Episode 112: ‘Get Out,’ Tony Cox Talks Star Wars, Brett Kelly Loves Octavia Spencer

Monkeys Fighting Robots

‘Get Out’ from the mind of Jordan Peele is in theaters right now. The film also has an insane 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. EJ believe ‘Get Out’ will change the horror genre like Wes Craven did with ‘Scream’ back in 1996.

On the second half of the show, Matt has a very interesting conversation with Tony Cox and Brett Kelly of the ‘Bad Santa’ franchise. Cox explains how cool and difficult it was to film ‘Return of the Jedi’ as an Ewok.

A Gen Xer and a Millennial debate the latest topics in pop culture. One guy is a filmmaker and the other is a journalist, but both are nerds. We make your slowest days at work better. Hosts, Matthew Sardo and EJ Moreno.

Never heard of Matt Sardo?

For starters, he made the Kessel Run in less than 11 parsecs. Prior to that, he gave Doc Brown the idea for the flux capacitor and led the Resistance to victory over SkyNet – all while sipping a finely crafted IPA. As a radio host, he’s interviewed celebrities, athletes and everyone in between. He’s covered everything from the Super Bowl to Comic-Con.

Who is EJ Moreno?

Is he a trained physician? No. Is he a former Miss Universe contestant? Possibly. But what we know for sure is he’s a writer, filmmaker, and pop culture enthusiast. Since film school, EJ has written & directed several short films. He’s used his passion for filmmaking to become a movie critic for MonkeysFightingRobots.com.

5 Categories Worthy of Academy Award Consideration

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The 89th Academy Awards is this Sunday. Once again, Hollywood will celebrate some of the best achievements in film across 24 distinct categories. While those categories cover a wide range of topics, from best acting to best sound design, there are several aspects of film making deserving of attention that sadly fall outside of the existing genres.

The Academy Awards has not always consisted of 24 categories. The first broadcast in 1928 only had seven categories, and has expanded its range over the years. In 2001, they finally added a category for best animated feature. With well over 15 years having passed since the last addition, they’re well overdue another shake-up. Below, I have highlighted 5 categories I consider worthy of consideration by the 90th Academy Awards.

5. Best Stunt

Best Stunt

For years, films have designed spectacular stunts that seems impossible to carry out in real life. When you learn that someone figured out a way to do it with limited visual effects (or none at all), the achievement becomes even greater. This award would finally give these amazing stunts their warranted recognition. It would be a shared award between the stunt coordinator on a film, and the people carrying out the stunt.

4. Best Voice-Over Performance

Following the release of Her, a discussion surrounding Scarlett Johansson’s eligibility for best supporting actress emerged. It was decided by the Golden Globes that Johansson was not eligble for consideration.  Rather than Johansson, and other amazing voice-over talent, needing to fight for a share of the established acting categories, it would make a lot more sense for the Academy to establish a separate category for voice-over performances. Johansson might’ve been the first time people really considered voice-over work an Oscar worthy effort. However, for years voice actors have shown an amazing skill across a wide spectrum of roles. So a category celebrating their achievements is well overdue.

3. Best Motion-Capture Performance

Andy Serkis is probably the most prominent performer within motion-capture. Known from films like The Lords of the Rings, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and more, Serkis has raised a discussion about where visual effects end, and an individual human performance begins. This question could be answered with a category celebrating the best motion-capture performances within a year. Combined with the already existing best visual effects category, this would enable both aspects of a motion-capture performance getting its share of the glory.

2. Best Debut

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), the British equivalent of the Academy Awards, has long had a category celebrating the best debuts of British directors, writers and producers in a given year. A similar award, either celebrating American talent specifically, or worldwide debuts, is a terrific addition to the roster. It would give the Oscars a chance to highlight films that may have gone under the radar of the major categories, but made enough waves to warrant some award accolades.

  1. Best Casting

This is the category that’ll most likely come into fruition at some stage. In 2013, Woody Allen went to bat for casting directors world over, saying they deserved their own category at the Oscars. While the Academy didn’t act back then, it is likely you’ll see an award for best casting at the some stage. Casting directors are a crucial part of any film production, and they’re long overdue their own category.

Big Finish Releases John Hurt’s Final Appearance as the War Doctor

Monkeys Fighting Robots

John Hurt’s recent passing was a blow to all those that loved his work. He appeared in many productions across the years. In Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor, he played the War Doctor. The War Doctor is a unique regeneration, created to face the Time War. The character himself doesn’t even consider himself The Doctor.

And yet it’s the War Doctor that’s willing to make the hard choice that will end the war. There is still some controversy over the episode. But John Hurt, as always, embodies the character perfectly.

So perhaps it isn’t surprising that when Big Finish gained the rights to tell more stories about the mysterious War Doctor, they happily got to work. John Hurt himself reprises his role in these stories about the Time War. And now Big Finish has released the fourth and final audiobook in the War Doctor series:

The War Doctor and Cardinal Ollistra are stranded far from their Time Lord forces, with Daleks closing in, destroying all that stands between them. They must call on the help of new friends and old to fight their way back to the front lines. From the outer reaches of the galaxy, to the heart of Gallifrey itself, the Doctor finds casualties in every place the Time War has touched. Among them, a fighter, a travelling companion of the distant past, who remembers him quite differently. A warrior woman named Leela…

The War Doctor: Casualties of War is available now on the Big Finish website. In addition, The Time War Saga, which includes all of the War Doctor adventures, as well an Eighth Doctor prequel, is also available.

What did you think of John Hurt in The Day of the Doctor?

Review: ‘The Old Guard’ #1: The Ageless Battle In Dark Days

Monkeys Fighting Robots

One thing about The Old Guard #1, it’s Greg Rucka writing a comic and for many people that’s all they need. I’m reading this book as someone who tore through two giant volumes of Lazarus. I really liked Lazarus, a lot. Yet despite that, not every project a creator works on is my cup of tea, same with anyone else. That’s why looking over The Old Guard will be a fun challenge in itself. Will I like it? Will I hate it? That’s the fun part of this one, which makes it exciting as in all honestly, I really didn’t know much about this going in. Sit back and relax as I begin my review of The Old Guard #1. Will this be another successful Greg Rucka creator owned adventure? Let’s find out as the reviewing adventure begins.

On with the show! The Old Guard #1 has already a pedigree from the author alone, yet pedigree can only take you so far.

The Old Guard #1 Cover Image Comics

Before we start, yes this lives up to the strong pedigree of Greg Rucka in so many ways. Put it this way, it’s immortals with a Queen and Country kind of vibe. The Old Guard revolves around a team of immortals who do special missions all over the world. Yet at one one member of the team Andy, is getting tired and bored of it all. She’s a narrator for part of the book and you see a lot of events through her point of view and it works. The whole issue revolves around a mission that they normally don’t do, but they are compelled to. Then as the story goes on there’s a new twist in the tale that leads to exciting developments in the issues to come. The general idea of this book and how this is going to go, I’m game for.

Rucka gives you time to spent with each member of the team through Andy’s narration and into the mission. You get a loose feel for how each member of the team operates and their personality. Even with the new twist, you get a good idea as to what the new twist is about. There’s a lot of strong characterization happening here and I like that. As the last part of the issue is one massive action scene, you need to care about these characters and Rucka succeeds at that. Rucka gets characters first and foremost and I’ve always appreciated that about his work.

In talking about the action in this issue, you have to give it up for the art team, the entire art team from top to bottom. They make The Old Guard sing.

The Old Guard #1 Street Scene

One thing I notice about this book is the art reflects the tone of the series beautifully. Leandro Fernandez has a style that as you read on you realize it is perfect for this story. The way Fernandez draws The Old Guard gives the world a lived in feel. It’s not bright and it’s not colorful; it’s a weary world for these immortals. The art comes to life in a ballet of death and destruction as we see them in battle. Fluid action mixed in with bullets and blades flying everywhere, it’s cool and a lot of fun to see. It’s also in those quiet moments before the battles where you see the weariness of these characters and that’s what makes the action that much brighter.

Even better is the coloring of this book, Daniela Miwa is setting a brilliant atmosphere. Take special note of how the sun splashes on the faces of the characters, giving their weary faces that much more detail. The usage of light in this story is incredible. Lots of dark shades of purple with the street lights against the deep purple, it makes for a cool effect, and that’s just one example of the use of light here. Take note of the lettering too, Jodi Lynne does amazing effects showing the usage of bullets in battle. The background lettering behind the intense action added such a cool element to an already great scene. I loved it.

The Old Guard is without a doubt not just a well written book, but a beautifully illustrated one too.

If you’re somehow sleeping on The Old Guard, you need to have it in your life. It’s worth your time. Once you read it you will be just as excited as I am right now. It’s a brilliant new series and I cannot wait to see what happens next.

Breaking: Nightwing Is Finally Coming To DC Extended Universe!

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Today has been a big day for news regarding the DCEU. After Matt Reeves confirming that he is indeed directing The Batman, news of Dick Grayson/Nightwing joining the ever growing franchise has come from The Hollywood Reporter. In an exclusive, THR is reporting that Lego Batman director Chris McKay (also known for Robot Chicken) has been tapped to direct. Bill Dubuque (The Accountant) is writing the script.

Nightwing was rumored for the DCEU before, with fans even speculating he was maybe going to appear in Suicide Squad (of course, we now know he didn’t).

This is some positive news for the DCEU, as not only is Chris McKay a great choice, but Nightwing is a fan-favorite character who has had a serious demand to appear in live-action for years now.

Comic fans know Nightwing as the alter ego of Dick Grayson, the first and original  Batman sidekick Robin, who carved out a great superhero career of his own through the DC Comics universe and was the star of several of his own critically acclaimed comic book series.

So what do you guys think? Will a Nightwing solo movie work? Is Warner Bros. going in the right direction? Comment and discuss below!

The next DCEU films to hit theaters are Wonder Woman starring (June 2), the  Justice League (Nov. 17) and Aquaman  (Oct. 5, 2018).

Alien: Covenant

About the upcoming film, star Michael Fassbender had this to say:

What’s great about this story is the characters are so different. They’re not just filling out a spaceship, their characters have been thought about. It harks back to those really cool characters in the original Alien, where there are great relationships going on outside of the [alien].

Pretty cool! Let us know what you guys think in the comments below.

Aside from Fassbender, Alien: Covenant stars: Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Demián Bichir, Carmen Ejogo, Amy Seimetz, Jussie Smollett, Callie Hernandez, Nathaniel Dean, Alexander England, Benjamin Rigby, and James Franco. It is directed by Ridley Scott.  The film opens in cinemas May 19th, 2017.

Is Simon Kinberg Aiming To Direct The Next X-Men Movie?

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Simon Kinberg could be making a big leap in Hollywood.

The producer is in the running to direct the next X-Men movie, according to Collider.

Reports indicate Kinberg is looking to make his directorial debut on X-Men: Supernova. He’s also writing the film’s screenplay. Bryan Singer is taking a break from the franchise.

X-Men Phoenix

Now, I’m of two minds about this idea. First, the thought of a neophyte director is troubling, because this is a film franchise. Josh Trank had a sleeper hit with Chronicle, but we know how Fantastic Four turned out. Keep in mind, though, Tim Miller had a great first movie with Deadpool, and it became a huge hit.

Let’s not forget Tim Miller had a hit with his first movie

On the plus side, Kinberg is a solid producer, and he has an eye for story. He’s been in Hollywood for over ten years. Aside from X-Men, Kinberg has done producing for Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Sherlock Holmes, and Star Wars: Rebels. He also has a Best Picture nomination for his work on The Martian.

Remember, Kinberg did help make X-Men: Days Of Future Past become a hit. He’s also looking to correct mistakes of the past like X-Men: The Last Stand, which he cowrote. This includes wanting to re-do the Dark Phoenix for the big screen.

What are your thoughts on Kinberg directing the next X-Men film? Share your thoughts!

Monkeys Fighting Robots

After weeks of rumors and speculation, Warner Bros. has officially announced that Dawn of the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves will helm The Batman. The director is also known for Cloverfield and Let Me In.

This will be the first Batman movie to take place in the DC Extended Universe. Ben Affleck was originally set to direct the project but backed out. This Is What Could Have Made Hugh Jackman Continue As Wolverine

Monkeys Fighting Robots

After seventeen years, Hugh Jackman is saying goodbye to the Wolverine. Logan is set to be the actors final time playing the character and although Jackman has turned down cameo roles in Deadpool 2, he just revealed what could have made him stay on as our favorite mutant.

Thanks to Screen Rant, a Wolverine super-fan was given the opportunity to watch Logan and interview Jackman. In the interview, the fan asked Jackman if he would play Wolverine if the character joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe and his answer was enough to make us wish a deal could be struck.

“If that was on the table when I made my decision, it certainly would have made me pause. That’s for sure. Because I always love the idea of him within that dynamic, with the Hulk obviously, with Iron Man but there’s a lot of smarter people with MBAs who can’t figure that out [laughter]. You never know.”

Jackman then went on to confirm that if The Avengers was an option, he wouldn’t have said this was his last time as the character.

“At the moment, honestly, if I really did have them there, I probably wouldn’t have said this is the last. It just feels like this is the right time [to leave the character].”

Hugh Jackman has voiced his hope for a crossover multiple times over the years. It certainly doesn’t seem like this is a real possibility. The X-Men franchise has never been better, meaning Fox is making to much money for any executive to happily share with Marvel Studios. But hey, we can dream.
