Review: Bayley Busts Her Ass in WWE #15

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Babyface Bayley is the perkiest person on the WWE roster, and she’s simply a force to be reckoned with in BOOM! Studios WWE #15.

WWE 15 - Main Cover

STORY

There’s no doubt that Bayley was disappointed to be left behind in NXT when the rest of the Four Horsewomen (Charlotte Flair, Sasha Banks, and Becky Lynch) were brought up to the main roster of WWE. While we were left with an optimistic impression of her rise in last month’s story, we quickly learn that isn’t necessarily an easy task.

Bayley’s motivation to get better is fueled by her friends’ success, and we’re able to get inside her head and struggle with her. She soon runs roughshod through the NXT Women’s Division, but is it enough to prove her worth in the WWE? Dennis Hopeless leaves us wanting to know what’s next for The Huggable One.

WWE 15 - RAW and 'Ritos

ART

As usual, Serg Acuna gets these characters. We understand Bayley’s determination, her skepticism, her joy. We recognize Sasha’s confidence and vanity. And we notice Charlotte and Becky hanging back; they’re almost cautious when interacting with the other two ladies.

The highlight of the issue is the match between Bayley and Sasha at NXT Takeover: Brooklyn before Summerslam 2015. I remember watching this match live, and Acuna portrays this action with the same energy, passion, and vitality that the night brought about.

Bayley’s friendly interactions and gym panels are light and colorful, while Doug Garbark uses more intense colors and darker tones during the matches. These color choices are perfect for the contrasting emotions that Bayley is experiencing.

SIDE STORY

Tini Howard continues her introduction of Asuka to the NXT world in the next installment of her short story. Language definitely isn’t an issue for The Empress of Tomorrow, as her actions speak louder than her words, as Hyoenjin Kim depicts in his illustrations.  The story and artwork are a crisp and cutting, much like Asuka’s temperament.

CONCLUSION

Watching the NXT talent perform is sometimes more fun than watching the main roster Superstars. Their drive for success, their passion for progress, and their desire for victory is evident, and Bayley was no exception.  We know that she eventually makes it to the main roster, but what obstacles does she have ahead before she makes that jump? I can’t wait for next month’s issue to find out.

Marvel’s ‘Fresh Start’ Continues with X-23 #1 Announcement

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Laura Kinney is once again set to ‘snikt’ her signature dual-claws in a brand-new series this summer from creators Mariko Tamaki and Juann Cabal.

X-23 has been around for almost 15 years now and emerged as the heir to Wolverine as one of the more dynamic and ferocious characters in the Marvel Universe. This summer, the woman that was trained to be a weapon, that has been tested numerous times against some of the mightiest of foes, as a mutant, person and hero, though never gives up, will begin again.

“I am so psyched to have the opportunity to write for X-23,” Said Tamaki. “How often do you get to write a comic that has its own iconic sound effect? This is a story about being in the very weird kind of family that someone like Laura (X-23) finds herself in. It’s about what it means to wrestle with legacy and identity when you were created to be a weapon and not someone with a birthday and a sister. I love writing these characters, I love the ferocity that comes with them, and I love the supporting cast we’ve put together for these issues.”

This new series continues Marvel‘s ‘fresh start’ movement in revamping, reloading and, in some cases, overhauling its characters with new creative teams and storylines.

Make sure to check out X-23 #1 when it lands on shelves in July and click HERE for the complete release via Marvel.

RICK AND MORTY: HBO Should Pick Up Season 4

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Rick and Morty fans around the world are losing their shit right now at the thought of the series not returning for a fourth season.

According to the co-creator of the show Dan Harmon, Adult Swim has yet to order a fourth season. The lack of dialogue between Harmon and Cartoon Network is perplexing as Season Three was “the number one comedy across all of television” in the key 18-24 and 18-34 demographics. On top of that, the season finale was the highest-rated show in Cartoon Network history. Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.

Created by Harmon and Justin Roiland, the critically praised animated series follows a sociopathic genius scientist who drags his inherently timid grandson on insanely dangerous adventures across the universe.

Cartoon Network, Harmon, and Roiland need to get their act together as Rick and Morty is a cultural phenomenon with an insane fanbase. Just look at the McDonald’s riots of 2017. If you wait too long, the cultural phenomenon will pass you by. Harmon could want more money, Cartoon Network could just be lazy, but an adult needs to step in and clean this mess up. Enter HBO, there is a TV streaming war going on right now, and HBO is losing ground. HBO’s cash-cow Game of Thrones is ending, Vinyl was a costly flop, Bill Simmons just stole HBO’s money, and season two destroyed True Detective. Also, anyone who thinks Westworld will be as popular as Game of Thrones is delusional.

HBO RICK and MOrty

If HBO wants to be a real player in the streaming world and compete with Netflix, Hulu, and Disney it needs to create content and or buy content. Rick and Morty on HBO would be insane and would be a social media explosion. It would take the show from ‘must-see’ to event status. If Rick and Morty pushed the ratings envelop on HBO it would become must-watch for every kid in high school. Parents would protest the show, and the hype-train would be full speed ahead as long as Harmon and Roiland could keep the writing up to par and maintain the critical acclaim. If the Duplass Brothers can bring Animals to HBO, Harmon and Roiland should no problem with Rick and Morty. Casey Bloys, the President of Programming at HBO needs to understand that Rick and Morty is what the network needs, not Vice Principals.

Rick and Morty could become a disruptive artistic force on HBO, and that’s why the premium cable network needs to do whatever it takes to pick up the show. On the other hand, this could be one elaborate April Fools joke by Cartoon Network, Harmon, and Roiland.

Try to read the lyrics to the show without singing them.

It’s a beautiful day in this neighborhood,
A beautiful day for a neighbor,
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?

It’s a neighborly day in this beautywood,
A neighborly day for a beauty,
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?

I have always wanted to have a neighbor just like you,
I’ve always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you.

So let’s make the most of this beautiful day,
Since we’re together, we might as well say,
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?
Won’t you be my neighbor?

Won’t you please,
Won’t you please,
Please, won’t you be my neighbor?

Advanced Review: THE DEAD HAND #1 (Spoiler-Free)

Monkeys Fighting Robots

As a sucker for spy thrillers, it’s not easy to admit that good spy fiction is hard to find. Intelligent spy fiction is even harder. That this book provides both is what makes The Dead Hand such a joy, albeit not a surprise. Spanning from the end of the Cold War to the present day, The Dead Hand tells the tale of Carter Carlson, a black-ops agent who while infiltrating a Soviet Base discovers a secret that would change his life and the world as a whole. You may think you’ve heard this story before, but you’ve not seen what happens if you let Kyle Higgins, Stephen Mooney, Jordie Bellaire, and Clayton Cowles loose with the concept. When you consider the caliber of the creative team and their collective bodies of work, how it could be anything other than excellent.

What can be said of writer, Kyle Higgins, that hasn’t been said before on this site and elsewhere? He excels at intimate character studies, and The Dead Hand is no different. In Carter Carlson, he paints the picture of a man whose head is filled with the comic book ideals of the 1960s only to discover that life doesn’t adhere to the same strict moral code. A solider who models himself after idols, but is painfully aware of his shortcomings. Through a number of montage sequences Higgins allows his collaborators to have some fun and stretch their artistic muscles, while introducing us to the dirtier element of espionage that Carlson has become accustomed. Higgins uses third-person narration as the driving force behind the story, something that has fallen out of fashion of late, but acts a wonderful vehicle for informing us about our central character. In many ways, it speaks to the detached manner in which Carlson carries himself, that a career such as his requires. It also pays tribute to the spy literary tradition of yesteryear and adds a welcome twist of pulp to this delicious cocktail of genres and styles. Yet even with all we learn about Carlson in this issue, he remains a mystery to us and is all the more interesting for it. To say any more would be to risk spoiling a story that really must be experienced with fresh eyes.

Artist Stephen Mooney is no stranger to the world of espionage from his previous work on Half Past Danger and Grayson. There is a harder edge to Mooney’s linework than usual that speaks more to the latter’s sensibilities than the former’s, but it is nonetheless an example of master craftsmanship. Each page and panel is filled with engrossing artwork that displays an extensive literacy in the genre. Mooney has cut loose once more in displaying an incredible dynamism in his panel composition and action scenes. The Metal Gear Solid influences make for some stunning character designs that are a cosplayer’s dream. Carter Carlson’s design in particular is lovingly showcased across a number of splash pages that tell us as much about him than anything else. It’s all this and the choice use of negative space that secures his position as one of the finest visual storytellers in the business today.

The ever-busy Jordie Bellaire continues to use her colours in increasingly imaginative ways, presenting a stark difference in tone between time-periods. In doing so, she manages to successfully transport us back and forth in time with ease. Subtle reds and blues permeate our exploration of the twilight days of the Cold War, while bright yellows guide us through the wholesome town of Mountain View in the present day. Clayton Cowles’ lettering is on-point, but that shouldn’t shock anyone. What’s impressive is the way his caption boxes emulate the feel of a military report. It really helps to cement our protagonist’s background and mentality in our collective psyche.

The John le Carré comparisons are sure to be numerous, but they are warranted. Not as a jab, but a mark of quality. The Dead Hand owes much to that tradition of spy fiction that dares to present the ugliness of espionage and critique the politics at its core in more than a superficial way. Crucially, however, the book is not bound by that tradition and succeeds in integrating the more fantastical Metal Gear Solid branch of the spy fiction. The house that Kojima built never shied away from social commentary either, but the juxtaposition between the two approaches allows for those grittier moments to hit harder. This is a book that is happy to offer a surface level adventure, but delights in snapping the readership out of their complacency. The Dead Hand is not only capable of being read multiple times, on different levels, but demands it.

The political climate The Dead Hand finds itself in is one consumed by the legacy of the Cold War. There is arguably no better time for this story to be told. This book is packed with the all-star alumni of the Bat-Office, each bringing some of the best work of their career. This is a book you are going to want to know as little about as possible going into it. So let yourself get caught in The Dead Hand’s grip, you won’t regret it.

Epic Games Talks FORTNITE BATTLE ROYALE And Its Move To Mobile

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Last week Epic Games announced its smash hit game Fortnite Battle Royale was going mobile.  The move also came with an invite event allowing people to sign up to play Fortnite on their mobile devices.  This includes both Android and iOS.  With the event still ongoing, I sat down with an Epic Games representative to discuss the game’s new home and its appeal.

Monday brought the launch of the invitation event for people who want to sign up to play Fortnite Battle Royale on their iOS and Android devices.  Explain the pilot program, its creation, and when those who sign up can expect to go mobile with the game.

Epic Games: Right, so with our initial of Fortnite Battle Royale on mobile devices, we need to control the rate at which players enter the game so our servers don’t break.  We want to also tune the game in response to feedback before opening it widely.

Our plan is to start letting folks in based on a number of factors — date they signed up, the device type they own, proximity to our data centers, among other things.  Everyone who gets in will also get some friend invites, so they can share with their buddies and grow the mobile player base a bit slower than just us opening up the gates.

We do intend to get around to everyone who signed up, so we appreciate the patience!  We sent out our first wave on invites the Wednesday after sign-ups, and not long after that, sent out a fair number more.  So everyone who signed up should keep an eye on their inbox, or find a friend who got in and ask them for an invite!

Fortnite

Outside of its massive market size, what do you find most appealing about the mobile gaming market?

Epic Games: It’s really about bringing the game to more people, giving them more ways to play, and making it easier to play with friends.  We think that there’s no reason mobile games can’t be the same experiences you have on consoles or PC, so with Fortnite Battle Royale, what you get on other platforms is exactly what you get on the go.  That means it’ll see the same updates, too.  We believe this is the future of games.  The same game on all platforms, with console-quality graphics and action, where players can play when they want and where they want.

Fortnite

It was also reported that cross-platform gaming between Playstation 4 and Xbox One won’t be happening just yet despite many gamers clamoring for it.  Let’s say it does happen. What kind of opportunities could you see it present for developers and the industry as a whole?

Epic Games: Fortnite Battle Royale is inherently a social game and it’s so much fun with friends. Bringing players together, no matter where they are or where they choose to play, is really important to us. Right now, we’re really excited to allow crossplay between Xbox One, PC, and mobile and PlayStation 4, PC, and mobile. We think it’s an important, exciting step… we hope players agree!

When it comes to milestones, Fortnite has achieved some big ones.  In February, the game surpassed 3.4 million concurrent players, and Forbes reported close to 40 million people are playing the game.  To receive your invite to play Fortnite Battle Royale on your mobile device, click here!

Ava DuVernay Set To Direct NEW GODS Film For Warner Brothers

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The ever-expanding planned DCU has added yet another film to its slate. According to DeadlineA Wrinkle in Time director Ava DuVernay is set to direct The New Gods for Warner Brothers. Kario Salem will pen the script and work closely with DuVernay on the project.

The talented director has been playing close to the vest with this announcement. During the press tour for A Wrinkle in Time DuVernay was asked multiple times about her interest in directing a comic book movie, to which she always seemed uninterested. That appears to be because they were waiting for the buzz around her newest film to die down before announcing.

If you’re unfamiliar with New Gods, Jack Kirby created the world in 1971 following his exit from Marvel. Their comic history follows the ancient battle between New Genesis and Apokolips, the homeworld of Darkseid. We have seen glimpses of Apokolips and the story in the DCU already. Steppenwolf, the villain of last years Justice League, is the uncle of Darkseid.

It’s unclear if DuVernay’s film will take from what Zack Synder has already set up in BvS and Justice League, but with the current status of the DCU, I would hedge my bets on not.

What are your thoughts on DuVernay directing a live-action New Gods movie? Let us know in the comments below!

A Winkle in Time: Meg Murry and her little brother, Charles Wallace, have been without their scientist father, Mr. Murry, for five years, ever since he discovered a new planet and used the concept known as a tesseract to travel there. Joined by Meg’s classmate Calvin O’Keefe and guided by the three mysterious astral travelers known as Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which, the children brave a dangerous journey to a planet that possesses all of the evil in the universe.
