‘Dear White People, You Can Laugh At The Black Jokes’ – Logan Browning

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Netflix released a featurette Welcome to Dear White People: 101 where the cast and crew of ‘Dear White People’ explain the new series based on Justin Simien’s film about the lives of four black students at an Ivy League college. The series drops this Friday (April 28).

The featurette is quite funny and entertaining, watch below.

When the first trailer dropped back February, Tim Treadstone who is famous for being an ass-hat started the reverse racism outrage on Twitter and people were canceling their Netflix accounts and posting the photos on Twitter.

Immediately after the Twitter rage started, Simien posted a note on Facebook.

“When the first trailer for the film dropped, I’ll admit the deluge of claims that I was a reverse racist and a ‘piece of shit monkey that should shut up and go back to Africa’ really hurt. But now, I feel strangely encouraged. To see the sheer threat that people feel over a date announcement video featuring a woman of color (politely) asking not to be mocked makes it so clear why I made this show,” Simien wrote.

Three months later ‘Dear White People’ hits Netflix on April 28, you should watch it, and support creators asking thought provoking questions.

About ‘Dear White People’
Set against the backdrop of a predominantly white Ivy League university where racial tensions bubble just below the surface, Dear White People is a send-up of the now post “post-racial” America that weaves together a universal story of finding one’s own identity and forging a wholly unique path. The satirical series — which picks up where the acclaimed 2014 film by the same name left off – follows a group of Winchester University’s students of color as they navigate a diverse landscape of social injustice, cultural bias, political correctness (or lack thereof) and activism in the millennial age. Through an absurdist lens, Dear White People utilizes biting irony, self-deprecation and sometimes brutal honesty to hold up a mirror to the issues plaguing society today, all the while leading with laughter.

‘Dear White People’ stars Logan Browning, Brandon P. Bell, Antoinette Robertson, DeRon Horton, John Patrick Amedori, Ashley Blaine Featherson and Marque Richardson.

Fate Of The World Rests With Four Losers In Silly Sci-Fi Comedy Lazer Team On YouTube Red

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Lazer Team on YouTube Red is a science-fiction-comedy with a rollercoaster ride of quality. Back in the 1980s, there was a show called Nightflight which eventually evolved into USA Up All Night. Long story short, Nightlfight was a collection of weird videos, experimental short films, and animations. It was YouTube before there was such a thing as the Interwebs. What sort of weird experimental film is Lazer Team from Red vs. Blue creators Rooster Teeth? Wow. It’s one strange mix for the senses.

Lazer Team begins with an exposition bomb that instantly takes out the brain. After text explains how SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) discovered an alien signal, we learn that the aliens who broadcast the message are sending a suit of power to help Earth defend itself from a coming threat. A “champion” is born and raised to wear the suit, but when the outfit comes, the pieces are worn by four average Joes. With the pieces locked to them, the four losers must train with the would-be champion to save the world.

The closest comparison to Lazer Team is Galaxy Quest.

Star and writer Burnie Burns plays Anthony Hagan, a father, and a cop who inherits the left arm of the power suit which can generate a shield. His daughter’s boyfriend and football star, Zach Spencer (Michael Jones), gets the left arm which is a Mega Man style cannon. Colton Dunn (Superstore) is Herman Mendoza, a former football star with a bum leg who gets the boots granting him super speed. Gavin Free plays Woody Johnson, a dimwit who wears the helmet and gains super-intelligence, telepathy, and more.

Conceptually, the idea of a benevolent alien species sending an Iron Man suit to earth to help fight a great evil is fantastic. It’s a solid foundation for any sci-fi story to build upon to create a wide variety of entertaining tales. In Lazer Team, they shoot for unabashed silly action-comedy.

At times the comedy in Lazer Team is brilliant, particularly because of the performances of the four leads. Colton Dunn, Burnie Burns, Gavin Free, and Michael Jones all play off of each other well and inhabit their somewhat simple characters with gusto, often elevating the writing. More often the jokes receive a lip-press, shrug, and nod. The jokes aren’t bad; they just don’t land as intended.

The special effects are quaint, reminiscent of an 80s style with just simple touches of CG and some camera tricks. If effects are important to you, then Lazer Team is laughable. If not, then it’s fun and not a major distraction.

“My calculations show that, scientifically, we’re screwed.”
– Neil DeGrasse Tyson in Lazer Team

Lazer Team is by no means a great film. The humor and tone of the flick are a bit uneven. While most of the movie doesn’t take itself seriously, there are moments when it does, particularly towards the end. In these moments, the quality takes a severe dip. However, those moments, as groan-inducing as they are, are fairly few and far between.

The closest comparison to Lazer Team is Galaxy Quest. Both movies possess a joyful silliness and a group of barely friends who come together at the end. By every possible measure, Galaxy Quest is a superior movie, but Lazer Team carries that spirit. Lazer Team also has the same culty feel. One thing is for sure, Lazer Team is the perfect silly science fiction comedy for a lazy Sunday watch.

R.I.P. Jonathan Demme, A Great Director Without Borders

Monkeys Fighting Robots

This morning we learned that Jonathan Demme, Oscar winning director behind Silence of The Lambs, has passed away at the age of 73.

The report in IndieWire, via a family source, claims esophageal cancer and complications from heart disease were what ultimately took Demme’s life. Here was one of the greatest directors of the modern era, but you probably wouldn’t realize it because Jonathan Demme was never trapped in any genre or consistent “auteur” themes with which he felt obligated to use. He simply made great movies, no matter the genre.

After getting his start in the 70s exploitation shlock classics like Caged Heat, Demme found success with the incredible 1984 David Byrne/Talking Heads documentary Stop Making Sense. He turned this success into a steady and eclectic directing career, helming offbeat comedy/dramas like Something Wild – one of the more underrated movies of the 80s – and Married to The Mob. So his attachment to the upcoming Silence of The Lambs adaptation was somewhat of a surprise.

Lambs is considered, at least to me, to be the Psycho of the 90s, a harrowing psychological thriller with incredible performances and an almost perfect sense of space, pacing, and build up. The movie’s black heart sings, and was rewarded as such at the Academy Awards, becoming only the third film in history to win the Big Five: Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Screenplay.

And then, Demme took a left turn into the world of socially-conscious melodrama with Philadelphia. The shift in tone between these two films was typical of Jonathan Demme’s career, and Philadelphia would be Tom Hanks’ first of back-to-back Best Actor wins.

Beyond Philadelphia, Demme bounced from remakes to original films and back again never quite capturing the magic of his late 80s and early 90s work. He had a brief resurgence with yet another underrated indie drama, Rachel Getting Married, which is at least partly responsible for legitimizing Anne Hathaway.

Jonathan Demme was never going to direct the same movie twice, even though he flirted with the notion from time to time. He switched styles, he changed genres, and he put the focus on story over flair. Which is why he was rarely mentioned in the same breath as his more showy contemporaries. Perhaps now, in death, he will get the recognition he deserved all along.

Thawne was able to beat Batman almost to death but was stopped when his speed force powers reacted strangely to the mysterious smiley face button first found in the Batcave almost one year ago. And wherever it sent him, and whatever he saw, it was an encounter terrifying and powerful enough to end the evil speedster’s life. So now Batman and Flash must combine their deductive abilities to finally shed a light on what has been plaguing their world.

Celebration 2017 to Honor Prince Could Be Just the Beginning

Monkeys Fighting Robots

This past weekend Paisley Park in Chanhassen Minnesota welcomed Prince fans from all over the world to Celebration 2017.  This event is notably named for celebrating the music legend in a series of events featuring guest artists. Celebration 2017 was planned for the one year anniversary of the sudden death of the musical icon known as Prince. Prince Rogers Nelson’s Chanhassen residence, known as Paisley Park, was turned into a museum.  Paisley Park the museum opened on October 28th, months after the artist’s untimely passing last year on April 21st. Heralding the date, the epicenter of his Purple Majesty hosted a 4 day event. This event was designed to focus on doing what members of his band The Revolution said he would prefer. A celebration of his life, his work and his legacy.

Celebration 2017 for Prince

The price tag for attending the events at Paisley Park were steep. General admission was $549.00, while the VIP treatment ran for a smooth $999.00.  For those who could not afford the lofty price tag for park admission, there more financially fiscal events to help celebrate. One of those events was Dance on Til Dawn, hosted by PRNFamily®. It was held at the Metropolitan Ballroom and Clubroom in Golden Valley, Minnesota. This after party started at 10:30 PM and raged till 4 AM. This event featured people like André Cymone, Apollonia Kotero, and Jellybean Johnson.

First Avenue

With that in mind, it was no surprise when tickets for a Prince tribute concert held in front of the legendary First Avenue venue also sold out.  The venue, First Avenue, is often pointed out as being seen in the movie Purple Rain. The black building’s most telling feature is the stars of the various artists that have performed there over the years. The concert tribute held during Celebration 2017 in front of First Avenue featured artists such as Ricky Kinchen and Homer O’Dell of Mint Condition, and Soul Asylum‘s Dave Pirner performing covers of Prince hits.

In Minneapolis

Interestingly the best part about being in Minneapolis during Celebration 2017 was the stories people told. Many of the locals present at various events had interacted with Prince. Others recalled where they were when the city learned of the passing of their personal music god. Daniel, a manager of a downtown Minneapolis restaurant called City Works about a block away from First Avenue, was one of them. He fondly recalled the memorial that spontaneously sprung up last year in front of First Avenue. He recalled how he and staff found themselves inundated with a mourning population. Unexpectedly this put the restaurant in the weeds. Consequently, this outcome caused him to expect much of the same the night of the street concert.

Prince

While traveling through Minneapolis, service industry workers told stories about how the Purple One was able to be normal in his hometown.  Usually the stories were told in the same fashion. Even though he was a world famous musical genius, everyone treated him as if he was just another common resident. They say, as many stories from friends confirm, he moved through his city freely. He shopped at local businesses a few miles from his home like an ordinary man. This atmosphere creates a great sense of grounding for any super fan. The people speaking of him make a near mythical being seem very real.

At Paisley Park

Paisley Park

Over at Paisley Park fans slowed their cars and took pictures of the fresh monuments and tributes being placed on the fence surrounding the complex. Lovers of his music loitered outside of Paisley Park telling stories of their first Prince concerts. Locals shared stories of how the man lived among them marveling at the places people came from to honor him. The sidewalk in front of the fence was cluttered with chalked messages of love and remembrance. Languages from around the world could be heard spoken in passing. Candles were being burned in the nearby Riley Creek tunnel as the sun set.

The Current

Local radio station The Current, which helped sponsor the tribute concert at First Avenue, dedicated the weekend to playing deep cuts of the artist’s music. They only interrupted the hits for candid interviews with members of The Revolution and 3rd Eye Girl. Guitarist Wendy Melvoin joined with bassist “Brownmark” Mark Brown, drummer Bobby Z and keyboardists Lisa Coleman and Doctor Fink to tell of their favorite songs and why they loved them.  While 3rd Eye Girl guitarist Donna Grantis spoke of what it was like to be mentored by Prince.  The Current wrapped up their tribute with a top 89 list of Prince hits. Their website is currently hosting some of the most up-to-date information on the high points of the recent events. Many participants hoped that this would be the beginning of an annual trend to celebrate the man that could paint the world purple.

For those interested The Revolution will be touring the United States to continue honoring their beloved friend, Prince. Their way of bringing the ‘celebration’ to a city near you. Show dates, cities and times can be found with most music ticket sellers.

Have any thoughts about Prince and possibly continuing this yearly celebration please comment below.

Are The New Avengers Coming to the Big Screen Post-‘Avengers 4’?

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Marvel’s studio President Kevin Feige is teasing a total shift in the MCU after Avengers 4, according to Hollywood Reporter.

All-New Marvel, All New Avengers?

Infinity Wars, the last movie in Phase 3, doesn’t hit theatres until 2018. That’s a whole decade, and 22 movies, after Iron Man kicked off Marvel’s unprecedented cinematic universe. At that point, Feige suggests, it will be time for a shake-up. “We have an idea [of what the MCU looks like post-Infinity War], and it’s gonna be very, very different.”

On the page and small screen, Marvel is raising eyebrows with a weird dedication to HYDRA. The “Secret Empire” storyline ruffles feathers all over the place. Readers are upset with Hydra-Cap, and retailers refuse to follow Marvel’s HYDRA-themed dress code. There is even talk of a Secret Empire boycott.

But there isn’t enough evidence one way or the other to suggest that HYDRA will take over the MCU, as well. In fact, considering the plot of Winter Soldier is pretty much the opposite of all things HYDRA, there’s a decent chunk of evidence that no one’s going to be hailing anything on the big screen anytime soon.

new avengers NOT HYDRA
lol bye

Instead, a popular theory for “not-phase-4” is a New start for the Avengers. This idea seems far more likely, as Feige claims even the title for Avengers 4 is a spoiler. It’s entirely possible for New Avengers, Phase 1; especially since the studio has confirmed Spider-Man’s sequel. If the “new direction” is one where the movies and shows actually interact with one another, then we may even see the Defenders on the Avengers team. The “New Avengers” would allow for new MCU characters, as well. Toss in some contract knowledge (namely the fact that Chris Evans isn’t long for the MCU, but Sebastian Stan will probably die there), and you’ve got a decent theory for Avengers 4,5, and 6.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is based on characters from Marvel comics. Avengers 3: Infinity War is currently expected to release  on May 4th, 2018. Avengers 4 does not currently have a release date.
