’50 Shades Darker’ Review: The Franchise Finally Becomes “So Bad, It’s Good’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Director James Foley Brings Out The Campy Magic Of ’50 Shades’

With sleaze expert James Foley at the helm, ‘50 Shades Darker‘ is the first time the franchise embraces the insanity of itself. By no means am I saying this is quality cinema. There’s is far more flaws than any praise but for me, it hits the “so bad, it’s good” level.

The story picks up right where the first film left off. Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) is starting a new job at a publishing house, while she deals with her breakup from sadist billionaire Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan). The meek Anastasia left Christian after finding out how deep his need for BDSM goes and his overall detached personality.

It seems silly to even have them break up if they’d be getting back together within five minutes. That’s actually a major problem with most of the movie; it doesn’t give room for any tension. I’m not saying the material written is inspiring but allowing for these things like a break-up, attempted rape, or helicopter crash to sink would make for a better experience. Everything felt rushed over to get to the next scene, and when you got to the next scene…nothing happened!

I’d be happier if they were rushing each scene to get to another sex scene but it mostly led to more melodrama. Hell, I think there might be only about five sex scenes in the entire film. Most of which only last a minute or so. I guess coming from a film background where I’ve seen ‘A Serbian Film‘ and ‘Nymphomaniac‘, everything would feel tame in comparison. This is sadly the only department I felt the film held back on.

“Laters Baby”
– Anastasia To Christian (An Actual Line One Adult Says To Another)

While the movie still feels like the material of a self-edited novel, it shines with such a campy director. James Foley has directed films like ‘Fear‘, ‘At Close Range‘, and ‘Perfect Stranger‘ so he “gets” the insanity. While it was sad to see female director Sam Taylor-Johnson get booted, Foley feels like a better fit. With his past work, the sleazy factor is apparent…something he brings to this here. Foley basically took what could a be Lifetime Channel movie and gave it a cinematic flair. Everything feels more refined and polished, meaning that it’s taken very seriously. I think that seriousness adds to how funny this is.

The only truly unredeemable thing about the film is Dakota Johnson and the Anastasia Steele character. This is nothing against the actress personally but I can’t take her in this role. She’s not believable in any aspect of this role. Speaking of the role, Anastasia Steele is one of the weakest female characters since Bella in ‘Twilight‘. She’s the most bland stereotypical romance novel lead and it harms any chances of a good dynamic. For her to be this timid and awkward girl who beats herself up, any time she tries to be sassy…it’s a joke. If she was written better, the creepiness of Christian Grey would be better combated.

To me, I can see that there’s something good within the trashy source material. Presented in this film adaptation, any of the good moments do shine. I love the fact that a crazy girl from Christian’s past shows up. It was amazing to see her be in the background of so many shots; it felt like a horror movie as we watched her stalk them. If ‘50 Shades Darker’ had better focus, it could have made for a great erotic thriller plot. But it is another one of the plot points that is rushed over like I mentioned earlier.

Final Thoughts:

For as much this movie gets made fun of, I had a blast watching it. There’s just some “bad movies” that can be entertaining and ‘50 Shades Darker‘ is one of them.

The audience I saw it went wild for EVERYTHING. This totally has a cult following and people do passionately love it so I can’t knock it for that. It’s the perfect movie to bring your friends with and have a blast at the movies. It’s not award winning unless we are taking Razzies but there’s no shame in making a fun “bad” movie to enjoy.

The ‘Secret Empire’ is Here and The Details on Marvel’s New Event Are Revealed!

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Marvel’s Secret Empire story has been teased and built up for awhile, now we have the details on it.  Thanks to Newsarama via ABC we know that the writer for both the Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson Captain America series, Nick Spencer is writing the event. As for the art duties, that would be Steve McNiven, Daniel Acuna, Andrea Sorrentino, and Leinil Yu sharing them. The Secret Empire begins with #0 in April and finishes up in August with #9. Mark Brooks is set to handle the cover art for the Marvel Universe mega event.

If you’re wondering what Secret Empire is about, well as Marvel’s Senior Vice President Tom Brevoort Explains, “Steve (Rogers) has been kind of lining his dominoes up around the Marvel Universe to be able to make his move and bring about a Hydra revolution, a takeover,” and something happens that puts it in the public eye and the heroes of the Marvel Universe are ready to fight.

Secret Empire is the Culmination of all the events in Nick Spencer’s Captain America run and other events in the Marvel Universe.

Now that the goal of Hydra is finally hitting, we can start to see the Secret Empire in sight. From the ABC article we learn that Steve Rogers will be revealed as an Hydra Agent early in the event. Which is good as that at least will help the flow of the event better. From events in Civil War II and now heading up S.H.I.E.L.D., Steve Rogers has only been able to hide his plans and Hydra’s for so long. As Brevoort puts it in #0 it all starts with, “the worst day in the Marvel Universe.” and builds from there.

Secret Empire Interior Page Marvel

Brevoort continues to say, “Where not one, not two, but three separate events break out all at once. Cap, as head of S.H.I.E.L.D., is able to mobilize forces to all three of those situations. And those three situations represent Hydra’s first move. It comes off the blocks explosively right from the get-go,” he added. You can see why this would be, “the worst day in the Marvel Universe” fairly easily. Considering the build up for this series, this is going to have to hit the ground running in a big way. From what I can see, that seems to be the plan.

It is nice to see that Secret Empire is happening and is going to hit with a big splash.

Since May 2016, this event has been building up for what seems like forever. Take note of what Brevoort says about Secret Empire in this bit, “We are done with the covert portion, the buildup portion of the program, Secret Empire is the pyrotechnics, the big Michael Bay blockbuster, huge colossal struggles and battles across the Marvel Universe, with all of our key characters and players taking on a big role,” meaning we are done with the covert warfare and it is all in the light, thank goodness.

Now for you all in Monkeys Fighting Robots Universe, what do you think of Secret Empire? Are you excited for it or whatever other emotions you may have, let us know. The Secret Empire is here, now we shall see if it was worth the ride to get there.

Space Junk And The Ultimate Science Fiction Movie Mashup!

Monkeys Fighting Robots

On this day in history, back in 2009, two satellites in low-earth orbit smashed into each other. The impact wrecked both objects. The incident between Iridium 33 and Kosmos-2251 was a first, which is saying something considering there’s A LOT of junk floating around our beautiful blue planet. The idea of space junk brings me here, to you, fair reader. Because just like science often leads humans to create more junk, people also make movies about science that are absolute junk. However, there is hope. Even bad science fiction movies have some pretty clever parts. Maybe, just maybe, if those clever parts are smashed together with the clever parts of other bad films, it might make for a good movie. It might also make for a bad movie that’s fun to watch. Either way, win-win!

5. Hollow Man and Prometheus

Paul Verhoeven’s unfortunate update of The Invisible Man was pretty lackluster, but in Hollow Men, the Hollow Man exacts revenge on the awful characters in Prometheus. First, he kills the geologist who shows almost no interest in the rocks of an alien world. Next, he goes after the biologist who is scared of an alien corpse one scene then practically makes out with an alien tentacle-creature in another. In a twist, it turns out Hollow Man is the only human ever made a warrior by … The Predator!

’50 Shades Darker’ Review: An Average Experience That’s Hardly Worth Your Time

Monkeys Fighting Robots

In theaters now, ‘Fifty Shades Darker’ is ravaged by flaccid performances from both Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson on top of a narrative that is so incoherent that it will leave audiences unsatisfied.

Summary

When we last left our love birds, Anastasia (Dakota Johnson) broke up with Christian (Jamie Dornan) after an unpleasant experience in his sex dungeon. Apparently, it dawned on her at that moment that a man with any room he refers to as his “dungeon” has got some deep-seated anger issues. Ana now works at a publishing house as a personal assistant for Jack Hyde (Eric Johnson) who is doing a terrible job hiding his desire to sleep with her. However, this narrative is all about Christian begging his way back into Anastasia’s life. After years upon years of being with sexually submissive women, he’s finally found the one girl who he wants for the rest of his life. He even went as far as proclaiming to her that there would be no rules or nondisclosure agreements (this guy sounds like a winner). Of course, Anastasia agrees to get back together with him, but only if they take it slow (which I guess means have sex five minutes after you make that declaration). However, their happiness is short-lived as Christian has secrets, and those very secrets could doom the very thing he wants most of all.

Fifty Shades Darker

Performances

Casting Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson in Fifty Shades of Grey has to be one of the worst casting decisions that I’ve ever seen. The source material (and I use that term very loosely) requires that the two leads have some spark or chemistry on screen and none of that is evident in the film. These are supposed to be two people whose passion for one another is so profound that they can’t be denied the company of each other for a second. When Christian is groveling at Anastasia’s feet for her to take him back, it sounded rote and monotonous. Where was the emotion? Where was the passion? This is the love of your life! When Anastasia learns that Christian’s helicopter had crashed, all we got was crocodile tears. Where is the sorrow? Where is grief? The love of your life might have just died, and all we got was a few tears. There was a reason why fans weren’t happy with the casting choices, and it appears the fans were right.

Direction and Writing

James Foley was the right choice to direct the second installment in this franchise after the poor effort Sam Taylor-Johnson put forth in the first installment. Foley has a strong sense of where the focus should lie in a particular scene which didn’t seem to be the case with Johnson. Johnson utilized many wide shots to capture the brutality of the sexual acts Ana and Christian engaged in. In a short while, it became off-putting and detracted from the film. Foley placed the emphasis not on the acts as much as the emotion (or in this movie’s case lack there of) so the focus wasn’t so much on the act as much as the person. Where Foley missed the mark was how he edited the film. He shot both Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed at the same and included way too much of the wooing between Christian and Ana and could have easily cut a good twenty minutes from the film.

Niall Leonard attempted to right the wrongs of the first film but bit off a little more than he could handle. Leonard attempts to shift the focus of this franchise from the deviant sexual behavior taking place to more of a romantic story and included way too much of it in the second installment. Ana starts off wanting to take things nice and slow (which we all respect) and then what seemed to be a mere second later, she’s in bed with Christian (with no explanation as to why she did it). We kept getting shown again and again that these two are in love with another to the point where I wanted to say “Enough, we get it.” It got to be so much that at one point during the film, Christian’s helicopter crashes which starts off as this big deal but is resolved in less than three minutes. Then that scene which was mildly compelling transitions into another “I love you” moment between the couple. With all these moments of romance (plus random moments that come out of nowhere), the narrative never gets any momentum is quite incoherent.

Final Thoughts

It would be incredibly lazy of me just to say that Fifty Shades Darker was this abomination of a film. The truth is that Fifty Shades Darker is light years better than the original movie. However, that’s not to say this movie is anywhere close to a good one (quite the contrary). Lifeless performances and an incoherent narrative make this an experience that’s hardly worth paying for.

James Marsters Leads The Pride in Marvel’s Runaways Series

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The rule of thumb states all good heroes need a good villain. For the Runaways, the Marvel heroes need ten of them. To do that, you need damn good actors.

Like James Marsters- the guy who used to play Spike.

Deadline reports Marvel’s Runaways has found their Pride for the future Hulu series.

Marsters of Buffy fame will play Victor Stein, who is the father of Chase (“Talkback”) Stein. The group includes Ryan Sands, Kip Pardue, and Annie Wersching.

Executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are voicing their support of the cast.

“This cast is an abundance of riches. We are so excited to have assembled our PRIDE, though for the fate of humanity we should be very concerned,” they say in a statement.

Comic co-creator Brian K. Vaughn will serve as a consultant to the series. He says: “Marvel’s Runaways has enough great actors to support two shows, but I love that this project contains multiple generations of incredible talent all in one story.”

The Runaways has yet to film. No release date is set.

Here’s a list of who’s who in the cast:

1James Marsters as Victor Stein

2Ever Carradine as Janet Stein

3James Yaegashi as Robert Minoru

4Brittany Ishibashi as Tina Minoru

5Kevin Weisman as Dale Yorkes

6Brigid Brannagh as Stacey Yorkes

7Kip Pardue as Frank Dean

8Annie Wersching as Leslie Dean

9Ryan Sands as Geoffrey Wilder

10Angel Parker as Catherine Wilder

Top 10 LEGO Movies That Should Be Made Next

Monkeys Fighting Robots

2014’s smash-hit The Lego Movie is building up a universe of movies. First up, there’s The Lego Batman Movie out this weekend. WB has also released the trailer for 2017’s Ninjago, and announced a Lego Movie 2 the following year. But why stop there? With all of the potential franchises that could do with a LEGO reboot, here’s our list of the most desirable LEGO movies.

1LEGO Men In Black

Men In Black

Men in Black is another action-comedy that plays to the strengths of the LEGO universe. It’s a fun property, and making the characters into bricks wouldn’t take away from the things that make it fun. Additionally, The Lego Movie directors – Phil Lord and Chris Miller – had hoped to write a Men in Black tie-in with their reboot of 21 Jump Street. It seems like that dream may be dead, but that shouldn’t mean we lose a fun new entry into the Men in Black universe.

David Gordon Green And Danny McBride To Remake ‘Halloween’!

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The Halloween remake is finally happening from Bloomhouse. The news comes directly from both Bloomhouse’s own website, and original Halloween director and current remake producer John Carpenter’s Facebook page.

Although Green was previously attached to the Suspiria remake and McBride is one of the stars of the upcoming  Alien: Covenantthis will be the first horror project for the duo together behind the camera. The two have mostly collaborated on comedies like Eastbound and Down, and most recently, Vice-Principals.

Blumhouse founder/CEO Jason Blum, Halloween series producer Malek Akkad, Miramax and Trancas International Films will be producing the remake.

I don’t know about you, but this has just become a very interesting and anticipated movie for me. Horror remakes are becoming tiresome, but this creative team does throw a wrench into that system. We will continue to report as more news on this project develops.

Who Will Randy Orton Face At WrestleMania 33?

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Randy Orton is headlining WrestleMania 33 after winning the 2017 Royal Rumble.

Will his opponent be newly-crowned WWE Champion John Cena?

Or will a new champion emerge at WWE Elimination Chamber?

Unlike previous years, the pay-per-view before Mania will not be a throw-away event.

And after two post-Rumble episode of Smackdown Live, the road to WrestleMania is shaping up to be a memorable one.

The “Main” Event At WrestleMania?

I’m not entirely convinced Randy Orton’s match will close down WrestleMania 33.

In fact, I’d be willing to bet Brock Lesnar vs Goldberg is the real “main event”.

If Goldberg is WWE Universal Champion (likely) come Mania, I have no doubt that’ll be the last match of the night.

Be that as it may, Randy Orton is the only person to this point that is guaranteed of a main event slot.

Who will be Randy Orton’s Opponent?

WWE Champion John Cena has a daunting road ahead of him before he gets to WrestleMania.

Randy Orton Opponent

At WWE Elimination Chamber, Cena will defend his title in the chamber against AJ Styles, Bray Wyatt, The Miz, Baron Corbin, and Intercontinental Champion Dean Ambrose.

Realistically, I only see three ways WWE can go in this match.

John Cena will either retain or drop the title to AJ Styles or Bray Wyatt.

It seems so sudden to have Cena drop the title just weeks after winning it but with how little they celebrated his record-tying 16th championship, Elimination Chamber could be the end of his 16th title reign.

Whenever Cena does drop it, there’s no question his quest for a 17th (and record-breaking) championship will be fully embraced and celebrated.

Wyatt Family Destiny

Is Bray Wyatt destined to capture his first singles title in WWE?

If he does, what better way to culminate The Wyatt Family storyline than with a championship match at the “Showcase of the Immortals.”

When Randy originally joined The Wyatt’s he said “If you can’t beat them, join them.”

Well, with a Bray Wyatt championship run possibly on the horizon, Orton might not have a choice but to beat them.

We’ve seen the dissension in The Wyatt Family tear Luke Harper away from them.

So much so that Harper and Orton will battle at Elimination Chamber.

A feud between Bray and Randy could further destroy The Wyatt Family.

Or it could reunite them by having Bray ditch Randy to add Luke Harper back.

Harper’s issues with Randy Orton probably aren’t resolved at The Chamber.

Harper won’t rest until Orton is out of The Wyatt Family.

Maybe Erick Rowan is healthy enough to return and suddenly, The Wyatt’s are as powerful as ever.

And maybe Randy Orton vs Bray Wyatt is good enough to close out WrestleMania 33.
