The Best Superhero One-Shot Comic Books of All Time

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Some of the greatest superhero stories ever told in comic books have occurred within one-shot issues. Many of these single issues deviate from the norm of their respective series and portray our favourite heroes at their most human. This is a list that told powerful and important stories for their respective characters.

The Incredible Hulk #420 – Lest Darkness Come

The Incredible Hulk #420 – Lest Darkness Come
In this issue the Hulk has to face a real world horror when his former sidekick, Jim Wilson, contracts HIV. Jim Wilson pleads with the Hulk to give him some of his blood in order to save his life, however Hulk refuses as he does not want Jim to turn into a Hulk-like creature. The levels of fear of HIV/AIDS was still high in 1994 when this issue was published and to show the immensely powerful Hulk struggling with a real world issue many readers may have faced as well took this issue to new heights and showed the Hulk character at his most human.

Daredevil

Daredevil #191Roulette
Daredevil visits a now paralysed Bullseye in hospital, he can no longer move or even talk, but must lie there and endure round after round of Russian Roulette. As the story reaches the final round it is revealed that Matt Murdock is who he is and despite his deep hatred for Bullseye there is only one way their story can end, with an empty gun. Miller builds almost impossible tension as he takes the reader right to the edge of belief that The Man Without Fear is about to take a life. This was the issue that marked the end of Frank Miller’s first run on Daredevil. Miller culminated his series with the darkest superhero tale to date (Daredevil #191 pre-dates The Dark Knight Returns and Batman: Year One).

Spider-Man

Amazing Spider-Man #248 – The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man
After Spider-Man himself reads a newspaper article about a young fan who is dying of Leukaemia, he decides to pay him a visit. What unfolds is one of the most touching and sad moments in all of Spider-Man’s many issues. The pair bond and Spider-Man shares some of his stories including how his negligence caused the death of his Uncle Ben, a touching scene that causes the young boy to comfort his hero. This one-shot is a great example of why Spider-Man is still a fan favourite to this day.

superman

Superman Annual #11 – For The Man Who Has Everything
Created by the famous Watchmen duo of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, For The Man Who Has Everything is one of Superman’s most famous one-shot stories. Batman, Robin and Wonder Woman arrive at the Fortress of Solitude to celebrate Superman’s birthday only to discover him in catatonic state. He has succumbed to an alien plant known as Black Mercy in a plot by the super-villain, Mongul. The Black Mercy will show Superman a realistic dream of his ‘heart’s desire’. While the heroes battle Mongul, Superman must cope with his dream of living a full life on Krypton with a wife a son, as he begins to wake up he must face the challenge to give up what he believes is real and say goodbye to his family. An incredibly powerful Superman one-shot that provided the best look into the character’s psyche since his inception in 1938.

Batman: The Killing Joke

Batman – The Killing Joke
The Killing Joke is the single most famous and important Batman/Joker one-shot. The story became infamous for telling the origin of the Joker; a family man and failed comedian who suffered ‘one bad day’ that finally drove him insane. After escaping from Arkham Asylum Joker begins a rampage of crime including paralysing Batgirl and kidnapping Commissioner Gordon. The issue culminates in a stand off between Joker and Batman at an abandoned Gotham theme park. This famous tale portrays the Joker at his most vicious and violent but the legacy of the comic stems from the debate of whether Batman, did or did not kill the Joker at the end after he tells him ‘The Killing Joke’. Created by Alan Moore, The Killing Joke is single handedly the most horrifying Batman one-shot that continues to inspire and challenge comic book creators today.

Top 10 Reasons Top 10 Lists Are Stupid And Pointless

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Yeah so I know this doesn’t have to do specifically with anime, but whatever its relevant to almost every kind of entertainment that there has ever been or will be. If you’ve been on the internet for more than a minute, its safe to say you’ve seen your fair share of top 10 lists. So let me ask you this rhetorical question. Have you ever really agreed with any of them? I’m talking 30% or more. I know most of the top 10 lists I walk away from always end the same way, me rolling my eyes and thinking the other person is dumb or something. Maybe you’ve had this same reaction and are sick and tired of these top 10 lists that plague the internet as easy click-bait (maybe I’m a hypocrite here because of my title). Yes the title is misleading because this will not be a top 10 list. No this subject doesn’t really matter, and yes this is basically a rant. And to clear something up, I honestly think a stupid rant like this has more merit than a top 10 list. Rants may be another scourge of the internet but lets deal with this first.

To clarify this up in case it was a little vague in the opening paragraph, I don’t have a problem with the idea of a top 10 list. As an avid fan of things and stuff I have plenty of top 10 lists. What I don’t like is forums/websites/youtube channels whose main source of content is throwing together a top 10 list for every stupid thing under the sun. Theres a specific youtube channel you all know so I won’t have to say it, its watchmojo.com. Oops, couldn’t help myself. These are the types of top 10 lists I loathe and since I’m already 300 words into this thing I better start telling you why.

Like I said before I have my fair share of top 10 lists, who doesn’t? However, just because I have all these lists, doesn’t necessarily mean that they are worth sharing. “Logan what do you mean by that?” Well while I may have a list of certain top things there are only a few subject matters that I feel like are worth me sharing with other people (especially people who don’t really know me). For example, I know little to nothing about cars, so it would be pretty pointless if I posted a list of top 10 cars having to do with whatever. The most I could get away with is aesthetic, but if I did that the list wouldn’t really have any purpose. Its just a matter of wanting people ranking things to be a little informed about what they’re talking about.

Now there are times where you feel like you know someone online and want to get there opinion on things (and attempt to validate your own). Thats probably the biggest thing wrong with having all these top 10 lists. There really isn’t being any worth to them if you have it laid out that way, is there? Sure I find myself looking to be validated by someone else opinion every once and a while, but it shouldn’t really be encouraged (when talking about entertainment of course). So we look to, most of the times, random columnists (like myself) or faceless youtubers and look at what they think is the best in certain fields that are 99% pointless.

To make this easier to understand (Im doing a really bad job at that) Ill give an example of a pointless top 10 list and then a good top 10 list. A bad top 10 list would be something like Top 10 anime battles. I even put a link so you could watch and see what I’m getting at (and oh look its that one channel that I talked about earlier). Lists like these are as shallow as they come. They’re just there for that justification and validation purpose and thats it. Most of the top 10 lists are set up like this, people talking about things they know little about and thus can’t really bring anything to the conversation at hand. This potentially could be good if it were more informed and gave me something to chew on. Thats not the case though, every list is accompanied by a half-assed explanation and a fanboy pen bleeding through the video.

Now here’s an example of a good top 10 list, Top 10 Fullmetal Alchemist Theme Songs. So whats done right here as opposed to the other is that this clearly has more though put into it. There’s some real research to tie more things to think about into the subject at hand. It gives reasoning not only why its on the list but why it might resonate with people, why its unique compared to other things. The difference is that I learn something from this video as opposed to the former.

If you’ve read any of my articles you know I like to get as much out of my entertainment as possible. I’m just that greedy. So when I waste my time on something that really didn’t do anything, and even made me kind of mad that I watched it, it stays on my mind. Not too long or anything, I’m not crazy. most top 10 lists are bad right now and thats not necessarily because of the lists themselves, Its about whose making them. Whether they intend to actually share an educated opinion or just make some click-bait.

10 Historical Characters DC’s ‘Legends of Tomorrow’ Should Meet

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The CW announced in January, Legends of Tomorrow will eventually run into the DC Universe’s anti-hero cowboy Jonah Hex, which means it won’t be long before the team runs into more history-based characters.

Looking through DC’s vast mythology, there are many characters from different time-periods who would be perfect for the team to encounter on their journey through the ages.

1. Robin Hood

robin-hood

The prince of thieves has made many appearances over the years in DC comics. Often teaming up with and giving pointers to Green Arrow. Running into him would be entertaining enough but if Green Arrow’s actor Stephen Amell played him on a guest appearance it would be hilarious. The Atom and White Canary could keep making the joke “Doesn’t he remind you of someone?” the entire episode.

2. Ra’s Al Ghul

raz al ghul

Arrow already introduced and defeated this long time leader of the League of Assassins, but since he was granted a long life by the Lazarus pit, it would be easy to imagine the team meeting up with him sometime in the past. Maybe even before he becomes a killer and White Canary wonders the entire episode, “Should we kill him and prevent him from killing others?”

3. Sherlock Holmes

Batman-The-Brave-and-the-Bold

One of the greatest detectives of all time has made several appearances in the DC universe over the years. He’s run into many different characters including Batman and would take the team on a very interest mystery. The only problem is there is no Batman-like character on the team for him to play off.

4. Sergeant Rock

SGTRK_MF

The original comic book (non-superhuman) soldier who debuted before both Nick Fury and G.I. Joe. The team gets stuck while chasing Victor Savage during World War II and run into the good Sergeant. The story would get even more interesting if he found a way to steal some of the equipment from the Waverider and try to use it to stop the Nazis, causing the team to have to stop him or risk altering the timeline.

5. Merlin

merlin

The wizard known for aiding King Arthur and his knights could easily appear if the team made a trip to Camelot. Also, thanks to his ties to the character, meeting Merlin could explain him popping up in either Flash or Arrow and lead into the introduction of Captain Marvel into the DC TV universe. His appearance could also introduce…

6. Etrigan the Demon

etrigan

Merlin’s half brother who was bonded with the knight Jason Blood would be a perfect addition along with Merlin. His mythical origins would make him perfect to battle with Hawkgirl. Then thanks to his immortality, he later appears in an episode of Flash or Arrow down the line.

7. Wonder Woman

wonder-woman

With news of Wonder Woman’s movie taking place during World War II as a pilot crashes onto her island home of Themyscrica, having an earlier introduction with a TV episode wouldn’t be half bad an idea. It would finally tie the movie universe into the TV ones. The major issue is Warner Bros. plans to keep the Cinematic Universe separate from the TV Universe. Oh well, still a good idea.

8. Kamandi the last Human

kamandi

The last human alive after a great disaster which results in a future where the world is run by highly intelligent anthropomorphic animals could easily appear on the show. Given the fact the team already has to fix a mistake which could have resulted in a terrible future in just the Pilot, a mishap resulting in meeting Kamandi isn’t so unthinkable. The team would be faced with the conundrum of fixing the future and not wiping out Kamandi in the process.

9. Booster Gold

booster gold

The hero who does it all for fame and fortune would easily be able to make an appearance if the team takes a small trip into the future. If he did appear maybe Nathan Fillion can be called into to play him. The actor already said he would do it so why not give him a shot to portray the character on TV before giving him a full movie.

10. The Legion of Super Heroes

legion

The superhero team from a distant future spotting an insanely high roster could easily make an appearance in the show. They could even show up in an effort to stop the team from continuing in their adventures because it’s affecting the future the Legion comes from. Complications would come from narrowing down which of the team’s long list of members would be able to show up.

Which of these characters would you like to make an appearance on this DC’s Legends of Tomorrow? Write a comment about it below.

Protecting Your Comics – A “How To” for New Collectors

Monkeys Fighting Robots

It’s no myth that collecting comics can become incredibly profitable. CAN being the operative word. Every collector, speculator, or social reader understands the value of protecting your comics and your potential.

Every local comic retailer will have different suggestions, different preferences, especially with bags and boards. From MyLites to ComiCare, it’s easy to get lost in the name-mix. But, from this retailer’s perspective, the options are far more specific.

The first question you want to ask yourself is, what size: Silver Age or Current (also known as New)? Almost every period in comics have their own specific size of bags and boards. But Silver and Current are more common for the books now released. Silver Age bags are a little wider, which can hold some of the specialty “extra-sized” comics. The additional room can allow for less edge bending but it may also permit extra movemProtecting Your Comics - SilverAge ProBagsent when traveling.

Current Sized bags and boards are specifically sized for the current market. Though they can get a little tight with larger issues (usually anything above 48-55 page counts, depending on the publication company) and can cause slight creasing on the edges. But, once again, these bags and boards are made for the issues currently on the racks and are thus the most common types of supplies found in local comic shops.

Personally, I choose Silver Age. I choose Silver Age. Though the books have a tendency to slide, larger books fit more comfortably. I read A LOT of Independent Publisher titles which, especially at the beginning and ending of arcs, can be larger issues. Even more importantly, the paper. Though the “Big 2″ have thinner paper, Independents tend to have thicker stock and Silver Age accommodates those books best. But, as always, this is by preference. Protecting your comics is completely up to you.

Comic Defense System (CDS) bags are the most durable and suggested on the market. The polypropylene ProBags take travel well, are the best bags if you prefer folding in the edge instead of taping and are 2.4-mil in thickness versus the more standard ComiCare or BCW bags which are only 2.0.

Note: On the brief topic of “taping”. Though a resealable adhesive bag (most popularly found on BCW Bags) can be time saving, the cost of the bags themselves are usually much higher and the life expectancy is much shorter. Most polypropylene bags should be replaced, approximately, every 10 years but, as long as they are properly store, can survive up to 15. Bags with the adhesive need a more stable environment and should be replaced more in the 5 – 10 range, even if they are polypropylene.

I DO NOT ever suggest polyethylene. These bags have a tendency to be cheaper but they only last about 5 years. They are prone to discolor and shrink. And, even worse, when they begin to break apart or can become gooey and sticky, which can be detrimental to your comics. Though they have a life expectancy of up to 5 years, if you do decide to try polyethylene, it would be safer to replace them every 3 years.

Does your local comic shop not carry CDS? No problem! Though CDS is, personally, the best in the market, ComiCare product comes in at a very close second. And there is little to no difference in price.

I would like Protecting Your Comics - MyLites2to take a second to talk MyLites… Though they are not usually suggested for introductory collectors, there is something to say on spending the extra cash. Their specialty plastic is meant for permanent storage. They are resistant to discoloring, aging and decomposition. But, they are far more brittle and, if you are the type who moves their books from place to place, these bags could tear and thus are not for you. But, if you want to become the type of collector that reads once and then stores your books in a temperature controlled storage unit* for the remainder of your life (and possibly those of your children), ask your local retailer to order MyLites. (Or… If you are already willing to spend the additional dollar, look on Amazon for Mylar Bags.)

*Temperature controlled rooms should be kept between 72-75o Fahrenheit (22-24o Celsius) with Humidity at 50% or less.

On to picking the perfect backer boards for your growing comics collection. Boards are simple! All you have to do is purchase the corresponding Boards to Bags. Want Current bags? Buy Current boards! Easy as that!

Choosing boxes are almost as easy. CDS boxes are preferable but, at nearly the same cost and almost the same quality, ComiCare boxes are viable options. The bigger concern would be space. Long boxes can usually hold up to 350 Comics, depending on if you use bags and boards, while short boxes hold closer to 200 Issues. Which option is better for you is completely up to personal preference. And storage space!

You have your boards, bags and everything is stored safely in your specific sized boxes. But what if, even as a new collector you have issues you want Graded? To begin, this is not for the faint-of-heart. Grading is for collectors who are looking to protect their best and most important, not valuable, but important issues. Key events, origins and first appearances. But, depending on your issues, the price and time may be worth it.Protecting Your Comics - Spider-Man #1 CGC

Understanding the cost and the grading process itself is pivotal. If you get your book signed (AND it is witnessed by a representative) you could spend $50-60 just to get your book sealed and back within a three month time period. (Yes! You do have to send your book away.) The benefit? You will never, EVER have to have them resealed.

The two best grading companies are Certified Guaranty Company (CGC) or Comic Book Certification Services (CBCS). But! A warning: Please remember that the grade is not going to be what you expected. Even if you go to a retailer and ask them to grade your books, always expect a 0.2 – 0.5 less grade than originally anticipated. All grading companies have their own methods and their own calculations. The grading process is long and time-consuming, but almost always fair. What you get is what you get.

When it come to protecting your comics, and how to begin, know that it all comes down to you. Try a few different products, browse through the supplies options on Previews World or speak with your local comics retailers and get their opinions. Have fun collecting, speculate the potential and, most importantly, enjoy your collection!

Paul Kantner of Jefferson Airplane Fame Dead at 74

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Guitarist Paul Kantner of Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship fame has died at 74.

Kantner face

Mr. Kantner suffered a fatal heart attack this week. It has been confirmed by his longtime friend and publicist Cynthia Bowman that he died of organ failure and septic shock. In recent years Kantner had been plagued with multiple heath issues, including a heart attack in March of 2015.

Paul Kantner is survived by three children: daughter China (with Grace Slick) and sons Gareth and Alexander.

He was born Paul Lorin Kantner on March 17, 1942 in San Francisco, California. His father was a traveling and salesman and when his mother passed away he was sent to military school. Mr. Kantner found solace in science fiction books and music as child. Pete Seeger inspired him to become a folk singer. He attended Santa Clara University and San Jose State University before dropping out to pursue music full-time.

Kantner was a founding member of the 1960s band Jefferson Airplane. The band was formed in 1965 in San Francisco at a bar, Drinking Goured, when Marty Balin and Paul Kantner met and expressed interest in starting a folk-rock band.

The band quickly gained a strong following and was the first band in their ilk to sign a major record contract. They were a pioneer in rock genre psychedelic rock and were the first band out of the San Francisco scene to achieve international success.

Jefferson Airplane was on the bill of the three most notable American rocks festivals of the 1960s – the Monterey Pop Festival (1967), Woodstock (1969), and the Altamont Speedway Free Festival (1969). They were also the first headlines of the Isle of Wright Festival in 1968.

In 1967 Jefferson Airplane released the album, Surrealistic Pillow, and it known as one of the most pivotal recordings in what is now regarded as the “Summer of Love.” Surrealistic Pillow produced two hit songs, Somebody to Love and White Rabbit – these two songs are on the Rolling Stone Magazine’s “500 Greatest Songs of All Time.”

The most familiar line-up of the band was: Marty Balin, Jack Casady, Spencer Dryden, Paul Kantner, Jorma Kaukonen, and Grace Slick. In 1972 Jefferson Airplane disbanded and split into two separate bands – Hot Tuna and Jefferson Starship. Paul Kantner and Jefferson Airplane were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and they also received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in January 2016.

WWE debuts The Phenomenal One and announces The King Of Strong Style

Monkeys Fighting Robots

2016 has kicked off with one big debut and another equally big announcement. This past Sunday night at the Royal Rumble, social media and wrestling fans everywhere were blown away with the debut of “The Phenomenal One” A.J. Styles made his long awaited WWE debut in the Royal Rumble match.

Further breaking of the internet and blowing of minds happened during this week’s NXT show when it was announced that Shinsuke Nakamura, one of the stars of New Japan Pro Wrestling and the “King Of Strong Style” will be making his NXT debut at NXT Takeover: Dallas.

Both are fantastic talents and here’s a deeper look as they begin their WWE careers.

‘The King Of Strong Style’ Shinsuke Nakamura

Professional Debut: 2002

Notable Accomplishments: 3 Time IWGP Heavyweight Champion, 5 Time IWGP Intercontinental Champion, IWGP Tag Team Champion

Signature Moves: Bomaye Knee, Flying Cross Arm Breaker, Strong Style Lariat

Since his professional debut in 2002, Nakamura has been a mainstay in New Japan Pro Wrestling. Quickly gaining adulation from the fans and fellow competitors, he earned the nickname ‘Super Rookie’ and at 23 would be the youngest wrestler to date to win the heavyweight title in Japan. Bringing a unique personality and innovative offense, Nakamura will be joining a dynamic NXT roster that has nothing but upside. His matches with Hiroshi Tanahashi and A.J. Styles are recommended viewing, especially his Wrestle Kingdom 10 match against Styles this past January. Any potential NXT matchups can be looked at as ‘dream matches’ for wrestling fans.

Professional debut: 1998

Notable Accomplishments: 3 Time NWA World Heavyweight Champion, 4 Time NWA World Tag Team Champion, 6 Time TNA X Division Champion, 2 Time IWGP Heavyweight Champion

Signature Moves: Styles Clash, Pele Kick, Spiral Tap

18 years as a professional wrestler, Styles, until recently, was regarded as the best performer who had never been in the WWE. He spent 15 years as one of the franchise talents in TNA/Impact Wrestling, winning every title in the company and becoming it’s first Grand Slam Champion. Unhappy with the direction that TNA was headed in, his surprise departure in 2013 would shake up the professional wrestling world as he would make his way through Ring Of Honor, CHIKARA, and AAA. A.J. would make his debut with NJPW in 2014 as a member of the Bullet Club, New Japan’s biggest ‘bad guy’ stable. He would soon win the IWGP Heavyweight Champion, and is one of six foreign-born wrestlers to claim that title. His arrival in WWE brings the possibility of any number of matchups that will make fans extremely happy, provided A.J. can stay healthy (has had some ankle and back issues in the past), and the WWE makes full use of his potential.

‘Gotham’ Will See Fish Mooney Resurrected

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Remember when Gotham‘s Ben McKenzie hinted at the return of dead characters? Well, more information has come to light on who will be resurrected first.

TVLine has reported that Jada Pinkett Smith has signed on to return as Fish Mooney, an original character from season one. TVLine claims to have confirmation from the studio:

A rep for the Fox drama confirmed Smith’s return but declined to provide details about how the crime boss will resurface.

While the Fox rep didn’t say how Mooney will return, the report does leave a pretty strong hint:

Especially when the folks at Indian Hill are conducting such Strange experiments.

Long time Batman fans will pick up on the Hugo Strange reference. Strange is a long time villain of the Caped Crusader, dating back to 1940. He is one of the few rogues who has been able to deduce the hero’s secret identity as Bruce Wayne.

Comicbook.com had previously reported that actor BD Wong will be playing the mad scientist on the show, starting this season.

Deadpool Announces Presidential Run

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Deadpool announced he’s exploring a run for the President of the United States in the 2016 election.

“Many of you have asked Deadpool to run for President. There’s all sorts of reasons this won’t work. He’s Canadian. He kills people. Pretty sure he’ insane,” a spokesperson for Deadpool said in an email.

The email then continued to expand the positives of Deadpool presidential run.

Takes millions from wealthy ‘donors’ to carry out their dirty work both here and abroad. Probably inhaled. A community dis-organizer. Not afraid of elephants or donkeys. Cats maybe. You want to talk about the issues? ‘Cause Deadpool has tons of them. Deadpool ‘gets’ ‘social’ ‘media.’

“So today, Deadpool is official exploring a run for President. In totally unrelated and uncoordinated news, a SuperPac – which is totally unaffiliated with Mr. Pool – has been formed. The SuperPac is called ‘Weapon X-ers for Progress. Deadpool for El Presidente 2016 might actually happen, you morons,” said a spokesperson for Deadpool.
