The Fictional Holiday Of Galentine’s Is Becoming Oh So Real!
Thanks to Amy Poehler’s Leslie Knope from ‘Parks and Recreation‘ for giving us this great holiday. Since the “Galentine’s Day” episode aired in 2010, a new tradition has been born!
February 13th is now officially known as “Galentine’s Day”. It’s the day when all of your female friends get together and celebrate loving each other. Basically, this is Valentine’s Day but way more fun! It’s the perfect way to celebrate it with your single friends as well.
For better clarification, let me have Leslie Knope break it down:
“Oh, it’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas.”
So below you will find a list with some of best movies to watch this Galentine’s Day.
Let me know in the comments below what your favorite movie to watch on this day is!
Honorable Mentions:
‘Contact‘ (1997), ‘50 Shades of Grey‘ (2005), ‘The Princess Bride‘ (1987)
Magic Mike
Does this entry need much explanation? This Steven Soderbergh film about male strippers is the perfect mix of dramatic story and shirtless men to have all the ladies enthralled. If you want more ‘Magic Mike‘, throw in the equally as sexy sequel as well!
Blue is the Warmest Color
If hunky dudes isn’t your style, then you can spend Galentine’s Day with this romantic French love story about two women. ‘Blue is the Warmest Color‘ has to be one of the most powerful pieces of cinema and such a great story of two strong females.
Beaches
‘Beaches‘ has to be the ultimate “chick flick”. You pop this movie in and just let the tears start falling. I don’t know why this movie has such a strong hold on emotions but you better hope one of your gal’s brings over a box of tissues.
Mean Girls/Heathers
These two are interchangeable depending on the decade you grew up in. ‘Heathers‘ is the perfect example of female cliques in the 80’s, while ‘Mean Girls‘ nailed girls in the early 00’s. Both of these films are guaranteed for a night of laughter!
Frozen
Disney proved with ‘Frozen‘ that sisterly love is stronger than anything a man can bring. Anna and Elsa have inspired an entire generation of female bonding. I think that’s what makes this movie perfect for Galentine’s Day!
“Galentine’s Day” (Parks and Recreation)
While this may not be a movie, watching this episode of ‘Parks and Recreation‘ seems like a must. What better way to celebrate Galentine’s Day with your girl friends than with Leslie Knope being the most amazing woman ever!
