Invasion of The Body Snatchers has seen its fair share of remakes over the years. That’s because the sci-fi story can be retrofitted to comment on any sociopolitical landscape, regardless of the era. So, it’s no surprise that the classic story is being remade again.
According to the report at Deadline, long time producer John Davis is producing this new Invasion of The Body Snatchers with Conjuring 2 screenwriter David Leslie Johnson writing the screenplay. There is no director attached yet.
Body Snatchers has been in the zeitgeist since the Jack Linney novel hit shelves in 1954. There was the original 1956 version, the 1978 classic starring Donald Sutherland, and Abel Ferara’s criminally underseen 1993 version, Body Snatchers. Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig starred in a 2007 version, simply called The Invasion to try and throw us off the scent, but it was a disastrous remake.
Invasion of The Body Snatchers is a film that should be remade every few decades. As the times and society shifts and evolves, new threats emerge. The Cold War, religious fundamentalism, and military influence have all been themes in the previous versions, what could this new one focus on? There are a number of possibilities, all of which are ominous in their own right.
