The Star Trek franchise continues to trailblaze against all stereotypes.
Helmsman of the USS Enterprise, Hikaru Sulu, played by John Cho, is shown in ‘Star Trek Beyond’ as the loving father of a daughter with a same-sex partner.
“I liked the approach, which was not to make a big thing out it, which is where I hope we are going as a species, to not politicise one’s personal orientations,” said Cho in an interview with the Herald Sun.
Cho add the decision by writer Simon Pegg and Lin to make Sulu gay was a nod to George Takei, who played the character in the original 1960s series, and was a sign of what he hoped were changing times.

‘Star Trek Beyond,’ the next instalment in Star Trek franchise, created by Gene Roddenberry, returns with director Justin Lin at the helm of this epic voyage of the U.S.S. Enterprise and her intrepid crew. In ‘Beyond,’ the Enterprise crew explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a mysterious new enemy who puts them and everything the Federation stands for to the test.
The film stars Idris Elba, Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, John Cho and Anton Yelchin.
‘Star Trek Beyond’ hits theaters on July 22.
