Awards season is about to start its big push. We still have Steven Spielberg’s historical drama, The Post, and Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread – which just so happens to be Daniel Day-Lewis’s last movie as well – on the horizon. But there’s been plenty to enjoy so far in 2017, a year of big movies and small movies and some tremendous movie moments in both. You may have forgotten about some of these – stuff moves pretty fast these days – so this Turkey Day, here’s 12 movie moments to be thankful for in 2017…

10The New Vince Vaughn

Vince Vaughn’s renaissance has been less visible, more low-key than Matthew McConaughey’s McConaissance a few years ago. Vaughn won’t win any awards for Brawl in Cell Block 99. That doesn’t matter, because that’s not what this new version of Vince Vaughn wants to do.

Vaughn is a mountain of aggression and violence in Cell Block 99, S. Craig Zahler’s visceral, cartoonishly hyper-violent genre throwback. It is the signal of a sea change in Vaughn’s career. He may go back to stinky comedies at some point down the line, but his follow up to Cell Block 99 is Zahler’s next one, Dragged Across Concrete, which sounds like an absolute doozy. My theory is, Vince Vaughn is a little older, a little wiser, and maybe a little more angry than he was in his youth. He’s ready to use celluloid as his method for catharsis, and I am here for that.
