This year’s Sundance Film Festival was a more low-key affair comparatively speaking. There was no sensation of the festival, not record-breaking deals. But there were still plenty of great films by all accounts, one of those being Hereditary. And if this trailer is any indication, this looks like a terrifying new horror.
The great Toni Collette headlines what looks to be an incredibly unnerving story about the evils we inherit from our parents? Sounds wild… check this out:
When Ellen, the matriarch of the Graham family, passes away, her daughter’s family begins to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry. The more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited. Making his feature debut, writer-director Ari Aster unleashes a nightmare vision of a domestic breakdown that exhibits the craft and precision of a nascent auteur, transforming a familial tragedy into something ominous and deeply disquieting, and pushing the horror movie into chilling new terrain with its shattering portrait of heritage gone to hell.
If the movie is half as unsettling as the trailer, this is going to be a harrowing watch.
Along with Collette, Hereditary also stars Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro, Ann Dowd, and long lost great Gabriel Byrne. It opens June 8.
