desire to do good for the galaxy, Drax (Dave Bautista), a muscular alien with very few social skills and Baby Groot (voiced, as far as they tell us, by Vin Diesel), the now-adolescent walking/talking tree we once knew before, are back, and they’re just as disoriented as ever. Traveling around the galaxy with a greater sense of purpose after their previous endeavor, they’re cockier but still, well, out of their element.

Through a grave mishap or two, they wind up in the bad graces of Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki), a golden ruler with a snarl, which results in battling more than a few foes ready to blow them into smithereens. But that’s only the beginning of their problems. Throughout the course of their roughhousing, they cross paths with Ego (Kurt Russell), an older gentleman who claims to be Peter’s father. Having been abandoned by his pops from an early age, Peter feels resentment towards this mysterious man, yet can’t help wanting to mend their relationship and make up for lost time. The other Guardians, most notably Gamora, however, are dubious — at best — of Ego, yet Quill decides to trust him, hoping to finally find a proper parent figure in his life. Particularly as Yondu (Michael Rooker), the wild-eyed blue-skinned criminal who actually raised him, continues to forge through his criminal space-based misgivings. To top it all off, Nebula (Karen Gillan), Gamora’s half sister, is hot on the Guardians’ tail, hoping to enact her final vengeance on her sibling.

There are space battles and there are slightly crass gags, but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a lot more centralized on the characters. The idea of fatherhood, both with Pratt’s predicament and Nebula and Gamora’s disdain for their all-powerful father, is one explored to odd depths, yet admit all the bizarre antics thrown onto the screen, there’s a level of honesty and sincerity to it all that rings true, emotionally. The island of misfit toys angle is given more heft and weight this time around, as we see that these characters are all more broken and disfigured than we initially believed. Admit all the wacky galactic action, these characters are trying to find their own central gravity. Admit all the nonsensical acts, they’re just trying to find some sanity in their unstable lives. It’s not Shakespeare per se, but it’s surprisingly heartfelt and, in its own weird way, sorta sweet, notably by its warm ending. Gunn infuses a great sense of perspective and identity to his blockbuster sequel, which helps enrichen this newest Marvel sequel in ways that the others often appear flat.

It also helps that this movie simply looks gorgeous. From the set designs, which are awe-inspiring, to the detailed make-up, which is simply stunning, to the lively cinematography, with a wide array of bubblegum colors that pop and dazzle, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a delightfully eye-catching movie, which isn’t something you can always say about the MCU. There are no washed-out colors and there are no bland color schemes. This is clearly a movie with a director at the helm, and that’s something I hope to say for more Marvel movies in the near future. These movies need to feel alive, and they should own up to their comic book origins more. Thankfully, Gunn is up to that particular task. It’s like a candy store filled with delectable treats for as wide as your eye can see. It’s scrumptious looking.

But like a kid in a candy store, Gunn winds up maybe a little too hyper and overstimulated for his own good. While the first Guardians of the Galaxy felt focused and contained, Vol. 2 is a lot more scattershot and all over the place, to the point where it’s pretty exhausting. There are not a lot of wasted moments here, yet everything feels tiresome in a way that the first movie simply did not. Perhaps it’s simply the superhero fatigue kicking in more and more with each passing year, or the fact that there’s virtually no way that this sequel can be as unexpected and unique as the first movie (though it tries as it might, bless it), but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 just doesn’t quite compare to the original film. It has a lot of lofty ambitions, and it’s harder for Gunn to keep up with all the balls he’s juggling. But it works, at least more than it doesn’t, and while it’s certainly more lumpy and bumpy than the first film, there are hardly any moments where you’re bored, especially since there are simply so many things happening in this movie, it’s hard not to be stimulated.

To delve into more would be to discuss spoilers, and while there are certainly more than a few leaked by now, it’s best to go into Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 with a clean slate. It’s a more complicated and layered film than the first, but it doesn’t loose its rambunctious spirit. The characters are still endearing, the antics are still amusing, and it’s clear that there’s an inspired filmmaker at the helm, which isn’t something you get often these days with your blockbuster spectacles. Above all else, however, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a great deal of fun. Weird, bonkers fun, but fun nonetheless. It might not be as simple or sublime as the first movie, but that’s okay. Because it knows how to keep it all enjoyable.

Cable Girls Connects Sex, Betrayal, Murder, And Freedom All On Netflix

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Netflix’s content avalanche brings Cable Girls, a show born in Spain about four women looking for freedom in the roaring 20s. Netflix knows how to pick shows and so far they haven’t had a real miss. The shows they select cater to particular crowds. In-between hits like Orange is the New Black and Stranger Things, Netflix takes smaller swings, and the payoff is working like a charm. What crowd does Cable Girls cater to and will that group be satisfied?

Cable Girls (Las Chicas Del Cable) takes place in Spain, where the first building ever constructed for telephone service. A whole new staff of women is hired to run the switchboards. One of those girls Lydia “Alba” Aguilar who is first seen running for freedom with a friend. That moment is cut show when her friend’s husband shows up, threatening to kill them both. Lydia tries to save the day but ends up the only survivor of a double-murder. Lydia is held responsible for the murder and the crooked cop holding Lydia’s fate in his hands uses her to steal money from the new telephone service building.

Originally produced in Spain, the first thing you might notice about Cable Girls is the English dub. Some people find the out of sync lip movement a little distracting. However, the voice over work is spot on and well-done. Each character has a unique voice meaning the production took the time to create character with voice.

Cable Girls’ story only revolves around the murder-theft plot for a couple of episodes. Unlike most American shows that would draw out that plot thread for a whole season, Cable Girls uses it as a starting point to tell the story of four women, each trapped by circumstance.

Carlota Rodriguez is searching for sexual freedom and finds it in the arms of a man … and a woman. Often, all three share a bed, but it were a way of life alien and frowned upon by society.

Marga came to Spain to work as a telephone operator. The meek, fearful woman doesn’t know what life in the “big city” will bring, but she forges ahead. Marga seeks freedom from her insecurities, even if that freedom terrifies her.

Wrapped in the Cable Girls story are murder, betrayal, love, and equality. Of course, one of the strongest themes is female empowerment, but it’s a show with fully-realized characters, each, male or female, dealing with the best and worst of each other.

Cable Girls is a fantastic series with almost no weak spots. If viewers can’t deal with the lip-syncing, that might pose a problem. The only other gripe is the music which is a bit scattershot. For some scenes, the music is just the right addition, enriching the moment. During other parts, the music is completely out of left field, taking scenes out of the roaring 20s and putting it in a half-modern time. The end credits theme is Spanish rap song that seems to have no place in the show.

Cable Girls – TL;DR
