A new year is upon us which means new releases are coming to Netflix. It’s time to look at the movies and series which will be required viewing for geeks. This time let’s see if any of these titles can help to fulfill some of the many New Year’s Resolutions you may have created for yourself for 2017.

Is your revolution to watch more classic comedy movies? Then try this infamous classic starring Rodney Dangerfield and Bill Murray about everything which can go wrong at a country club. If you need a laugh in the new year this is definitely the film you need to check out.

2. Braveheart (January 1st)

Is your revolution to explore more movies starring actors who used to be in more movies? Then the epic Braveheart is perfect. It features Mel Gibson as legendary freedom fighter William Wallace. It will have you quoting lines like “They may take our lives, but they’ll never take our freedom” all year.

3. The Shining (January 1st)

Looking to partake in more horror movies in 2017? Then “Here’s Johnny!” Look no further than this film based on a Stephen King novel, directed by Stanley Kubrick, and starring Jack Nicholson. If the idea of these elements don’t have you trembling with nervous anticipation then you don’t know what real horror is.

Hugo

4. Hugo(January 1st)

Hoping to spend the year watching more movies by notable directors? Then start with this one by Martin Scorsese which is the perfect light hearted start to getting into the director’s more intense movies. Also, it’s a true love letter to every filmmaker or dreamer who ever worries about the impact their creations have on the world.

Superman

5. Superman: The Movie and Superman II (January 1st)

Hoping to watch some of the earlier films based on comic book this year? Then look now further than these films based on the Man of Steel. You probably won’t want to go any farther in the film series though, as the third and fourth films in the franchise slip a little bit in there quality. Trust us, they get pretty shaky.

Always Sunny

6. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Season 11 (January 3rd)

In need of more humor in your life in 2017? Then it’s time to catch up with the gang at Paddy’s Pub and take part in all the craziness they get into. Watch as this season they once again play Chardee MacDennis, go to court, and go to Hell.

A Series of Unfortunate Events

7. A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Series (January 13th)

Hoping to understand the suffering a bit better this year? The story of the Baudelaire orphans and the trials and tribulations they face against the evil Count Olaf will help you to appreciate what true unfortunate looks like. Also, Neil Patrick Harris seems ready to deliver a truly spine tingling performance as the Count.

8. Roger Corman’s Death Race 2050 (January 17th)

Hoping to watch more cult classics in the year of the rooster? This sequel to one of the most underappreciated cult films of all time, Death Race 2000 could be a good place to start. Watch as in a dystopian future the main attraction is a sporting event where pedestrians are killed for points.

Voltron

9. Voltron: Legendary Defender: Season 2 (January 20th)

Are you hoping to have more giant robots in your life in 2017? The second season to the highly praised Voltron: Legendary Defender arrives on Netflix on the 20th. After the cliffhanger from the previous season, fans are waiting on baited breath to know what happened to the Voltron Paladins.

10. Sharknado : The 4th Awakens (January 31st)

Need more movies which are so bad they turn around and become awesome again? Then it’s time to watch the 4th film in a series which makes absolutely no sense but is still a lot of fun to watch. This time the impossible weather phenomenon tears up Las Vegas and what happens there won’t stay there.
