Kevin Feige Calls Thanos “The Main Character” In ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Although the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been going since 2008’s smash-hit Iron Man, we have yet to see “the purple guy”, better known to comic book fans as Thanos, cause any destruction. However, in next year’s Avengers film, that is all going to change.

Collider recently talked to Marvel President Kevin Feige regarding Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, and he briefly talked about how big of a role Thanos plays in the movie. We’ve all known Thanos will be an integral part of the plot, but just how much time will the character have on screen?

“Thanos in Infinity War is – in a movie that has a lot of characters, you could almost go so far as to say he is the main character, and that’s a bit of a departure from what we’ve done before, but that was appropriate for a movie called Infinity War.”

Considering that Avengers: Infinity War is one of the largest casts ever put to screen, that’s a bit responsibility to hold for Josh Brolin’s Thanos.

Are you looking forward to finally seeing Thanos take on the Avengers? Why or why not? Leave us your comments below.

Avengers: Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Tom Holland, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, Scarlett Johansson, Brie Larson, Cobie Smulders, Elizabeth Olson, Jeremy Renner, Sebastian Stan, Peter Dinklage, Chadwick Boseman, Chris Hemsworth, Karen Gillian, Bradley Cooper, Samuel L. Jackson, Paul Rudd, Josh Brolin, Paul Bettany, and Mark Ruffalo.

Although no official synopsis has been released at this point, we can safely assume that Avengers: Infinity War will follow a story that includes Thanos, with the Infinity Gauntlet, taking on the Avengers. A more detailed plot summary will be released as the film’s release date nears.

Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4, 2018.

A Black History Month Tribute To Great African-American Directors

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Monkeys Fighting Robots’ Black History Month celebration continues! The movie-making business is a mechanism of moving parts that can get complicated and confusing. Imagine the muddled robot effects of any Transformers movie and apply it to real life. The process of getting a film from concept to completion is a long, twisting road. Now imagine being African-American in a white-dominated industry and things get even more complex. However, some brothers and sisters, like the ones on our list, have conquered any and all hurdles to make some fantastic pieces of motion picture brilliance.

Black History Month Tribute To
Great African-American Directors

1. Spike Lee

When it comes to black history and film, Spike Lee is the directorial equivalent of Sidney Poitier with a dash of MLK and Malcolm X. Love him or hate him, you don’t make a list like this without Spike Lee. Financially he’s one of the highest grossing African-American director of all time. Critically, Spike’s made too many acclaimed films to mention here. The outspoken director is an ardent activist who’s earned the ire of right-wingers all over the United States. Spike also appears regularly at Madison Square Garden harassing opposing players on behalf of the New York Knicks.

Films To Watch:
Do The Right Thing – 1989
Inside Man – 2006
Chi-Raq – 2015

2. Ava DuVernay

You might want to call her “Ms. First.” DuVernay was the first black female nominated for Best Director at Sundance (she won) and the Golden Globes. Selma was the first film directed by a female African-American nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. DuVernay is a bold director who turned down a sure-hit offer from Disney to direct Black Panther. Instead, DuVernay tackled the 13th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution in the acclaimed Netflix documentary 13th.

Films To Watch:
Middle of Nowhere – 2012
Selma – 2014
13th – 2016

3. John Singleton

Singleton isn’t a household name like Spike Lee, but the American director has a potent filmography. The first African-American ever nominated for a Best Directing Oscar (Boyz n the Hood), Singleton spent the 90s making critically acclaimed films. In 2003, he put his touch on the Fast and Furious franchise when he directed 2 Fast 2 Furious. Singleton has not directed a feature since the ill-conceived Abduction in 2011. But the director remains involved in television as a director on shows like Empire, American Crime Story, and Rebel.

Films To Watch:
Boyz n the Hood – 1991
Higher Learning – 1995
Rosewood – 1997

4. F. Gary Gray

Few directors have a streak of hits like F. Gary Gray. The director debuted with the indie urban comedy Friday then made Set It Off and The Negotiator. But wait, there’s more! Gray followed all that up with The Italian Job. Sure, since then, Gray’s choices have been less than spectacular like A Man Apart. But in 2015, Gray returned to form and mainstream success with the biographical drama Straight Outta Compton.

Films To Watch:
The Negotiator – 1998
The Italian Job – 2001
Straight Outta Compton – 2015

5. Kasi Lemmons

One thing that makes Kasi Lemmons unique on this list is her long career as an actress dating back 1979. In 1997, Lemmons directed Eve’s Bayou, and her career behind the camera began. Lemmons’ passionate eye for directing was described as “an ongoing testament to the creative possibilities of film.” She last directed Black Nativity in 2013 but is set to lead two projects for release in 2017 and 2018.

Films To Watch:
Eve’s Bayou – 1998
The Caveman’s Valentine – 2001
Talk To Me – 2007

6. Antoine Fuqua

The hit-or-miss Fuqua mades duds like 2004s King Arthur and Brooklyn’s Finest. However, the director tips the scales back firmly in his favor with the underrated The Equalizer and Oscar-winning Training Day. And though his Magnificent Seven wasn’t all that magnificent, the entertaining, star-studded action movie earned nearly 200 million dollars worldwide.

Films To Watch:
Training Day – 2001
The Equalizer – 2014
The Magnificent Seven – 2016

7. Gordon Parks

Before Gordon Parks made an impact on the world of movies, he was an acclaimed photojournalist. Parks became the first African-American to direct a major Hollywood production in 1969. That year, Parks directed The Learning Tree, a film based on his semi-autobiographical novel of the same name. But to cinephiles, Parks is best remembered as the father of 70s “blaxploitation” films.

Films To Watch:
The Learning Tree – 1969
Shaft – 1971
Leadbelly – 1976

8. Dee Rees

Black history leads us to the award-winning Dee Rees. A graduate of NYU Film, Rees began her career as a protégé of legendary director Spike Lee and worked on Spike’s films Inside Man and When The Levees Broke. After winning praise for her short film Pariah, Rees made a feature film version which went on to earn a host of accolades as well. Rees is the youngest director on this list but continues to add strong films to her burgeoning legacy.

Films To Watch:
Pariah – 2011
Bessie – 2015
Mudbound – 2017

9. Honorable Mention: Oscar Micheaux

Any Black History Month tribute to filmmakers without Oscar Micheaux is only a faux celebration. Before there was much of a Hollywood to speak of, son of a slave and author, Oscar Micheaux became the first African-American to direct a major motion picture. Micheaux also ran a production company and wrote, directed, and/or produced 44 films, even effortlessly transitioning from silent to spoken films as the industry evolved. It would take a long while after Micheaux died in 1951 for black directors to gain notoriety, but it would’ve taken even longer without the cinematic pioneer.

Films To Watch:
Within Our Gates – 1920
Swing! – 1938
Lying Lips – 1939

‘Samurai Jack’ Season Five Trailer Arrives

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Jack is back. This is the tagline which has been the featured on Adult Swim for the return of Samurai Jack. The fifth season is set to premiere on March 11th, 2017 and has been proclaimed as being the final season many have always wanted. Now a full trailer has been released and fans are able to get a better glimpse of what to expect in this new season.

The most glaring aspect of this trailer is the extreme tone it delivers. Samurai Jack was known for containing the right amount of action to satisfy many fans of more mature cartoons but at the same time still managed to keep a rating of TV-Y7. This new trailer shows things are going to be a lot different this time around by featuring some extreme violence and mature storytelling elements. Jack (once again voiced by Phil LaMarr) is shown to be somehow become a timeless being and has lost himself in the course of his battle against Aku. He is also shown wielding a gun, getting stabbed, and bleeding profusely in the course of the brief trailer. The casualties of Aku and his forces are not simply limited to destroyed buildings and burning villages to showcase their wraith. Instead bodies of innocent bystanders dead on the ground are on clear display. It is more than obvious since the show was intended to air on Adult Swim, the creators have taken full advantage of the ability to push the boundaries of what they are allowed to include in terms of content. This will definitely be unlike anything fans of the show have seen before. With any luck it will find a way to be even more entertaining then it was previously.

DC on CW: Week in Review – All-New Heroes

Monkeys Fighting Robots

This series will be a brief, semi-comedic review of the CW superhero shows. You can check out last week’s review post here, or see the tally of winners below. The only shows discussed will be ‘Arrow’, ‘Flash’, and ‘Supergirl’. There WILL be some spoilers discussed, so only look at the reviews you’re up to date on!

Supergirl, “We Can Be Heroes” (Jan 30)

Supergirl
Winn clearly spent WAY less time on Mon-El’s suit than anyone else

Is Livewire supposed to be Supergirl’s Joker? If so, CW needs to get FOX’s Jerome instead. The twist of making Livewire a scapegoat was interesting, but not wholly earned. The brain-death plot line feels like a cheap way to resolve the Martian conflict. They save it at the end, but M’Gann deserved better. Winn is still pretty whiny, which I thought would stop after last week. Him then hopping to prove Supergirl wrong also feels off-brand. Seeing Guardian and Mon-El bumble around is entertaining, but it proves that Supergirl needs to cut down on its super-folk. CW shows already have too many heroes per series.

SCORE: 6.5/10 Car Doors

The Flash, “Dead or Alive” (Jan 31)

The Flash
“Who cares if I take him? You’ll get another Wells next season!”

Zack Stentz, you’ve done it again. Iris getting a chance to shine is great, and Kid Flash is still lots of fun. I like the idea of trans-dimensional Collector cops. The Speed Force could use agents like that instead of those creepy Dementor things. The Cisco/HR relationship development felt inevitable, but it was sweet to see it come to fruition. Cisco really does have a problem of falling in love with villains. It was great to see him be funny and dorky without relying on nerd culture references. Well, except for Westworld, but I get that. And what a great button with Barry and Wally! More than ever, I’m excited to see what’s next for The Flash!

SCORE: 8/10 Sci-Fi Novels

Arrow, “Second Chances” (Feb 1)

Arrow
Will the flashbacks to Hell finally stop after five years?

I like that there’s a new Black Canary, but I hope that Team Arrow slims its ranks down. Canary’s name and origin story are rather cringe-worthy, but she is a great DC staple. And the twist on the “what would Vince want” line was golden. While she might be fun, however, there seems to be no need for a new Al Ghul girl. The mini-me Felicity is somewhat interesting, but hopefully she’ll take a darker turn. Oliver’s helicopter scene is almost as unbelievably cool as Captain America’s. The flashbacks are finally wrapping up! We’re almost done with flashbacks! Hooray!

SCORE: 7/10 Flash Post-Its

WEEKLY WIN TALLY:

Arrow: 4.5 Weeks

The Flash: 3.5 Week

Supergirl: 3 Weeks

What show did you think won the week? Does Legends of Tomorrow take your vote? Do you think A.o.S. or Gotham outshines all the CW shows? Let us know in the comments below!

First Official Clip Released For ‘Logan’ – “You Know the Drill”

Monkeys Fighting Robots

20th Century Fox has released an awesome new clip for Logan, giving us possibly our best look yet at the dark and gritty tone of Hugh Jackman’s final Wolverine movie. Titled “You Know the Drill” the clip features Jackman’s iconic character as he tries to talk down a few armed di**heads.

Warning – This Clip Features Spoilers

The clip also shows that this older interpretation of Wolverine isn’t as quick to extend those metallic claws. instead of simply stabbing, dismembering, or killing these douchebags Wolverine simply gives the leader a broken nose. It looks like Wolverine is done with the old X-Men days and isn’t fond of showing people what he can do.

In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hideout on the Mexican border. But Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces.

Directed by James Mangold the film stars Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), Boyd Holbrook (Donald Pierce), Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), Dafne Keen (Laura Kinney/X-23), Doris Morgado (Maria), Stephen Merchant (Caliban), Elizabeth Rodriguez (Gabriela), and Richard E. Grant (Dr. Zander Rice). James Mangold is directing and helped on the screenplay along with Scott Frank and Michael Green.

Logan lands in theaters on March 3, 2017.

‘Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’ Super Bowl Trailer Released

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Disney has released an awesome new trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales during the Super Bowl.

Much like the first trailer, this Super Bowl spot doesn’t offer any story details for the upcoming Pirates sequel, but at least this time around we get to see Johnny Depp’s infamous Captain Jack Sparrow. The trailer also shows the return of Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner, who we last saw in At World’s End. From the looks of this trailer, the fifth installment of Disney’s Pirate franchise will be the darkest so far. Before the reveal of Sparrow, we are shown various sequences of epic proportions.

Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him.  Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.

Starring Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Javier Bardem, Kaya Scodelario, Geoffrey Rush, and Brenton Thwaites, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales opens May 25, 2017.
