Among the hoopla of San Diego Comic-Con came one the most highly anticipated events of the weekend. Hundreds of eager fans packed into Hall H as Conan O’Brien introduced the Cast of Mockingjay Part 2. There was a tinge of sadness for the fans as this was going to be the last #SDCC to promote Hunger Games for Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth , and Josh Hutcherson. Some of the bigger moments of the event where when Liam and Jennifer were asked what they did on the last day of filming .
Of course they released a brand new teaser trailer
Overall, The SDCC Mockingjay panel was a smashing success and only intensified the desire of fans worldwide to see the final installment of the Hunger Games series this November.
The trailer is intriguing to say the least. And, as noted in the trailer, the cast for Rock The Kasbah is expansive and impressive to say the least. Barry Levinson directs from a screenplay by Scrooged scribe Mitch Glazer, and who knows if it’s any good.
DC Entertainment began Comic-Con International: San Diego 2015 with a blockbuster announcement, revealing today that artists Andy Kubert and Klaus Janson will be joining living-legend Batman writer and artist Frank Miller and acclaimed writer Brian Azzarello in bringing the final chapter of the celebrated THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS saga to life.
“THE DARK KNIGHT III: THE MASTER RACE” is the epic conclusion to Miller’s 1986 classic THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS trilogy – heralded by TIME Magazine as one of the 10 greatest graphic novels of all time – and its 2001-2002 follow-up series BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT STRIKES AGAIN.
THE DARK KNIGHT III: THE MASTER RACE will be an eight-issue, comic book periodical, to be published monthly under the DC Comics imprint. Within each 32 page periodical there will be a special 16 page “Dark Knight Universe” comic affixed in the center. Each “Dark Knight Universe” comic will feature a rotating cast of special guest artists and characters.
“We went into this knowing that we had to give fans more,” said Dan DiDio and Jim Lee, Co-Publishers for DC Entertainment. “We’re pulling out all the stops to deliver an amazing conclusion to this exciting body of work. We hope it inspires the next generation of writers and artists, the way it has already inspired us.”
According to Kubert, “Frank Miller and Brian Azzarello have crafted such an incredible story for DKIII, as I am truly honored to be associated with them, this project, and Klaus Janson. We, along with the fans, are in for a great ride!”
“Any opportunity to work with Frank Miller is a happy occasion for me,” said Janson. “When we add the talents of Brian Azzarello and Andy Kubert to the mix, we have the ingredients to achieve something truly memorable. This will be amazing!”
Marking the 30th anniversary of THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS original series, this periodical is slated for publication beginning in late Fall 2015.
While in New York filming the Ghostbusters reboot, it appears that Kristen Wig is the victim of a timeless joke as Kate McKinnon will not stop long enough to let her in Ecto-1.
There is also an Instagram post from nerdtastic_girl of Ecto-2, which looks way cooler than the new Ecto-1.
The new Ghostbusters is written by Feig and Katie Dippold; and stars Melissa McCarthy, Chris Hemsworth, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Cecily Strong, and Leslie Jones.
The plot is still unknown but they’re probably going to bust some ghosts.
Christine Everhart the WHiH news reporter from Iron Man, Iron Man 2, and Captain America: Civil War; during her July 7th broadcast highlighting the court case and the early release of Scott Lang from prison on July 17th, she foreshadows Civil War.
Everhart mentions a panel discussion and United Nations representatives from Sokovia. She also mentions more government control and transparency when it comes to super powered citizens.
The build up to Captain America: Civil War is in full swing
Marvel’s Ant-Man will be in theaters on July 17, 2015.
Captain America: Civil War will be in theaters on May 6, 2016.
Before we begin, it’s worth clarifying a few things regarding my history with the character of Archie Andrews. Suffice to say, as shocking as it may be to say, I have no real history with Archie, the Riverdale gang or the myriad of comics they have starred in over the years. The only comics baring the Archie label that I have ever read have been their Sonic, Mega-Man and TMNT series. My exposure to the character is limited to the occasional episode of Archie’s Weird Mysteries (which could form the basis of an article itself) and the song, “Sugar, Sugar” as performed by the fictional tie-in band; the Archies. What must be understood is that Archie’s popularity was mostly confined to America. This should come as no surprise given that the main appeal of the characters, from my understanding, is mainly nostalgia driven much like Happy Days. Archie was a call-back to a certain time within the American consciousness to which those of us outside of the states have little reference. That is not to say that I do not have respect for the character or his legacy, quite the contrary. For what amounts to a romantic-comedy to remain in circulation for over 70 years, is to tap into an element of the pop cultural psyche which few properties can access. If the point of this new Archie reboot is to revitalise the franchise and engage new readers then I think it’s fair to say that I am its key demographic. As such, I have not attempted to read up or watch any Archie properties to familiarise myself with the characters or their personalities. If the comic can’t convince me that these characters have merit independent of their cultural significance then it will have failed in its goals.
Released in the celebration of 75 years of publication, Archie #1 is penned by legendary writer; Mark Waid (Kingdom Come, Daredevil) and illustrated by the fantastic Fiona Staples (Saga, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents). More so than anything else, it was this all-star creative team which convinced me that Archie was going to be a book worth investing my time in. When Mark Waid comes knocking at your door, you at least invite him in for a tea because even if he’s trying to sell you cable the conversation is bound to be interesting.
This is unapologetically an origin issue, introducing us to our cast and setting the stage for the issues to come. Archie Andrews is popular young man, whose talent for music and loyalty make him the high school buddy you wish you had. Having recently split-up with his childhood sweetheart;Betty, over the mysterious lipstick incident, Archie attempts to get his grove back as the entire school speculates about the nature of the their break up. Along the way, we are introduced to a number of supporting characters including the meddlesome gossip; Kevin, the local Fonzie impersonator; Reggie and the somewhat misanthropic best friend; Jughead. Jughead is interesting given that most of the characters see him as nothing more than a dumb glutton who can be bribed with food and indeed, from what little I knew of Jughead this was my impression also. Instead, he turns out to be the most sensible of Archie’s friends group and the most understanding with regards to his friend’s situation. He is an almost cynical character, who knows how best to achieve his desired aims. If this is the version of Jughead that Chip Zdarsky is working on then sign me up, though why he wears a paper hat is still beyond me. While the glamorous Veronica remains absent, her presence is hinted at throughout the piece. It’s you standard high school comedy-drama, but its’ the genre at its finest. There isn’t much story in this premiere outing, but the characters are funny and charming enough to carry the issue regardless.
From time to time, Archie breaks the fourth wall and addresses the audience via soliloquy. It is in these moments that the humour is put to one-side, as Archie’s happy-go-lucky personality is stripped back to discuss his relationship with his father and his history with Betty. While there is a whiff of “Boy Meets World” and “Saved by the Bell” off these interludes, that is not necessarily a bad thing for this inaugural issue and they assist us in empathizing with Archie.
It’s worth addressing some of the controversy leading up to this issue. Naturally, there was some fan backlash to the radical redesigns of all the core characters. Gone is the cartoonish Filmation artwork of the past, replaced with a modern-style akin to the works of Chip Zdarsky. I find the artwork endearing and relatable in a way that the prior style could only aspire to. When these characters emote, it comes from the faces of humans, not cartoons. Through subtle body language Staples expertly conveys unspoken emotional moments. Any scene which highlights Betty and Archie would not have impacted the reader as much in the old house style. It is understandable that fans would be upset given that the classic Archie style has endured the test of time, but I’m not sure it belongs in the modern comic landscape where character is king. I’m not sure the story would have as much impact in the former style, I won’t begrudge anyone their taste in artwork, but I don’t think I could have taken the book seriously nor would it have been as effective. For those of you waiting anxiously to pounce at me in the comment section, all I have to say is this…come at me.
The more interesting controversy was the Kickstarter campaign. The publisher attempted to use the crowd-funding platform to push ahead the production schedule on the other books being released as part of the wider Archie universe reboot. The hope was to raise $350,000 to support the new “Jughead”, “Life with Kevin” and “Betty and Veronica” titles. It’s understandable why a smaller publisher like Archie would want some indication of fan-support for such titles, but it is questionable whether a company which has being publishing comics for nearly 75 years is an appropriate candidate for Kickstarter. It’s clear they were chancing their arm, particularly evident given the ludicrous reward goals that were in place, and failed to appreciate the nature of the platform they engaged in. On the basis of this issue, I am still looking forward to the titles involved in the Kickstarter, but the incident is systematic of a growing abuse of the crowd-funding model (Shenmue 3, I’m looking at you).
Archie #1 is how a reboot should be done. It updates and gives modern relevance to a character who many will have written off. The energy, humour and character at the heart of this series demonstrates why the Riverdale crew have stayed with us for three-quarters of a century. If you are looking for something funny, with a lot of heart, excellent art and an interesting cast of characters, then you would be well-advised to pick this one up. Archie #1 is your favourite sitcom, it’s funny on the surface, but also has layered characters throughout. I, for one, am sold, welcome to Riverdale.
The Flash season 2 will be returning October 6, but many fans of the CW/DC Comics scarlet speedster are having a hard time waiting for the next season. This makes sense, since The Flash ended with a massive cliff hanger that many have been dying to climb and find out just where it is going. Comicbook reports that DC Comics Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns just dropped a hint or the flash’s fans who are starved for any kind of information on what to expect in season 2.
“There are a lot of new characters coming in, not just the ones that have been leaked online. And they all will challenge relationships, in good and bad ways.”
It is likely that at least some of the flash’s new characters will include Vibe and Killer Frost, who the Flash fans currently know as Caitlin Snow and Cisco Ramon. The Inquisitr reported on these confirmations in May.
Producer Andrew Kreisberg seemingly just confirmed that the Reverse-Flash will return. In an interview with KpopStarz, Kreisberg again confirmed that Tom Cavanaugh will return, but claimed he would not say anymore, until he did say more.
“What’s wonderful about it is now it allows us to have two tremendously talented actors both playing the same villain. When the Reverse Flash returns, the face that’s underneath the hood can be one of two faces now.”
The Flash season 2 might also be seeing a Smallville character popping up on the show as well. According to Latino Review, Superman actor Tom Welling might be showing up in his red and blue tights on the flash’s second season. Which most fans might see as odd because the Flash, thus far, will not be crossing over with CBS’s Supergirl.
Also, the fact that someone different played the Flash on Smallville, and someone different in playing Superman in the DC cinematic universe. Lest we forget, as Monkeys Fighting Robots previously reported, that a new big bad is on its way.
The Flash producer Andrew Kreisberg also just tweeted yesterday that the second season filming is underway, Comicbook also reports, so fans have an awful lot to gnaw on for the next few months. Not to mention, it is still four months away.
What are you most excited about for the Flash season 2, and which piece of news is least likely to come true?
It’s finally here! The show that will probably make your parents lower their heads thinking they have failed as parents. Now while that may be a little more true than I’d like to admit, I think Monster Musume will be a hell of a ride regardless. I for one had a great time with the first episode and will probably enjoy most of what this show has to offer.
Now I didn’t really expect Miia (the lamia girl) to be so forward with her feelings right out of the gate. But she just really wants to get on that. I mean really bad. Its sort of nice to see a girl who is unashamed about her sexual desires. It sort of makes the show feel less voyeuristic, which is always a good thing. No one wants to feel dirty when they watch something like this… well at least I don’t. When I’m watching this show I want to have as much fun as possible and not have to worry about a girl feeling victimized or uncomfortable to the advances of creepy guys. So as of now I’m rooting for Miia and hopes she can get hers before the series ends. But in all likelihood nothing will happen.
But it’s not our main characters fault that he won’t have sex with this able and willing monster girl. That can be attributed to the giant cockblockers referred to as the Interspecies Exchange Security Squad. They’re there to ensure the purity of monster girl representatives. And there are dire consequences if our main male Kimihito gives into his desires and has sex with Miia.
Like I said in the title this show is completely unapologetic and strives to make you have a good time while watching sexy monster girls trying to get laid. Whether it’s how Lamia’s are cold-blooded and have a rough start waking up, or how they use the bathroom. This show adds some nice world building into this newly monster inhabited world to make it feel fun and interesting.
Now given that Miia is a lamia and has an eight foot snake bottom, she tends to stick out more than other monster girls who just have some cute ears and a tail. This can be shocking to normal humans and she gets her fair share of ridicule and embarrassment. If it wasn’t for Kimihito stepping in, who knows what she might do if provoked.
But Kimihito isn’t a typical milk toast anime pussy. He’ll step in for the people he cares about and isn’t afraid of getting his own hands dirty. Plus I guess he’s super strong or something… Must be all that jacking off since he does because he can’t fuck Miia.
Like I said before Monster Musume knows what it is and tries its hardest to make sure the viewer has a fun time watching it. The art is good and so is the animation. Which is unusual considering the type of show. Sure it’s not going to win any literary awards, but it sure is fun to watch. I don’t care about what other people say, I’m going to have all the fun I can with this show! My only fear is that the show falls into a harem scenario once the rest of the monster girls show up. But after seeing this first episode I’m sure the show runners will handle it well.
Kevin Sorbo was Hercules way before The Rock started his acting career. As Hercules: The Legendary Journeys was one of the highest rated television shows in syndicated history, Sorbo thought he deserved a cameo in the 2014 Dwayne Johnson film, Hercules. Sorbo’s camp had approached Johnson for a cameo in the film and they were turned away
We talked to Sorbo about his latest film Hope Bridge and as the conversation lead into Hercules, he voiced his opinion on The Rock and the film.
