Geekflix – Top ‘Netflix’ Picks For January 2017

Monkeys Fighting Robots

A new year is upon us which means new releases are coming to Netflix. It’s time to look at the movies and series which will be required viewing for geeks. This time let’s see if any of these titles can help to fulfill some of the many New Year’s Resolutions you may have created for yourself for 2017.

Caddyshack

1. Caddyshack (January 1st)

Is your revolution to watch more classic comedy movies? Then try this infamous classic starring Rodney Dangerfield and Bill Murray about everything which can go wrong at a country club. If you need a laugh in the new year this is definitely the film you need to check out.

Braveheart

2. Braveheart (January 1st)

Is your revolution to explore more movies starring actors who used to be in more movies? Then the epic Braveheart is perfect. It features Mel Gibson as legendary freedom fighter William Wallace. It will have you quoting lines like “They may take our lives, but they’ll never take our freedom” all year.

The Shining

3. The Shining (January 1st)

Looking to partake in more horror movies in 2017? Then “Here’s Johnny!” Look no further than this film based on a Stephen King novel, directed by Stanley Kubrick, and starring Jack Nicholson. If the idea of these elements don’t have you trembling with nervous anticipation then you don’t know what real horror is.

Hugo

4. Hugo(January 1st)

Hoping to spend the year watching more movies by notable directors? Then start with this one by Martin Scorsese which is the perfect light hearted start to getting into the director’s more intense movies. Also, it’s a true love letter to every filmmaker or dreamer who ever worries about the impact their creations have on the world.

Superman

5. Superman: The Movie and Superman II (January 1st)

Hoping to watch some of the earlier films based on comic book this year? Then look now further than these films based on the Man of Steel. You probably won’t want to go any farther in the film series though, as the third and fourth films in the franchise slip a little bit in there quality. Trust us, they get pretty shaky.

Always Sunny

6. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Season 11 (January 3rd)

In need of more humor in your life in 2017? Then it’s time to catch up with the gang at Paddy’s Pub and take part in all the craziness they get into. Watch as this season they once again play Chardee MacDennis, go to court, and go to Hell.

A Series of Unfortunate Events

7. A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Series (January 13th)

Hoping to understand the suffering a bit better this year? The story of the Baudelaire orphans and the trials and tribulations they face against the evil Count Olaf will help you to appreciate what true unfortunate looks like. Also, Neil Patrick Harris seems ready to deliver a truly spine tingling performance as the Count.

8. Roger Corman’s Death Race 2050 (January 17th)

Hoping to watch more cult classics in the year of the rooster? This sequel to one of the most underappreciated cult films of all time, Death Race 2000 could be a good place to start. Watch as in a dystopian future the main attraction is a sporting event where pedestrians are killed for points.

Voltron

9. Voltron: Legendary Defender: Season 2 (January 20th)

Are you hoping to have more giant robots in your life in 2017? The second season to the highly praised Voltron: Legendary Defender arrives on Netflix on the 20th. After the cliffhanger from the previous season, fans are waiting on baited breath to know what happened to the Voltron Paladins.

10. Sharknado : The 4th Awakens (January 31st)

Need more movies which are so bad they turn around and become awesome again? Then it’s time to watch the 4th film in a series which makes absolutely no sense but is still a lot of fun to watch. This time the impossible weather phenomenon tears up Las Vegas and what happens there won’t stay there.

Jennifer Lawrence Would Play Mystique In ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

While promoting her upcoming film Passengers, Mystique actress Jennifer Lawrence talked about wanting to play the character in Guardians of the Galaxy.

“Oh my god, I would love to. I would choose that over doing another X-Men movie maybe. I won’t be Mystique in the X-Men movies, but I would love to be Mystique in the Guardians of the Galaxy. I wonder if that can happen.”

Lawrence has been very vocal about not wanting a return to the X-Men franchise. She talked about not wanting a part after Days of Future Past, but still had major role in X-Men: Apocalypse.

Would you want to see Lawrence play Mystique in a future GotG film? It would mean that the X-Men/MCU would be a united universe, which many fans would approve of.

The next installment in the GotG franchise, Vol. 2, hits theaters on May 5, 2017.

The Year’s Strangest Documentary Is About Being Competitively Tickled

Monkeys Fighting Robots

‘Tickled’ Introduces Viewers To The Bizarre World Of Competitive Endurance Tickling.

At first glance, the documentary about tickling almost seems like a joke and a little confusing. After viewing ‘Tickled‘, the confusion is still there but there is a bit more of an understanding on why this was even created. Under the ridiculous surface level is an dark tale of an underground world we had no idea was happening.

Journalist David Farrier begins ‘Tickled‘ for laughs but ends diving deep into a world that needs uncovering. Starting the documentary ‘Tickled‘ with a light tone is a smart. It allows viewers to fall into this false sense of security. Almost immediately though, David Farrier is met with major resistance. All that security is stripped.

“All Of This Over Some Tickling?”
David Farrier

To begin, David Farrier gets told that he wasn’t allowed to interview anyone from Jane O’Brien Media because they does not want to associate with a homosexual journalist. Yes, the super homoerotic “competitive endurance tickling” has no intention of working with anything gay. Farrier, an open homosexual, finds it as puzzling as I do. That’s when things get interesting for Farrier and this story.

After many threatening emails to shut this documentary down, the legal threats start rolling in. The people of Jane O’Brien Media bully Farrier and TV producer Dylan Reeve to stop. They send 3 representatives to New Zealand to further the bullying. The first interaction is one of the most tense scenes I’ve seen in 2016. It starts off nice but quickly takes a dark turn. The 3 men soon leave but Farrier and Reeve quickly follow them to America.

This is when ‘Tickled‘ takes the dark turn no one could expect. We first meet a former former tickling competitor who is also begin harassed by Jane O’Brien Media and someone named Debbie J. Kuhn. The competitor known as T.J. asked Youtube to take down a video of him he found from the tickling days. From that moment, his life was forever changed. His videos begin to then pop up everywhere with direct threats from Kuhn. They go as far as calling the school he works out and attempt to ruin his career. This drives David Farrier and Dylan Reeve to further this investigation, like following Kevin Clarke (one of the men sent to New Zealand to bully) to a production set. That move is ballsy but pays off with an awkward interaction.

“This Tickling Empire Is Way Bigger Than We Ever Imagine”

In an interesting turn of events, Farrier finds Richard Ivey. He’s an independent tickling producer and has no problem with interviews about the company he runs. The next stop in this bizarre documentary is the introduction of “Terri Tickle”. She’s the originator of this underground world. We meet a former casting director of Terri who talks bout the process. This combined with Ivey’s stories start to shed a little light on why this is so popular and who its made for. It’s also said that “Terri Tickle’ did similar scare tactics in the past that Jane O’Brien Media does now.

The creators of ‘Tickled‘ strike gold when they uncover documents about Jane O’Brien Media. It links the company to David D’Amato. D’Amato is a known for attempting to destroy evidence of a relationship he had with a minor. Is he what connects these two tickling companies and all the shady events? When they confront him on the streets, he threatens them with legal action like the emails.

Before heading back to New Zealand to wrap things up, Farrier and Reeve contact David D’Amato’s step-mother; where she reveals that D’Amato has a tickling “past” and may still be involved in the shady world. This almost confirms everything to come before it. The documentary suddenly wraps, leaving you with no answers!

Final Thoughts:

If just reading the recap was strange, imagine viewing it. Hell, imagine living it.

I’ve never seen anything quite like ‘Tickled‘ before. It’s an exploitive look at a fetish but it’s also used as a way to defend the innocent people being harassed. This gave a voice to many who couldn’t fight against Jane O’Brien Media or David D’Amato. Sadly it seems like their influence is still strong. Many of the men shown in the film coming out against the tickling companies are now saying they were in the documentary without their permission.

Seems like more shady tricks from Jane O’Brien Media.

It is interesting to see director David Farrier get so invested into this strange world. I believe him being told “no” from the get-go is what fueled that passion. Never has he been met with such resistance and that drives his investigative side to new heights. Though he does cross a few lines, those are no lines the horrible people featured here haven’t crossed before.

‘Moon Knight’ To Finally Have An Animated Debut, Find Out Where and When

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Moon Knight has been getting a lot of attention in the past two years, from star-studded, epic comics, to video game spots, but it was not always thus. Moon Knight has oft been one of Marvel’s most mysterious, yet under used crime fighters in their comic book universe. In between the comics and video games, various varying rumors have suggested he is getting prepped for a Netflix run. However, a very unremarkable announcement, only broadcasted a because a of recent tweet from a recent Moon Knight artist Declan Shalvey, confirmed that Moon Knight will finally be getting an animated debut.

“HOLY CRAP! Moon Knight’s animated debut, and it’s my costume design! Ultimate Spider-Man: The Moon Knight Before Christmas” airs Dec. 17.”

Animated- Moon-Knight

Declan Shalvey has reason to celebrate, as he ushered in this Moon Knight costume that has been only partially utilized in the Smallwood/Lemire run as of late.

Disney XD’s Ultimate Spider-Man is bringing Moon Knight onboard to assist Spider-Man in taking on a new Mysterio in the episode “Moon Knight before Christmas.” Fans of other Marvel or DC Comics’ characters might be put off, but Moon Knight fans are hungry for anything that brings the Fist of Khonshu to the forefront of the comic book adaptation conscientiousness.

Moon Knight has had some trouble making it to the big or small screen for some reason. There was the hint at the end of Captain America, a small independent company from New York that has yet to deliver, and yet another by the name of Sun and Lions Studios, who has a promising one in the works.

However, the conditions couldn’t be any closer to perfect as they are right now.

Marvel has been having a lot of success with their Netflix shows, which many find to be the best suitable place for Marvel’s White Knight. The Punisher and Ghost Rider have been given a test drive on popular Marvel shows. The Punisher cameo quickly followed with a show, and Ghost Rider is rumored to as well.

Will the Moon Knight Before Christmas bring gifts of the kind of success the Marvel character is looking for, or will Marc Spector receive more coal this year?

Leave your thoughts below.

Donald Glover On “Cool” Lando Calrissian In ‘Han Solo’ Spinoff Film

Monkeys Fighting Robots

In a recent roundtable talk with Jon Favreau, Donald Glover talked about his “cool” approach to playing Lando Calrissian in the untitled Han Solo spinoff film.

“It [Lando] was the first action figure I ever had. I remember my dad giving it to me. I had a Darth Vader one and this one that I lost the cape and the lightsaber came out of the arm, and I ripped that out. I remember Lando really well. He was like the only black guy in space. And he was the cool one. I just realized, he still has to be cool. And cool is an interesting thing. Cool changes depending on the perspective. Also, it’s fun because [the Han Solo movie is set] before [Empire Strikes Back], so he’s still figuring it out a little bit, which is fun.”

Starring alongside Glover in the movie will be Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo as well as Emilia Clarke in a currently unknown role.

Are you looking forward to Glover as Lando? Let us know in the comments.

Review: ‘Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable’: Episode 38

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Shining D (Diamond) Is Unbreakable, Part 2

The opening is finally back to working order without the rewind effect of previous episodes. It does feature the sound effects turned up higher so it’s a little distracting but at least the joyful and uplifting song is back. This is a good development, because it’s a mild distraction which is needed from this intense penultimate episode.

The episode continues where the previous one left off as Josuke must find a way to be able to take on Kira who proves to be a man with many tricks up his sleeve. He analyzes the situation and quickly realizes if he were to fight Josuke in a close combat fight, Josuke would have the advantage. Kira has to find a way to properly defeat the young Stand user without getting close. Luckily for Kira he still has the Stray Cat on his side and the ability to make the air bubbles it shoots explosive.

Though Josuke is able to find a way to see Stray Cat’s air bullets his troubles are far from over. Instead as soon as one problem is fixed a new one presents itself. It becomes a battle of wits instead of a straight on fight to the death. This a welcomed sight as even though a good battle between the main character and the ultimate villain is always entertaining in anime, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure has always been defined by its randomness and by throwing its audience a curveball just when they think they are able to predict what is going to happen next.

Only one episode remains in this arc. Will Josuke and his friends be able to defeat Kira or will the serial killer find a way to turn the tide? All will be revealed on the last episode of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable.

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable is streaming on Crunchyroll.

Open Up These Other Classic Christmas Cartoons

Monkeys Fighting Robots

When I was growing up, television seemed to be amok with Christmas cartoons and specials. That seems to have gone by the wayside now, the exceptions being Rudolph, Frosty, the Grinch, and Charlie Brown. Which is why none of them appear on this list. Here, Dear Reader, I give you four Christmas themed cartoons you may have forgotten about or never seen. Whichever the case, watch them and be a kid again.

“Xmas Marks the Spot” (The Real Ghostbusters)

Written by: J. Michael Straczynski
Directed by: Richard Raynis

Christmas1This first season episode aired on December 6, 1986. Out on a call, the Ghostbusters are consumed by a violent winter storm which turns out to be a time portal. They’re sent back in time to 19th century London, where Ebenezer Scrooge is being plagued by the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present, and Future. They trap the ghosts, return to modern New York, and empty their catch into the Containment Unit. Unfortunately, this disrupts the event of Christmas. Egon Spengler then ventures into the Containment Unit to find the Christmas Ghosts, bring them back out, and set Christmas right again.

A Garfield Christmas

Written by: Jim Davis
Directed by : Phil Roman

Christmas2This special originally aired on CBS on December 21, 1987. It was shown every year after until 2000. Now it’s only available on DVD. I think. Walmart had it as part of a Garfield holiday pack exclusive to them.

If you can find it, definitely watch it. Jon takes Garfield and Odie to the Arbuckle Farm for Christmas! It’s hilarious with a message that it’s better to give gifts than receive them. Plus Lou Rawls sings “Gimme, Gimme, Gimme, Gimme”, which may be better than his song for Garfield’s Halloween Adventure.

A Pinky and the Brain Christmas

Written by: Peter Hastings
Directed by: Rusty Mills

Don’t even read this. Just go to BN.com and order the first season of Pinky and the Brain on DVD. This episode is in it. It originally aired as a primetime special on the now defunct WB network on December 13, 1995.

If you don’t almost piss your pants watching this, consider therapy. As per usual, Brain has a plan to take over the world. This time it involves manufacturing millions of mind controlling devices disguised as Noodle Noggin dolls. Of course, the only factory that could possibly manage an output of this magnitude is Santa’s workshop. Pinky and the Brain catch a flight to the North Pole and are immediately captured and interrogated by Shotzie, the head elf. He believes the mice are corporate spies working for either the Easter Bunny or Hershel the Hannukah Goblin. Hilarity ensues as the mice get the dolls made, take the place of two of Santa’s reindeer (Brain: “Just act normal.” Pinky: “Mooooooo.”), and return to Acme Labs.

In the end, Brain’s plan fails epically, as always. Yet he still gets the world – in the form of a key chain. His Christmas present from Pinky.

It’s a Wonderful Tiny Toons Christmas Special

Written by: Sherri Stone & Deanna Oliver
Directed by: Jon McClenahan

Christmas4

This. If you don’t actually piss your pants watching this, no degree of therapy can help you. A parody of the classic Jimmy Stewart film It’s A Wonderful Life, it originally aired as a Fox primetime special on December 6, 1992.

Buster Bunny is in charge of putting together a Christmas show at Acme Loonivesity. Unfortunately for him, everything that can go wrong, does. Fed up, he wishes he was never drawn. His guardian angel Harvey grants that wish. Buster is then shown an alternate Acme Acres in which he doesn’t exist. After seeing how much he matters, Buster takes his wish back and happily reassumes control of the show.

The inside jokes are non-stop. At one point Whoopi Goldberg shows up with Billy Crystal and says, “I’m just here for comic relief.”, a reference to the charity comedy special they used to do on HBO with Robin Williams. Speaking of which, Williams then flies by in the background dressed as Peter Pan. Another scene has Elmyra dressed up as New York socialite Leona Helmsley. Kids won’t get these jokes, but adults certainly will.

This might be the most quotable cartoon ever written. It was released on VHS, but never on DVD. Which is a shame. If any Christmas cartoon deserves to be seen year after year, it’s this crazy masterpiece.

That’s all, folks! Check them out if you want. It might be a nice vacation from Burl Ives and Snoopy.

Darlene Love: The Rockin’ Voice of Christmas

Monkeys Fighting Robots

You may not recognize the name, but you’ll recognize the voice. For me, Darlene Love has been synonymous with Christmas since 1992. That’s the year she sang “All Alone on Christmas”, written by Steven Van Zandt, for the movie Home Alone 2: Lost In New York. The song accompanies the montage of Kevin McAllister’s initial adventure through Manhattan.

The chiming bells, blaring horns, and an infectious drumbeat light the song like a rocket. Gives it that 1960s rock ‘n roll sound.

A sound Ms. Love helped create.

IN THE BACKGROUND

On July 26, 1941, number eighty-four on Rolling Stone‘s 100 Greatest Singers list was born. Darlene Love was the daughter of a minister in San Antonio, Texas. She honed her instrument in the church. In her teens, she joined a little-known girl group named the Blossoms.

In 1962, the Blossoms began working with uber-record producer Phil Spector. They were one block in Spector’s legendary “Wall of Sound”.

Darlenelove1Ms. Love recorded “He’s A Rebel”, her first song singing lead vocals. Upon hearing the song for the first time on the radio, Ms. Love was sandbagged – the song was credited to the Crystals. They were a more experienced girl group produced by Spector, who thought using their name would promote the song better. The song hit number one in November of 1962. And no one knew it was Ms. Love’s voice cascading over them from their transistor radios.

The Blossoms contributed back ground vocals for many of the 1960’s biggest hits. “Be My Baby” (The Ronettes), “Johnny Angel” (Coach actress Shelley Fabares), “Monster Mash” (Bobby “Boris” Picket), and “That’s Life” (Frank Sinatra) are just a few of them.
Ms. Love’s first brush with Christmas was on the 1963 compilation A Christmas Gift For You from Phil Spector. The song was “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)”. Ronnie Spector of the Ronettes was supposed to supply lead vocals, but wasn’t able to inject enough emotion into the song. Ms. Love stepped up. This song is now her signature tune.

During the 1970s, Ms. Love took a break from singing to focus on her family. While working as a house cleaner in Beverly Hills, she heard her Christmas song on the radio and decided to ditch the Pledge and return to the stage.

A conversation with E Street Band member Steven Van Zandt brought Ms. Love to New York City in 1982. A jukebox musical titled Leader of the Pack was opening on Broadway. It featured the rock n’ roll songs of Ellie Greenwich. Ms. Love played herself in the show. Of course, you’ll recognize her from another acting gig: playing Danny Glover’s wife Trish Murtaugh in the Lethal Weapon movie series.

TAKING CENTER STAGE

Band director Paul Shaffer once declared, “Darlene Love is rock n’ roll!” The other man who knew this was a former Indiana weatherman who now had his own late night talk show on NBC.

That man was David Letterman. In December of 1986, Mr. Letterman invited Ms. Love to perform her signature Christmas song on his show, Late Night with David Letterman. Ms. Love’s appearance became a yearly tradition; one which Mr. Letterman and Mr. Shaffer brought with them to the Late Show with David Letterman on CBS starting in 1993.

There, Ms. Love performed her song every year with the exception of 2007 when the Writer’s Guild strike brought late night talk shows and the entertainment industry to a halt. When Mr. Letterman announced his retirement, Ms. Love performed her song one last time on December 19, 2014. Mr. Letterman has said that Ms. Love’s performance is his favorite part of Christmas.

Darlenelove2People were recognizing the name Darlene Love. And so did the music industry. In 2011, Ms. Love was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by one of her greatest admirers, the divine Bette Midler.

Of Ms. Love, Ms. Midler said: “She changed my view of the world, listening to those songs, you had to dance, you had to move, you had to keep looking for the rebel boy.”

Their paths would cross again in 2014 when Ms. Midler released an album paying tribute to the many girl groups that inspired her. Ms. Midler and Ms. Love recorded a duet of “He’s Sure the Boy I Love”. It’s a standout on a flawless album.

The 2013 documentary 20 Feet From Stardom was made to shed light on the music industry’s unsung background singers. Ms. Love played a prominent role. She took the stage at the 86th annual Academy Awards when the film won the Oscar for Best Documentary.

On September 8, 2015 – a gift from God. Introducing Darlene Love was released. Ms. Love’s first solo CD in years. The entire album was produced by Steven Van Zandt. Two of the songs were written specifically for her by Bruce Springsteen, another long-time admirer.

As of now, I know of no plans on a follow-up album, but it’s possible. Ms. Love is still out there, singing the hell out of any tune she wants. A song should be so lucky. And if you’re in New York City, stop by BB King’s Bar and Grill to catch Ms. Love’s annual Christmas show.
I can attest to Ms. Love’s talent. I had the privilege to see her perform live when I was living in New York City. It happened quite by accident. Lance Bass was performing in Hairspray on Broadway, so I bought tickets to see it. He wasn’t in the matinee performance.

But Ms. Love was.

She was playing the role of Motormouth Maybelle. Any disappointment I had of not seeing Mr. Bass went out the window at this fortunate turn of events. Ms. Love brought the house down with her character’s signature number “I Know Where I’ve Been”. I saw the show two more times after that. Eventually I saw Mr. Bass. But what I remember most is seeing Ms. Love every time.

One performance my friend and I won the lottery. Two seats in the first row for $25. When the entire cast took the stage to perform the last song “You Can’t Stop the Beat”, there was Ms. Love standing directly over me. She belted it out. Attacked it, even. All while absorbing the frenetic energy thrown back by the crowd. At one point she looked down. We made eye contact. I mouthed “Great job” and “Thank you”. Maybe I was delirious with joy, but I’m pretty certain she smiled and nodded at me.

Even if she didn’t, who cares? I saw Darlene Love live!

Below is Ms. Love’s last performance of “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” on the Late Show with David Letterman.
