Hello, Johnny And Other Thoughts On Twin Peaks Part 10

Monkeys Fighting Robots

In its tenth week, Twin Peaks attempts to bring its various mysteries closer together while keeping the biggest questions of all obscure in the mist. Like Jerry Horne, we’re still lost in the forest trying to puzzle it together while hopped up on the good stuff. But, as always, the show offers us a few footholds to use.

The Case

Richard Horne is a bad man. After dealing with Miriam (Sarah Jean Long), his daily chores lead him to his grandmother’s house. Sylvia, already dealing with Johnny’s recent spill, is none too happy to see him. But Richard doesn’t care. He steals money from her purse and her safe. He also takes some collectable spoons for bad measure. After the home invasion, Sylvia calls on Ben for some sort of financial relief. His response is to ask Beverly out to dinner. Sylvia always puts Ben on edge, but no, Ben. Don’t give into temptation. That never ends well.

Oh, and the reason for Richard’s rage-spree? Miriam sent a little to the Sheriff’s department naming Richard as the man who hit the boy a few days back. Luckily Deputy Chad Broxford — officially the worst man in town — intercepted the letter before Lucy could see it. Granted, Lucy seems to be on to him anyway. Hell, even the mailman thought Chad looked suspicious. He’s so the worst.

Over in Vegas, the Mitchum brothers lean that Ike the Spike was arrested. They also learn from Anthony that Dougie was the Mr. Jackpots who rolled their casino a week or so back. They’re none to thrilled. But considering the way it played out — and Candie’s (Amy Shiels) amazing performance — it’s unclear if they actually bought Anthony’s story. He’ll have to kill Dougie himself if the Mitchums don’t buy it. But little do they know they’re all pawns of Bad Cooper.

The Updates

Becky and Steven’s relationship has hit a snag. I suppose they’ve run out of money again as he says they can’t afford the trailer they rent from Carl. He, meanwhile, considers their relationship — and the accompanying fights — to be a nightmare. It’s hard not to feel for Amanda Seyfried, whose eyes invite compassion and understanding. But Becky took so much from Shelly and the RR that it’s tough to empathize with her. Hopefully, her husband won’t be too much like Leo going forward.

Oh, and hey, Johnny’s still alive. Sylvia even got him a teddy bear to talk with over breakfast. Of course, it doesn’t clear up the Richard mystery. He’s presumably Audrey’s son, but that leaves a bigger mystery lurking on the edge of the frame.

Meanwhile, it seems Nadine turned her silent drape runners into a thriving business. She watches Dr. Jacoby’s program from her shop, “Run Silent, Run Drapes.” And though she was smart enough to turn her wacky invention into a career, she’s still under Jacoby’s spell. Does she even remember that he used to be her shrink?

And probably making her last appearance is Catherine Coulson as Margaret Lanternman, the Log Lady. She tells Hawk that the Truman brothers are “True Men” and that he should trust in those close to him. I guess that means even she can see Chad is bad news. He really is the worst.

Oh, but she also told him that Laura is the one. That has to be significant, right?

The Questions

  1. When will Cooper wake up? Even sex with Janey-E couldn’t bring his mind into focus. Will it take seeing a familiar face?
  2. What is Candie’s deal? She couldn’t handle swatting Rodeny Mitchum (Robert Knepper), but seemed so disconnected from reality the next day. The Mitchums are disinclined to fire her. Why?
  3. Where is Audrey? We’ve asked this before, but is she still in the coma?
  4. Is Audrey Richard’s mother? Did Ben or Sylvia try to raise him? That would explain why he’s such a terrible person.
  5. Is Diane in league with Bad Coop? Or does she assume he’s the real deal?
  6. Why did Gordon have that vision of Laura when Albert knocked on his door?
  7. Where’s Big Ed? Are he and Nadine still together?

Not about Judy

Albert’s found love with the Buckhorn coroner and it’s sweet as hell. When a guy as caustic as Albert Rosenfield can find love, it brings a little hope to the rest of us.

Beyond that, he brought the text log from Diane’s phone to Gordon. So now they know Diane is in contact with Bad Coop, even if his nature is still a mystery to them. They also know that she told Bad Coop about Hastings. Meanwhile, Tammy brought in the most interesting piece of evidence yet: a photo of Bad Coop at the New York penthouse from Part 1. But who is he talking to? Is that the mysterious billionaire? Is it Jeffries himself?

Hello, Johnny!

Let’s talk about Candie for a moment. Shiels offers an amazing performance as the key member of the Mitchums’ entourage. When we saw them last, their disaffected stares in the face of brutality seems a typical Twin Peaks quirk. But now, even the Mitchums see Candie’s slowness to respond as an issue. In fact, they are the first characters ever to notice the drawn out pauses in LynchLand. But is this only because it was Candie? Her hours-long tearfest for swatting Rodeny would suggest some sort of expected reprisal, but the brothers seem so reticent to hurt her. I’d love to know why.

I’d also love to see Audrey, but the show keeps her as much as mystery as Annie Blackburn.

Meanwhile, for those trying to keep up with the timeline, it seems at least two weeks have gone by since Cooper became Dougie. Long enough for Janey-E to forgive her husbands transgressions with Jade. Of course, it must help that Cooper is in much better shape than Dougie could ever hope to be.

All of which leaves us with an episode I hesitate to call “perfunctory,” and yet no better word comes to mind. While some of the mysteries are coming together, the great mystery of Twin Peaks still looms large. Do you agree? Feel free to share your opinion in the comments below.

‘Wish Upon’ Review: The Only Horror In This Film Is Having To Sit Through It

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Wish Upon is an odd combination of a horrible narrative, underdeveloped characters, poor pacing, and campy death scenes that will elicit more groans than scares from the audience.

Summary

Any movie reviewer with a conscience should wish that audiences not be subjected to this type of gross attempt at making a horror film. However, if someone in the family is insistent on seeing it, we might as well let everyone know what they are in for. This narrative (and I use the term story loosely) centers around 17-year-old Clare (Joey King) and how her mother’s suicide has turned into a socially repressed individual who is subject to ridicule from her peers. She lives in a dilapidated two story home with junk collection father played by a very weathered looking Ryan Phillippe. Riddled with guilt, her father is always looking for presents to give his daughter and happens to stumble upon an old Chinese music box shaped like an octagon. Of course, Clare just happens to know just enough Mandarin to be able to see that it’s a box which gives seven wishes. She immediately finds this to be ridiculous but still keeps the box closed.

After a particularly exasperating day full of her being teased by her classmates, she comes home and collapses on the bed. She then lets emotions get the best of her and proceeds to wish that Darcie (the meanest girl in school) would “just go rot”. Not only was she shocked that her wish worked, but was taken aback by news that a close friend of her families died at the same time. She chalks it up to some horrid coincidence and moves forward. We then are subjected the long repetitive cycle of grand wishes, less than believable deaths, and melodramatic regret throughout this painful 90-minute film. Audiences are supposed to be invested in whether Clare will ever get rid of the music box but in reality, are just waiting for the film to reach its whimpering conclusion.

Wish Upon

What Worked

The audience seems to enjoy when Clare was hit by a car towards the end of the movie because at least we knew that the end was near.

What Didn’t Work

Why would you eliminate the most interesting elements of the W.W. Jacobs story ‘The Monkey Paw’? Your whole narrative is based on a story that has been used countless times in horror films, and the first decision was to dumb it down? If director John Leonetti wanted to retell that story once more, he should have made sure it was an interesting one to tell.

Ryan Phillippe can’t be this uninteresting on screen. He is supposed to come off as this man who is in mourning and uses his junk collecting as a coping mechanism. In the film, he looks weathered, older, and certainly happy that someone made the error in judgment to cast him.

What was with the use of a bright color palette for 85% of the film? The storyline might have been riddled with issues, but at the very least they could have created the atmosphere which most would expect in this type of film.

The melodramatic moments in the film caused the story to drag on. What was only a 90-minute film, seemed like an eternity.

Screenwriter Barbara Marshall appears to create characters with the sole purpose of being killed off. While I understand that this is supposed to be a horror film, but the audience should have some investment in who these people are.

Overall

Broadgreen Pictures made Wish Upon with an extremely lean budget of around $12 million. Even with how bad a film the final product is, there is still an audience of people who will still pay to see this drivel. It is insulting to lump a movie like this in the same genre as Get Out with there being such a contrast in the overall quality of each release. My advice is that if anyone in your family wants to watch a good horror film, go rent Get Out and avoid movies that will leave you bewildered.

The Announcement Of The Thirteenth Doctor Elicits Quite A Response

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Doctor Who fans everywhere waited with bated breath as the Wimbledon men’s final concluded and BBC announced the identity of who would be taking over the role of the good Doctor. Jodie Whittaker, who gained fame for her tremendous work in the show Broadchurch was announced as the 13th Doctor and social media went into overdrive. The majority of it was extremely positive. Check out Alex Kingston (best known for playing River Song) and her reaction on stage at a local comic-con.

Check out the reaction of Pearl Mackie (the actress who will more than likely be playing her companion on the show)

https://twitter.com/Pearlie_mack/status/886609685213851650

Fans, however, seemed to be somewhat conflicted about the decision. Many of them took to social media to voice their displeasure. Check out some of their posts

Once again it looks like we have a case of those same people who were up in arms about the Ghostbusters reboot voicing their displeasure because God forbid a woman takes over any role a man used to occupy. Obviously, a man is only capable of playing an alien time traveler who fights weird looking aliens with a screwdriver and travels in a phone booth. How dare we assume that any lady has the talent to pull that off? What’s sad is that I only posted a few of the negative reactions to the casting announcement and could have posted much more. Fans have to understand that traditions evolve and that times change. The type of hate that Paul Feig and Leslie Jones got for simply just being in a movie last year was disgusting. Let’s just keep calm and give this a chance. If after the Christmas special, Ms. Whittaker doesn’t live up to the fans’ expectations then they’ll end up replacing her based on the quality of her work. It’s been done before.

How Bumblebee Can Save The Transformers Franchise

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Transformers: The Last Knight has come and gone. But soon we’re promised to get a Bumblebee solo movie which will kick start a Transformers cinematic universe and act as a harbinger for the death of cinema. I kid, I kid. Seriously though, Bumblebee is coming in 2018, and the franchise needs a makeover. So, what can the Bumblebee movie do to pull the franchise out of an endless cycle of explosions, terrible jokes, and nonsensical storytelling?

PRACTICAL CGI

If the Transformers movies are nothing else, they are delicious eye-candy and spectacular in their use of computer generated imagery. However, even some diehard fans say it’s a little too much and too often. Another point of argument from filmgoers are the muddy transformation effects. One of the fun things about Transformers back in the day was how simple a car turned into a robot. Bring that back and marry it with the incredible CG. Keep it clean and quick.

BOND, CHARACTER BOND

For the people working on the Bumblebee movie, please watch movies like Iron Giant and Wall-E. Learn from these films. The reason they work is not because of a cool robot (though, that does not hurt) but because the robot has a soul and in the case of Iron Giant the robot bonds with a human. Create this relationship with Bumblebee and one or more characters. Make us care about this and then put it through hell.

KEEP IT FAST & FURIOUS

If you’ve read this far, you might be thinking “tone down the CG?” “Add character bonding?” Don’t make Transformers boring! It’s the opposite, the ideas here are to streamline the Bumblebee movie, so it retains the frenetic action but adds a little more story that doesn’t become a convoluted mess.

My Pitch For The Bumblebee Movie

ACT ONE

It’s several years after the events in Transformers 5. Man and machine are working in harmony, and the world is on its way to a progressive society. New technologies make it possible to end hunger and even colonize Mars. However, a rash of violence by an extremist group is causing concern.

The film centers around AGENT, a gruff investigator who works alongside the machines, specifically, Bumblebee. The EXTREMISTS are trying to get their hands on a weapon that would give them incredible power. AGENT and Bumblebee are tasked with recovering SCIENTIST, one of the creators of the weapon.

When Act 1 ends we meet SCIENTIST and learn that weapon is a nano-virus that could kill all the machines. The EXTREMISTS appear, and they are lead by Noonan Cain, a cyborg who dreams of a world with a new master life-form. Bumblebee, SCIENTIST, and AGENT escape, but it sets off …

ACT TWO

An epic chase sequence the likes not seen since Mad Max: Fury Road. It turns out, under Cain’s control are three Transformers, Barricade, Drift and Hot Rod. The high-tempo sequence runs us through the ruins of cities and ends when the group escapes into the Seattle Underground.

During this sequence we see the new transformation process and learn that Bumblebee’s occupants remain inside when he’s in robot form, making the Transformers into Mech-like machines ala Pacific Rim. Humans can control certain weapon systems to allow Bumblebee’s other systems to work at optimal levels.

While underground, Bumblebee reveals to SCIENTIST that AGENT lost his family in the events of Transformers 5 while helping the robot. AGENT and Bumblebee have been together ever since. SCIENTIST then reveals that the virus and Cain were working under the order of a shadow government. The virus was meant to be a “precaution, ” but it was Cain’s plan to steal it for himself. SCIENTIST destroys the data, but there is a backup in a facility in the Rocky Mountains.

On the road to the Rockies, the EXTREMISTS attack and another epic chase sequence begins. Bumblebee and the group are cornered at the Hoover Dam when AGENT has a terrible idea. They destroy the damn and race against the rushing water that takes out the EXTREMISTS. AGENT and the group survive and reach the facility.

ACT THREE

In Act 3, AGENT and SCIENTIST head down into the facility while Bumblebee keeps watch. As it turns out, Cain is already in the lab with the virus in hand. Outside, Bumblebee is ambushed by the three Transformers.

The final act bounces between Bumblebee’s battle against his own and the fight for the virus. Cain is killed by AGENT who manages to inject the virus into him, causing his machine parts to fail and release his control over the Transformers. Barricade and Drift retreat, but the third, Hot Rod, is too corrupted and continues to fight. Scientists destroys all information regarding the virus.

Bumblebee and Hot Rod ruthlessly fight back and forth. AGENT and SCIENTIST are trying to deliver the last of the virus that will kill Hot Rod. Bumblebee orders AGENT to stop, hoping he can save his friend Hot Rod, but after Hot Rod kills SCIENTIST (which gives her character redemption for the guilt of creating the virus in the first place), Bumblebee is forced to kill Hot Rod.

Bumblebee and AGENT ride off into the sunset.

In an after credits scene, Barricade and Drift are seen walking together when their eyes change color, signifying they’re back under the control of Cain.

CUT TO:

In the wreckage of the storage facility, Cain’s cyborg eye flickers on and off … the on.

‘IT’ Director Andres Muschietti Talks The Film’s Hard “R”-Rating

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Andy Muschietti’s ‘IT’ Is Going Places The Mini-Series Never Did

Are audiences ready for another dose of Pennywise, The Dancing Clown? There are only a few months to prepare as the hype for Andy Muschietti’s IT grows. Director Andres Muschietti (Mama) spoke with French magazine Mad Movies about holding nothing back with his version of Stephen King’s novel IT. “This is an R rated movie. I’m very happy about that because it allows us to go into very adult themes,” said Muschietti.

He continued with this:

“Each ‘loser’ knows a situation of despair, on top of the terror of It and the fear of heights. Beverly’s case is, of course, the worst, because it’s about sexual abuse on a minor. But each kid is neglected one way or the other. Bill is like a ghost in his own home: nobody sees him because his parents can’t get over Georgie’s death. Of course, Ben is bullied at school. We don’t know much about Richie’s personality because he’s the big mouth of the group. But we suppose he’s also neglected at home, and he’s the clown of the band because he needs attention. Long story short, there are all sorts of difficult situations, and we had the chance to tell them in a movie that faces directly those conflicts. In particular, the families of the young actors were very open-minded, so we could tell the about subjects that are normally very touchy.”

Andres Muschietti further went on to talk about this film always being an R-rating. He said this to Mad Movies, “From our very first discussion with the people from New Line, it was understood that the movie was gonna be rated ‘R.’ Of course, it was already crazy that they started a story revolving around the death of children. But if you aimed for a PG-13 movie, you had nothing at the end…”

It sounds like the relatively infamous moments the 1990 mini-series left out will find a place in this film. With PG-13 being profitable for studios but a sore subject for horror fans, Andres Muschietti’s bold choice is a gamble. Hopefully, the R-rating pays off as this is the first part of a two-part series.

Will you see IT? What do you think of the R-rating? Let me know in the comments below.

“The Losers Club” is played by Jaeden Lieberher, Finn Wolfhard, Jack Dylan Grazer, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs and Jeremy Ray Taylor. Javier Botet will play The Leper, and Nicholas Hamilton plays Henry Bowers. Bill Skarsgard is playing Pennywise.

The film will be in theaters September 8, 2017.

Mark Ruffalo Calls Out Universal Over ‘Hulk’ Film Rights; “They Don’t Like Money”

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Mark Ruffalo was asked if a solo Hulk film is still a possibility, and he responded with a pretty passionate answer.

“I want to make one thing perfectly clear today. A stand-alone Hulk movie will never happen because Universal has the rights to the stand-alone Hulk movie and, for some reason, they don’t know how to play well with Marvel. And clearly they don’t like money.”

No Maybe About New ‘Buddy Thunderstruck’ Special

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The surprise hit from American Greetings and Stoopid Buddies Stoodios is back again. Buddy Thunderstruck and his best friend Darryl return in their own choose your own adventure style episode. Considering the characters regularly getting in such random and bizarre adventures, would adding structure by giving the audience a say hinder the show? Not in the slightest!

Writing

A fun concept which will have the audience wanting to research the episode. The pair tries every crazy ideas they had in the Maybe Pile, a bag they put in all the ideas they didn’t think were good enough to try in the moment. This results in them attempting insane ideas like trying to get super powers and drinking three espressos in a row all in an effort to find the one awesome idea they put in the bag. This is where the audience interaction comes in as two different choices will appear on your device and you will have the option of picking which one you want to play out. It’s a great concept which more shows would benefit from trying. On top of the concept itself being entertaining the episode is filled the type of humor fans have come to expect from this series. You are almost guaranteed to laugh.

Buddy Thunderstruck

Animation

The quality animation did not decrease at all from the from first season. Considering this is a single special, the team could have easily just slapped something together and called it good but instead they decided to make sure every aspect of the episode was top shelf. Always good when a studio keeps a certain level of production in their work.

Acting

Another aspect of this special which is on par with first season is the acting. The cast give just as entertain a performance and make sure to stay true to their characters. Of course, the cast is a little light than in other episodes as it focuses more on just Darryl and Buddy but considering how good those two work together, there is no problem at all.

Conclusion

The Maybe Pile wins on two fronts. First it makes you want more by showcasing how much fun can be had with the choose you own adventures style of presentation. Second it reminds everyone just how entertaining the characters of this series are and how they still have plenty of adventures they can go on. Hopefully all goes well, more specials will be ordered, and someday we get “Maybe Pile 2: Electric Boogaloo.”

“Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job” Receives Season 6 Special

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! will be returning to Adult Swim for a season 6 special episode. Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim, the titular duo doing the awesome job, announced the episode during their “10 Year Anniversary Awesome Tour” on July 14th in New York City. The exact air date of the episode has not been declared yet, but the duo did confirm that it will be on television at some point in the fall.

The episode itself, which was shown in its entirety during the tour, is apparently filled with references to the series’ entire run. Considering that the last episode aired in 2010, the new material could be considered something of a refresher course, if it’s actually possible to forget things like Spagett or their bizarre “Chrimbus Special.” Either way, the episode is guaranteed to please longtime fans of Tim and Eric, although because of this, its ability to convert newcomers is questionable.

This isn’t exactly the end of some longstanding hiatus, however; the duo have been up to quite a few things since 2010. On Adult Swim alone, they have Check It Out! with Steve Brule and Tim & Eric Bedtime Stories, both of which are Tim and Eric spinoffs, with the latter an appropriately strange horror anthology series. Heidecker also works on the Adult Swim series Decker, while Wareheim is one of the best parts of the excellent Master of None series on Netflix.

At the end of the New York show, the duo gave special thanks to Bob Odenkirk, who they praised for being an early “champion” of their offbeat, surrealist work. Odenkirk, of course, likely saw the series as a successor to his own extremely strange Mr. Show with Bob and David, a sketch comedy series co-starring David Cross. Mr. Show received something of a reboot for Netflix in 2016.

Are you excited for more Tim and Eric?
