Latest BLACK MIRROR Season 4 Preview Goes STAR TREK

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Star Trek has been quite the news item over the last 24 hours. First, it was Quentin Tarantino and JJ Abrams working on a new spec for a fourth Star Trek film. Now, Black Mirror Season 4 has unveiled a preview of its own Star Trek-themed episode.

The episode is called “U.S.S. Callister.” Check it out:

So that looks pretty wild, yeah? The tone of this preview doesn’t jibe with the rest of the Black Mirror Season 4 previews, but certainly this whole storyline relates to a simulation where these people are in some sort of mind prison where their soul is being stripped away piece by technological piece. Just a guess.

Black Mirror is a fascinating show for Netflix, a Twilight Zone for the social media age, and it seems like a terrific spot for creators to get a foothold in the industry. Except all the shit that goes down here feels like it could actually happen one day, so the stories are even more horrific. At least to an extent. It’s a blast, really.

“U.S.S. Callister” is directed by Toby Haynes, and it stars the great Jesse Plemons, who is doing some sort of goofy ass accent. We don’t have any news regarding the release of Black Mirror Season 4, but it shouldn’t be long now. Perhaps January.

No. 1 With A Bullet #2

Writing

With its second issue, No. 1 With A Bullet takes a slight step back (until the end at least!) from the suspense to really focus on the emotions of its main character Nash. This issue opens with a very intense meeting between Nash and her employers and that emotional intensity doesn’t let up for the duration of the issue. Semahn really allows us to get to know Nash here and it makes the reader really connect with her. We also get to see how people react to her plight, both support groups and critics. The critics are especially powerful as we get a very well done ‘montage’ of the kind of venom that is usually spit out when some one’s personal life is spread out in the open. It’s human vindictiveness and mob mentality at it’s worst.  Semahn doesn’t hold back in his portrayal of these scum and it really makes you cringe.

It’s not all negative though, as we also get to spend time with Nash and her friend, someone she has known since high school, and part of a strong support group. The chemistry between these two is written extremely, with a natural bond being obvious. There is also therapeutic humor here, the kind that can only come with a very old friend.

The issue ends with a double whammy though that literally made me say, “oh shit!” Nash records a very direct and pointed statement revealing the details, including the identity of the culprit, of her sex tape. It is now out and in open and public. Nash is obviously fed up and is throwing down the gauntlet. It’s exhilarating to read. But then comes the real gut punch as a viewer notices something that puts a whole new spin on the book. It’s a great moment and it’s actually very frightening. It sets up the kind of cliffhanger that makes you eager to read the next issue.No. 1 With A Bullet

Art

No.1 With A Bullet is a great looking book. Jorge Corona does some amazing panel work here, dividing images in half and coming up with clever page layouts. There is also a lot of weight to the pencils, with thick lines and borders giving everything added texture.

The colors are vibrant without coming out too processed. Like the writing, they help ground this ‘cyberpunk’ tale. The palette is also fantastic as is the use of background and foreground contrast.

I must also mention the lettering, as it is subtle, but font plays a huge part in exposing feelings and emotions. We also have excellent use of social media posts as narrative devices.

Conclusion

No.1 With A Bullet is truly a comic for today’s social climate. It is the kind of sci-fi comic that elevates both the genre and the medium. But it’s far from just a social/political statement, as it grounds its important themes with well, written, relatable characters and some truly gorgeous art and design. Image continues to put out the best sci-fi comics in the medium, and you can add No.1 With A Bullet to that list.

Bryan Singer Releases a Statement About the BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY Firing

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Yesterday, after weeks of erratic behavior and fights with the cast, Bryan Singer was fired from the set of Bohemian Rhapsody, the new Queen biopic. It didn’t take the maligned filmmaker long to reply.

Singer released a statement regarding his firing – unannounced, unplanned absences from the set and arguments with star Rami Malek are said to be the main factors – and says something about an ill parent and it’s all Fox’s fault and… yeah:

Bohemian Rhapsody is a passion project of mine. With fewer than three weeks to shoot remaining, I asked Fox for some time off so I could return to the U.S. to deal with pressing health matters concerning one of my parents. This was a very taxing experience, which ultimately took a serious toll on my own health. Unfortunately, the studio was unwilling to accommodate me and terminated my services. This was not my decision and it was beyond my control. Rumors that my unexpected departure from the film was sparked by a dispute I had with Rami Malek are not true. While, at times, we did have creative differences on set, Rami and I successfully put those differences behind us and continued to work on the film together until just prior to Thanksgiving. I wanted nothing more than to be able to finish this project and help honor the legacy of Freddie Mercury and Queen, but Fox would not permit me to do so because I needed to temporarily put my health, and the health of my loved ones, first.

So you see, the studio is to blame. Not Singer for his weird behavior, or for throwing an object at Malek during an argument, or for the real reason this is all happening right now: Singer’s well-documented and seedy sexual misconduct history.

Perhaps Bryan Singer is having family health issues. It could be true. But it could also be a gross coverup for the real reason he’s been acting weird. The walls might be closing in, and just like when you forgot to turn in your essay in Freshman composition, you use the sick family member excuse.

The coincidences here are undeniable. Like Ricky Jay says in Magnolia, “this is not just, one of those things. It cannot be that.”

Bryan Singer’s production company, Bad Hat Harry, has also been removed from the lot. Which seems like an odd move for someone who was fired over ailing parents. A new director for Bohemian Rhapsody, which has only a couple of weeks of filming left on the schedule, is expected to be announced soon. Stay tuned!

Unused 2011 JUSTICE LEAGUE Script Reveals A Different DCEU

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The culmination of the current DCEU, Justice League, is currently making its theatrical run and has been seen as somewhat of a disappointment. The film is on pace to make less than any DCEU film to date and with the budget inflating following extensive reshoots, it’s going to have trouble breaking even. That has led many to think of what could have been, would we have been better off with Zack Synder’s original cut or would the current DC slate of films look different if George Miller’s Justice League Mortal was made all those years back, there is really no way of knowing.

What we can know is that in 2011, Gangster Squad writer Will Beall wrote a script for a Justice League film. Via The Wrap, we now have a rundown of what the script looked like. Here is a list of what The Wrap considered highlights from the script:

  • Though Steppenwolf is the lead villain in this year’s “Justice League,” Beall’s draft would have made his boss, Darkseid, the master of evil. That opening shark-tank battle ends with Desaad, one of Darkseid’s minions, killing Killer Croc and stealing Kryptonite that Luthor has just tried to buy from KGBeast, aka Anatoli Knyazev. At one point, Croc bites a shark.
  • While 2016’s “Batman v Superman” would pit the heroes against each other, the 2011 script imagined them as allies who know each others’ identities and have coffee at Metropolis Diner, where they chat about other DC superheroes like Diana (Wonder Woman), Green Lantern, Green Arrow and Aquaman. They soon travel to Central City to recruit Barry Allen, aka The Flash.
  • Amanda Waller and King Faraday run the Department of Metahuman Affairs and seize Killer Croc’s body. We also meet Abel Terrant (Tattooed Man), Copperhead, Barbara Minerva (Cheetah) and Solomon Grundy. Waller and Croc eventually met in 2016’s “Suicide Squad.”
  • In deep space, Green Lantern John Stewart and Thanagarian Katar Hol, aka Hawkman, engage in a cool action sequence inside a space-station nightclub as they try to stop Kanjar Ro from helping Dessad weaponize the Kryptonite. The first act ends with Superman kidnapped by Steppenwolf and the Parademons and taken back to Apokolips.
  • By the start of the second act, Batman goes to Themyscira to recruit Diana, with whom he has a romantic history.
  • Barry Allen, Green Lantern John Stewart and Diana have a meeting with Wayne inside the Batcave, which has several generations of Batmobiles and Batsuits, as well as Mr. Freeze’s Cyro-Gun, the Scarecrow’s Mask, and The Penguin’s Umbrella.
  • John Stewart returns to OA (Green Lantern headquarters) and finds the dead bodies of his fellow Lanterns: Katma Tui, Kilowag, Guy Gardner, Salakk, and Tomar-Re. The entire Lantern Corps has been massacred by Darkseid.
  • With the Lantern Corps out of the way, Darkseid invades earth at the midpoint of the script — with help from a brainwashed Superman. As he does in Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight Returns” and “Batman v Superman,” Wayne dons special armor to fight the Man of Steel. Diana manages to release Superman from Dessad’s mind control and Superman rejoins the League in the fight against Darkseid.
  • Superman goes through a Boom Tube and travels eleven years into the future to find that Darkseid has wiped out 80 percent of the Earth’s population. Diana leads the last of the human resistance with an aged and grey-haired Bruce Wayne as her second-in-command. They have a son named Clark Wayne, and one surprising member of the resistance is Lex Luthor.
  • The Future Batman leads a dozen fighters known as Batman’s Berzerkers. They include Slade Wilson (Deathstroke) George Harkness (Captain Boomerang), Helena Bertinelli (Huntress) and Barbera Minerva (Cheetah). Comics fans might also recognize this team as the members of Suicide Squad — though not exactly the Suicide Squad of last year’s film. The last of the resistance is headquartered inside Superman’s Fortress of Solitude.
  • Future Lex Luthor figures out a way to send Barry Allen back eleven years in time, partly using Darkseid’s Boom Tube. Future Flash goes back in time to before Darkseid’s invasion, and dies in younger self’s arms — after warning of the terrible future.
  • Diana, Bruce, Barry and Green Lantern travel to Apokolips and rescue Superman before Desaad can take over his mind, and the reunited Justice League battle Darkseid and his forces on Apokolips to stop the invasion of Earth. The entire Lantern Corps, along with the Amazons from Themyscira, join in the battle.
  • The script ends with Mercy Graves planning a presidential campaign for Lex Luthor and Luthor receiving a message from Future Luthor telling him of Superman’s secret identity: Clark Kent.

The script led Warner Brothers to sign Beall to a 2 picture deal, with the idea that his Justice League film would be made. Ben Affleck was even interested in directing the project. That obviously didn’t happen but it’s fun to look at a DCEU that could’ve been.

Quentin Tarantino and JJ Abrams Are Working on a New STAR TREK Movie. Honestly

Monkeys Fighting Robots

In a bizarre development, even for 2017’s lofty standards, it seems Quentin Tarantino and JJ Abrams are working on a Star Trek movie together. At least in some sort of capacity.

According to the story from Deadline, Tarantino pitched an idea to Abrams, who is busy working on Star Wars Episode IX. Not to mention the fact that QT is working on his ninth film, the one about 1969 but not specifically Charles Manson, at Sony. These dudes are all over the place, but still apparently have time to pitch an idea strong enough that a writer’s room is being put together to try and make this concept a reality.

Who knows if this will ever go beyond mere spitballing and brainstorming late nights in writer’s rooms. Quentin Tarantino and JJ Abrams working on a Star Trek story together feels like a mismatch made in heaven. Abrams can bring his Spielbergian sense of wonder back to the table, and Tarantino can inject some life into the words and the actions. The two almost teamed up many years ago for a Speed Racer film, but that wound up in the lap of the Wachowski’s.

Think of this pairing as sort of the milquetoast version of Tony Scott and Quentin Tarantino’s partnership on True Romance.

Stay tuned for details on this story, and to see if any of your other Mad Libs come true.

The 12 Days of Star Wars 2017: The Force Unleashed

Monkeys Fighting Robots

In the days leading up to the release of Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, we take a step into the larger world of Star Wars by examining the novels, games, comics, albums, TV series and audio dramas that have fed our imaginations over the years. Some of these you may be aware of and some you won’t, but regardless we hope that you seek out some of these works and give them the appreciation they deserve. May the Force be with you.

Nearly two years ago in movie theaters far, far away Star Wars returned to our screens with Episode VII: The Force Awakens. Loyal Monkeys Fighting Robots readers will remember we ran a series of articles in the lead up to the film’s release highlighting some of gems in the wider Star Wars canon. Now in anticipation of Episode VII: The Last Jedi, it is our pleasure to bring you The 12 Days of Star Wars 2017. We begin our retrospective on all things   with a look at a modern video-game classic in The Force Unleashed.

The Republic has fallen. The Jedi are no more. The Dark Side shrouds everything. There is only one law: the Empire. This time period between Episodes III and IV is known to fans across the world as “The Dark Times”. First mentioned by Tatooine’s resident crazy old wizard: Ben Kenobi, this era of the Star Wars franchise was a breeding ground for much of the early expanded universe novels and games. As LucasFilm began to delve more into the Clone Wars/prequel era, the focus switched the days before (or in the case of Knights of the Old Republic, long before). Throughout the franchise’s resurgence in the early 2000s, many younger fans had not experienced an adventure set in the 19 years or so of Emperor Palpatine’s rule. In the years following the release of Revenge of the Sith, rumours and concept art started emerging that hinted at a very different kind of Star Wars experience. In 2008, Lucasarts released Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and our perceptions of the saga were shaken to their very core.

Star Wars: ThForce Unleashed was the story of Galen Marek aka Starkiller: the secret apprentice of Darth Vader himself. Marek was the surviving son of Jedi slain right in front of him by the Emperor’s loyal enforcer during the great purge. Even as a boy, he showed himself to be in tune with the Force, disarming Vader as the cyborg strangled the boy’s father. Perhaps the Dark Lord of the Sith saw something of himself in him, a remnant of the man that was Anakin Skywalker, or maybe it was pure ambition. Whatever the reason, Vader abducted the boy and trained him in the Dark Side of the Force proving that the Rule of Two was more of a guideline than anything else. Honing him like a precision instrument, Vader sent his assassin to hunt down any remaining Jedi that dared to defy the Empire. It was on this journey that Starkiller met the elderly Jedi, Rahm Kota, and the love of his life, Juno Eclipse. It was a journey that would see Vader’s acolyte question his convictions and find himself tempted towards the Light Side. Starkiller would eventually shed that title and reassert himself as Galen Marek. In an act of self-sacrifice, Marek confronted his former master and nearly brought an end to the Emperor’s regime. Although lost to the nether-realm of the force, his death inspired inspired the very rebellion that he once vowed to destroy from within. The Alliance would honour his memory by taking his family symbol as their own.

Starkiller had a skill and knowledge of the Force that eclipsed anything that we had seen on screen. Powerful beyond imagination, this destructive understanding of the force informed the gameplay as much as it did the story. Previous Star Wars games featuring Force-users tended to focus on the Jedi as a Knight with your powers only being of secondary concern. In the Force Unleashed your skills with a lightsaber would only ever get you so far. If you wanted to experience everything the game had to offer, you had to channel your inner sorcerer more so than your inner swordsman. Whereas Sith lightning had in the past been a mere annoyance, in Starkiller’s hands it was if the very storm itself had submitted to his will. Stormtroopers and droids alike were rag-dolls before your might. Lucasarts used the Havok engine to imbue the game with a realistic physics engine that gave your every act weight. Each Force blast and manipulation felt earned, it took its toll not only on you, but the world too. This philosophy is exemplified in the game’s most iconic scene, where through his will alone, Starkiller rips a Star Destroyer from a planet’s atmosphere and crashes it into the Empire’s base. It is a scene that will forever remain etched into every Star Wars fan’s collective consciousness.
[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_aOR6H9h0I[/embedyt]

As tropey as the “secret apprentice” cliché may seem,  Star Wars: The Force Unleashed turned out to be one of the last great hurrahs for the struggling Lucasarts after a number of years of dwindling popularity. It was a game about nature vs nurture and about destiny itself. There are some thematic parallels between his character and that of Kylo Ren, especially in the game’s Dark Side ending, but the influence of Galen Marek’s tale on the franchise has only begun to be seen. It was the story of a man struggling for whatever agency he could scrape together in a universe that wanted nothing more than turn him into a tool of one side of the Force or the other. Marek was raised to be a weapon, but he found peace in being able to die as a man. The less said about the sequel the better.

Bryan Singer Fired From Queen Biopic BOHEMIAN RHAPDOSY

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Bryan Singer, one of the more elusive targets in the recent sexual misconduct uprising in Hollywood, has officially been fired from Bohemian Rhapsody, the Queen biopic starring Rami Malek.

The reasons aren’t necessarily tied to the rumors of Singer’s sexual misconduct – which are well documented and surprisingly dodgy – as they are to his erratic behavior on set. Which may or may not lend itself to the accusations that Singer has molested underage boys. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Singer was missing from the set regularly. When he was gone, cinematographer Thomas Newton Sigel, stepped in to shoot scenes.

The absence created tension between he and Malek, and it caused production to be shut down last week. Things were bad; Singer allegedly threw an object at Malek at one point. Now, it appears the embattled and – if we’re in the trust tree – genuinely creepy Singer has been removed altogether.

Singer has claimed PTSD regarding his trouble on set. That is maybe the most insulting, ridiculous claim. Oh, PTSD, Bryan? Let me introduce you to this person, who served two tours in Iraq. Own up, Singer. Stop hiding behind legitimate illnesses and admit to your own sickness.

Anywho… Rami Malek looks terrific as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. There’s no word as to who will step in and hopefully finish this movie. Someone get Joel Schumacher on the phone.

Not kidding.

DC on CW Weekly Review – Crisis on Earth-X Crossover Spectacular

Monkeys Fighting Robots

This series is NORMALLY brief, semi-comedic review of the CW superhero shows. You can check out last week’s review post here. However, since last week was the CW’s second all-series crossover event, this review post is special. We’re treating “Crisis on Earth-X” like a film, and discussing all 4 episodes at once. BEWARE OF INCOMING SPOILERS!!

CW unites all its heroes once again for a full-network crossover. ‘CRISIS ON EARTH-X’ is the second occasion where the CW uses all four of its superhero programs to tell a single story. It’s tough to juggle all those characters, and not every hero got equal play. However, the event managed to get some great beats out of several key players – including saying goodbye to a major player. ‘CRISIS ON EARTH-X’ is nothing if not a fun excuse to get all the heroes together for a fight.

CW

The premise for the crossover is short and sweet – superheroes fighting alternate reality Nazis. While all the heroes get together for the Allen-West Wedding, the service is cut short by a gaggle of alt-reality villains. Led by an evil Supergirl and Green Arrow, along with Reverse-Flash, these Nazis want to take down all opposition. Our heroes need to take down the new Reich to protect the multiverse from their evil Nazi ways.

As a broad conflict, and as a way to bring everyone together, ‘CRISIS ON EARTH-X’ works well. It’s a fairly simple set-up, but there’s nothing wrong with superheroes punching Nazis. The focus on fighting their evil equals makes for exciting television, particularly with SUPERGIRL and ARROW. While the Nazi Kara-Oliver marriage is dull, and nearly asks the viewer to sympathize with the Archer Führer, seeing the Oliver vs Oliver/Kara vs Kara fights were exhilarating.

It was also great to see Iris West and Felicity Smoak get some action. As the brides of superheroes, these two don’t always get a lot of action. But ‘CRISIS ON EARTH-X’ gives them compelling action as well as an emotional core to the event. It’s especially good because the emotional notes get a bit old – Iris loves Barry, Felicity hates marriage, rinse & repeat. By giving the two non-heroes some action sequences – notably crawling through the vents DIE HARD style – it keeps everyone in the action for a solid superhero story.

Unfortunately, Flash gets the short end of the crossover stick. Obviously the Allen-West wedding is lovely, and makes for a heartwarming TV event. Beyond getting married, though, Barry doesn’t have a compelling storyline. Once the wedding gets crashed in Part 1, Barry’s just a masked face in the crowd. He doesn’t even get a fun evil doppleganger! The wedding is lovely, but it’s only a bookend for the event. It’s a shame that such a huge, emotional event gets cheated out of its full effect. THE FLASH was really left out of the juicier parts of the crossover.

Victor Garber

By far the biggest reveal of “Crisis on Earth-X” was the death of Martin Stein. It was reported in October that the older half of Firestorm would be departing DC’s LEGENDS OF TOMORROW. As a critic who knew the news, it was hard not to see the departure as predictable, almost formulaic television. As a viewer, Garber’s departure was touching, especially as his death was coupled with his fatherly relationship with Jefferson. Especially since the second biggest LEGENDS storyline was White Canary’s one-night stand with Alex Danvers, it was an important plot line.

There were also several fun cameos in the event. We got another appearance from Leonard “Leo” Snart, a.k.a. Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller). The Earth-X Snart played hero once more, this time along with his superhero husband Ray “The Ray” Terrill (Russell Tovey). We also got several twists on familiar SUPERGIRL characters, including Guardian, Winn, and even Red Tornado. We also got a crazy return of Tom Merlyn as Earth-X Prometheus, and even if it only lasted a few minutes, it was crazy to see him return to the CW. One of the biggest draws of these big events are the Easter eggs, and ‘CRISIS ON EARTH-X’ certainly delivered.

Overall, ‘CRISIS ON EARTH-X’ was a solid two hours of Nazi-fighting fun. The wedding didn’t really play out that much, but it was sweet to see it happen nonetheless. The various storylines weren’t all strong, but enough was that the event had a natural and exciting flow. Not to mention we got White Canary’s great one-liner to Alex, asking “how’s your butt?” ‘CRISIS ON EARTH-X’ is exactly what fans expected and deserved. The only question left is how they’ll rope in RIVERDALE come the crossover event next season.

HERE AND NOW Trailer: Holly Hunter, Tim Robbins Headline HBO’s Latest Drama

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Here and Now, the new series from Alan Ball, starring Holly Hunter and Tim Robbins, looks to be angling for that Big Little Lies late-winter slot.

Thematically, it might have some similar things happening with Big Little Lies, but Here and Now also looks like it has a little bit of The Leftovers, and a little bit of Ball’s Six Feet Under in its DNA. Here’s a 50-second teaser to whet your appetite:

Here is a synopsis from The Playlist:

Starring the always great Holly Hunter and Tim Robbins, the series follows an ordinary multi-racial family — including a philosophy professor, his lawyer wife, their three adopted children from Somalia, Vietnam and Colombia, and their sole biological child — who are hiding deep secrets beneath a sunny exterior. Things change, however, when one of the children starts seeing things that others cannot. What it all means, well, you’ll just have to watch to find out.

This looks intriguing, but let’s just hope it doesn’t veer off into True Blood territory. At least wait until the third or fourth season to bring in the Bull Lady or whatever.

Here and Now will drop on HBO in February, around the same time Big Little Lies did last year. This is a trend worth supporting. Plus, any time Holly Hunter is on your screen you owe it to yourself to watch.
