Review: ‘Steven Universe’: Steven vs. Amethyst: Fight!

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Steven and Amethyst compete against each other while training with Pearl.

After the humiliation she faced in the previous episode it was obvious Amethyst would have to find a way to recover. This eventually leads her to wanting to prove she is still capable by participating in Pearl’s training sessions with Steven. Unfortunately Steven has become such a proficient warrior he easily blows her away. Good to see his efforts have paid offend he isn’t just a goofball. Amethyst could probably take a lesson from him and start to follow a regular training schedule if she wants to keep in top form. Given how often Jasper keeps showing up lately, this wouldn’t be the worst idea.

This episode really helps to show how much combat skill Steven possesses. His ability to throw his shield and have it come back to him resembles Captain America. Still, even Amethyst makes it a point to mention how Steven has way too much power and he hasn’t been able to master them all. Even during the fight, he finds a way to pull out something new by being able to modify his bubble shield so it has spikes. The kid has enough powers already. He doesn’t need anymore. At least not for the rest of the season.

Steven does shows how frustrated he can become about how is living in his mom’s shadow. Expecting a person to be a great leader when they are still figuring out who they are can be extremely frustrating. This idea should hopefully be looked into deeper in future episodes as it has a lot of potential for drama which should be explored. For now, it looks like the next episode will have another major change to it as a new character is introduced and the series slowly works towards its 100th episode.

Review: How Does ‘Suicide Squad’ Stack Up Against ‘Batman v Superman’?

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The Third Major DCEU Film Was Just Released! How Does Suicide Squad Compare To Its Peers?

Suicide Squad‘ had a very tough task. Not only did they have to entertain audiences but they also had to sway certain viewers back after the polarizing ‘Batman v Superman’. They relied on great marketing filled with catchy pop songs to grab viewers while selling them on the mayhem. Also, anytime you bring The Joker into the mix, he brings a certain diehard fanbase with him.

So how did ‘Suicide Squad‘ combat the massive hype?

By producing a semi-stylized film that’s a bit more accessible than its predecessor.

David Ayer listened to the critics and disgruntled viewers, delivering more fun. While I do feel like the film is easier to get into than ‘Batman v Superman’, it lost some originality that DC was beginning to create for themselves. It may be studio influence or the reshoots not mixing well with the original footage but it felt inauthentic. That’s not to say that ‘Suicide Squad‘ isn’t a good movie. It’s totally a fun ride but traded hyper-realism for a more cartoon-like feel. Others hate the tone Snyder created but I’m in a rare minority that was completely enamored. This feels like it wants to fit in with the rest instead of distancing from the pack.

“It’s taken me some time, but I finally have them. The worst of the worst.”
Amanda Waller

When you get to see the true David Ayer influence though, it feels like magic happening on-screen. The first half of the film was stylistic and adventurous. The editing was visceral; disorienting the viewer or giving fun introductions with neon title cards and bios. Also, there is a plethora of great action sequences.

Sadly, when the mayhem picks up and the last half starts is when the story begins to falter. Then sadly ‘Suicide Squad‘ starts feeling familiar instead of intriguing. A typical superhero third-act villain appears and we dip into a mess of visual effects. This cinema trope has been tired for years and somehow, 2016 seems to be using it more than ever. Like the two films (Man Of Steel + Batman v Superman) before it, the grounded nature of the film is changed in such a dramatic fashion that it almost feels like two different movies.

When the plot began to tank, at least the rock solid characters kept getting the chance to do some outstanding work. Even a character with little recognition like El Diablo was given the chance for a great arc. Viola Davis play Amanda Waller with a calm but vicious personality. There was comic book stars like Deadshot who the film was bascially centered around while the twisted romance of Joker & Harley Quinn played as an fun side story, even if they didn’t spend much screen time together.

A minor complaint has to be the heavy reliance of a pop song filled soundtrack. After the stunning work by Junkie XL and Hans Zimmer in ‘Batman v Superman’, I was hoping to see some more focus on a score. I will say, there was times that songs like Black Skinhead by Kanye West or Without Me by Eminem worked amazingly within their scenes. It just felt overused by the fifth or sixth music video-style scene. For me, hearing a solid film score mixed in with the pop soundtrack would have made it feel less repetitive. Imagine if The Joker could have had some amazing theme song like the one they gave Wonder Woman in ‘BvS‘.

Final Thoughts:

With the reports of reshoots and Warner Bros. playing a part in changing the tone, I believe all of that shows in final product of ‘Suicide Squad‘. It feels like Zack Snyder, the director of ‘Batman v Superman’, was allowed to make something that fits his brand and set the tone of this universe. Suicide Squad’s David Ayer doesn’t seem to have the privilege. Cant knock the feeling he was creating something original but was reigned back in an attempt to appeal to a wider audience. Changes like that can lead to a messier product that doesn’t attract die-hard fans or newcomers.

Probably the worst thing about ‘Suicide Squad‘ is how average it ends up being.

Let me know how you feel about the film in the comments below!

Review ‘Under The Dog’ 00 – Worth The Wait!

Monkeys Fighting Robots

After what seemed like forever I finally got a notification from Kickstarter that I could download the first episode of Under The Dog. If you don’t know what Under The Dog is or why it’s such an important piece of work for the anime industry as a whole then click here, and it should explain some things. As for the plot, well it seems like its going to be akin to something like Ghost in the Shell or Bubblegum Crisis. I’m just spitballing here, but this is my interpretation of things so far. In a near future humanity had placed all their hope in what they call the “light”. This seems to have unfortunately had the adverse effects of turning people into monsters known as “Pandora”. The US military, stationed in Japan of course, are out to find the people who are infected with the light and have potential of becoming Pandora’s. The reason is yet to be clear. However there is also another agency that commands the “Flowers”, young girl assassins who are in search for a human who has a white hue and can overcome turning into a Pandora. The Flowers seem to be imbued with something similar to what the Pandora have. Their goal is to destroy, what was humanity hope, in search of a new one.

So to start I’m going to spoil the shit out of this first episode so forewarning. There are some scenes near the end where the surprise is almost half the fun. Personally I am totally on board with what this show is laying down so far. It breathes life into its world almost immediately and lets a lot of the exposition be deposited by actual events. This made it way easier to explain and made the episode more engaging because I was learning about the world while seeing the plot unfold simultaneously. This took the stakes that I didn’t know existed and built them naturally and is what made the emotion given off at the end of the episode so much weight. Every event gives you more insight on what happened the scene before and ties it all together wonderfully. After almost 20 minutes I was sad when Anthea had to come in and kill Hana. Everything had built up her character so well and it felt like she was coming to some realization, but was cut short. This says a lot about the meaning in “light of humanity” and what kind of scenario our Flowers are hoping to break free from.

Honestly I would have preferred more Anthea, since she was on all the promotional material and took up most of the screen time in the PV, I expected it to start out with her. Never the less I like Hana’s tragic end lead into Anthea’s intro so much that I wouldn’t change it. Everything about Anthea is bad-ass, even the universe itself acknowledges her skill. However the scenario she’s thrust in still feels like a dangerous one. She gets caught by surprise more than once and still manages to struggle through. She draws a good parallel with the supposed theme of, what do you do when your hope has turned against you? Struggle to find a new hope. This reigns even more truth when she mercilessly kills Shunichi, the boy who Hana had previously declared their “savior” and had been trying to save for the whole first twenty minutes. When we think about how Shunichi and Hana both end up I thought “What was the point for Hana to die”? FO course it was to protect Shunichi but after she died her meaning for death became meaningless, she ended up dying for nothing in retrospect. Or die she? Maybe it wasn’t what she died for but her willingness to die. Anyway, the reason Anthea kills him is he shows signs of turning into a Pandora and she shoots him outright. We learn from the Flowers HQ that it was because of his hue changing to black. Which is sad and unfortunate if we consider how quickly things can change from hopeful to abysmal.

And that sort of sings through the whole episode. But I think the one “hope” if that’s not ironic enough is that Anthea does kill Shunichi right away. I know she was probably trained that way and all. But I think her willingness to put an end to what was a few seconds ago their “one chance” shows just how much she hasn’t given up and is willing to fight. Immediately after she quote’s someone we haven’t met yet and makes the “hope paradox” as if she is still struggling herself thought. Anthea herself may be bordering that line of hope and despair that this world is caught in. As for the other two Flowers they show, all I can say it that I hope we see more of the tan girl. I assume all of the girls have loved ones they are fighting for and while I didn’t really care that Hana’s parent died and her brother being left taken, I felt the harshness of the world they live in, which I assume was the goal. Hana’s mere inclusion in the story is rather tragic and sad, but I already talked about that enough.

Moving onto the animation, which I have already seen still’s and close-ups of people complaining. I personally thought it looked good. Not great in terms of art aspects, but amazing in terms of animation quality and shot composition. During action scenes there was a natural flow that made everything that happened that more impactful. The scene transitions also kept the heavy fast narrative much easier to get invested in and follow. Personally I liked all the character designs but can understand that some people prefer that “light novel” design better. But seeing those would be almost impossible to animate to the extent Under The Dog does, it’s a win. Something I also immediately noticed was that all the English-speaking people sounded very good. Some of their lines were a little silly. But their accents were clearly American and as an American who would notice something like that, makes me feel warm and fuzzy. Also all the military art, dialogue and actions felt very natural and realistic. I know it’s not something too noticeable but the attention to detail is what I’m getting at here. Under The Dog clearly had a lot of work put into it and care for what it’s trying to say and even the ephemeral things that don’t really matter. Because Under The Dog is all about pulling you into the world that these people live in and maybe slowly realizing that its only a few steps ahead of our world. Its trying to make this a personal story, and I like that.

I can only speculate on what Under The Dog ends up telling us about humanity, but right away I know its going to be about real feelings. Which is a good sign. Some sci-fi series get so caught up in their concepts that they forget to ground it into something that we can care about. As for my feelings on it, I left wanting more.

“Star Wars” Star Daisy Ridley Chased Off Social Media

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Daisy Ridley Force AwakensYesterday was a sad day for Star Wars fans, as actual human cinnamon roll Daisy Ridley deleted her instagram. Her actions followed harassment from “fans” and followers, which had been going on for some time. The final straw for both sides, however, was a post she made about the 2016 Teen Choice Awards.

When Hollywood Gets Political

The 2016 Teen Choice Awards chose to honor victims of gun violence by inviting their families to the stage. They created the hashtag “#stoptheviolence” to discuss the event. Many attendees of the awards show posted to their social media accounts about the hashtag. Some even took photos with the honored guests, giving them more visibility and including information about their victimized loved ones.

What Do Actors Owe Us?

Those following the page took Ridley’s (highly personal) post as a political stance. On facebook you can still see the arguments going on between “fans” urging her to back away from politics, even accusing her of being a hypocrite because of the weapons she uses on screen. Still other fans, upset by Ridley leaving instagram, have started posting on co-star John Boyega’s accounts asking him to tell her to return. Boyega, with all the protective instinct of an older brother, has respectfully declined.john boyega instagram

This news is particularly shameful knowing that Ridley has been very candid and loving with her fans. Several months ago she opened up about her struggles with endometriosis. Before that, she responded to criticism about her natural body shape unapologetically,  addressing the age-old adage that “real women have curves”.

This is not the first time a celebrity has left social media due to fan harassment or interaction. Most recently, of course, Leslie Jones left twitter following racist comments on her page. Patton Oswalt, Hayley Atwell, and Steven Moffat have all left twitter behind thanks to fan interaction. So when will we, the human race, learn our lesson? When will we learn to treat our celebrities with love and respect?

We’re still holding out hope.

Fans Demand Knighthood For The Fourth Doctor

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Doctor Who? That’s Sir Doctor to you. Or at least, some fans think it ought to be.

A new Change.org petition is demanding that the British government award Tom Baker a “long overdue” knighthood. Baker played the fourth incarnation of the Doctor on the British sci-fi classic Doctor Who.

The 12 Doctors

So far, 12 actors have portrayed the Doctor — 13 if you count John Hurt’s one-shot “War Doctor”.

The Doctor is a “Time Lord” — a nigh-immortal alien who can travel through time and space. When his body is damaged beyond repair, the Doctor can “regenerate” into a new one. The process changes his physical appearance and personality. It’s also allowed the show to continue for more than 50 years, with new actors stepping into the iconic role as needed.

The role was originated by William Hartnell in 1963. In 1966, Hartnell’s failing health led to his replacement by Patrick Troughton. Since then, a host of actors have played the role. Scottish actor Peter Capaldi is the 12th and current Doctor. He took the reins from Matt Smith in 2013.

The definitive Doctor Who

But Baker, who played the role between 1974 and 1981, is considered by many to be the definitive Doctor.

The petition calls it a “travesty” that Baker has not been recognized by the British government. It cites his “lifetime in entertainment and tireless charity work.” The petition will be delivered to the U.K. Cabinet Office Honours and Appointments Secretariat.

Review: ‘Strawberry Shortcake’ #4: Deals With Criticism

Monkeys Fighting Robots

There’s a new foodie blogger in Berry Bitty City–And her name is Raisin Cane! Berrykin Bloom was planning to book Strawberry Shortcake to cater his event but Raisin convinces him to hold a competitive tasting with “Pie Man’s on Porcupine Peak.” Can Strawberry and her friends overcome the power of online persuasion? The voters will decide!

Writing

One of the brightest problems this book had in the beginning was the awkward introduction of modern technology to the classic franchise. Now, writer Georgia Ball has found a way to showcase the importance of this addition by conveying great lessons about proper use of social media, and how a person needs to handle unwanted and negative attention from it.

After getting a few bad reviews, Strawberry realizes she needs to confront her rival Purple Pieman about it, because she believes the one giving the bad reviews is working with him. The fact she is willing to confront the person she believes is the cause of the harassment is already a good lesson about how to deal with online bullying in real life. The issue only gets better from there, and is full of perfect moments about what to do when someone is being negative to you online.

The back up story about confronting your friends is interesting but may have worked better in a full issue. Writer Kristen Gudsnuk tries to pack in a very heavy message in only four pages. It works, but probably could have done better as an issue’s main story.

Strawberry Shortcake

Artwork

The art of Amy Mebberson continues to retain the same level of quality it did in previous issues. It works to offer the perfect level of serious and comedic moments which appear in the issue. The art of the backup story by Nicoletta Baldari is charming as well, but offers a much softer art style than the more expressive one in the main story. Still, neither styles seems out of place and both meld great together.

Conclusion

Though some may brush off the title as being too childish, it is still very important to look at how appropriate and valuable series is to younger readers. This book continues to be a great starter series for people hoping to get children into comic books.

Top 5 Moments From ‘Harley Quinn’ #1

Monkeys Fighting Robots

SPOILER ALERT FOR HARLEY QUINN #1

Everyone’s favorite lady with a mallet is back to make the world a little more cheerful. (WARNING: Cheerfulness may come with many unwanted side effects, such as zombie attacks, sharp objects, and catapults). So far, it looks like her life will be far from normal (as usual), and now it’s time to look at the top five moments from the first issue of her new series and see which were the best.

0012

5. From Alien to Hot Dog

What happens when an alien named Vertigax crash lands on Earth? He tries to hide himself as a cow but ends up getting sent to the slaughterhouse and turned into hot dogs. The insane escalation of events from his arrival, to becoming hot dogs, and being the cause of humans turning into zombies is so entertaining that it easily made the list.

0005

4. A One Woman Show

While standing on stage with a microphone, Harley takes the time to update everyone on who she is. A quick review of her origin and an introduction of her buddies helps to let the reader know what has been happening in her life before now. Given how many titles she has been in, this little segment was a very amusing way to catch everyone up.

0002

3. Ivy And Harley at the spa

Sometimes it’s the more personal moments which really help to make an issue memorable. This issue began with Ivy and Harley sharing an afternoon together at a spa to take the time to catch up with each other. Spending time with your bestie is always fun, and seeing two of the best friends in comics just enjoy themselves was a very welcomed sight.

0020

2. The Scatapult

Why does Harley has a catapult on the roof of her building? Why not? Realizing she needs to get an injured friend to the hospital as soon as possible she puts him and fires him in the direction of the establishment. The use of such a device on anyone is entertaining enough, but using it as a means to get someone to a hospital as soon as possible is dementedly brilliant.

0017

1. I’ll save you!

What do you do when someone’s been bitten by a zombie? Harley knows and quickly jumps into action. After her ally/stalker/number one fan Red Tool gets bitten by a zombie, her first reaction is to make sure he doesn’t turn into a zombie. Unfortunately, it doesn’t exactly work out the best for him. Still, the crazy act is incredibly amusing and easily earns the top stop on this list.

What were your favorite moments from Harley Quinn #1? Leave a comment below and let us know.
